Mike Wallace Reportedly Wants Larry Fitzgerald Money, Which Isn’t Happening. So He’ll Be Back in Pittsburgh
Mike Wallace is available for a first round pick this year, if a team is willing to sign him to an offer sheet. I talked about his prospects a few weeks ago and what teams should be willing to pay based on historic performance of Wallace vs draft picks used on receivers in the first round. Obviously, Mike Wallace’s demands for a contract would play a role in that. Teams aren’t going to give up a first round pick AND pay him like his is an unrestricted free agent.
According to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, the San Francisco 49ers were one of the teams that inquired of Mike Wallace, and he is reportedly looking to exceed Larry Fitzgerald money (8-year, $50 million guaranteed, $120 million extension).
No chance. Not even close.
We saw the wide receiver market take off this offseason with deals like Pierre Garcon. Those exceeded my estimates for Wallace’ worth, suggesting either the teams are allocating an even greater percentage to inflation of cap over the next few years, overpaying, or both. I estimated a $7 million per year offer for Wallace, considering he is restricted and draft pick compensation is required. Obviously, he is going to get more than that now, as the market has exploded. Just not this year.
So, the good news is that he will be back in Pittsburgh if his demands are anywhere near that. The bad news for Pittsburgh is that he won’t be back in 2013, unless franchised. No team is giving him Larry Fitzgerald money, but someone will blow Pierre Garcon money out of the water.

Titus Young > Mike Wallace
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:12 PM
Yea, that’s pretty funny.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:12 PM
Bullshit report that SF put out there.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:14 PM
I think he franchised next year, and then resigns with the Steelers when the TV contracts explode. Him and Brown are not going anywhere unless they fizzle out.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:21 PM
hope he doesn’t get hurt next season if he wants Fitzgerald money since he’s worth nowhere near that with his current body of work.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:21 PM
It makes sense though…why hasn’t anyone given up a 1st rounder for him unless his contract demands are ridiculous. He is a great WR.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:24 PM
yeah, at this point the only team that could give that money is the Broncos, but even if Manning does work out there they’d have a horrible % of cap space tied up between those two players.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:26 PM
Not every team has a QB with the arm strength that would make him worth it.
If he wants that kind of money he’s a jackass. Granted his haircut told us that already
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:26 PM
I want In-N-Out so bad right now.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:26 PM
Here is 3 WR body of work through their 1st 3 seasons. Any guesses who they are:
WR A: 171 catches; 3,206 yards; 18.7 avg; 24 tds
WR B: 193 catches; 3,071 yards; 15.9 avg; 21 tds
WR C: 230 catches; 3,135 yards; 13.6 avg; 24 tds
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:27 PM
I believe he recently said something about not believing what you hear.
Guy is good, but not take over game by himself and dominate good.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:28 PM
That is awesome. No WR is worth that amount.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:29 PM
WR A: Hakeem Nicks
WR B: Hakeem Nicks
WR C: Mike Woodson
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:30 PM
Close Mole. Mike Woodson is B.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:31 PM
a) wallace
b) megatron
c) boldin?
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:32 PM
but what if he’s a really good blocker? Then he deserves the money, right?
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:32 PM
b marshall is one of those
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:32 PM
Spence, A & B are correct. C is Fitz.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:33 PM
I like these guesses
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:33 PM
really? huh…thought he’d have a higher YPC than that.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:33 PM
Wallace takes the top off the D but the dude is a tad bit overrated, and I can say that as a giant Steeler fan.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:34 PM
Isn’t Mike Wallace as good as Fitzgerald right now? I would think these demands aren’t insane if he was an UFA.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:34 PM
Yeah, but Calvin had a bunch of garbage chuckers throwing to him.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:34 PM
Those kind of comparisons are stupid. You could make Jamarcus Russell look as bad as Mark Sanchez, and that does a disservice to Jamarcus.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:35 PM
per advanced stats, that is.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:36 PM
They are completely different players…but I would guess all GMs would take Larry for the next 5 years.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:36 PM
Isn’t Mike Wallace as good as Fitzgerald right now?
how about drops? toughness? fitz’s performance in the supe was electrifying. to me, that’s an intangible
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:36 PM
regardless, are those numbers worthy of $120m/$50m in guarantees?
