Kentucky, Louisville, Kansas and Ohio State are a Historic Final Four Quartet
A year after the wildest, least-chalk filled Final Four ever, we have probably the most historical grouping in a Final Four ever. There are a variety of ways to look at this. If we go by just national championships, then any Final Four that had UCLA would be at the top, on the strength of just one of the participants.
For example, in 1970, the Final Four featured the winningest program ever, along with three others (Jacksonville, St. Bonaventure, and New Mexico State) who had never before or since appeared in a Final Four. I don’t think we want to look at just total championships won, because UCLA would carry matchups. No one would think that 1970 Final Four pairing was a historical group of Final Four participants.
Here is are the Top Ten Final Fours, as measured by the total Final Four appearances for all four programs (from 1939-2012, and not just at the time of the event).
* Note: I’m not mailing it in to Kentucky for 2012, just listing the four teams by current listed odds of winning for formatting.
If we look at the top programs of the NCAA Tournament Era (1939 to present), then we have four of the top seven (along with UCLA, North Carolina and Duke). Every team has a national title to its credit, something that you can say about only 16 of the 73 other Final Four groups.

If only we’d had Duke!
March 27th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
49 final fours combined, not to mention this final four has a little bit of everything. Pretty fucking awesome.
March 27th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
No one would think that 1970 Final Four pairing was a historical group of Final Four participants.
Hmm. Isn’t it more historically significant for the singularity of the participants? I agree, though, our children will learn about this Final Four in Basketball History classes for years to come
March 27th, 2012 at 2:51 PM
err might be 48, with 1 vacated for OSU.
March 27th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
It’s a great FF, but a lot of those “nine appearances” consist wins in tournaments played before WWII. I’m sorry, but I don’t count winning two games as a FF appearance the way its currently defined.
March 27th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
So, random question I’m coming to my like-minded internet friends to ask. So, I hit it off with this girl Saturday night, friend/roommate of a girl that works for me, but then both she and I (along with everybody we were with) ended up getting completely wasted and far too much so to remember to even get her number.
Anyways, my question is this, is it weird to email the girl to get this girls number? Trying to not be a creepy dude/creepy boss.
March 27th, 2012 at 2:54 PM
no.
March 27th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
Nope. Get them digitz, brah.
March 27th, 2012 at 2:57 PM
Anyways, my question is this, is it weird to email the girl to get this girls number? Trying to not be a creepy dude/creepy boss
If you guys are cool enough from work to hang out at a bar after work, it’s not weird if you ask for her friends number.
March 27th, 2012 at 2:59 PM
Do we want to account for the fact that between 1939 and 1960-something the NIT was more important than the NCAA tourney?
March 27th, 2012 at 2:59 PM
Arkansas sure has fell off the map.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:00 PM
lol for the penn state fans round these parts.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:01 PM
I don’t know if I would email. I might just ask her verbally, though.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:01 PM
Can someone fill me in about these Dana Jacobson rumors?
March 27th, 2012 at 3:03 PM
rumor has it that her ass contains 32% of the universe’s dark matter and that astronomers have been looking in the wrong places for decades.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:04 PM
The O’Brien meme is awesome. Didn’t quite get all of them, but I definitely laughed. The McGloin one is outstanding.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:04 PM
Anyways, my question is this, is it weird to email the girl to get this girls number? Trying to not be a creepy dude/creepy boss.
You went out, hit it off and are trying to follow that up. Nothing wrong with that. Better still if there’s anything that may derail this, the friend may let you know in advance.
Do it!
March 27th, 2012 at 3:05 PM
Dana Jacobson is a good anchor. Damn shame she had to work with Jay, Skip, Screamin’ A and Rob Parker all those years.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:05 PM
So I’m listening to the SCOTUS arguments from today and I’m totally enthralled. This shit is pretty badass, actually.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:06 PM
Ask her in person.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:06 PM
Get the digits — ok what is the highest possible return for this scenario:
I stand to win $350, unless one of two things happen:
1. Louisville beats OSU in the National Championship game
2. Louisville plays Kansas in the NC game, I lose regardless who would win
-I’m thinking I hedge Louisville by betting $100-$150 on Louisville +8.5 and hope that UK wins, but UL covers. If somehow Louisville would win and OSU would win — I would then hedge UL again with the points (assuming they would be dogs) and hope OSU won. Am I missing something from this plan?
