Mariners Beat A’s in 11 innings, But No One Watched Because it Wasn’t Televised Live [UPDATE]
The first game of the Major League Baseball season was played this morning in Japan between the Oakland A’s and Seattle Mariners. Amazingly, the game was not shown live at its official start time of 6:10 am Eastern, but rather on tape delay three hours later on the MLB Network. Tape delay!
When is the last time tape delay was a common expression when it comes to a major sport? The NBA Finals in the mid-80s? This is the opening game of the season in the year 2012, an age where you literally have to shut down the entire world around you not to find out the score of a game. So how it was not shown live regardless of start time remains more puzzling than Ken Rosenthal’s true height.
Imagine if someone in the NFL league office had the gall to suggest they broadcast a football game on tape delay. They would be unceremoniously thrown into a trunk and sent to the Pine Barrens with Christopher and Paulie Walnuts.
To make matters even more embarrassing, at 9 am, when the riveting tape-delayed broadcast began to air on the MLB Network, the actual game was in the 11th inning. So rather than have baseball fans who had just woken up tune in to see the finish, they were left with two options: Scan Twitter for real-time updates or watch the first at-bat of a game that began three hours ago. I went with choice ‘C’ and attacked myself with a penny-loaded sock.
Tomorrow’s game is also being shown on tape delay. Then the A’s and Mariners travel back to the states while the other 28 teams don’t begin playing games that count for another six days. But of course. Baseball! This whole thing makes less sense than Tim McCarver’s disturbing solo album.
[UPDATE: Lorraine Fisher of the MLB Network sent us an email saying that "based on fan response, we realize the better decision is to air tomorrow's 2nd game of the series live at 5 am, then re-air it immediately after and again at 10 pm."]

While most of the vitriol thrown towards baseball by TBL is unwarranted, tape delay is just inexcusable.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
There were moving pictures of the game. It just wasn’t on a standard TV channel. My Apple TV had no issues streaming that sucker from the MLB.tv app. That’s how I watched the 8th inning. First 3 on the laptop, next 4 on the radio with the At-Bat app for my phone.
I still agree with the overall sentiment of the post though. It should have been on TV for the people that wanted to watch the season opener and don’t want to purchase MLB.tv. It’s baseball. You should be able to see the first pitch of the season on ESPN or MLBN. If it were the Red Sox, Phillies, Cubs, Yankees, Braves or other team with a national fan base, someone would have picked it up.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
the Olympics as recently in the past decade.
but seriously, it’s the A’s and Mariners. The only people staying up for it are A’s and Mariners fans, degenerate gamblers and the minority of baseball fans who need a baseball fix before their choice teams start playing.
big deal.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
or, no one watched because it was the a’s and mariners in a country that already has its own MLB and it was on when most of the U.S. was asleep
March 28th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
Dont know what they were thinking on this one. I’m just gonna ignore that these 2 games happened. Except for McCarthy having a solid outing for my fantasy team.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
I thought it was shown live, at the very least, on the local sports channels.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
I have more issue with starting the season in Japan than anything. If you want to put a game over there, don’t make it the first pitch of the season. Put it on the 2nd day of the season when most teams have their off day after the opener. Not six days before anyone else plays a meaningful game in the states.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
They would be unceremoniously thrown into a trunk and sent to the Pine Barrens with Christopher and Paulie Walnuts.
Topical!

