ACC Basketball in 2012-2013: NC State and Maryland Might Be the Teams to Beat … Unless UNC Gets Alex Oriakhi
With three underclassmen leaving UNC early – Marshall, Barnes and Henson, none of whom reached a Final 4 in their career – on the heels of Duke losing two starters to the NBA, it’s becoming clear next year might be the first one in awhile Duke or North Carolina doesn’t at least share the ACC title. Maryland and Duke shared the regular season crown in 2010; UNC and Virginia did in 2007. You have to go all the way back to 2003 to find the last time someone else won it outright (Wake Forest, led by Josh Howard and Eric Williams).
Here’s a very early look at what the 2012-2013 ACC might look like:
Maryland (17-15, 6-10)
* lost 2nd leading scorer, but 4 starters back
* Two Top 75 recruits in post players Shaquille Cleare and Charles Mitchell
* Got three likely NBA players in 7-footer Alex Len, guard Terrell Stoglin and wing Nick Faust
Ceiling: Len blows up to 20-10, Leslie leaves NCSU, McAdoo leaves UNC and Heels don’t get AO – 23 wins, get top 3 seed in March.
NC State (24-13, 9-7, Sweet 16)
* As of now, 4 starters return (happen to be their 4 leading scorers)
* Arguably the best recruiting class in the nation (3 McDonald’s All-Americans)
* If CJ Leslie returns and UNC doesn’t get Oriakhi, the Wolfpack should go in as the favorites
Ceiling: Leslie stays, Gottfried massage egos and manages minutes, Wolfpack win 25 games and ACC crown, Top 2 seed in March.
Duke (27-7, 13-3, 1st round)
* Lose three of their top six players (Rivers, Plumlees)
* Recruiting class, so far, is very thin
* They do have three redshirt players jumping into the mix – Alex Murphy, Michael Gbinije and Marshall Plumlee, all Top 80 recruits in 2011
* With Curry and Dawkins the starting backcourt, and Kelly starting at PF, they’ll have the same problems as last year: 1) no low post scoring, 2) nobody other than Rivers who can create their own shot. If Murphy or Gbinije can’t, it’ll be an interesting season in Durham.
Ceiling: Plumlee can score inside, Murphy is the next Singler, Gbinije is a stud, 22 wins, Top 4 seed in March.
Florida State (25-10, 12-4, 2nd round)
* Incurring heavy losses – starting backcourt, 2nd leading scorer, three biggest interior bodies (Gibson, James, Kreft)
* Leading scorer Michael Snaer is back, as is top reserve Ian Miller (10.3 ppg)
* Probably will be pegged 5th in the conference, a game or two back of Duke
* Will be young in the backcourt, maybe starting two freshman alongside Snaer
Ceiling: Snaer blossoms into a 1st round pick, Terrance Shannon returns from injury and averages 13-9 – 20 wins, Top 6 seed in March.
North Carolina (32-6, 14-2, Elite 8)
* The bad news: Four starters gone
* The good news: SF Reggie Bullock and PF James Michael McAdoo could be better next year than Barnes/Henson were in 2011-2012
* Marshall’s the irreplaceable loss. I’d assume Strickland will start over Stillman White. [UPDATE: A reader says Stillman White is going on a Mormon Mission next year.]
* Shooting guard competition figures to be heated: Watts, Hairston (the favorite), and McDonald.
* Alex Oriakhi’s decision could shape the conference (and possibly, national landscape). With the UConn transfer – who had a better junior year than senior one (when the team was dysfunctional), UNC is tops in the ACC and probably opens the season in the Top 5. Without him? UNC probably might try going small with three guards around Bullock and McDonald.
Ceiling: Strickland handles PG duties, Bullock shoots better than Barnes, McAdoo averages 18-10, Oriakhi joins Heels – 25 wins, ACC title, No. 2 ranking, No. 1 seed in March.

