The Career Arc of Ryan Tannehill From Receiver at Texas A&M to Potential Top 5 Draft Pick
Ryan Tannehill’s smart. If this football thing doesn’t work out, he’d like to be an orthopedic surgeon. He’s got an attractive fiancee. He’s versatile – he came to Texas A&M as a QB (not the most high-profile recruit), then was moved to WR (where he dominated) and then he went back to QB and thrived. He’s a swell story. That being said … the discussion of Tannehill suddenly being a Top 5 draft pick … seems like a bit of a reach. The ongoing NFL quest to find a franchise QB NOW seems to be leading teams to make irrational decisions. We did this exercise with Blaine Gabbert last year. With that in mind, we went through Nexis and did a thorough search of Tannehill over the last two years, covering his rise from college receiver to Top 5 pick.
August 22, 2010, Abilene Reporter-News
Ryan Tannehill came to Texas A&M as a quarterback but he has been the Aggies’ leading receiver the past two seasons …
However, because Tannehill is such an excellent student – he is a two-time first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection, the Big Spring product will have a decision to make after this football season. A biology major with an eye on becoming an orthopedic surgeon, Tannehill is on schedule to graduate in May. Thus, if Tannehill wants to return for his senior season, he will have to enroll in graduate school.
Sherman, however, recognized Tannehill’s versatility. During his freshman year, Tannehill was the No. 3 quarterback behind Stephen McGee and Johnson. He quickly became a go-to receiver, leading the team and setting a Texas A&M record for freshmen by catching 55 passes for 844 yards and five touchdowns
October 26, 2010, Star Telegram
Both Tannehill and Johnson played well in the Aggies’ 45-10 win at Kansas. Johnson became the school’s all-time leader in total offense, but it wouldn’t be difficult to say that Tannehill was as good, if not better, against a bad Jayhawks team. He completed 12 of 16 passes for 155 yards with three touchdowns. He also ran for a score.
“I was pretty fired up after the game,” said Tannehill, whose primary work this season has been at receiver. He is expected to be the starting quarterback next season.
“It’s a different situation,” Tannehill said. “I wouldn’t say it’s a controversy or anything like that.”
October 31, 2010, Chronicle
Ryan Tannehill, earning his first college start at quarterback in place of Jerrod Johnson, responded with a record-setting afternoon in the Aggies’ 45-27 victory over Texas Tech on Saturday at Kyle Field.
“I thank God and coach Sherman for the opportunity to play,” Tannehill said.
Jan. 8, 2011, Dallas Morning News
But the former receiver was making only his sixth career start in Friday night’s AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic against LSU at Cowboys Stadium, his biggest stage yet.
By night’s end, A&M’s Man of the Year had thrown three interceptions against a celebrated SEC defense, matching his season total of picks entering the bowl. The turnovers contributed to the Aggies’ 41-24 loss, Tannehill’s first since replacing Jerrod Johnson.
Oct 2, 2011, Pro Football Weekly
Ryan Tannehill, Texas A & M Ht: 6-4 1/2
Preseason evaluation: Rollout, bootleg, outside-the-pocket passer with a very competitive on-field temperament that noticeably stands out on tape. Must continue honing his footwork and passing instincts. However, internal clock improved down the stretch, he can extend plays with his feet and is loaded with upside to be groomed. Excels at reading high-tolow on bootleg crossers and has good arm strength to fit the ball into tight windows. Touch, timing and anticipation still require refinement and should continue to improve with experience. Is a very smart, mature, focused team player. Physically possesses all the tools to ascend as a senior. A strong supporting cast and pro-style coaching should accelerate his learning curve.
NFL projection: Top-50 pick.
Oct. 18, 2011, Houston Chronicle
On Monday, an NFL.com draft analyst wrote that Tannehill is second only to Stanford’s Andrew Luck among quarterback prospects and has the “athleticism, arm strength and intangibles to be a star.”
Dec. 18, 2011, Chicago Tribune
The 6-foot-4, 222-pound Tannehill played almost exclusively at wide receiver for the first 30 games of his Texas A&M career. But after winning the quarterback job midway through last season and throwing for 3,415 yards this year, some rate him as the fifth-best quarterback in the draft.
Jan. 26, 2012, Miami Herald
ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. said only Andrew Luck and Griffin have first-round grades among quarterbacks, though some consider Tannehill a late first-rounder.
Feb 21, 2012 Austin Statesman
And Texas A&M’s Ryan Tannehill is emerging as the third-best quarterback available behind Luck and Griffin. If there’s an early run on quarterbacks, like there was last April when four were picked in the top 12, Tannehill could hear his name called far earlier than many projected when the season ended.
Feb. 25, 2012, Express News
Tannehill’s inexperience isn’t the only challenge he’ll have to overcome. A few days after starting his pre-combine workouts, he broke a foot, an injury that prevented him from playing for Washington coach Mike Shanahan in the Senior Bowl last month.
“It’s frustrating,” Tannehill said. “I definitely wanted to go to the Senior Bowl and showcase my abilities, as well as get to work with an NFL staff. There are a lot of other great quarterbacks in this draft, and I was looking forward to competing with them.”
Tannehill had a screw inserted into his foot and won’t be able to work out until mid-March, a timeline that should result in him throwing at the Aggies’ pro day March 29. While he’ll have to wait to show off his arm, his chance to show off his mind is at hand.

