Austin Rivers is Going to the NBA
Austin Rivers is following Mason Plumlee out the door early to the NBA. Jeff Goodman reports that Rivers is signing with an agent and will enter the draft. This one’s no surprise, even though fans and pundits have been saying all season he “needs” to stay another year.
Yeah, right. Once I saw this crossover against Ohio State, I knew Rivers was gone. The only person who could stop Rivers this season? His Coach and that Duke system. Put Rivers in an aggressive offense and give him free reign and he’s a 20-25 point scorer in college.
I think he’ll make a dynamic pro. I’ve seen some folks compare Rivers to Jerryd Bayless, but I see him as a slightly less explosive Russell Westbrook (but a better shooter). I don’t think we’ve seen anything close to the best Rivers has to offer.
I had Rivers No. 2 overall in my last mock draft, which probably was a bit high, but there’s no way he’s falling out of the Top 10. Among guards, I’ve got Rivers ahead of Jeremy Lamb, but behind Brad Beal.
Remember how Kyrie Irving was a nice player as a freshman at Duke, but because of the system, it was tough to tell just how outstanding he was? Irving has been awesome with the Cavs, and looks like a future star. I don’t think it’ll take Rivers – who turns 20 in August – long to put up impressive numbers in the NBA.
Chad Ford seems to disagree. He’s got Rivers 21st in his mock draft. That’s absurd. There’s zero chance Rivers falls that far. (Ford does like my Lillard-to-the-Jazz prediction, it seems.)
As for Duke … better get recruiting, Coach K.

Kyrie Irving >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Austin Rivers
March 23rd, 2012 at 11:50 AM
This is the most TBL line of all time.

hahahahah… as if Coach K has to “recruit” anymore.
March 23rd, 2012 at 11:51 AM
i read the other day, maybe here, that rivers was ruined after he made that shot to beat nc
/leading a TBL pool, so respect my cbb comments
March 23rd, 2012 at 11:51 AM
Dude averaged almost 18 ppg.
March 23rd, 2012 at 11:51 AM
If Coach K keep this up Calipari may actually graduate more players than he does.
March 23rd, 2012 at 11:52 AM
Remember how Kyrie Irving was a nice player as a freshman at Duke, but because of the system, it was tough to tell just how outstanding he was?
Wasn’t it kind of tough to tell how good he was because he only played like 10 games?
March 23rd, 2012 at 11:53 AM
Steve Francis ceiling.
March 23rd, 2012 at 11:53 AM
I remember him missing most of the season because of the foot injury, but you’re the expert.
March 23rd, 2012 at 11:54 AM
I remember him being injured for over 3/4 of the year.
March 23rd, 2012 at 11:54 AM
high five for comments 8-10
March 23rd, 2012 at 11:55 AM
That’s being generous
March 23rd, 2012 at 11:56 AM
Also the only way he goes in the top ten is if Michael Jordan is drafting for Charlotte.
March 23rd, 2012 at 11:56 AM
No, I remember watching him and thinking he’d be a great pro. I watch Austin Rivers and think, “needs work.”
I’m staying away from him with my imaginary lottery pick.
March 23rd, 2012 at 11:56 AM
He played in like 10-11 games and hauled in 17.5, 4.3 and 3.4 per game. That’s pretty badass for a true freshman, no?
March 23rd, 2012 at 11:56 AM
Yeah, right. Once I saw this crossover against Ohio State, I knew Rivers was gone.

WHAT?! TBL is renowned for his perspective and lack of knee-jerking.
March 23rd, 2012 at 11:57 AM
Did he cite your work somewhere? Or are you just assuming the only way he could have come up with it was by reading JMac’s material?

Rivers needs to improve his shot selection
March 23rd, 2012 at 11:57 AM
Why the fuck have I been double posting lately? That’s like 5 times in the last 3 days.
I blame David Lessa.
March 23rd, 2012 at 11:59 AM
I always think of this when I think of that name.