Miami’s got the 3rd best coach in the conference. That could help them. Still, I’ll believe that UNC and Duke are “down” when I see it

My sister went to NCSU — cool campus.
March 30th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
Oriakhi stopped trying when the UConn season started. They didn’t need the chemistry issues for him to not give full effort. He was a bust all year long.
March 30th, 2012 at 3:49 PM
This seems like a good post for after the Final 4, no? As much as you like CBB, I would have thought you’d do a lookahead kind of thing for each league or maybe just one post that discussed each main league. Seems early for this, though.

For Duke – Gbinijie was not a redshirt, he just didn’t play
For UNC – Watts was a senior role player, he’s gone; Stillman White is goinig on a 2-year Mormon mission; incoming freshman Paige more likely to start at PG, with Strickland the SG/backup PG.
March 30th, 2012 at 3:51 PM
YEAH, WHAT, BITCHES?!?
GO TERPS!
Anyways, we’re going to be improved, but we still won’t have a PG, and Len has a lot of growing to do to be a 20-10 guy. Plus, one can only assume both Duke and UNC are still going to be tough, even with mostly new teams.
We’ll be really tough next year, but in 2013-2014, especially if we get the Harrisons (I’ll murder somebody to make that happen, if need be), then look out.
Also, Turgeon is the fucking man.

was reading the Thomas Hill post on Deadspin and on the sidebar where they link to sister sites, a story on Jezebel is entitled “Why Do We Still Romanticize Bareback Sex?”

Can we stop saying Mason Plumlee is headed to the NBA? He hasn’t gone yet. Like almost every college junior with a shot at the NBA, he’s exploring his options. He may decide to go, but he has not decided yet.
Also, Michael Gbinije didn’t redshirt.
March 30th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
This is awesome.
March 30th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
Oriakhi is by all accounts a great kid and student. Calhoun never got the best out of him for some reason.
Actually I think this post is fairly timely in light of the recent draft declarations.
March 30th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
whoa… i thought you were critical of the Turgeon hire at UMD, TBL? i recall you saying he would fail along the same lines as Edsall.
anyways, if Len goes for 20-10 next year, i’m going to pull a lonny baxter and shoot guns in the air outside the white house. that shit just ain’t happening.
maryland will be better next year, but great in two years.
March 30th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
Predictions and drafts, predictions and drafts!!!
March 30th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
I feel like I recall at least one or two digs at Turgeon along the course of the season.
March 30th, 2012 at 3:58 PM
and i HATE to say it, but NCST should be filthy next year.

Turgeon is a choker, obviously. Do you see Maryland in the Final Four?
March 30th, 2012 at 4:01 PM
Duke or UNC will still win the ACC next year. It doesnt look overly promising, but K and Williams are still two of the best in the business. Duke’s been either a 1 or a 2 seed in 14 of the last 16 tournaments. Carolina has had 1 bad year under Roy but otherwise they roll out a roster full of McD’s every year. Obviously they need McAdoo to stay.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:01 PM
She’s a cunt who I wish nothing but horrible things for.
/I don’t throw around that word often, but she is one. Fuck her.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:01 PM
Yes, yes and all that. But why does TBL think he is going to be a player that determines how wins the conference?
March 30th, 2012 at 4:01 PM
Georgetown on Maryland hate!
March 30th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
I can’t be the only one who thinks Roy is a mediocre coach at best, he just gets sick recruits every year.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
because he beats it to big east players and teams.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
I was told Roy Williams was a dumbass who couldn’t coach out of a paper bag, and I’m pretty sure the feds are looking into Coach K’s affinity for 10-year-old dick.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
I was hoping for the ACC football post so we can discuss how Maryland will still finish last next season.
/Fire Randy Edsall
March 30th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
I have no idea what they are bringing in, but what they have coming back looks somewhat promising. Not win the conference promising but not choke themselves out of the tournament promising.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
Ok, I fell for the trap… SERIOUSLY??? He didnt have double digit rebounds in any game this season.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:05 PM

