Sweet 16: Syracuse vs. Wisconsin and Michigan State vs. Louisville
Three different Big East versus Big Ten matchups are set for tonight’s regional semifinal action, including both of the early games. Here are your announcer pairings for this week’s action.
#1 Syracuse vs. #4 Wisconsin, East Regional, 7:15 in Boston (CBS). Wisconsin has been overrated all year, right? Well, they are one game from the Elite Eight, in what should be a pretty even matchup with the Orange minus Melo. We know that Wisconsin will play their deliberate style and excellent half court defense to slow the game down. We know that Syracuse will play its zone, and Wisconsin will have to make shots from outside (something Kansas State could not do). Syracuse’s weakness is the offensive rebounds by opponents. However, Wisconsin doesn’t normally crash the glass to rebound as hard as other teams, though they have the players that could in Evans, Bruesewitz, and Berggren. This shows in their defensive rebound rates. Philosophically, the Badgers prefer to get back in numbers, but it will be interesting to see how hard they go at the Orange weakness here.
The Line: Syracuse by 3.5. The pick: Two key questions here that will decide it. One, can Syracuse turn Wisconsin over, something the Badgers are good at avoiding with Jordan Taylor. Two, can the Badgers create second chance opportunities without giving up quick opportunities at the other end. I think this one is even, so Wisconsin +3.5.
#1 Michigan State vs. #4 Louisville, West Regional, 7:47 in Phoenix (TBS). This one is going to be a knock down drag out defensive battle in the half court, with contested shots galore. I think the keys here are going to be whether Louisville can control Michigan State on the offensive glass, and whether the Cardinals, who have not been a great outside shooting team all year (and Russ Smith has struggled in this tournament), can make some outside shots to loosen the Spartans. Also, Peyton Siva needs to play under control and avoid costly turnovers. It’s going to be hard enough to score when shots do go up.
The Line: Michigan State by 5. The pick: Michigan State -5.
Tournament pick record to date: 31-17 against the spread.

March 22nd, 2012 at 7:18 PM
Let’s stand still or move slowly ‘sconsin!
Corrected.
By the beard of Zeus!

I love the way the announcers interact with fans during a spring training game. Fan below the booth just made a great catch, then threw it up for Francona to sign. Damn I need to go down to Florida one of these Marches.
March 22nd, 2012 at 7:22 PM
ORANGE!
March 22nd, 2012 at 7:26 PM
I hate having yankee red sox ESPN games blacked out for the YES network coverage….
March 22nd, 2012 at 7:34 PM
I sure hope the refs let MSU and Louisville beat the hell out of each other.
March 22nd, 2012 at 7:35 PM
Not feeling good about this half now after the refs did the Great Ape, Jared Berggren wrong on that second foul call…college basketball is stupid with the 5 foul limit
March 22nd, 2012 at 7:35 PM
come on Syracuse, please don’t lose this game. I can’t stand this Wisconsin brand of basketball. Efficient and effective, but not a fun watch. yes, I realize they don’t care.
March 22nd, 2012 at 7:46 PM
Agreed, but this also describes a good deal of Big East play this season…do you also hate Georgetown?
March 22nd, 2012 at 7:53 PM
THE CUSE IS IN THE HOUSE OMG OMG
/FUCK FAB MELO
March 22nd, 2012 at 7:57 PM
10 points an insurmountable lead for Wisconsin? Yes. Yes it is.
Interesting offense passing back and forth on the perimeter before jacking an awkward jumper as the shot clock expires.
March 22nd, 2012 at 7:57 PM
CJ Fair back in business. Good news for the cuse
March 22nd, 2012 at 7:59 PM
Dion Waiters is going to be a great 6th man in the NBA. So explosive and fearless
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:00 PM
/fuck fab melo
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:02 PM
Been this way for about three years now…they had something nice going with the Ape inside but a bad second foul call sent him to the bench and the coach like a dumbass sat him for the final 11 minutes of the half
Ha, only the Badgers could play that half and be down just 6
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:02 PM
Boeheim is hilarious..just walks away from visser mid-interview
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:03 PM
Good defense by Wisconsin on that last possession. Will be interesting to see if Bo changes anything against the zone. I hope not
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:04 PM
Agreed, but this also describes a good deal of Big East play this season
Who?
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:06 PM
I dunno, look at their boxscores…saw a ton of games in the 50s this season (hell, their tournament title game was 50-44)
I guess they probably played at a faster pace but it was still the same shit in the end
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:07 PM
Ended with a scoring binge of four whole points. Don’t worry, Wisconsin players are going to have a big glass of milk with some cheese curds at halftime and come storming out of the locker room at a moderate pace.
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:09 PM
Syracuse had their share of games in the 50s and 70s. Some of the big east teams are awful on offense – south florida, louisville, notre dame, west virginia..just brutal to watch
A scintillating 11-9 louiville lead over sparty with 9 minutes left in first half. Reggie miller sucks doing college games
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:09 PM
I do hope you’re not disparaging cheese curds friend
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:10 PM
I guess they probably played at a faster pace but it was still the same shit in the end
you haven’t watched enough big east bball.
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:10 PM

