Mason Plumlee is Leaving Duke Early, and if Austin Rivers Leaves Early Too, How Badly Will Duke Struggle in 2013?
Duke, fresh off a stunning 1st round NCAA tournament loss to Lehigh, is about to lose its three best players to the NBA. Miles Plumlee graduates, and his brother, Mason Plumlee, is testing the NBA waters (aka: adios, Durham) according to ESPN’s Jay Williams.
If Austin Rivers leaves – why would he stay? – Duke could be facing a very down year in 2012-2013. Not NIT-down, but more along the lines of 20 wins and a 5-6 seed in March instead of their typical 25-30 wins and a 1-2-3 seed.
They’ll be left with four decent guards – Curry, Dawkins, Cook, Thornton – a 3-point shooting power forward in Ryan Kelly, and Marshall Plumlee, a 6-foot-11 freshman who redshirted.
If you’re wondering who the high-impact recruits are … yikes. There’s only one player in the Top 150 signed (Rasheed Sulaimon).
Fortunately for Duke, North Carolina could lose up to five players to the NBA (would McAdoo bolt?), Florida State graduates five important players, and Virginia will be losing two of its three best players. Because of all that, I won’t go as far as Dan Wolken did and predict Duke will be a bubble team. I don’t think it’s an absurd idea, though.
The favorite in the ACC next year – if CJ Leslie doesn’t leave for the NBA – could be NC State. Yes, I’m on the Wolfpack +8 against Kansas.
[UPDATE: As some of you have noted, NC State has three Top 55 recruits coming in.]

prediction: they’ll make the tournament but probably lose in the first round.
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:30 PM
Holy shit another Plumlee? They are the Molina’s of college basketball. Is he any good?

meh… they seem to be that conferences basketball version of clemson. they’ll find a way to fuck it up.

They do have Alex Murphy (a Rhode Islander) redshirting this year as well.
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:34 PM
um, as much as they struggled in 2012?
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:35 PM
You forgot Alex Murphy and Doc Rivers will tell Austin he isn’t ready, because he isn’t.
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:35 PM
Good god their parents food bill must have been ginormous with 3 teenage 7-foot behemoths in the house.
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:35 PM
He was a McD’s AA, but then again he might have gotten the award based solely on the fact that he signed with Duke. How many McD’s guys do you see go to a team where they can use some inside depth and redshirt?

Brian Butch on line 1….
/all I got
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:36 PM
But will Bob Knight say the word Duke now?
/What we all really need to know
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:37 PM
How long before Plumlee gets tatted up and starts acting “all swole” on the court?
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:37 PM
I’m not sure how much size 18 Keds cost but I am sure its not nearly as bad as air jordans.
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:38 PM
I remember Butch, but didn’t Wisconsin have a pretty loaded front court that year? Loaded meaning a plethora of big bodies to play, not necessarily meaning they are any good.
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:39 PM
If he’s a lottery pick, he’s ready.
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:40 PM
Stop this college bball talk, I cant concentrate w NFL free agency going on
/bad tweet

Probably wont struggle at all. They’re Duke.
Bo Jackson on ESPN right now…how awesome was Bo?
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:41 PM
it’s a leap year, right? that changes everything!
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:41 PM
What’s peculiar about Butch is that I remember it being a pretty big story at the time since it was unprecedented for something like that to happen. I had no idea the third Plumlee was redshirting this year until I read this article. I just thought he sucked and wasn’t getting any burn.