aren’t nba coaches more likely to let talent be free to create?
March 23rd, 2012 at 11:59 AM
It’s not just that, it’s that he did that while shooting 53-46-90.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:00 PM
The internet has to be hated by writers. It’s essentially an instance vetting process when they make a claim. The premium put on being accurate is nice, though.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:00 PM
W…T…F?!?!?!?
You mean the kid that b/c of the system averaged 17.5 points and 5 assists before getting injured?
go fuck yourself.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:01 PM
That’s pretty badass for a true freshman, no?
what? all they have to do is play basketball, eat sleep and play some more basketball. i could pull those numbers too if i was talented and gifted and the right size and didn’t have to do other things
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:01 PM
I’m actually gonna’ be rooting for Duke to dominate the ACC next year just to silence the naysayers.
/not a Duke hater or lover
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:03 PM
Sarcasm, right?
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:04 PM
HOW DID YOU GET THESE NUMBERS?
/giggles
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:05 PM
This seems to be a bit or a harsh response, no?
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:05 PM
also, will someone explain to me how Duke’s “system” doesn’t allow us to see how good some players are? I’m honestly curious as to what that means.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:05 PM
I miss having my lady porn book to read every day.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:05 PM
I love it.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:05 PM
Give me a list of 40 potential first-round picks and I’ll randomly assign them to a team by drawing out of a hat and I bet a few of my picks will match up with Chad Ford’s too.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:07 PM
Sarcasm, right?
does it matter?

how badly do your loins yearn for it?
/i think that might be lady-porn-speak
//maybe
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:08 PM
TBL…please explain the “duke system”…I’d love to hear about it. Because unlike the “Carolina system” that roy williams sticks to regardless of whether his players can actually function in it, Duke changes its offense to best suit its current players. Hence why in ’10, Duke was one of the slowest teams in the nation, heavily emphasizing offensive rebounding, then when Kyrie came in, Duke switched to one of the fastest teams in the nation to take advantage of Kyrie’s court vision and speed with the ball.
There is no Duke system, at least in terms of offense (defense is pretty constant- smothering man to man, prevent the three ball). Anyone that says otherwise knows about as much about college basketball as the blonde girl in front of me that went to Williamette College. AKA absolutely nothing.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:09 PM
You forgot flopping and slapping the floor.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:10 PM
Pretty sure he never watched Irving at Duke. The Michigan State game alone from last year shouldve told you he’d be great. If he doesnt get hurt he’s probably national player of the year.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:11 PM
Wonder if Roy slows it down tonight without Marshall.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:11 PM
Not a bad choice, but this book didn’t use the word “loins” all that much. Actually, I’m not sure if it used “loins” ever.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:12 PM
Come on TBL. Russ Westbrook is the bast athlete in the NBA. Rivers isn’t even in the best athlete in his draft class conversation. Not even close.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:12 PM
lol
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:14 PM
You forgot flopping and slapping the floor.
seems like they could be combined
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:14 PM
jeff saturday to the packers…. okay.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:15 PM
that’s not a bad thing.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:17 PM
TBL was complaining about Ford’s ranking of Rivers last night on Twitter. Gottlieb responded:
I guess they both missed that killer crossover.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:18 PM
lol.
Kyrie: 53%/46%/90% — 17 PPG
Austin: 43%/36%/65% — 15 PPG
You’ve written a lot of dumb things (hell you’ve made low 7 figs off doing it), but saying that people worried about Kyrie because of Duke’s system is high on your list.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:18 PM
I laughed.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:18 PM
20 – 25 points a game? Isn’t Stoglin the only guy in the ACC scoring over 18 a game?
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:20 PM
It may be the old white guy in me, but when they mentioned this during the game against Lehigh, I was astounded that a guard could shoot FT so poorly.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:20 PM
did you end up sending your kindle in?
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:21 PM
Austin Rivers might end up being a poor man’s Dajuan Wagner, minus the ailments.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:22 PM
Also for reference only four players in Duke’s history have averaged over 20 a game. Jeff Mullins, Bob Verga, Dick Groat, Art Heyman.
So basically TBL is saying Duke’s system prevented Rivers from being the most prolific scorer in Duke’s history.
Oh wait he’ll probably use this fact to back up his idiotic “system” claim.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:23 PM
For a career, right? Because my boy JJ lit that shit up his senior year.
/hated him at Duke
//love him in the NBA
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:24 PM
What I have learned is that TBL never loses these “locks”. If Rivers goes in the top 10, he’s right. If Rivers doesn’t go in the top 10, those teams made mistakes.
If Rivers plays well in the NBA, it validates his top 10 ranking. If he plays poorly in the NBA, he’s in the wrong system.
In the end, he gets our click on every Rivers post.
/At least CRM gave up on Jimmer posts
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:24 PM
I still think Cherokee Parks is the greatest fat white guy to ever play at Duke.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:24 PM
It’s not a bad comparison once you realize Francis wasn’t really that good.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:25 PM
Nobody scores a ton at a major college. It’s just not possible, especially with the short games.
Iverson only averaged 25 PPG as a SOPHOMORE. No way in hell does Rivers touch that as a frosh.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:26 PM
Right, K’s system, which gives guards all the freedom in the world, was holding Rivers back in a season where he pretty much had the green light to do whatever he wanted on offense.
/wanking motion
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:27 PM
Rivers is a classic tweener, btw.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:27 PM
Rivers will be TERRIBLE in the NBA, but as a Duke fan glad as shit to see him go. Completely ruined their offense (yes I know he scored a lot, but their system broke down every time he touched the ball).
He’s got swagger, but his biggest asset is driving to the hoop and with his size and terrible decision making, he’s going to get crushed. Any time he ran into a defender he threw his arms up like he got shot, that won’t fly in the NBA. Also, he’s a slashing SG who shoots 65% from the FT.
/Fuck I hate Austin Rivers with a passion.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:28 PM
I still think Cherokee Parks is the greatest fat white guy to ever play at Duke.
i wonder if his folks ever considered naming him Sioux
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:28 PM
he just fell off hard. had a handful of nice seasons. IMO.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:28 PM
Yeah. He averaged 19.9 for his career.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:28 PM
Austin Rivers didn’t even get to the basket that consistently at Duke.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:29 PM
What?
Injuries kinda ruined him, but he was good to great his first 6 years.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:30 PM
posts where the commentariat shreds TBL’s logic to bits are my favorite.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:30 PM
Francis was 20-7-6 over his first six years. That’s very nice.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:31 PM
Or, maybe, Ford isn’t taken with aback by his “star power” and sees him for what he really is: a decent-to-good NBA player who is probably not worth spending a lottery pick on.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:31 PM

