Five College Football Quarterback Battles to Monitor For 2012
Our collective seasonal foray into college basketball is cute, but soon we will return to college football’s comforting though slightly unnerving embrace. Here are five quarterback battles to monitor as we progress through the spring.
Texas: Texas could be Texas again quite quickly. The Longhorns have a soft schedule, returning coordinators, a top-tier defense and experienced depth on the offensive line and at the skill positions. They just need a quarterback. David Ash seems the best bet, though the “best bet” being a true sophomore who had a 4/8 touchdown to INT ratio last year is worrisome. Pedigreed junior Case McCoy will breathe down his neck, as well four-star early enrollee Connor Brewer. None of these guys looks like the next Vince or Colt, but if one can be solid, the Longhorns are loaded to make a run.
Notre Dame: Tommy Rees has spunk, but also has a dearth of elite skills and a penchant for careless throws. With the talent behind him, it is probably a question when not if he loses his job. Andrew Hendrix has better tools and could step forward in his third year. Everett Golson may be the most capable athletically to run Kelly’s offense, though has yet to take a competitive snap. There is also that Gunner Kiel kid who was the top-rated quarterback in the country and enrolled early. The Irish don’t need better quarterback play to make the leap. They will need it just to stay afloat. Road games at Michigan State, at Oklahoma and at USC leave them will be tough. They also play Michigan, Stanford, Miami and BYU. Notre Dame could improve and finish 8-5.
Florida: The Gators 2012 offense may resemble 2011 and 2010, a fruitless search to find Tim Tebow’s replacement. Florida has two Top 100 quarterback recruits from 2011 in Jeff Driskel and Jacoby Brissett. Though neither impressed when Charlie Weis sent out as decided sacrificial lambs last season and neither has distinguished himself in the spring, opening the door for redshirt sophomore Tyler Murphy to make a case for himself. Muschamp has 10 starters back on defense and returns most of the offensive line. If new coordinator Brent Pease can coax any production from the skill positions, Florida is not that far off in the SEC East.
Stanford: The Cardinal will drop next season, but to maintain their positive momentum they can’t drop precipitously. Much of that pressure will fall on Andrew Luck’s replacement. Shaw has two 6’4,” pro-style, former recruits in junior Josh Nunes and redshirt sophomore Brett Nottingham who are the frontrunners, though the two have just 10 career passing attempts combined. Both could be competent and be buttressed by a tough, physical team, though neither will have much time to settle. The Cardinal play USC on Sept. 15 and play The Big Game and at South Bend before Halloween.
Auburn: Chizik’s support remains strong, though another rough start after an Alabama title would be unwise. New offensive coordinator Scott Loeffler was a longtime quarterbacks coach at Michigan, has sent a number of quarterbacks to the NFL. He will have options at Auburn, though none of them proven. Clint Moseley put okay numbers after taking over at midseason in 2011 (besides the 17 sacks in 125 drop backs). Former top 100 recruit Kiehl Frazier has promise but has only seen legit action as a runner and may not fit the new offense. Auburn also has spring enrollee Zeke Pike. Whoever the choice is will have to make due without Michael Dyer and with two new offensive tackles. He also must be prepared immediately. Three of their first five are against Clemson, LSU and Arkansas.

Robinson VS Gardner?
March 27th, 2012 at 4:09 PM
The title to the post makes me envision a bank of TVs just showing these guys playing football and me being forced to watch until somebody wins each competition

Fuck yes.

Texas could be Texas again quite quickly.
Cue the Mack Brown choke job.

texas has basically the same team as last year, and the same crappy set of qbs. i think 7-6 or 8-5 is about right.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:12 PM
Watching Florida’s shit show at QB will be high comedy this year. Luckily for them they’ll have a beastly defense, because they’ll need one. As for Auburn, Frazier has to be the guy, even if he can’t throw it all that well right now. He has 6 months to get better in that area, though. Mosely is only taking them so far (7-5), whereas at least Frazier can get them an extra win or two.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:13 PM
I’d be happy seeing Andrew Hendrix get a bunch of snaps along with a sprinkling of Everett Golson. Rees cannot stop losing the ball.
