Scott Reid’s Logic for Not Voting Anthony Davis 1st Team All-American is Astoundingly Stupid
One of the two basketball writers who didn’t vote Kentucky star Anthony Davis 1st team All-American has spoken.
The only problem is that what Scott Reid of the OC Register is saying makes absolutely no sense. Take it away, Scotty!:
In doing these ballots I’ve tried to vote for a team and not just five forwards or guards. I still ended up having only one guard on a first team of Marcus Denmon, Missouri; Draymond Green, Michigan State; Tyler Zeller, North Carolina; Thomas Robinson, Kansas and Kevin Jones, West Virginia.
You’ll have to pardon me while I pick my jaw up from the floor. Kevin Jones?
If I had a second though about my ballot it’s not putting a second guard on the first team. Green and Robinson are the best two players in the country.
Reid, clearly, is clueless. He didn’t define “best,” but rather tossed it out there matter-of-factly as if it were a true statement. Green had a terrific senior season and a wonderful career. No argument he earned the Big 10 player of the year. Also, no mention that in non-conference games against Duke and UNC back in November, Green had as many turnovers (10) as he did field goals. That’s going against future NBA players Robinson Mason and Miles Plumlee, Zeller and Henson. Green is a 1st team All-American, but not the best player in the country.
Zeller was the player of year in what is year in and year out the best conference in the country, the ACC.
The most preposterous statement in his entire defense. The ACC hasn’t been the best conference in the country in awhile. It probably was the 4th best conference in the country last season (Big East, Big 12, Big Ten).
Reid goes on to list the point and rebound totals by WVU’s Kevin Jones against quality competition. Jones was the best player on an offensively-challenged team. Of course he’s going to take more shots and score more points! Is Reid serious with this?
Scott Reid, please give your AP vote to someone who watches and pays attention to the sport. [OC Register]

Your buddy Dan Wolken said it best…who cares? Answer: Other than UK fans…nobody.

If there is a universal choice, then what in the fuck is the point of having voters?
Nothing wrong with this. At least he was willing to show his thought process.
March 27th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
Zeller was the player of year in what is year in and year out the best conference in the country, the ACC.
Wrong on both counts
TBF to Reid, this is like one of those years when Jordan was so dominant that people just took it as a matter of fact and began to vote for Malone or Barkley as MVPs.
March 27th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
Kevin Jones would’ve been Big East POY if not for the anti-Big 12 bias.
March 27th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
pick up your damn jaw. Kevin Jones ain’t chopped liver.
//Money Earnin’ represent!!

At the end of the day, does anyone really care about these awards? Do they affect draft status? Not like these kids have contracts that give them bonuses for these awards.
March 27th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
WHAT ABOUT THE SUN TIMES STORY THOUGH
March 27th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
Remember, we’re grading these guys based on college, not pro potential.
Kevin Jones averaged 20-11 in a much tougher conference. Granted, he didn’t play defense like Anthony Davis, but there’s nothing wrong at all with him being on the team.
March 27th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
They didn’t play Kentucky
My offer to work as post fact-checker still stands
March 27th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
I agree, KJ is definitely a stud. That being said, you can’t pick him over Davis.
March 27th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
I’m still interested in the logic of putting Jimmer on the All-Rookie team.
March 27th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
He’s basically saying “I don’t deserve to vote”. But I agree with Jay V. As a Kentucky fan I can tell you, Kentucky fans are the worst about this stuff. We can’t be an All-American. We have to be unanimous. We can’t just beat Louisville by 7. We have to beat them 15+ and Marquis Teague needs to play much better. If we win #8 on Monday, how long will it be until we get #9. Relax. Just enjoy the ride because what a ride it has been.
/Scott Reid is still a clown for voting Kevin Jones over Davis
//Does he realize Jae Crowder was the POY in the Big East and not Jones?
///If that’s his argument, at least have Crowder as your forward on the team.

