Mad Men Premiere: A Little Kiss and a Mountain of Internal Unrest
Mad Men returned last night after its 17-month hiatus. There were a few nervy, ham-fisted moments, though ultimately, we saw enough to remind us that, yes, this show really is that damn good. The show exhibited its strong points: impeccable set design, viscous sexual tension and adroitly presenting external changes that shaped our present through the characters’ internal discord.
Using a song slightly predating the show’s timeline, this double episode was about “Satisfaction,” or the scarcity of it, with characters realizing their perceived measures of success but finding them unfulfilling. Both Don and Megan, riding a cresting wave of infatuation, believe they’ve found the perfect relationship, only for the “Zou Bisou Bisou” performance at the party to emphasize how little they have truly connected.
Peggy attains Don’s career success, leading writers and making pitches to major clients, only to have her idealism flattened by serving said clients. Pete reaches Don’s material success with the wife, the children and the suburban household, only to absorb the associated pressures that crushed him. Lane gets his family back and his longing for an escape only intensifies. Joan fulfills her biological purpose, but feels acutely the absence of one. Interspersing it all you have Roger , bulldozing his way through immense internal strifes – the loss of his professional prestige, his second marriage devolving into a facsimile of the first, and seeing his child for the first time – with a mixture of alcohol and sardonic wit.
The characters’ conflicts embody 1966, a time of simmering discontentment and cynicism. The early decade optimism culminated in the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Its failure to change society veritably inflamed by a controversial war created a volcano of resentment that would erupt and radically alter American (and Western) society.
The Civil Rights consensus would splinter into Black Power, urban riots and a white backlash. Student manifestos and grass roots activism would devolve into the Weathermen and violent anti-war protests. Freeing your mind with pot and LSD would become hiding from it with heroin and cocaine.
No scene quite captures the convoluted times like the final one. The characters, while grasping the importance of lip service to racial equality, must confront it. Black applicants, while pushing hard against social segregation based on race accept segregation based on gender when told the company is only looking for secretaries as entirely natural. We’re used to Mad Men addressing issues subtly, though the tumult to come in the late 1960s was anything but subtle.

Needs more dancing gifs.

This gonna be a weekly thing? If so, awesome
The guy who plays Pryce is just so delightfully creepy, I’m sure he’ll happily interview the black applicants personally on his couch even if he knows they’re not hiring anyone
Not sure there’s a decent character left on this show other than maybe Ken Cosgrove accounts but that’s just because we don’t know much about him
March 26th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
How exactly does one measure the viscosity of sexual tension?
March 26th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
That Lane storyline was a little weird. I also can’t tell if he is broke or something because money seemed to be a recurring theme with him.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:04 AM
This may sounds weird, but I think Sally Draper is awesome.
It’s such a well made show — every character is interesting.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:04 AM
I’m sure he will with his hunger for the chocolate bunnies.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:04 AM
Jane: “What time is it?”
Roger: “Shut up.”
Never change Mr Sterling.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:04 AM
question…do i need to catch up on the previous seasons to enjoy this one?
March 26th, 2012 at 11:05 AM
Not a dunk.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
I would.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
I’ll be back for the next post.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
It would help since most of the characters have backstories with the others that give different slants to scenes…like Peggy and Pete talking about who should take baby was especially loaded since that could have been their life
March 26th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
I love that you push this meme.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
I forget Roger’s line here, but it was a great mix of awesome and awkward.
Oh, and Pete Campbell’s plaid jacket was just awful. For that reason alone, I hope Campbell gets put in his place.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
Anyone else not remember about Betty until about halfway through and then still not really care?
March 26th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
fack…i haven’t made it out of season one yet.
there’s seriously too much good stuff on tv to keep up with it all.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
I wasn’t feeling the Joan storyline at all
March 26th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
“I didn’t know you were serving drinks? We should get you a pair of roller skates.”
Roger/Pete rivalry is awesome.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
Or the close of up the grundle of an infant child
March 26th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
question…do i need to catch up on the previous seasons to enjoy this one?
just like you had to have once had an Enchirito to truly enjoy a taco made with a shell of Doritos.