In fact, he just dropped his books and everyone laughed like Nelson.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:13 PM
Schedule is much better though, as OKST and Baylor will drop off big time and Mizzou is gone.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:14 PM
Uhhhh….no.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:14 PM
I would guess Hendrix will be the guy to lead Notre Dame to a thrilling 8-4 campaign.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:14 PM
Auburn…if it means anything, Frazier has been getting snaps with the starting center in the first couple of spring practices. As far as fitting the offense goes…he’s gonna be handing the ball off a lot, so I really can’t imagine that’s going to be too much of a problem. We’ve got an All-America fullback transfer from Illinois who should be cleared to play in the fall, and, though a young group, an offensive line full of potential studs. I think 8 regular season wins is a stretch, but I am confident in two things – there will be no dropoff in running game production without Dyer and Chizik will not be on the hotseat any time soon.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:14 PM
ND just picked up Malik Zaire.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:16 PM
Awwbarn is gonna be in rough shape. ROUGH
March 27th, 2012 at 4:16 PM
Ehh….UGA and SoCar are well ahead of them for this year. 2013 is different, but 2012 is all about those two teams with Miz, Tenn and Fla battling it out for 3rd.
1) UGA will whoop that ass again
2) So will Bama, LSU and ARK.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:17 PM
Toughest schedule in the country, no? That looks brutal.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:17 PM
BTW no mention of LSU? With the 2-headed monster out, the QB job is once again up for grabs. Doubt Miles will want to waste another good defense with shoddy QB play.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:18 PM
all over him since he’s at ND I’d wager.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:18 PM
Schedule is much better though, as OKST and Baylor will drop off big time and Mizzou is gone.
thats why i gave them a few more wins.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
As usual, they probably mixed in a few NAIA teams.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
Jesus.
Huh? Mettenberger is their starter. Not even close to a competition.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
Well as Duffy mentioned, at Michigan State, at Oklahoma, USC under the lights in LA. Plus Michigan, Stanford, Miami & BYU.
Yup, 8 wins sounds right.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
Georgia almost lost to Florida last year…
March 27th, 2012 at 4:20 PM
Speaking of which, I saw the trailer for the new American Pie this weekend, and it does not look flattering. At least Chris Klein is still alive.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:21 PM
Pedigreed junior Case McCoy
Pedigreed as in “dog” or “horse”?
I dunno about the Texas QB situation. The names may be familiar, but that doesn’t promise improvement. It may be “some change, no change” from last year to this.
/Calculated X’d
March 27th, 2012 at 4:21 PM
And actually, this may not entirely be the case. Chad Slade, who started mostly at guard but played some right tackle, could win out a tackle job and make room for Greg Robinson at the other spot and Chad Westerman at a guard spot.
Last year we only won one game we probably should not have – South Carolina. This year I think we win two games we aren’t favored in. Assuming we don’t have a Utah State like meltdown, I think we could be one of the top surprises in the nation. But nobody is going to touch us because of the new coordinators.
Nice post, Duffy. I just renewed my season tickets today as well. Great day.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:21 PM
They gave up like 30 yards after halftime and went into the victory formation at the one-yard line.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:22 PM
Michigan’s already picked up a few Ohio kids as well.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:22 PM
Non of these games were close last year. I think at least 2 of them are at least close this year.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
So you think you’re going to beat either UGA, Bama, LSU or ARK? Plus you have Clemson in the Dome at road games at Miss St and Vandy. Keep in mind the average score in the four losses to UGA, Bama, Ark and LSU was something like 40-13.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:24 PM
Ash has the Texas job. He’s been running first team all spring.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:25 PM
Hendrix. Dear God let it be Hendrix.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:26 PM
The most exciting thing to watch in the B12 this year should be the Texas running game. Malcolm Brown and Jonathan (?) Gray should run all over the shitty B12 defenses. If Ash is even remotely competent, Texas should win 9 games.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:26 PM
I think we will beat Miss State and Vandy. I am assuming that. If we lose one of those, then it’s going to be next to impossible to keep up to the standards I’m commenting about. I see a 7 win season and possibly 8 which would at least require a win over Clemson. We hung with them for a while last year and we usually play well in Atlanta. Also, I’m not scared of Georgia. Not saying we win, but I ain’t scared.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:27 PM
Check that. It was 42-11. Wow.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:28 PM
And for anyone that cares, I was at the Texas Tech spring game. I don’t think they’re going to scare anyone this year. Might win one more than last season so an Alamo Bowl postseason should probably be their maximum goal. Doege is gonna be the starter but Michael Brewer turned some heads.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:28 PM
Don’t forget LSU, where the QB position will feature the battle of Le Chapeau vs. the Forward Pass.