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:37 PM
Hakeem Nicks’ first three years ain’t too slouchy, either:
202 catches, 3034 yards, 15.0 avg., 24 TDs.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:37 PM
Kitna, Orlovsky, Culpepper, Stanton, Stafford. Wow.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:37 PM
Hines Ward never made huge bucks though. But was also a dickhead for threatening to hold out. Just a huge dickhead all around really. Except his actual dick head.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:37 PM
He and Brandon Marshall are going to love catching balls from Jay Cutler next year.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:38 PM
Mike Wallace isnt exactly the brightest bulb, try to watch an interview with him
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:38 PM
WR A: 171 catches; 3,206 yards; 18.7 avg; 24 tds
WR B: 193 catches; 3,071 yards; 15.9 avg; 21 tds
WR C: 230 catches; 3,135 yards; 13.6 avg; 24 tds
Okay, now split that money up between Roethlisberger and Wallace, a year of backup QB’s in detroit + Stafford w/ Megatron last year, and derek anderson/john skelton/max hall/richard barrel/kevin kolb + Fitzgerald over two seasons.
How are you dividing that pie? Giving as much to Wallace as Fitzgerald?
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:39 PM
My point was merely disproving the idea that his current body of work is not worth a big contract. Fitz and Calvin are definitely on another level than him right now, and probably at a level he may never reach. But he has put up comparable numbers through his 1st 3 years to them despite sharing the ball w/ other WR and rarely playing playing from behind.
The truth is probably that it would take a contract comparable to Fitzgerld’s to sign Wallace, because otherwise the Steelers would match. The league source gave that to the reporter so they can say we tried when fans grumble about re-signing Ted Ginn.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:39 PM
Wallace takes the top off the D but the dude is a tad bit overrated, and I can say that as a giant Steeler fan.
would you match that if it was offered and matching was an option?
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:40 PM
shit, Nicks is going to do that in next season!
which is why TBL drafted him to two teams in a mock draft years ago.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Mike Wallace isnt exactly the brightest bulb, try to watch an interview with him
and fitz is a good egg, a trait that has some value as well
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:40 PM
I dont know, but that fat fuck Roethlisberger is going to want most of it.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:41 PM
Comparable numbers != comparable player. Wallace isn’t a top five receiver all around.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:41 PM
Because he’s asian, right?
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:42 PM
right, he’s worth more than his RFA tender, but he’s nowhere near Fitzgerald money with his current body of work, which was my point.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:42 PM
There are rumors he’s hung like a midget with high blood pressure.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:43 PM
Not so fast
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:43 PM

My look at Wallace’s comps takes into account how productive he was.
A look at Fitzgerald comps (consistently more productive over longer time) would produce better historical results. So I disagree that “his production” merits getting paid like Fitzgerald.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:46 PM
Fitzgeralds contract is a weird one to pick. Didn’t they have to guarantee a ton of money in it because his rookie deal already had a bunch of guarantees in it due to escalators.
Also, if Fitz was a UFA now, he’d get a bigger contract than that. Something similar to what Calvin just got.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:47 PM
Over the last two years, Wallace has played five games without Roethlisberger. Prorated numbers over the course of 16 games = 42 catches, 938 yards, 6.5 TD’s. So when he plays with QB’s like Fitzgerald has, his numbers aren’t like Fitzgerald.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:47 PM
would I want Pitt to match 50 guaranteed and 120 total? No.
His only asset is his speed, and look at his numbers in the playoffs and at the end of the year. He tails off pretty dramatically.
He’s not real bright, as interviews have shown. And I’ve read that he’s not the film room worker that the rest of the bunch we have up there is.