i’d like my nba coaches question answered please. #22
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:35 PM
No. I need to call them first and haven’t felt patient enough to talk to any customer service group after my recent ordeal with mother fucking Bank of America and Comcast.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:46 PM
He peaked his second year, never really won a lot of games, high turnovers, etc.
I’m not saying he’s garbage, but could Austin Rivers score 20ppg on 42% shooting in the NBA? Sure he could. I don’t know if he could have the rebound or assist numbers Francis had though.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:52 PM
What’s with the Francis hate?? I mean, two-guard trapped in a point guard’s body, but he was a nightmare to defend.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:56 PM
Rivers’ ceiling is Rodney Stuckey.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:57 PM
I think the best way to defend Francis was to just let him shoot.
March 23rd, 2012 at 12:57 PM
Comments 8-10 and 60-62 are great. Watching a few Duke games this season, I thought Rivers held back Duke not the other way around.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:00 PM
12 guys have been able to do what he did in his first six years (19-6-6, 53% True shooting) for just one year. He was a special player.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:01 PM
Imagine where the Duke program would be next year if Irving & Rivers would have stayed? Wow. I’m a Heels fan, but love to see these 2 rivals go at it, and when the best players are on the court
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:03 PM
If Rivers fell to the Celtics, they would have to draft him right?
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:04 PM
That made the playoffs once.
Tyreke Evans was what, the first rookie to average 20-5-5 in a season right? That doesn’t mean he doesn’t kinda suck.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:08 PM
Right. He does suck. You’ll have crazy stuff over any single year. We’re talking about 6 straight seasons of stellar play.
And yeah, he made the playoffs once, but he won 43, 45, and 45 games in his four years with Houston. They would have been a 3-5 seed in the East, but shit happens.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:11 PM
Austin Rivers mom is a lottery pick in the Can Get It Draft.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:11 PM
Rondo will destroy the shit out of Rivers. Unless Rivers learns defense, he’s fucked.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:12 PM
No. Doc only wants players who play defense
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:13 PM
Only if the goal is to tank for Matt Barkley.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:15 PM
Even Blake Griffin thinks Rivers isn’t nba ready
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:28 PM
In all seriousness, imagine passing on your own son. There’d be some awkward family dinners afterward.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:30 PM
Said it before, saying it again. Don’t be fooled by the flash. I see another Corey Maggette. He may get numbers as a pro. At what cost?
And, OBTW – when was the last time you saw a coach’s son so flashy and “look-at-me” on the court? He’s gotta grow up more than your usual one-and-done, and in a hurry.
March 23rd, 2012 at 1:35 PM
Rivers doesn’t finish at the rim well in college (dunks not fancy lay-ups). Rivers is not explosive at all. Nor does he have Westbrook’s length.
That is a horrible comparison.
March 23rd, 2012 at 3:11 PM
Doc himself even said Austin wasn’t NBA ready before the first UNC game.
March 23rd, 2012 at 3:22 PM
Bust.
Lock.