Tremendous.
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:11 PM
Scoring is down in general in CBB. bilas tweeted an article showing the decline over the past 15 years. The 35 second shot clock is definitely part of the problem, as well as the diluted talent spread too thin in D-1. There are way too many schools in D-1. No need for over 300 college programs in the top level
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:11 PM
Only time Ive had cheese curds was on poutine, de-LISH
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:12 PM
Also – #40 on wisconsin is the prototype wisconsin player.
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:12 PM
Poutine, winner.
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:13 PM
Ross ohlendorf is on the red sox? Wtf. Get that triple-a shit out of here
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:13 PM
Never, I am from the land of poutine good sir. I believe we can find middle ground that using cheese curds and milk in lieu of Gatorade is a curious halftime choice.
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:14 PM
I refuse to believe that dummy in the taco bell commercial drove 900 miles just to get the new dorito tacos
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:15 PM
Best big man they’ve had in years…this one can make a move and score in the post!
Here we bread them and throw them in the fryer…people wonder where midwestern friendliness comes from, it’s from saying to hell to good health and being happy to eat those and drink heavy beer, living to 85 is overrated anyhow
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:15 PM
Had no idea either
How about Cook’s pickoff move?!
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:16 PM
Louisville shooting 19% from the field, leads by 6.
Michigan State? 17%
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:16 PM
Ill trade that current wisconsin player for greg stiemsma on the celtics. He sucks at riding the bench
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:17 PM
CJ, i didnt see it. Im flipping back and forth once in a while. I hate listening to the YES network guys.
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:18 PM
Steimsma really should have red-shirted his freshman season, was turning into a nice complete player his senior year but didn’t totally get there…still find it amazing that he’s in the NBA but the dearth of decent big men means they’ll take anyone at this point
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:20 PM
Marquette or Florida is salvating at chance to get into a race with louisville/sparty
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:36 PM
I really Hope Marquette doesn’t Fluke out. They could win the whole thing.
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:44 PM
A shame wisconsin is hitting all these threes. They must be jealous of a real offense like syracuse. The only hope Wisky has is to make every three the rest of the game
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:49 PM
Go Badgers!
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:54 PM
Why run an offense if you can’t fucking miss?
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:58 PM
Wiskys offense consists of
March 22nd, 2012 at 8:58 PM
Jacking up threes.
March 22nd, 2012 at 9:00 PM
Yikes, stop trying to take charges I guess since they’re not getting called
March 22nd, 2012 at 9:07 PM
this WIS offense is a fucking joke
is it 1948?
March 22nd, 2012 at 9:07 PM
This offense is pathetic.
March 22nd, 2012 at 9:07 PM
they’ve wasted 150 seconds of playclock 60 ft from the basket
March 22nd, 2012 at 9:13 PM
Sconnie is gonna fuck around and still have a shot to win this at the end
March 22nd, 2012 at 9:14 PM
HOW THE FUCK CAN WISCONSIN SCORE IN 15 SECONDS?
UNPOSSIBLE
March 22nd, 2012 at 9:14 PM
WHAT A FUCKING ABORTION OF A LAST POSSESSION
ARE YOU FUCKING JOKING
Wisconsin’s coach should be dragged out into the street outside the arena and shot in the face
March 22nd, 2012 at 9:14 PM
EXHALE
March 22nd, 2012 at 9:16 PM
I think Wisky just jacked up another 3.
/Too Soon
March 22nd, 2012 at 9:16 PM
Way to go Wisky. Eat shit Bo Ryan.
March 22nd, 2012 at 9:18 PM
I don’t always have possession down 1 point with 15 seconds left. But when I do I prefer to jack a contested three from 40ft out.
/Most interesting offense in the world
March 22nd, 2012 at 9:20 PM
Eat shit every talking head that said Syracuse couldn’t advance without Fab Melo
March 22nd, 2012 at 9:20 PM
The worst Jerry, the worst…the only reason they were in the game was retarded good shooting but when push came to shove they didn’t know what the fuck to do
March 22nd, 2012 at 9:21 PM
It helped that Vandy shit the bed last weekend then Wisky just did the same.
March 22nd, 2012 at 9:22 PM
Barely got past UNC-Ashville and the Big Ten’s 4th place team…I think they were on to something
March 22nd, 2012 at 9:23 PM
We could have two elite 8 games that are big east vs big east matchups. I hope not because i dont want cuse to see cincy again. Id rather them face the suckeyes
March 22nd, 2012 at 9:24 PM
Fab melo wouldnt stop the 3 point shots. Wisky is just fortunate that they hit 14 threes. They can’t do anything else. Thats just pathetic.
March 22nd, 2012 at 9:25 PM
And I’m sure Syracuse shooting 55% from the field is a common occurrence…I’d root for Cincy tonight if I was you
March 22nd, 2012 at 9:26 PM
Creative.
March 22nd, 2012 at 9:31 PM
Butters, Syracuse normally shoots 45-50 percent. Id rather face OSU than Cincy because cincy’s guards are better than ohio state’s. Aaron Craft will/would get schooled by Scoop or Waiters. Ive seen cincy vs Cuse this year twice. No need for that nightmare again. yancey Gates v Sullinger tonight will be a good matchup. Lets see how Jared does against a real solid big man
March 22nd, 2012 at 9:38 PM
goddammit does College Basketball suck
This is not what Naismith had in mind
March 23rd, 2012 at 11:10 AM
“Barely got past UNC-Ashville and the Big Ten’s 4th place team…I think they were on to something.”
You play to win the game.