March 27th, 2012 at 3:07 PM
Only one of those was actually funny. I want my thirty seconds back.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:08 PM
Anyways, my question is this, is it weird to email the girl to get this girls number? Trying to not be a creepy dude/creepy boss.
this isn’t creepy in a vacuum, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t creepy. Make sure to regale this chick with stories from the turkey processing plant, and if at all possible, do not mention that if you had to fuck a fat girl, you’d grudgingly pick Kate Upton.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
It’s a great FF, but a lot of those “nine appearances” consist wins in tournaments played before WWII. I’m sorry, but I don’t count winning two games as a FF appearance the way its currently defined.
Actually, if I limited it to 1950 and after, it would look better. None of Louisville’s are from that era. Kansas I think made their first in the 50′s. Kentucky won in 1949 and 1950. Ohio State made like a bunch in the late 50′s and early 60′s. Teams like Utah, Stanford, Wyoming, Wisconsin, Holy Cross won during that earliest era.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
So, you’re asking about the friend of a woman that works for you?
I’d say ask the employee for her friends information verbally. You might also get a scouting report as to whether or not you should pursue further, depending on your relationship.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
I was wondering if I wasn’t getting them for some reason…like there was some knowledge needed going into that link.
Guess not.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:10 PM
Not being picky, but this really through me off trying to read the first paragraph and figure out what you meant.
Also think you should have defined “historical”. I was thinking historically significant, as in extraordinary, not “oldest/most success”
March 27th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
bunch of negative nancy assholes up in here.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
The McGloin one was good.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
you don’t want a paper trail. just get the digits from the other girl, and then text the one you are interested in. don’t call.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
If the girl is into you, her friend at work will probably approach you about it. Women love setting up their friends more than drinking water when they’re thirsty.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
Link to a good recap? I’ve been meaning to follow but keep keep getting bogged down at work
March 27th, 2012 at 3:12 PM
Sure could be a great FF, which would be great after the tourney has been a little lacking in fantastic finishes.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:12 PM
If the girl is into you
T.E.’s into pegging
March 27th, 2012 at 3:12 PM
This is also very true.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:12 PM
/lights self on fire
March 27th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
Not that easy to ask in person, she technically works for me, but I honestly only see her rarely, like when we all go out once every couple weeks, or have tech sessions with shoe companies and such. Gracias on the input, fellas.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
Indeed.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
I just know this supposed baseball post is coming after 4
March 27th, 2012 at 3:14 PM
Obviously, this is the best advice of the lot.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:14 PM
Hey Buckner you are the running store guy right?
March 27th, 2012 at 3:15 PM
seriously, if paul mccartney died right this instant, id take the rest of the day off the celebrate.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:16 PM
That I am.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:16 PM
There are a ton of articles, but I wanted to hear it for myself. The solicitor general was pretty bad, but the plaintiff’s attorney wasn’t unscathed. Both Roberts and Kennedy went after him early on, actually, but he was good about tone in his arguments. He argued with ferver, that’s for sure.
But getting back to what you asked, it seems that most thought the SG got his ass handed to him and that the mandate part of the law may be overturned. I will say that Roberts seemed to be more in line with saying the mandate was in fact okay as the commerce was already in place. Either way it’s fascinating.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:17 PM
So “accidentally run into her” then.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:17 PM
You know anything about the new Vomero 7′s? Debating on just getting a deal on the older model or springing for the new ones. I love the 5′s and had so many that I didn’t go for the 6′s.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:18 PM
Buckner, you still running?
