Frank Martin to South Carolina? Why is He Taking a Step Back?
Saturday on the CBS pre-game show, Kansas State coach Frank Martin was asked about the swirling rumors involving South Carolina. He issued what turned out to be a non-denial denial when he said: “The stuff that gets out these days, I look at it as a compliment that we’re doing our job the right way at Kansas State that these sort of things get out.”
This morning, Kellis Robinett of the Kansas City Star and Wichita Eagle has said that he called Martin’s agent, who confirmed that they have had conversations with South Carolina. Kent Babb, who also writes for the Kansas City Star on the Chiefs beat, and is a South Carolina alum, said that the trustees were having a meeting to discuss a contractual matter, likely Martin. Babb just now tweeted out that the Columbia, South Carolina paper is reporting the hire.
Frank Martin flirted with Miami last year, which was understandable since he coached high school basketball there and had ties to the area, even if the job was not as attractive. But make no mistake – leaving Kansas State for South Carolina would be a step back. I doubt Martin is doing this for some vague stability because of the all the football realignment.
South Carolina has not won a NCAA tournament game since 1972. You trade out Kansas for Kentucky, but also play in the half of the SEC that has Billy Donovan’s Gators, plus three other perennial tournament contenders in Missouri, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. Kansas State has made the tournament 26 times to South Carolina’s eight. He has no ties to South Carolina, unlike Gregg Marshall of Wichita State who was from the area.
You can understand why South Carolina would be interested – Martin has done a solid job at Kansas State taking over for Bob Huggins. Less clear: why Martin is taking this job? Was it the one that was open, and he has gotten cross-wise with his AD? The Jamar Samuels suspension happened nine days ago. (Martin, by the way, said Sunday that he gave his former players money when they needed it while coaching in high school in Miami). I guess it’s possible that Martin was upset about that and initiated contact. It just seems like a drastic move that makes little sense for Martin other than getting out of Manhattan.

Being 2 hours from Charleston > being anywhere in the state of Kansas.

Frank Martin would make for a great drill instructor.
March 26th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
people haven’t paid this much attention to south carolina basketball since…?
March 26th, 2012 at 12:29 PM
He probably wants to catch some good football every now and then and just can’t handle another season watching 7 on 7 drills.

He will have similar success at SC that he had at K-State. My main concern with the hire is that he will jump ship again.

What happened to the other dude that wanted the job, Jay V?

Manhattan is 2 hours from Kansas City, and they don’t put mustard all up in their barbecue.
March 26th, 2012 at 12:33 PM
Didn’t he get KST to a 3 seed? That’s a tall ask at SC, no? Also, I thought home boy from Wichita State was going to SC?
March 26th, 2012 at 12:33 PM
I’ve heard the AD and Martin don’t get along. That being said, if Martin really wanted to leave Manhattan you’d think he would wait for a better opening. This seems more like a ploy to get paid to stay where he’s at.

Columbia, SC isn’t exactly gorgeous, but it has to be about 100x better than Manhattan, Kansas. That place is a total shit hole.
March 26th, 2012 at 12:38 PM
It’s my understanding that Manhattan is in the middle of nowhere and is a shithole, yes/
March 26th, 2012 at 12:38 PM
I assumed this site would appreciate someone taking a ‘cock shot.
March 26th, 2012 at 12:40 PM
Yeah, because K-State is such an awesome job.

I’m from eastern North Carolina so to me true barbecue is a simple salt, vinegar and cider base using the whole hog but I love and respect all types of ‘cue.
Since Martin was living in Manhattan I have a difficult time calling this a lateral move when all things are considered.
March 26th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
it’s a done deal. he’s leaving.
Fogler got SC a 2 AND a 3 in consecutive years. It can be done.
As for Gregg…our AD has issues with him. That’s all I can really say.

This. There is absolutely nothing intrinsic about K-State that makes it a better job than South Carolina.
March 26th, 2012 at 12:44 PM
I think it is a better job, though. SC is just like UGA. When the bball team is good, people go and have a good time and pull for them, but if the bball team is bad, they only care if football is bad, too.
March 26th, 2012 at 12:47 PM
he did a great job with huggins’ players.
March 26th, 2012 at 12:48 PM
Yet, SCarolina outdrew K-State attendance-wise 10 of the last 12 years. Not like K-State is constantly filling the arena.
March 26th, 2012 at 12:52 PM
And still couldnt get out of the 1st round.
K-State is not a great job, Martin can pay players anywhere. K-State was in a similar situation as S. Carolina when Martin and Huggins arrived.
March 26th, 2012 at 12:55 PM
Tough to be K St. as you’re nothing but a stepping stone unless you get someone with some sort of connection to the school. Same thing NU is faced with by hiring Miles, which I think is a good hire. After the first bit of success he has here (if any), he’s gone.
March 26th, 2012 at 12:58 PM
There is a whole lot of talent in that state. People tend to forget about it since nobody ever stays and plays for SC… Or plays college at all. Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Jermaine O’Neal, Raymond Felton, Ramon Sessions…
March 26th, 2012 at 12:59 PM
Big dry spell recently though. None of those guys played HS hoops in the last 10 years.
March 26th, 2012 at 1:01 PM
Milton Jennings!

This. There is absolutely nothing intrinsic about K-State that makes it a better job than South Carolina.
You have never eaten at the Olive Garden in town, then.

Think this had anything to do with it?

Crap, link fail.

Wait a second, there are some fantastic OG’s in South Carolina.