Just randomly watching Youtube clips and holy balls was that ’89 foul call on Rumeal Robinson dubious at best.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
For the Maryland fans here, is Max Garcia, the OL who transferred, any good? Most think he ends up at UGA and I was just curious if he was worth a shit or not.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
ill, you going up to the Maryland-Kentucky game in Brooklyn next season? Bunch of my friends and I just bought tix for that.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
Trey Zeigler visited Duke this week.
/apropos of nothing
March 30th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
He’s good, not an absolutely stud or anything. I think his reputation probably was slightly inflated due to the unbelievable shittiness of our entire line the last few years.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:09 PM
Gotcha. He would have to sit out this year anyway, but it would be great if he could start in 2013 alongside Theus, Andrews and Beard. UGA’s OL should be insane next year, but this year I’m afraid it will be a bit too young to dominate.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:11 PM
There are at least 20 linkbacks for future posts stuffed into this one. Don’t stop TBL’n TBL.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:11 PM
@Husker: when I win MegaMillions, I’m buying into this place, and you can come as my guest.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:12 PM
And I’m stepping out of work to go for a run. This weather is fucking batty.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:15 PM
Whoa. No joke…my eyes lit up when the page loaded.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:18 PM
From everything I read, Oriakhi’s most likely destination is Mizzou
March 30th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
Maryland-Kentucky game
i have not jumped into next year’s sched yet, but if the Harrison twins have not signed by then i’ll go just to recruit those two. i’ll tell them the Calipari is /team Zimmerman
March 30th, 2012 at 4:22 PM
fuck gtown… JTIII is top 5 most overrated coaches in the game.
Really? Because he’s not usually mentioned as one of the best guys. I thought he actually did a really good job this year. FWIW, I don’t hate Maryland
March 30th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
I’d say he’s properly rated as below-average.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:25 PM
Lisk was just on NFL Live. Did pretty good, couple stumbles. Got a “good job Jason” from Herm, which I’m sure made his day.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:25 PM
Really? Because he’s not usually mentioned as one of the best guys. I thought he actually did a really good job this year.
you’re right. i think he’s terribly overrated locally though.
i only hate gtown b/c they don’t play MD (not entirely their fault), they don’t have their own arena, and their top recruits too often under achieve.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:27 PM
It connects to Big Sky, with what may be the best lift ticket in the world.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:27 PM
I’ll probably be criticized for this, but I’ll be eating at Red Robin tonight.

March 30th, 2012 at 4:28 PM
I like JTIII because he did get the Hoyas back to being a consistently top 25 program (that probably gets a few extra votes thrown their way for name recognition). I don’t blame him that he’s not as good as his dad. He’s still pretty good
March 30th, 2012 at 4:29 PM
I hear good things about Red Robin, angry, who’s going to criticize you?
March 30th, 2012 at 4:32 PM
Red Robin is great fast-casual.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:33 PM
Grizz I had the Nate Brown burger at Excuses last night. Hand to god, one of the three best burgers I’ve ever eaten.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:40 PM
Figured it would get lumped in with the Applebees bashing. Actually only been a RR once and it was a long time ago.

If you had the twitter I would show you a picture. It was just perfect.
Cheap beer, really cheap food with tons of quantity and it tastes good, batshit crazy lesbian bartenders. Can’t go wrong.
It’s the local bar for most of my friends, so I kind of got drawn in, but I fell in love with it over time.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:53 PM
Pretty sure this is the fourth time him going pro has been mentioned on this site. I would love for him to come back just for that reason alone.
March 30th, 2012 at 5:02 PM
Don’t be surprised if McAdoo enters the draft on Monday. His dad is saying one thing but apparently he’s having other thoughts.
If this were to happen you might see 4 guards in the UNC starting lineup next year.
March 30th, 2012 at 5:04 PM
If you had the twitter I would show you a picture. It was just perfect.
I do, I just dont link it to my page. Ill do that this weekend.