March 27th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
Do we want to account for the fact that between 1939 and 1960-something the NIT was more important than the NCAA tourney?
define we
March 27th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
oh shit, pkiguy just made me think of something-
BillyBuck, do you have absolutely any idea where I can get some Nike Air Zoom Haywards? Like the first version from 2006 that was discontinued after a year. Those were the best shoes by far that I ever wore, and I can’t find them anywhere. Fucking Nike.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:20 PM
The tournament was still 32 teams as late as 1978 though. It’s only been 64 about above for less than 30 years.
I’m not saying you’re wrong, it just raises the age-old question about how titles and achievements are valued. “Disingenuous” is probably too strong a word to describe tournaments/FF won before 1983, but maybe “less impressive” is accurate.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:20 PM

March 27th, 2012 at 3:20 PM
Just grab the older model, it’s mostly cosmetic changes to the new one, fits just the same.
Yeah, I took some time off, got rested up, and am building up the miles, gonna try to get fit over the summer, do some races. You?
March 27th, 2012 at 3:20 PM
This shit is pretty badass, actually.
very cool to hear the audio. i keep meaning to read some histories on the SC. like The Nine
March 27th, 2012 at 3:21 PM
Really depends on the girl and how well you hit it off. In general, I lean towards calling. You’re able to inflect tone and its more personal.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:22 PM
Am I missing something from this plan?
realism
March 27th, 2012 at 3:22 PM
You fast people make me sick.
Though I did get up to 30 miles last week, so I think I’m over a lot of my injuries. Once I get through the marathon in Pittsburgh, I’ll try to get a little faster.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:22 PM
Fellas… what do we think?
March 27th, 2012 at 3:22 PM
Honestly, I’m totally glued to it. It’s more entertaining and thought provoking than any podcast I’ve ever listened to. Ritty sent me a link to this site where I will now waste the next week of my life.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:22 PM
Women love setting up their friends more than drinking water when they’re thirsty.
but mostly the fat ones. The cute ones are rarely available (unless they’re crazy).
March 27th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
Always call. If she doesn’t like it, then she’s not the right girl anyway. Shit… if she’s that timid she can’t talk on the phone, she’ll suck in bed anyway.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
gross.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
Thanks dude. I really should just get a few pairs of the old ones anyway now that they are discounted and stop going for the flashier new ones.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
Well, that would be awkward as fuck since there’s not way I’d be in their neighborhood accidentally, but what the hell, why not? Honestly, the email way seems wisest, least creepy given the circumstances, but we’ll see, I’ll figure it out on my run.
No clue, really. I can check with our Nike Rep, she might have an idea, but it’s unlikely, it’s really tough to get a hold of older shoes, much less spikes. And I’m talking like 1-year old shoes, not 5 haha.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
Cool man. I took a bunch of time off during the wedding season I just had, and I’ve spent the last 6 weeks getting back into shape. Only running about 25 mpw right now, but it’s coming back. Doing some circuit weight work too, so I’m cutting off the little bit of doughiness that I built up during my time off. Might do some races next fall; thinking about running bandit in the Peachtree just to see what happens.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
Fellas… what do we think?
You never mix business with pleasure. That is the dumbest thing ever.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
Thanks Husker, legal issues like this have fascinated me too. So if the mandate is struck down; does that overturn the entire ACA or can it survive without? Can the administration alter the mandate or is that it?
March 27th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
while I’m big on tonality, I think the text is the best thing ever to happen to guys when it comes to communication with women.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
It needs to be boneless. Otherwise you have to take it apart to eat it. Maybe shred some chicken or bury a boneless wing in the actual cupcake? Plus then you have the added pleasure of seeing someone eat it expecting a vanilla cupcake, and trying not to vomit.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
The mandate is by itself, I believe, however I would assume that would change the game in a big way. I’m not totally sure, though.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:26 PM
This should absolutely not split down party lines, as many of the conservative justices have supported congressional commerce authority like this in the past. But what are the odds its 5-4 with all the conservatives voting against it? 80 percent? 90?