Or if you just walked in out of nowhere on Sopranos, and couldn’t figure out why two of the “captains” were nothing but cartoon characterizations of mafiosos.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
Her character has a lot of potential to drive Betty and Don insane as she comes of age during the late ’60′s. Matthew Weiner’s gotta have a Woodstock hook in this show eventually, right?
March 26th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
I didn’t realize she wasn’t in the episode until I read Sepinwall’s recap this morning, guess her scenes will be fewer this year because they had to work around her birthing a bastard…kinda sad how they made her a monster since it again lets Draper off the hook for being a piece of shit
March 26th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
last night was awesome. looks like there will be alot going on this season.
one thing i missed- was pete trying to take roger’s clients, or just pointing out he hasnt done crap in a while?
March 26th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
I enjoyed the shot that Don took at Betty and Henry when he dropped the kids off, by referring to them as Morticia and Lerch.
/not good parenting, but still funny
March 26th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
just pointing out he hasnt done crap in a while?
This. Roger will have to do something here this season to help the company. I am thinking he will be on to something and then fuck it up in the end.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
Sterling was trying to steal Pete’s clients which is why he was weaseling his way into those meetings…since Lucky Strike he’s irrelevant there but unlike Bert Cooper hasn’t accepted it
March 26th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
I disagree. I think their connection was way further progressed than I ever thought it would be. Megan is the only person in Don’s life that pushes Don out of his comfort zone. And ever opinionated Don only holds back his opinions from Megan because he wants her to be happy.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
Roger on Pete again: “Just fold him up and slide him under the door when you’re done with him.”
So hilariously condescending.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
She may be the least sympathetic wife of a philanderer this side of Livia Soprano.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
Again, carrying over from the other thread, Pete Campbell is the voice of reason in that office and probably the most indispensable member of the firm outside of Don.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
Matthew Weiner’s gotta have a Woodstock hook in this show eventually, right?
I was waiting for Sterling to be in blackface at the end of the episode.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:13 AM
I keep telling myself that I’m going to watch this show. Just never get around to it…
March 26th, 2012 at 11:13 AM
It would suck if they write the Roger character off that show.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:13 AM
I like the fact that Don seems to be very open about his past with Megan. I think they are going to try and make Don the good guy for about 5 episodes before he goes back to his old ways.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:14 AM
She may be the least sympathetic wife of a philanderer this side of Livia Soprano.
Cersei Lannister is the winner there.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:14 AM
I keep telling myself that I’m going to watch this show. Just never get around to it…
I’ve owned season 1 on DVD for 18 months. It’s still in cellophane.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
or vanessa bryant.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
Ugh. I fucking hate Pete Campbell. He was less of a shit head last season but he’s back to his old whiny antics again. I honestly have no idea how that guy manages to land any business at all.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
I agree with this. As viewers, we’ve already lived through that whole identity story line. I’m glad they are evolving things with Draper’s character.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:16 AM
He’s not a lazy drunk like Sterling and puts in the work
March 26th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
I love that Lane Price was the tabloid producer in Mr. Deeds
March 26th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
March 26th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
Now I know how all of the non-Lost fans felt when a recap post went up.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
He may not be lazy but sales isn’t just about working hard. It’s also about people liking you. I don’t know how anyone could sit down at a table with Pete Campbell, listen to his pitch and think he’d be someone you’d give your business to.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
He’s the only one going after business. A worthless drunk is spying on his calendar and showing up at his meetings uninvited. All the partners — sans Lane — are working three hour days. He’s the head of accounts and has the office of a secretary.
Pete’s annoying, but he’s also right.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
that’s good.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
I watched season 1 of this show and liked it, but I finally had to give up. Just couldn’t get over the title.
Mad Men? WTF? They seem happy enough to me. And what about the women?
