Ballin’: Mike Brown Benched Kobe During the Lakers Loss to Memphis
Memphis 102, LA Lakers 96 Bynum got his (30 points), Gasol missed 11 of his 15 shots, and Kobe got benched. The Lakers (3rd loss in five games) missed another chance to open up a bigger lead on the struggling Clippers by suffering just their 4th home loss of the season. Here’s a GIF of Kobe taking out his benching frustrations on a chair. Later, he refused to criticize coach Mike Brown. Reserve OJ Mayo scored 16 points; the Memphis bench outscored the LA bench 41-9.
Atlanta 139, Utah 133, 4 OT: Joe Johnson scored 37 for the Hawks, including this step-back 3-pointer that forced triple overtime. The Jazz ran out of gas in the 4th OT. How ridiculous was this game? Gordon Hayward played 57 minutes (but only shot 4-of-15). In 54 minutes, Devin Harris shot just 4-of-18.
Minnesota 117, Denver 100: Kevin Love scored 30 points and collected 21 rebounds and the Timberwolves did everything right in a road romp. They had 25 assists, took 18 offensive rebounds, and made 12 three-pointers.
Oklahoma City 103, Miami 87: NBA Finals preview? Wasn’t much of one. Kevin Durant scored 28 to lead five Thunder in double figures in a surprisingly easy win for OKC. Tough to tell what’s more impressive in the video above – Harden’s perfect pass, or Durant’s quick catch and score. In the video below, I love how Durant quickly calls for the alley-oop. Thunder looked sharp.
For Miami, this was the highlight:
Boston 88, Washington 76: The 76ers loss to the Spurs combined with this Celtics victory means there’s a tie atop the Atlantic.
Portland 90, Golden State 87: North Carolina to Texas on that alley-oop. You know the Warriors are in tank mode when a 2nd round pick from Hofstra starts at point guard and takes 22 shots. They definitely want to retain that Top 7 draft pick. Right now, they have the 9th worst record in the league and even though strange things happen in the lottery, there’s a strong chance they’d lose that pick (to Utah).

I think that was just him coming to the bench after a timeout- they had just turned it over and he was pissed. The benching hadn’t occurred yet. Semantics, but still.

I loved to rip on Joe Johnson and his horrendous contract with the best of them, but he’s playing really well right now. And to think, TBL (again) said Atlanta would miss the playoffs. Man up, TBL. Admit you just hate Atlanta, even though hating them makes little sense as they have no chance of winning anything.

I’m pumped for the game on Wednesday. I will be in attendance, and of course, arriving to the CNN center very early for multiple $5 32 ouncers. Go Bulls.

Oh, and yes Gods, JJ has been pretty solid lately.

Only time I saw him taking out his frustrations on a chair last night during the game was after the Lakers gave up a 3 on 0 fastbreak. But I’m not a sports journalist, so I could be wrong.

I will be there as well. We’re rocking my brother’s bosses tickets again, which means we’ll be shithoused by halftime. Also, spend the extra $1 at the sandwich place next to the Great Wraps and get you a Newcastle. 32oz of awesome for only $6.

To be fair, not unreasonable to think Atlanta would miss the playoffs when you pre-cog that they would lose their coach to the Knicks mid-season.

But… But… He was sooo mad at Mike Brown for benching him!

suddenly I’m a big mike brown fan.
March 26th, 2012 at 10:09 AM
I will do just that. Can’t believe I’ve never known this existed. I think I’ll be in the shitty seats, but front row upper bowl and behind the benches, so not tooo shitty. Keep an eye out for me. I’ll be the asshole rocking a bulls hat and a shirt with MJ on it.

Everybody hated the Johnson contract only because it means that their ceiling is the 4 seed and a 2nd round exit every year. But if the Hawks and their fans are fine with that so be it. Fact is most franchises would kill for that ceiling.
March 26th, 2012 at 10:10 AM
Thanks, OKC. Your help in keeping Miami out of the cat bird seat is appreciated.
March 26th, 2012 at 10:14 AM
It is frustrating, though. They will always be in the 4-6 range in the East, but nothing better. I don’t think any fan base should want that to be their ceiling, but then you look at Charlotte or Washington and you think you should be happy with what you have.

Where was this back bone from Brown when he was coaching Lebron?
March 26th, 2012 at 10:16 AM
The Heat have to play them again in a couple weeks too…seems like they got punished by being a bigger TV draw than the Bulls since they got OKC and the Lakers twice with the Bulls playing each just once
March 26th, 2012 at 10:16 AM
Yes, and it was a good one. Havent seen the Heat give up that many easy baskets since LeBron came to town, great gameplan by Thunder.
Mike Brown is a terrible coach, always has been.
March 26th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
Fuck you Lakers. Take care of the bottom half of the playoff bracket.
March 26th, 2012 at 12:43 PM
Whoa, I saw the game. Kobe didn’t get benched. The Lakers were getting their asses kicked. They started to make a come back with very little time left. The Crowd chanted Kobe! Kobe! Kobe! Brown sent Kobe to the scorers table, Memphis called a time out, Brown pulled him back.
I guess this spin is better than just “Lakers lose to Memphis”. Out hustled…
March 26th, 2012 at 12:46 PM
lol @ “taking his frustrations out on a chair”. Kobe missed a shot, and the Lakers gave up a 0-3 fastbreak. IT was deflating so he punched a chair in the time out. Mike Brown benched him AFTER that.