The fact that nine old people get to decide how the country runs is a disaster in the current political climate.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:26 PM

March 27th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
Yeah, I’m just gonna email the girl I know and get the number and call her, seems most normal, especially since we’ve exchanged emails before about drinking tales.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
Damn. Just for the record, I am talking about the trainers though… these guys right here:
http://ic2.pbase.com/g3/08/711908/2/101064129.1ph6hL7d.jpg
If you happen to talk to your Nike rep, that would be awesome. Just catch me on here one night if you find anything out… although you might have my email still, not sure.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
never call. I highly recommend that approach.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
That’s the stupidest thing i have ever seen.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:28 PM
Yeah, I took some time off, got rested up, did some time, and am building up the miles, gonna try to get fit over the summer, do some races.
we remember
March 27th, 2012 at 3:28 PM
nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
March 27th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
I’ll shoot her an email this afternoon, I’ll let you know what I found out. I was honestly thinking spikes, haha.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
It can survive without the mandate — in fact, many political scientists are claiming that it’s better for Obama to have it struck down so he can pass the popular individual provisions piecemeal — but its my understanding that the mandate is the crux of the entire plan. Without everyone buying in the premiums stay high and we can’t pool for better rates.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
I guess this is slightly different, since it’d be calling a number the girl didn’t know he had. Could always go the passive route and give the friend your number and hope the other girl calls.
I’m voting email. Can say you had fun would like to see her again, don’t even have to ask for the number. If she is interested, the number will find its way back to you.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
Finished a marathon this weekend…didn’t do any training either.
/jogged the last half-mile with my wife while pushing the kid in the jogger
//I keep interjecting to correct her that “we” finished a marathon
///she probably hates me
March 27th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
So true. Everything has become so damn partisan, that you know it will fall on party lines. 5-4 votes always suck.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
Nice man, let me know how the races go. I have raced a lot in ages, it’s taken a few weeks to get back, I’m just getting into the 50s now, but I’m doing a really slow build, dropping a bunch of weight with my thyroid meds being right for the first time in years.
And banditing is the best. I remember banditing a local 5K one summer, just for a tempo, ended up being in the lead, getting within like 20 years of the finish line and turning down a sidestreet. So akward, the announcer was such a dick, too.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
Thanks man, I appreciate it.
I’m desperate for a few pairs of these things, but I fear they simply do not exist in usable form anymore.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
the fact that you dumb down how the country runs to perceived party-based decisions by nine old people is a disaster.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:34 PM
Now this might be the winner, I like this one a lot. Especially since I can avoid her pretty easily if that fails. I’ll decide on my run, I make just about all my remotely important decisions on my runs.
Can’t disagree with that, I have at least a chance of being witty in a text.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:35 PM

March 27th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
Definitely man, no problem.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:38 PM
exactly!
March 27th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
Whatever route you go BB, just do it with confidence. Don’t treat the method of getting in touch with her as a big deal and unless she is a psycho neither will she.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:41 PM
March 27th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
quote fail.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
Yeah, I’m not freaked about it, I just rarely ask girls out, I just hook up with girls for a very short period and then stop. I think I’ve grown bored.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:43 PM
You know, they made the same argument in pushing for mandatory auto insurance back in the 1980s. Have auto premiums come down in the age of mandatory insurance?
March 27th, 2012 at 3:47 PM
Yeah, it’s kinda fun, people just get so confused. Though now, if you catch the right road race, I can win money, which is a nice bonus.
And thanks, I hope it keeps going well do. Same to you. Hopefully this summer is brutally fucking hot and muggy, but I’m guessing it will be.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
Its slightly different because not everyone drives. Premiums will never come down. They’ll only slow in growth.
March 27th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
Without a cap on premiums somehow, this so-called “reform” is doomed to failure. For the consumers and taxpayers, at least. It will be a gravy train for the insurance companies. With a captive market, they can charge whatever they want.