March 26th, 2012 at 11:22 AM
He has his whiny persona in private and his professional one where it’s all courtesy and manners, guessing that’s enough if he’s selling good ideas…the clients don’t see him bitch about his office
March 26th, 2012 at 11:22 AM
Pete is his own worst enemy. If he wasn’t such a whiny douche, he’d get the office he wanted! It’s because he constantly complains and is an all-around dick wad that he isn’t getting the respect he thinks he deserves. It’s the same reason why Roger keeps showing up to all of Pete’s appointments. He knows he’s getting under that little fuck’s skin so he keeps doing it.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:23 AM
“You have to be the stupidest motherfucker I’ve ever gone out with Darnell.”
“I cant wait to go to jail”
March 26th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
I love Sally. The girl that plays her is so cute!! She will be trouble for both sets of parents. Speaking of Lane, they were showing “Lost in Space” yesterday morning on either TBS or TNT. When it got to the grown up Will Robinson, I kept thinking this guy looks familiar. It was Jared Harris.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
No way, who’s forcing Sterling out of that office? Don? Pryce? He’s whiny since his work goes unappreciated
Can’t believe I’ve been moved to defend Pete Campbell but if it were just up to Draper and Sterling to keep that place afloat they’d be out of business
March 26th, 2012 at 11:26 AM
I dont really agree with any of this, but I’m guessing I’m not going to change your mind.
It’s been seven months since the last season wrapped. So that’s seven months of Pete busting his ass while everyone else — the fucking partners, none the less — dicks off. Seven months of Pete trying to bring clients into a broom closet office. Seven months of keeping the business afloat as a junior partner. Seven months of a dumbass secretary (redundant, I know).
He’s not getting the respect he deserves, and he’s pissed about it. I don’t know how that makes him a dick.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:26 AM
Jessica Pare dominates this post.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:26 AM
Anytime you watch someone demand respect (especially the way the Campbell character does it) it can be painful to watch.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:28 AM
i still cant get over how people in that era drank when they worked. i would never get anything done if that was the norm now.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
I’m worried that Roger is going to become a caricature of himself and become the forced comic relief as he becomes less relevant for the firm.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
Dicking off online is the new workday drinking.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
I think it’s the first thing that they explain. I only know this because I just watched the first episode. It’s the nickname that those advertising guys coined for themselves back then working on Madison Avenue.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:31 AM
I hope this is sarcasm or an attempt at a bad joke.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
the chauvenistic comments are funny because it is so accepted.
Loved when peggy asked pete to look after joan’s kid, and pete responded with “Didnt know I had a skirt on”
March 26th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
I just realized that I’m an idiot. Pretty sure this is actually a good joke, making fun of TBL.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
I hope this is sarcasm or an attempt at a bad joke.
Rememebr when TBL said Game of Thrones sounded stupid because it had a dumb title? I think (or hope) that is what he was getting at.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
I’m worried that Roger is going to become a caricature of himself and become the forced comic relief as he becomes less relevant for the firm.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
Maybe. Lots of good story potential, though, with his fucked up marriage and the kid he has with Joan. If Greg Harris doesn’t make it back from Vietnam, things could get very interesting.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
I agree. He was close to becoming that in last night’s episode.
I believe this was a poor attempt at making TBL’s “Game of Thrones” bad title joke.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
the company doesn’t have much money, and he is in charge of the financials
March 26th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
Rusty wins this round
March 26th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
It’s been seven months since the last season wrapped.
I missed the first 5 minutes and jumped in — I’m not doubting this to be true, how did you come to this?
March 26th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
Not sure if it could be derived from the episode but Matt Weiner said as much in an interview (actually closer to 9 months)
March 26th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
The last season ended in October, and there was a reference to Memorial Day, which would be May 1966.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
Cool — thanks, I wasnt sure what the time lapsed was.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
It will never not be awesome.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
Sterling delivered tons of one-liners and antics last night that had me laughing out loud.
Pete’s reaction after faceplanting on that pillar was hilarious.
March 26th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
Pete’s pissed off face before he trips is also funny.
March 26th, 2012 at 2:00 PM
I think he said “There’s my baby!” and then walked straight past the baby to Joan.