Please elaborate.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:11 PM
We did this exercise with Blaine Gabbert last year.
TBL: Who ever heard of Blaine Gabbert before last offseason?
A (from a million and one draft blogs/NFL scouting services/Yahoo! Sports/et al): Everybody. He’s been considered a 1st round prospect since he was 17.
TBL: Yep. I’d never heard of him, either.
Having said that, Tannehill actually fits your Gabbert narrative from last year much better than Gabbert did.

At some point people will start to realize B12 Qbs are fraudy stat compilers. Is there a B12 QB in the top half of nfl qbs? Top 2/3rd?
Total bust.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:14 PM
Player bio or Craigslist Casual Encounter ad?
March 29th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
Top 2/3rd?
Josh Freeman?
March 29th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
If he’s so smart, then he should ditch the fiancee.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
Where do any of those things say he’s a top five pick?
March 29th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
He eats the pussy, he eats the butt, he eats every muthafuckin’ thang!
March 29th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
Where do any of those things say he’s a top five pick?
he’s listed as a top 5 draft choice in one of the mock drafts TBL pretends not be to copying from.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
TBL called up Tom Heckert.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:19 PM
He used Nexis, OK? The research was thorough.
My drew my own conclusion, and I concluded that Tannehill continued to improve as a QB as he got the opportunity to play QB. Revolutionary shit.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:20 PM
Hipster scouts (ironically?) declare unheralded QB to be the shit. Some months later scenester scouts earnestly embrace this opinion. Finally by draft day everyone is wearing neon skinny jeans chugging PBR and making jackasses of themselves.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:20 PM
and I concluded that Tannehill continued to improve as a QB as he got the opportunity to play QB. Revolutionary shit.
by using my context clues, I also am able to intuit that quarterbacks tend to have high draft choices used on them regularly. It seems to be a position that teams reach for. I learned that by reading sports blogs.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:23 PM
He was the preseason Big 12 OPOY and then lost his job to a wide receiver. Now a Pittsburgh Steeler, apparently.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:23 PM
I’m assuming to Cleveland?
March 29th, 2012 at 2:23 PM
Thanks for not copying my bad grammar, Dirt.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:23 PM
He isn’t yet, but Bradford will be by season’s end.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
Maybe not. I’d be willing to bet if JaMarcus Russell had a fiancee right before the draft, she was much better looking than anything he could pull right now.
/Might be a bust
//According to some here who think Big 12 QB’s are frauds and are stat compilers
///Not saying I disagree. See: Daniel, Chase. Kingsbury, Kliff – or any Texas Tech QB for that matter. Simms, Chris.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:25 PM
I’m assuming to Cleveland?
I’ve seen two separate ones. One where Cleveland takes him at 4 (which was a dumb one) and one where Miami jumps to 4 to take him, because they fear losing him to Cleveland (that one seemed better on the whole).
I judge whether a draft is dumb by who they have Dallas taking at 14. If they have Dallas taking DeCastro (after signing to FA guards) or Barron or the 3rd of the pass rushers, it’s dumb.
Otherwise, it’s not necessarily dumb. The second one had them taking Kirkpatrick.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:26 PM