Add all that up, no, I don’t want to match.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:48 PM
again, comparing the stats is comparing results of caught balls only. how many attempts were there before he got those results? and also again, toughness and lack of diva attitude counts a lot, to me anyway
and fitz is a good egg, a trait that has some value as well
Not so fast
ok, a relatively good egg
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:49 PM
Bring back Limas Sweed.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:50 PM
That was not what I was saying. Rather I was just pointing out he has had a substantial amount of production up to this point which is comparable to Fitzgerald. If he continues to be similar to Fitz career production, like he has, he’ll get his big pay day.
But he doesn’t deserve that contract now. And I don’t think that is what he is demanding now either. I think the report was a leak to cover SF ass.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:52 PM
My God. My boss has foxnews on. Amazed evolution hasn’t reversed course amongst its viewership.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:53 PM
So he would suck on the Niners is what you are saying.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:53 PM
I think Antonio Brown, in the long run, is a more valuable receiver than Wallace. And before someone says “Wallace goes deep and opens field up for Brown,” I know that.
I think Brown does everything better except for down-field speed.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:53 PM
Cannot match those type of numbers if they were offered, which they won’t be. Antonio Brown is a RFA next year, and I’d rather have AB if given a choice between the 2.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:54 PM
what happened to the post every five minutes TBL of a couple weeks ago?
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:54 PM
I just bought two Sweed game used jersey cards on eBay yesterday for $1.98.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:55 PM
since you watch more Steeler football than I do, would Wallace’s overall skillset survive a drop in speed to allow him to continue putting up big numbers like he has?
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:56 PM
I don’t get this thinking at all. Brown is very skilled, and i really like him, but let see how well he does without all that room to operate while teams are bracketing Wallace. It’s no coincidence his numbers took off when Wallace’s started to tail off.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:56 PM
JMac is having some mirror time now to check out his guns.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:56 PM

Wasn’t Fitz playing with Warner for at least one of his first 3 years?
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:57 PM
are you sure it hasn’t reversed course? it’s at least stalled at this point.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:58 PM
No. Both of their numbers tailed off when their QB was down to 1 good leg. AB has better hands and runs better routes. Watch who Ben goes to on a big third down, it’s AB or Heath Miller.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:58 PM
super bowl year at least sirspicious
March 23rd, 2012 at 2:01 PM
warner split time in 2005 when Fitz had 1409 yards and 103 receptions.
Fitzgerald and Megatron are the only 2 receivers in the game now that truly feel little impact from shitty QB’s. their numbers dip a bit, but they are still leading receivers among wideouts that have good QB’s.
March 23rd, 2012 at 2:01 PM
If you are asking he is more than just a deep threat, the answer is yes. But that is his best asset. He definitely has room to improve, but he hasn’t shown anything in game or practice (from what i read) that he isn’t willing.
Also, Arians/Ben were not utilizing him correctly last year. It mostly mostly Go routes or WR screens. No intermediate stuff.
March 23rd, 2012 at 2:01 PM
+1 dude. I agree.
March 23rd, 2012 at 2:04 PM
yeah, i’m curious to know if he still has the talent to create seperation if he can’t blow everyone away with speed. I just haven’t seen enough of him.
March 23rd, 2012 at 2:07 PM
The guys who have the best matchups in single coverage who run inside routes?
March 23rd, 2012 at 2:07 PM
steelers fans: how is wallace with drops? attitude? do you cindier him mentally tough?
am i crazy or aren;t these important?
March 23rd, 2012 at 2:08 PM
He’s getting there….slowly. Like someone else said, he doesn’t appear have a Jerry Rice-like practice routine. Antonio Brown, from all accounts, is the first one at the facility and the last to leave. He puts in more work than anyone on the team from what more than a few people have said.
March 23rd, 2012 at 2:09 PM
that would be worth committing a big contract, work ethic pushing the ability farther along.
March 23rd, 2012 at 2:09 PM
OK, tell me who this is (first three years):
215 catches, 3,000 yards, 13.9 YPC, 24 TDs
March 23rd, 2012 at 2:10 PM
Following three seasons:
234 catches, 3,240 yds, 13.8 YPC, 24 TDs
March 23rd, 2012 at 2:10 PM
No, the more dependable guys with better hands.
