ESPN’s Ombudsman Chimes in on Bob Knight and Trayvon Martin
ESPN’s Ombudsman has weighed in on two topics we’ve discussed in these waters recently – Bob Knight and “Kentucky” and the Worldwide Leader’s Trayvon Martin/social media change of heart.
First, on Knight, presented without comment:
ESPN sees that system as a necessary compromise given the reality of the sports world’s big salaries and big egos, and we have a fair amount of sympathy for their dilemma. But it means ESPN has to be very careful about policing that system — and making clear what is and is not acceptable.
That’s particularly true given the overlap in roles between ESPN’s star analysts and its journalists. Analysts don’t necessarily have to be rigorously objective — as ESPN’s journalists do — but they do have to be fair, and professional in how they treat their subjects. Sports bona fides don’t preclude ESPN’s celebrity analysts from doing excellent work for viewers and readers; many of them do. But if that work is unfair or unprofessional, it besmirches the work of ESPN journalists who have to live by different rules.
And now Martin, also sans comment from the peanut gallery:
Journalists and other ESPN employees sit on a perch of influence. So they have an enormous reach. They should take that role seriously. When you become part of the story, you lose your ability to tell an independent story. Although it seems sympathetic, and even morally superior, to offer up a political commentary, leave that to the athletes – many, including members of the Miami Heat, showed support for Martin — and, instead, find a way to help the audience better understand the story. (ESPN NBA columnist Michael Wallace wrote about the Heat sending a message of support for Martin last weekend).

You know full well that he just doesn’t know what a peanut gallery is.

There is an amazing radio beef between clay travis (Tennessee) and Matt Jones (Kentucky)

It’s in the Trayvon Martin quote, but feels more appropriate in the Bob Knight quote:
Anyway, back to the bees.

Jason, I’ve waited a long time to comment on you being all butthurt because Bobby Knight hung up on your sorry ass. You need to let it go….let’s deal with the facts:
a) you are NOT a journalist or anything resembling a journalist
b) you have obvious and admitted biases, not only towards teams, or regions, but also for specific sports
c) if it doesn’t fit your agenda, then you feel it deserves your criticism
Here’s my main point – you present yourself as a credential journalist and you claim to run an objective sports blog. Neither of these are true – when this was your pre 7 figure hobby, that was one thing; you were the Master of your Domain. But now that you got corporate ownership, you are operating under a pretense of “traditional” or “objective” journalism which is just a complete fallacy.
Just call it what it is – you’re a fan(atic) with the inherent bias that comes with it. You don’t like Knight, and you felt entitled to an honest answer to his question, when you basically engaged in subterfuge and harassment.
Grow up – either be a biased fan, or an objective journalist/blogger. It doesn’t go both ways at your every whim.

//pours one out for me……

If you want traditional journalism Vortex of Negativity, there’s always the AP. When was it stated that when TBL got its “corporate ownership” that it would change and or operate under any pretense that you see fit?

I don’t necessarily want traditional journalism – I just want McIntyre to quit representing himself as a real journalist. His whining over his call to Knight is just lame, and trying to pass himself off as a journalist is just flat out stupid. He uses the “press” card when it’s convenient to him, and he uses the “blogger not journalist” card when it’s convenient.
/honestly comes here for the comments
//and the horrible round up pics
///and Duffy’s vocabulary
March 28th, 2012 at 11:11 PM
A lot of blogs do that, in fact most do. TBL never said he was going to cover every sport evenly, or every subject objectively. It’s his site – that’s it.
Again, a lot of blogs/”journalists” want it both ways, like oh…I don’t know…
March 28th, 2012 at 11:12 PM
Or at least Jones DID. Haven’t listened to his show/read his blog in a while so he may have changed. He’s not a big a jerk/douche as he used to be…so there’s that.