Based on the 5 games he’ll play in?
March 29th, 2012 at 2:26 PM
Gabbert was a 5 star recruit coming out of High School and at least at Mizzou, it was always assumed he would bolt early to the NFL. Nothing at all like Tannehill in terms of skyrocketing up the Mock Drafts.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:27 PM
I just hope whoever drafts him is shrewd enough to let him learn for two years from a veteran presence.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:28 PM
Thanks for not copying my bad grammar, Dirt.
it’s because I was embarrassed for you. For god sakes look at yourself. Just look at yourself.
You’ve got one job, one fucking job, and you fucked that up too.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:28 PM
Injured his shoulder and lost his father during his senior season. Loads of talent but never seemed to recover.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:28 PM
i have not been able to understand why tannehill is now a top 10 pick. he was ok at aggieland, when he was not backing up stephen mcgee and the craptastic jerrod johnson. smells fraudy in here, and tannhill has stink lines coming off of him.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:29 PM
I just hope whoever drafts him is shrewd enough to let him learn for two years from a veteran presence.
in this business, that’s called a hedge. You now can’t lose on your prediction that he’ll be good. Because even if he gets the two years, you can just disavow the veteran he learned from.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:32 PM
Tannehill will suck. He was a deer in headlights against Texas. A week afterward RGIII eviscerated Texas. That’s all you need to know.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:32 PM
I agree with what Mike Mayock had to say:
March 29th, 2012 at 2:33 PM
Also some buzz that if both the Browns and Dolphins are interested in Tannehill, that the Vikings might put some pressure on them and they would need to trade up to #3.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:33 PM
Doesn’t move the needle.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:33 PM
Griffin didn’t do anything against a garbage A&M defense in 2012. Strip his Heisman and relegate him to the CFL.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:34 PM
Also some buzz that if both the Browns and Dolphins are interested in Tannehill, that the Vikings might put some pressure on them and they would need to trade up to #3.
As long as they get Kalil, I would love to see them get more picks.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:35 PM
NFL proving once again they have no fucking clue how to evaluate college QBs.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
You think Locker should have been a 3rd rounder?
March 29th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
28/40 for 430 yards, 3 TD, 1 INT. Pretty dreadful.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:40 PM
Griffin didn’t do anything against a garbage A&M defense in 2012
28/40 for 430 yards, 3 TDs, 1 pick against “deruyter’s new wrecking crew” is pretty damn good.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:41 PM
28/40 for 430 yards, 3 TD, 1 INT. Pretty dreadful.
as you probably know, aggies can justify anything.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:42 PM
Stop with the stats guys…Urinal Mint already gave that game an eye test.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:42 PM
Like having Mark Sanchize and Tim Tebow competing for the starting job.

Stop with the stats guys…Urinal Mint already gave that game an eye test.
I greatly enjoy the fact that the internet makes statements like this possible.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:44 PM
LB Philip Wheeler is on his way to visit the Raiders. I was unfamiliar with his work…so I checked the internet.
From Wikipedia:

Stop with the stats guys…Urinal Mint already gave that game an eye test.
i will not miss unfounded bold aggie predictions and when those go in the toilet, the factless arguements they then try to have on why YOUR team sucks.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:47 PM
Won’t say he was a bust but more was expected of him.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:48 PM
God. Damnit.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:48 PM
Is my gravatar appearing as the same one Dirt uses to anybody else, or just me? Checked on gravatar.com and it’s still set to Chris Polk there…
March 29th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
Philip Wheeler was terrifying when he was at GT. I’ll never forget when he tried to murder Brady Quinn.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
lol
March 29th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
Isn’t the “given a healthy season” qualifier applicable to anyone in the NFL? He had a high ankle sprain last year; it’s not like he has a history of concussions or something else that would indicate he can’t stay on the field.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
Wow, let’s take a facetious comment about Griffin and put it on a pedestal.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:51 PM
Hasn’t he had two major injuries and one surgery to his throwing shoulder already as well?
March 29th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
This, too, is a huge joke. That defense was outed against Okie Lite and never recovered.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
Wow, let’s completely misuse the idiom “put it on a pedestal.”
March 29th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
wow, lets throw each other “under the bus.”
March 29th, 2012 at 2:55 PM
Jerome Bettis is from Detroit.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:55 PM
holy shit…
March 29th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
Should I only use it when referring to pussy? Or are we only allowed to use it when we want to worship rather than mock?
March 29th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
Wow, let’s dance.
/turns up Journey.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
Pretty sure in the last 3 years he’s missed more games than he’s appeared in.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:57 PM
Depends on how clean the pedestal is.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:57 PM
i dont want to believe that a tornado 5 times the size of earth exists. We’re all fucked.

I WANT. TO. MOCK!
MOCK!
TURN IT DOWN YOU SAY. SHEEBY DEEBY LA LA DUH-NA-NA-NA-NA NA MOCK!
March 29th, 2012 at 2:58 PM
Twisted Sister? Really?
March 29th, 2012 at 2:59 PM
He’s only had one major injury (right shoulder) which required surgery. He missed most of his final college season as a result. He started all 16 games his rookie season, and 10 games last season – missed 6 as a result of a high ankle sprain.
I have more concerns about his sophmore regression than I do his health. A competant coaching staff and improved WR corps should do wonders.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:59 PM
really.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:59 PM
This, too, is a huge joke. That defense was outed against Okie Lite and never recovered.
now that i know your rgIII comment was sarcastic, you sound like a reasonable aggie. rare in these parts.

He’s got a love/hate relationship with guys who wear makeup. See Deville, C.C.
March 29th, 2012 at 3:00 PM
well, we’re kinda fucked any way you spin it. either way, we’re only here for 80 or so years, so fuck it…play golf, spend $, do drugs, die young.

How does that explain his unending love for Bruce Dickinson? Who, by the way is a battle tank aficionado.
I trust the nuptials went well? Congratulations!
March 29th, 2012 at 3:03 PM
They got hot and won outta nowhere that year. If you want to call it a major sport.

im a metal mormon polygamist. and in the church of latter day hellspawn, they don’t find anything wrong with that.
March 29th, 2012 at 3:08 PM
The A&M “minor” sports have been kicking ass. Track and Field comes to mind. I am the rare Longhorn who is hoping they do really well in the SEC.

I trust the nuptials went well? Congratulations!
They did. Thanks.

Which reminds me is “En Vivo” worth a look? I saw an ad for it on a bus stop yesterday. I think it came out tuesday

meh…stick with route 666. nobody wants to hear new iron maiden songs, especially not iron maiden fans.
March 29th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
MIA should jump CLE or trade up with CLE to take Justin Blackmon. This guy is a cant miss WR, in my opinion. I wouldn’t take Tannehill to the 2nd/3rd rounds, but other teams are gonna get antsy and jump the gun on this guy and make him “their man” at QB and he will be Gabbert all over.
/crosses fingers and prays MIA doesn’t make this bone-headed move.
March 29th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
Sex offender before execution: “Go Cowboys!”
March 29th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
Tannehill = Gabbert 2.0
March 29th, 2012 at 3:58 PM
Ryan Lindley might the most interesting of them all. Don’t get me wrong – I don’t draft as my franchise QB, but I sure like having him on my roster more so than Stanton, Chris Redmon, Greg McElroy, others. Accuracy is an issue but I think reps will fix that. My guess is that the Packers pick him up on day 3 and in 3 years he’s the next Matt Flynn.
March 29th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
He needs to go to a team that will let him learn for 2-3 seasons and not Gabbert him.
March 29th, 2012 at 4:01 PM
Well, if he’s gonna be stuck watching them in Hell’s Sports Bar for all eternity, they better be decent.
March 29th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
Also a great cheesy horror flick by that name starring Lori Petty and Lou Diamond Phillips.