Also, the Hatter vs. Offensive Game Planning.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:28 PM
some day he will be top 5 like Garret Gilbert.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:28 PM
Great news.
/OU fans everywhere
March 27th, 2012 at 4:29 PM
Good to hear. It’ll make the 38-13 ass whipping taste that much better come November, because UGA will be a much better team in 2012 than they were in 2011. Even if Auburn jumps at a level equal to UGA’s jump, it’s still a big difference in talent.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:29 PM
Ouch. I still have nightmares about the first 10 minutes of the second half in Baton Rouge. I was pretty dejected until we got back to New Orleans at 11:30, right when Texas Tech was beating OU after a long rain delay. Watched that game in that Irish Pub off Bourbon, then proceeded to get hammer time. Oh happy days are the fall Saturdays, even in defeat.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:30 PM
Talent? I don’t think so. Experience…yes. But I think this Auburn team is going to develop some serious talent in the next two years. We’re still very young.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:31 PM
That kid is gonna be a monster.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:31 PM
It always blows my mind when Texas has a shitty QB crop. I just don’t get how that happens. I mean, if NEB has shitty QBs, it’s not all that shocking as it’s not like there are 20 decent HS QBs hanging out within 300 miles of them. As I said on Twitter, Mack Brown is a USC 4th and 2 conversion from being the biggest waste of talent in college football history.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:32 PM
UGA could have 9-10 players on their defense drafted after next season. Seriously.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:33 PM
My first reaction to “Giants host Cowboys to open 2012 season” was: I thought the Superbowl champions always opened the season.
Good news… I’m in complete denial and/or experiencing traumatic amnesia.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:34 PM
The sad thing about LSU is, the team overall might be better this season than in 2011, and Les might still find a way to fuck it up. And I keep hearing from Georgia fans that Mettenberger ain’t all that great.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:35 PM
Did you just Google “Florida, Quarterbacks” and throw the first piece of info you found up?
March 27th, 2012 at 4:36 PM
Weird that Notre Dame is listed here given that they are a basketball school.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:36 PM
He’s good, but he’s not Stafford, which is what LSU fans seem to think he is. He has a cannon for an arm, but (and this was as a freshman, so it has most likely changed) he thinks he has get the ball through any window, no matter how small. If he plays with intelligence and uses the insane running game LSU will have, LSU should win the title this year.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:36 PM
The hell are yoy talking about? There is NO WAY that the QB situation can go ANYWHERE but up after the last two years.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:38 PM
If people bitched about the SEC being top heavy last year, get ready for it to be a bear this year. LSU, Bama, UGA, ARK and SoCar are all legit top-10 teams next year. Tenn could have the best offense while Florida could have the best defense and Vandy will actually be competent this year. That’s not even counting the newcomers, either. The SEC is going to be stupid good in 2012.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:39 PM
Keep telling yourself that. UGA nd South Carolina beat the worst Florida team in 20 years by a combined 6 points last year…but sure, light years ahead.
You’re in for a really disappointing season if that’s your frame of thought…
March 27th, 2012 at 4:39 PM
So it goes from holocaust-esque bad to My Lai bad. Either way it’s still a total clusterfuck.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:40 PM
My major fear is this: Les cannot coach up a QB. Maybe Kragthorpe can help if he’s back to full time this season, but both Jefferson and Lee regressed in the second half last season, and that’s not a good sign.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:41 PM
Again, UGA went to a knee on the one yard line last year. Would you be more realistic had they pulled a Spurrier and scored to go up 31-20?
