Jim Leyland’s Smoking Habit Now Being Celebrated on T-shirts
A bar in downtown Detroit is selling t-shirts to honor the furiously smoking chimney that is Tigers manager, Jim Leyland.
Even if you happen to despise the Tigers, it’s probably rather difficult not to enjoy the disarming likeness of Leyland, or Leyland himself for that matter. Is there a cooler, more likable manager in all of baseball? Ozzie Guillen is an endlessly entertaining character, but half the time it’s for being a stupendous jackass. Jimmy’s simply a down to earth fellow who sincerely tells it like it is while sprinkling in a nice helping of dry humor, like how he didn’t take up smoking until he worked for Tony La Russa in the early 80s.
It’ll certainly be a sad day for baseball when Leyland finally decides to call it quits.

Leyland is awesome. Now post a link to that video of him chewing out Barry Bonds at spring training, and he’ll be even more awesome.

An oldie but goodie:
As Leyland travels to Detroit to interview for the just-opened Detroit Tigers job, we’d like to hark back to our personal favorite Jim Leyland moment.
He was being interviewed by then-ESPNer Chris Myers, who was asking him about his well-publicized tendency to smoke cigarettes in the dugout. Leyland paused for a moment, put his head down and delivered the obligatory platitudes about how bad smoking is for you, how children should avoid smoking, how he knows it’s unhealthy. Then he looked directly into the camera, his eyes very wide, and said, “Still. Smokers out there, you know what I’m talking about. That moment, after you’ve had a huge meal, say at Thanksgiving, when you step outside in the cold, light up a cigarette and take a deep inhale … that’s about the best moment in the world, you know? All the smokers out there, you know that feeling. Sometimes, smoking is fantastic.” Myers quickly cut to commercial, and Leyland has never been on the show since.
We really hope he gets the job.

The Tigers’ legal counsel have contacted the bar, and the owner expects to receive a cease-and-desist order this week.