//absolutely 100% behind you: live or GTFO
March 28th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
Pretty sure it was shown live in their home markets.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
It’s the league’s SEASON OPENER. Terrible time to volunteer yourself for horrific PR.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
It was on ROOT Sports in Washington State and parts of Oregon/British Columbia. What really sucks is that the Oakland TV station that covers the A’s chose not to broadcast the game. People in Oakland that had MLB.tv and wanted to watch got stuck with blackout rules. That’s something that MLB needs to fix.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
Unreal.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
It’s ok though, because they’re basically still marketing the Cards/Marlins Wednesday nighter as the REAL opener.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
We’re overlooking the fact that they shouldn’t fucking have “opening day” in Japan six days before any other teams play.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
Mike & Mike are too powerful to be bumped for regular season baseball these days, unfortunate
Agreed, but more because this will be the case of all A’s-Mariners games this season and not this fuck-up
March 28th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
A an mariner not on tv? IMPOSSIBRU!!!
March 28th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
Dont know what they were thinking on this one. I’m just gonna ignore that these 2 games happened.
right, and then we have to wait a few days for the other openers. just bad idea jeans all around
March 28th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
No, it just needs to stop. Do an exhibition game there during spring training, fine. Keep our real games at home. This goes for the NFL, too.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
this isn’t the NFL where one game during the week with the SB champ officially kicks off the season.
Baseball has ALWAYS been about the first day of league wide play starting at 1pm and ending at 7pm during the week.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
Is that you, Yuri?
March 28th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
Doesn’t matter. Baseball fans get excited about the first official game no matter who’s playing. One of the most asinine sports-related decisions in quite some time.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
yurimoto, actually.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
Good luck with that.
Except for the ESPN Sunday night opener.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
Also, the guys for the Mariners (Dave Sims who is awesome) weren’t even in Japan. They were watching on a monitor and giving play-by-play/commentary. The only people that were actually in Japan were the players, fans and radio guys for each team.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
I agree completely with the sentiment in this post, however, this game was probably pumped live to all of the markets that MLB is targeting, you know Japan, South Korea, Australia, Thailand, Indonesia. You know, where MLB is investing money into its future and player development.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
awesome caption.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
It’s a major sports league and it’s 2012. Tape delay is not on the list of options. Fin.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
guess i’m just old fashioned getting excited for leaguewide play during afternoon games during the week.
/baseball traditionalist
March 28th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
Looks like Selig’s trying drop a deuce in that pic.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
I actually will miss that. Feels weird starting the season with a Wednesday nighter and day games on a Thursday.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
This tape delay crap coupled with an obvious overpay for the Dodgers could be the death knell for MLB.
/idiots
March 28th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
Uh Magic Johnson just purchased the Dodgers for $2b bro.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
Interesting, in my time with Extra Innings I found the Seattle and Kansas City crews to be the dullest in the league (since on my cable you couldn’t choose which TV feed to watch I was stuck with the Mariner guys for an entire series once, thought they had about as much life as their franchise)
March 28th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
Of all the examples of baseball mismanagement you could have chosen, this is certainly the most…current.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
bite your lip and give it hell.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
Agreed, thought the Mariner guys were horrific. Kansas City guys I just felt bad for, they were obviously bored.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
Well, sorry that a game you wouldn’t have watched anyway wasn’t live.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
So anyways… King Felix went 8 strong innings but had to pitch out of multiple jams just to allow the one run. 104 pitches on Opening Day isn’t too bad though. Ichiro had 4 hits in his native country. Dustin Ackley hit a tater and drove in the game winning run. McCarthy was much more economical with his pitches. The Oakland A’s managed to not draw a single walk in the entire contest.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
did you set your alarm to watch the broadcast live?
March 28th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
I think a better description of it would be “SEASON OPENER”. Yes, the games count, but few people are really treating it as the opening of the season.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
Yeah but on the flip side then it’s brilliant to have the season end in the middle of the week where there’s no sports competition…just look at the fun of Game 162 last year (uh, maybe not for you), wouldn’t have been nearly the same if people also had NFL games in play
March 28th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
I found out last night, so no.
Can’t believe anyone thinks tape delay is anywhere close to acceptable. If you choose to send your league across the globe, go all-in or bag the shitty idea.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
Shoulda went with “Mark Sanchez’s sexual orientation”.

March 28th, 2012 at 11:50 AM
I’m so happy the Twins did not select Ryan Lefebvre for the new radio play-by-play guy.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
Hasn’t MLB done this for at least 2 years, if not more?
March 28th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
Ah, i see. An event that you have a problem with being on tape delay was so important to you that you found out last night and didn’t plan on watching it.
hm. if people were going to sleep and watch a DVR of the game later,or catch the end on their mlb.tv device what’s the difference whether it’s live or tape delay?
March 28th, 2012 at 11:52 AM
Ok you guys, but this has been going on for a few years now. Youre acting like this is new.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:52 AM
Japan, yes. But it’s always been live.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:52 AM
today was a soft opening?
March 28th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
Exactly. Like a grocery store. The GRAND opening, with all the balloons and prizes and stuff is next Wednesday.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:55 AM
Why is everyone so down on the Red Sox? There’s no way Bard/Doubrant/Aceves?Buchholz aren’t way better than Wake/Miller/Lackey/DiceK. Ross will be far better than anything they had in right. McDonald looks undead, and won’t be prominently featured once Crawford is back, who couldn’t be any worse. So Beckett/Ellsbury/Ortiz drop a bit. I still don’t see them winning fewer than 90 games.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:55 AM
Needs more Kyoto protocol.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
Not so much down on them as just thinking there are two teams in their division who are better
March 28th, 2012 at 11:58 AM
It’s a good thing, bro. The ‘nobody believes in us’ factor!
But seriously, not making the playoffs 3 years in a row would just be appalling.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:58 AM
Possible. Wouldn’t shock me if team #2 was the Jays and not Rays though. Even still, I don’t see below 90.
Speaking of which, is the 2nd wildcard official now? Seems kind of shady to not have it be official when games have started.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:58 AM

Yes
March 28th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
down in relation to the hype from last year and the front office changes.
I think they are good for 90 wins.