March 27th, 2012 at 4:41 PM
I think UGA goes 11-2 (loss to SC and LSU in the SEC title game).
March 27th, 2012 at 4:42 PM
I have a feeling that the Hogs will be the wild card again. They always scare me.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:43 PM
If their RB comes back fully healthy, they could be super scary. Petrino is a total asshat, but he can draw up an offense with the best of them.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:44 PM
Florida returned a KO for a touchdown and had 30 yards in the second half, all while UGA pumped the brakes at the 1-yard line, yet Trey is all, “but it was so close!!” Fucking hilarious.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:44 PM
I’ll believe it when I see it.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:45 PM
I think that passing attack could be SCARY. Like…super fucking scary.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:46 PM
well that makes 2 posts in a row I fucking missed.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:46 PM
And ya needed a 4th quarter TD to take the lead. Congrats on just totally blowing us out. You guys are just so far ahead of us that we’ll probably just cancel the 2012 version of the game.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:47 PM
I just can’t get as excited about everyone for the upcoming CFB season when you know it will just be an exhibition and a gauge for how 2013 will go.
/Canes fan
March 27th, 2012 at 4:48 PM
I mean..if that’s how you feel that’s cool. Me? I’d rather see UGA beat them again on CBS on the back of #SoCrow and that sick-nasty UGA defense.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:48 PM
Whoever gets the UT QB job is just keeping the seat warm until Tyrone Swoopes, a/k/a the next Vince Young, arrives on campus.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:48 PM
I hope you’re right, GOTG. I’m jaded though. give me about 4 months and I’ll have myself convinced Tennessee is winning the East this year.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:49 PM
You were facing a quarterback who was playing on one leg…while out backup was out after getting knocked out vs. Auburn. Congrats though on beating us by 4 points.
Georgia is so awesome they’ve done nothing nationally relevant in 30-some-odd years.
Godspeed.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:49 PM
It always blows my mind when Texas has a shitty QB crop.
no shit. i am excited to see how gray will do. he was an absolute badass in HS. If ut can generate even a little passing to keep d’s honest, they could be really good in a few years.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:51 PM
Thanks.
I know nothing about their OL or the RBs. All I know is Bray is a stud and the three WRs they’re going to trot out are going to be almost impossible to defend. Other than SoCar and Florida, the Tenn game scares me the most.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:53 PM
I think we’ve seen this a million times now. Georgia beats Florida, their fan base throws their chest out like they just won the gee dee national championship, keep talking about how the tide has turned, only to be hit with that cold slap of reality the next year.
You can tell me “oh, it’s a new story” all you want, doesn’t make it true. In fact, the last time you beat us, I do believe we made sure you felt the pentration the next three years.
But I applaud your confidence and off belief that Florida, a school that has not only owned UGA, but wins National Championships is done. We’re not going to be a power this year, but we’ll be good enough to beat Georgia.
Tell though. How much better is the Georgia team that took their first lead in the fourth quarter against a TERRIBLE Florida team that went 7-6.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:55 PM
supposedly Knile ran a 4.4 40 at the first spring practice. I know 40 times mean shit, but that is faster than he was last year before he wrecked his knee. Him coming back healthy is going to be huge in helping the WR corps develop.
Alabama and LSU in Fayetteville this year? so sweet.
March 27th, 2012 at 4:56 PM
Much better. Better RBs, better WRs, better QB and a much better D. Look, the Florida game is always going to be tough for UGA because of the mental edge Florida has. But a bit of that edge (a good bit) left with Meyer. That’s just the truth of the matter, whether you want to admit that or not. UGA, for the first time in a long time, is better at QB, RB, WR, DL, LB and S. OL may go to FLA, but that’s up in the air.
March 27th, 2012 at 5:02 PM
You forgot Conner Preston and Garret Gilbert at SMU.
/9 wins next season.