JMac, if you were going for a media member take down, I think you could have done a lot better than this. You could have cited more of the factual evidence that you seem to imply and your case would be so much stronger, rather than devaluing your argument with things like “Is Reid serious with this?” Instead, you tend to argue against Reid in the same vague manner that Reid is arguing for his picks. I don’t know a ton about college bball, and I just didn’t come away feeling like Reid was all that incorrect based on what you told me.
March 27th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
Yep, shitty Big East football cost himthe POY.
March 27th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
if you make up a your dream starting five in the NBA, is k-love on it? how is his d?
March 27th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
so the net effect of all of this is that anthony davis is still a 1st team all american and some more people talk about kevin jones’ season?
March 27th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
My offer to work as post fact-checker still stands
you and JHS could star in Office Space 2: The Massacre
March 27th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
Point remains, Green had 0 points and 0 rebounds against Kentucky. Not exactly All-American material.
March 27th, 2012 at 11:02 AM

Lisk would have had some stats and data from the last 5 years to show how dominant Davis was — thus proving Reid was wrong.
March 27th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
who?
March 27th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
Other than the Zeller/ACC comment, I don’t have a problem with anything this guy said.
March 27th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
They didn’t play Kansas either.
March 27th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
Awesome.
He probably meant Duke and North Carolina. He had 10 turnovers in those games.
Also averaged 12 points and 13 rebounds.
March 27th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
Way to make me look bad during my job interview…but nice catch
March 27th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
And one of those games was played on a damn aircraft carrier
March 27th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
on a smaller scale, when i had to pick all-area teams, my own main rule was to be able to explain a tough choice if someone challenged it, and those types of arguments are not usually won with stats comparisons
March 27th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
Way to make me look bad during my job interview…but nice catch
and uh, what is yoour facebook password, mr. um, butters is it?
March 27th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
The devil’s advocate (trolling) argument should have been that if you take Kevin Jones away from WVU, they’re not even an NIT team. Take Anthony Davis away from UK and they’re still a 3 seed or better in the tourney.
March 27th, 2012 at 11:13 AM
I know I say this a lot, but this is the most TBL post ever.
They played Duke and UNC.
MSU and Kentucky have played I think six times in the last thirty years and not once since 2003 I think.
March 27th, 2012 at 11:14 AM
If we’re going to use early-season OOC games, why not mention that Davis had 14-6-7 against Kansas, 7-9-2 against UNC, and 6-9-3 against Indiana?
March 27th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
Is All-American an MVP award? If not, the “take X player out and see what his team would do” argument holds no water.
March 27th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
So we’ll detract from AD because his coach is a great recruiter?
March 27th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
Not sure there’s a true definition either way. I’m not saying I would have voted that way, although, you could argue life is made much easier for a player based on his supporting cast
March 27th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
The fact he only made second-team All-America is evidence of the liberal East Coast media elite’s bias against hillbillies.
March 27th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
If the internet has taught me anything, it’s that if you are a good recruiter in CBB, you must also be a bad coach who chokes at the thought of choking.
March 27th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
Christ, we’re
talking about Jeremy Lin?
March 27th, 2012 at 11:52 AM
I watched Davis play in over half of his games this year, and while he is beastly, he strikes me as having a ways to go. He disappears when a grown man is playing D, has no post moves, and gets most of his points on lobs and putbacks. His defense is awesome to behold, but at the next level, I have a feeling he will disappoint for a few years. That said, Reid and Mansch are morons for not voting him 1st team AA.
March 27th, 2012 at 1:24 PM
Basketball is fun
March 27th, 2012 at 2:25 PM
If you are going to vote for such a prestigious award, you should care. This guy obviously doesn’t. It is an award for the five best players, not by position, and not using an MVP standard. To leave Davis off is ignorant.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:34 PM
I’ve read the last few articles you wrote about college basketball and i’m starting to realize you don’t know shit about basketball. Mason and Miles Plumlee are future NBA players? Did you watch them this year? I’m the biggest Duke fan and I don’t think they’ll be in the NBA in a year. Maybe make a team, but play? The Big East, the Big 12 and the Big 10? Is that in opposite order? The Big East is overrated every year and just because they get all 16 teams in the tourney doesn’t make them good. The Big Ten was by far the best conference. Stick with what you know which is knowing which girls date athletes. Those are the only entertaining stories on this site.