March 28th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
And Matt Moore is not going to be throwing darts in September. When is that last rookie who pitched 200 innings? I still think the Sox are the second best team in that division, talent-wise. Do people think Valentine is going to be worth that many losses?
March 28th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
Target soft openings are the best. Everything is clean and there are barely any people in the store because no one knows it’s open. Plus they have huge sales in celebration of their opening.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
That monster 1-5 is still really good. Ellsbury-Pedroia-Adrian-Youk-Ortiz and I really think Salty is going to be good and I hate Cody Ross so much, but he should thrive. Add in hopefully a solid Crawford when he comes back at the end of April. Red Sox will do very well.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
I thought and hoped so. Reports are that he looked good, and could be in the rotation by July, is my guess, if Bard or Doubrant struggle or have trouble holding up.

/nods at SC
March 28th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
WWoS, did you see the team previws that Htown linked to last week?
Here’s an excerpt from the Sox:
From an expectation standpoint, Boston is in an enviable position entering the 2012 season. Its batters could perform worse overall than last year – in fact they probably will – and the Red Sox still project to win more games this year than they did last year. When they do, the narrative will almost certainly be that they played better in 2012 due to improved clubhouse chemistry and the no-nonsense approach from Bobby Valentine, who commands the respect of the entire squad. That won’t be the case, however. The Red Sox performed like a 99-win club in 2011 and will regress the equivalent of 50 to 60 runs this year. However, with neutral luck this year, that will be good enough for 93 wins, a division title, and a return to the post-season for the first time in three seasons.March 28th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
JHS, come on, be honest. With that payroll, there’s no way they should miss the postseason 3 years in a row. Especially with the 2nd wild card. I really didnt mean to come off ‘detestable’, I’m just stating the facts.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
Kevin Youkilis is 34 years old and has health concerns. Carl Crawford’s wrist is a big question mark. David Ortiz is OLD. Past Lester, there’s a ton of uncertainty in the 3rd best team in the AL East’s rotation. Andrew Bailey was a good closer in the ballpark that has the most foul territory in all of baseball and deep fences. Jacoby Ellsbury is unlikely to duplicate his 2011 numbers.
That enough concerns for the fans of the 3rd best team in the AL East.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
Sox or Rays are winning the AL East.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
last year was a bad year for him, i’d be shocked if he repeated that performance give that he’s had zero indicators in his career it will happen again.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
David Price and James Shields are still better than anything the Red Sox are throwing out there every fifth day. When Matt Moore is your 4th starter, that must be a nice problem to have.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
Yeah, I don’t see him getting 200 IP, but he did pitch 180 IP last year, so a 20-30 IP boost isn’t improbable.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:07 PM
Yeah thats the thing – I dont know how anyone can say the Yankees are leaps and bounds more talented than the Sox. They are just as old, if not older.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:08 PM
Pedroia and Gonzalez should have good seasons. Wouldn’t be surprised if Gonzalez is an MVP candidate again. Still, there’s way too many question marks on Pink Hat Nation’s 25 man roster for them not to be concerned about missing the playoffs. Youkilis’ elbow and Crawford’s wrist being 1 and 2 on that list. Then the starting pitching after Lester and Clay.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:10 PM
They’re older, for sure. A-Rod’s hip. Jeter’s immense decline. CC throwing nearly 950 innings over the last 4 seasons. Tex beginning his decline. They addressed their biggest problems with pitching this offseason though. Pineda and Kuroda are great pick ups.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:10 PM
Did Beckett retire?
March 28th, 2012 at 12:11 PM
/waits for inevitable Phil Hughes flame out, CC gaining the weight back, Pineda shelling to right field every start at home, and for the Eyes of a Goat to regret coming out of retirement
March 28th, 2012 at 12:12 PM
Pineda and Kuroda are good pickups. Cant call them great just yet. pineda pitched in a pitchers park and kuroda was in the light hitting NL west. Stats should decrease for both barring miracles
March 28th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
So, lets discuss the Yanks issues then SC:
Jeter – old, still a terrible defender
Arod – health, declining, etc.
Granderson – could be a fluke
Teixeria – declining rate stats,
Martin – staying health
Kuroda – switching from one of best stadiums for flyball pitcher to one of the worst
Pinenda – can he repeat performance?
Raullll – can’t hit a fastball
Did I miss anything?
March 28th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
Doesn’t Pineda have velocity issues right now?
March 28th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
Nope. Shouldn’t be expected to anchor a staff anymore. He also has health problems. #3 starter is the proper expectation.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:14 PM