March 23rd, 2012 at 2:11 PM
215 catches, 3,000 yards, 13.9 YPC, 24 TDs
golden richards
March 23rd, 2012 at 2:11 PM
He’s rarely mentioned in the same conversations with all those guys discussed above.
March 23rd, 2012 at 2:12 PM
Colston
March 23rd, 2012 at 2:12 PM
Kaiser, I don’t really have an answer for you because i have rarely seen him have to do that. Teams give him a big cushion because of his speed. His route running is pretty good, probably could improve. he isn’t afraid of contact or physicality. But I have never seen him in a situation where he didn’t have to rely on his speed.
Not sure what it proves, but 3 of his 8 TDs were in the RZ, where his speed is less of an asset. 2 more were within 25 yards.
March 23rd, 2012 at 2:13 PM
Most underrated WR of his generation.
March 23rd, 2012 at 2:17 PM
Catch Rate via FO:
Wallace: 63%
Brown: 56%
I wish i knew why a segment of Steelerfans take a revisionist history to what he has accomplished. He has been a stud, with great work habits and a ton on all around skill.
March 23rd, 2012 at 2:19 PM
Fair or not, it’s (lack of discussion) probably a product of the offense he is in and having Brees throw to him.
March 23rd, 2012 at 2:23 PM
Also via FO:
This is a reference to incomplete passes, not dropped passes: dropped passes are not specified in publicly available play-by-play, and unfortunately we cannot yet correct for this.
A for effort, C- for execution. If you want to know who has better hands, ignore the internet and watch the games.
I love Wallace, would hate to lose him. I just think AB is the better overall football player between the 2.
March 23rd, 2012 at 2:28 PM
Agree with all this. AB makes tough, usually big catches. Wallace makes plays himself, but isnt as fluid running routes and with the ball in his hands, and is more prone to drops. He’s still damn good, but gun to head I want AB.
March 23rd, 2012 at 2:28 PM
So all the Deep passes Ben under throws to wallace counts against him? So you are saying he has even better hands? Wallace got less targets than Brown and did more with them, despite seeing the better coverage.
They are both great to have, but you are mistaken if you think Wallace will be easy to replace.
March 23rd, 2012 at 2:30 PM
Same deal for Greg Jennings, whose last 3 years look like this: 181, 3,327, 18.4, and 25.
March 23rd, 2012 at 2:36 PM
Never said he’d be easy to replace. That speed doesn’t grow on trees. I think they will end up keeping them both, but AB is the more complete receiver right now, and I think most fans would say the same thing. Wallace can be a complete game changer though. Again, would HATE to lose him. Just don’t keep trying to convince me that Wallace has better hands than Brown, that’s ridiculous.
March 23rd, 2012 at 2:39 PM
I’m with Coop and 46 years on this one, I think AB is a better all around receiver. Less drops, better routes, etc.
None of this should be read as a slight to Wallace, beyond saying he’s not worth $120 mill.
March 23rd, 2012 at 2:43 PM
Poor phrasing on my part. AB and Wallace run different routes because of the WR (Z vs X) positions they play. More often, Browns routes are closer to LOS, while Wallace is a vertical variety. I think this makes it seem like there is a huge disparity between the two. Both are really good at them. Sanders too, if he can stay healthy.
Man, it blows my mind that arguably the Steelers strongest unit, the WR, consists of a 3rd, a 6th and a 3rd. Very fortunate to have Colbert.
March 23rd, 2012 at 2:49 PM
I would say that far beyond Cowher, Tomlin, and even Lebeau, Colbert is the most valuable person in the organization over the last 12 years. Consistently finds diamonds in the rough at almost every position. So many home runs in the draft during his tenure that it’s almost unreal.
March 23rd, 2012 at 3:11 PM
+1 46yr, I agree w that too.
March 23rd, 2012 at 3:57 PM
And didnt let emotions and public opinion make him overreact and give away Roethlisberger when the masses were all riled up.
March 23rd, 2012 at 4:02 PM
I think that call and the one one Santonio were made higher up the pecking order.