March 27th, 2012 at 5:04 PM
March 27th, 2012 at 5:05 PM
QB and RB. That’s it lawya.
Our defense is so much better than yours it’s not even funny…but you’re right a lot of good defenses give up 400 yards to Big Ten teams.
Florida’s defense is going to be insane this year. Just look what we did to FSU when healthy…Look at what we did the last few games of the year.
March 27th, 2012 at 5:07 PM
Alabama has to go down this year. It has to happen.
March 27th, 2012 at 5:08 PM
You forgot Conner Preston and Garret “Top 5″ Gilbert at SMU.
First four star guy who will actually suit up for us in quite some time.
Word is that he will be much more comfortable in a pass first offense. And Preston passed to a five star and a four star receiving recruit on his high school team in California while they were en route to a state championship. So we actually have an honest to God QB battle instead of picking from among retreads. This is new for us.
March 27th, 2012 at 5:15 PM
“First four star guy who will actually suit up for us in quite some time.”
Doesn’t Gilbert have to sit out a year? I seem to recall him sucking this past year in addition to the prior year. In any event, don’t get too excited. The guy sucks. He only appears to be comfortable in an INT-first offense.
March 27th, 2012 at 5:19 PM
for real. I’m interested too see what the defense looks like this year with the new staff. It will be so nice to have a reliable running game to offset the passing game.
March 27th, 2012 at 5:32 PM
Doesn’t Gilbert have to sit out a year? I seem to recall him sucking this past year in addition to the prior year. In any event, don’t get too excited. The guy sucks. He only appears to be comfortable in an INT-first offense.
He’s graduating from Texas this spring, and has two years of immediate graduate eligibility. A player can transfer and play for another school as a grad student if they can be in a grad program that can be demonstrated to not be available at their original institution.
If Gilbert sucks, then we have a 3 star from California to replace him. My point was that it’s nice to have that rather than some two stars and a transfer fighting it out for the position, which has been the case for four straight years.
March 27th, 2012 at 5:34 PM
IfGilbert sucks, hate to rain on your parade
March 27th, 2012 at 5:57 PM
It always blows my mind when Texas has a shitty QB crop. I just don’t get how that happens.
Really? It’s happened once in the last 15 years – the two UT has now.
The last 3 full-time starters were/are NFL QBs.
March 27th, 2012 at 6:13 PM
hate to rain on your parade
Read the rest of the paragraph.
You guys don’t get what it’s like to be an SMU fan. We’ve gone 1-11, 8-5, 7-7, 8-5 under June. Every one of those four seasons was fueled by either a two star QB who was boosted by his surroundings at a Texas high school or was a transfer from a Hal Mumme Offense (that specifically refers to J.J. McDermott who was QB most of last season and produced this wonderful line: 3,421 yards, 59.8% completion, 17 TD, 16 INT.
Before June, we hadn’t won 6 games since 1984. So you guys don’t really get how much of an improvement this is for us. If we can have a similar defense to 2011, then 9-10 wins on our schedule is not out of the question.
March 27th, 2012 at 7:25 PM
UGA football gets my usual wanking motion. Just know that you’re only being taken seriously because Florida is down.
Auburn wins 9, including over UGA.
March 27th, 2012 at 7:49 PM
And I don’t get this clueless “Gene Chizik is on the hot seat two years after winning the national title” nonsense.
Auburn has never recruited better, and is off to a good start this offseason in that department.
There were issues with the coaching staff that were properly addressed.
Chizik runs a tight ship. He’s willing to say bye-bye to a potential All-American running back.
He’s liked by basically everyone I talk to on campus.
And people are going to revolt because the team is in an obvious rebuilding situation following Tubby leaving the cupboard bare?
No. Please. The situation talent-wise was worse than what RichRod had at Michigan, and RichRod had all sorts of problems, and it still took three seasons for Michigan people who never accepted RichRod to run him off. And you think Auburn could run Chizik off if, in a rebuilding year, his team wins eight games?
March 27th, 2012 at 11:49 PM
I’m sad I missed this. INT-first offense is really funny