March 28th, 2012 at 12:15 PM

March 28th, 2012 at 12:15 PM
So the rays are banking on Farnsworth to have another great season and they are relying on Carlos Pena to not strikeout 200+ times? Fantastic
March 28th, 2012 at 12:15 PM
i lolled
March 28th, 2012 at 12:16 PM
Nope. About as many concerns as the 3rd best team in the AL East. I like their pitching more than I like Boston’s though. They also don’t have that giant anvil hanging above them that says “biggest collapse in the history of regular season baseball” from last year.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:16 PM
But honestly, pre season predictions are crap. Doesnt matter. What you expect to happen probably wont happen. And thats why I love baseball.
Anyone else watch the Fenway Park special on PBS the other night? Fantastic.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:17 PM
Only pitchers yankee fans should trust are CC, Hammer of God, and Robertson. Its hard to see Nova repeating last year’s rookie performance
March 28th, 2012 at 12:17 PM
Relatively small problems compared to those in Boston and New York.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
Jake McGee or Archer will be taking that Closer spot eventually. And strikeouts don’t mean anything, just another out. Pena still walks 100x per year and provides 30-40HR power. He’s good at what he does. Also is very good defensively.
/fantasy owner of Pena

March 28th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
you didn’t come off as detestable, Sawx fans in general are just the worst, besides yankees fans, or course. CJ, despite the Sawx thing, you ain’t half bad.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
Hey! Thats exactly my point.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
Go Royals.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
But can he hit curve ball?
March 28th, 2012 at 12:20 PM
SC, those are big problems if you can only compete if your young pitchers remain healthy. TB doesn’t have the offense to outslug teams. Sure, they have price, moore, shields, and niemann but we saw major chinks in Price’s armor last year (injury and mechanics). They have a lot of arms but im not so sure they’ll all be reliable this year. The gap between the yanks, sox, and rays is a lot closer than people think.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:20 PM
And I agree with you. I still like the Yankee rotation better than the Red Sox. They’ll both battle injuries all year. If either Cano or Gonzalez goes down, their respective teams are screwed.
The Rays have almost no pressure (especially from fans) and are loaded with young talent. They’re going to run roughshod on both aging rosters in Boston and New York.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:20 PM
Never.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
So is girardi gonna keep fucking Brett gardner over and not put him at leadoff instead of the captain?
March 28th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
How many games will they win the division by? Care to make a wager?
March 28th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
Robbie Cano, MVP.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
Unless Longo and BJ have stellar years, the Rays won’t make the playoffs.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
TJ – Price had better periphals and results last year then he had in 2010. More strikeouts, less walks, lowerer FB% and a lower HR/Flyball. He’s only getting better and is very intelligent as well.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
Of the league, or your heart?
March 28th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
That would be incredibly stupid
March 28th, 2012 at 12:24 PM
The problem is that it’s either leadoff or 8/9 for Jeter. So the answer to your question is yes.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:24 PM
Desmond Jennings will be the truth. You are seriously underrating him dude. Also, more Matt Joyce and less Sam Fuld will help.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:25 PM
Batting title seems more likely. I’ll take either.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:25 PM

/pokes bear
March 28th, 2012 at 12:25 PM
I still like the Yankees to win the division. Not by more than 2 games though. I’ve got LAA, TEX, DET, TB and NYY in the playoffs out of the AL with TB and the West runner up playing in the 1 game playoff.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:25 PM
Witnessed…
March 28th, 2012 at 12:26 PM
Welp, you arent making any sense. Moving on..
March 28th, 2012 at 12:26 PM
You’re assuming i am ignoring jennings, mantis. Dont get your fantasy baseball panties in a bunch. Im just saying that the rays need to have monster years from longo and upton to win it all. Jennings is really good but hes not going to carry a team offensively
March 28th, 2012 at 12:26 PM
I don’t get this. They (and Buchholz) gave Boston pretty much nothing last year. Anything they give is a bonus. It goes counter to your point.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
If we want to talk about a team being overvalued- give me the angels. Great starting pitching, got pujols, but not a lot of lineup depth. Theyll make the playoffs but that offense will not be good as predicted
March 28th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
They can win the season series against both Boston and New York and still lose the division, CJ. I think Tampa will struggle with the better offenses in Detroit, LAA and Texas. Pitching against those teams will be more challenging than in the division. Boston and New York can slug with those teams. Tampa can’t.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:31 PM
This just in: MLB admits it fucked up, the game tomorrow morning will air live
March 28th, 2012 at 12:31 PM
Mike aviles is a bigger liability than the crawford/youk concerns. Iglesias needs to hit decently in AAA so he can get called up ASAP. I dont want to see Aviles at SS the entire season
March 28th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
Until Jose comes up, Punto will get some playing time too
March 28th, 2012 at 12:37 PM
Put me down for the Orioles in the East.
March 28th, 2012 at 12:38 PM
I partially disagree. Pujols is great. But Kendrick had a really nice season, Bourjos will improve and Hunter is what he is. Iannetta was a nice pickup as well. They just need to get rid of Vernon Wells and play Mike Trout. Oh, and I will buy fully into Kendrys Morales coming back and ripping shit up.