Yeah, they had Wilkinson who was pretty good… and the immortal Dave MADER! I’ve always just thought it was odd that any McD’s guy would redshirt.
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:43 PM
He was very good for Christ School, and was NC PotY.
He was redshirted because they did have depth ahead of him. His brothers, Kelly, and Hairston. Marshall wasn’t ready, he’s bigger physically and a better natural athlete than his brothers but needed to work on strength and post play. Redshirting him was the right way to go, he benefited more from that then he would have from playing garbage time and burning a year.
Also Alex Murphy is really, really good.
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:46 PM
Also they’ve got a really good shot at getting Amile Jefferson, if State doesn’t get him.
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:47 PM
Probably old but Dave Chappelle is now on twitter https://twitter.com/#!/chappelledavidk
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:48 PM
Brian Butch now a member of the Bakersfield Jam of the NBDL!
That sounds pretty horrible.
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:48 PM
Not as awesome as Herschel.
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:49 PM
agree on nc state +8. kansas had ladyballs against purdue.
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:52 PM
I’m still amazed at how fucking jacked Chapelle got. Looks like a different person. Does this make him less funny like the funny fat kid that trims down? No.
I watched the Chapelle’s show episode last night when he knocked up Oprah. Holy shit, Always funny.
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:52 PM
Plumlee’s father (his name is “Perky”. No shit) is a lawyer, so I’m sure they have no problems making ends meet.
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:53 PM
which Herschel are you talking about, 1, 3, or 6?
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:55 PM
Their parents were both college basketball players.
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:55 PM
There’s only one.
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:56 PM
Bo throwing a baseball flat footed from the warning track to home plate without a bounce might be one of the most incredible sports feats of all time.
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:57 PM

well played.
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:58 PM
I’ll always associate Herschel Walker with resurrecting the Dallas Cowboys and ruing the Vikings all at once…shame he couldn’t have brought both down with him
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:58 PM
Mason would be a great fit on the Clippers. Flop City
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:59 PM
Bill Bates’ scrapitude could not help him there. Goodness.
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:59 PM
Maybe so, but not by much…this discussion would be even better if Herschel didn’t go to the USFL and Bo didn’t get hurt
March 22nd, 2012 at 12:59 PM
Also I’m interested to see what happens with Trey Zeigler now that he’s free from CMU.
March 22nd, 2012 at 1:03 PM
He was my favorite player on some decent to mediocre early to mid 90′s Eagles teams.
March 22nd, 2012 at 1:03 PM
Austin Rivers played the entire year but he’s nowhere close to being ready for the NBA, ala Kyrie Irving. KI knows how to play point guard. Rivers only knows how to be a shoot first player
March 22nd, 2012 at 1:05 PM
Bakersfield Jam
lotta good music came from that area, thus the mascot Jam?
country music ftw
March 22nd, 2012 at 1:06 PM
He may well not be.
March 22nd, 2012 at 1:09 PM
If Duke wins 20 games in that shit conference and gets a 5/6 seed, Seth Greenberg is going to fucking kill Coach K.
March 22nd, 2012 at 1:09 PM
UNC probably loses 4 players total. With that being said, the players coming in next year for state and for the heels is probably a wash, or a slight edge to state. People are forgetting that Strickland and McDonald will be back for the heels, and they are in play for some of the UCONN transfers…
March 22nd, 2012 at 1:10 PM
Plumlee’s father (his name is “Perky”. No shit) is a lawyer, so I’m sure they have no problems making ends meet.
yes, all lawyers are rich. trey?
March 22nd, 2012 at 1:11 PM

link?

Maybe so, but not by much…this discussion would be even better if Herschel didn’t go to the USFL and Bo didn’t get hurt
or maybe if we saw herschel play baseball. bo>deion>herschel, accomplishments in multiple major pro sports. no bobfuckingsledding does not count
March 22nd, 2012 at 1:15 PM
all lawyers are rich.
link?
yeah dewar, link?
March 22nd, 2012 at 1:17 PM
They won’t get immediate eligibility hardship waivers though will they?
March 22nd, 2012 at 1:17 PM
I’d hire a dead Coach K before I’d hire Greenberg.
March 22nd, 2012 at 1:17 PM
Anything I can do to help.
March 22nd, 2012 at 1:19 PM
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Nice.
March 22nd, 2012 at 1:19 PM
If UConn’s postseason suspension stands, any transfers will be able to play right away.
March 22nd, 2012 at 1:19 PM
If the rule is the same for basketball and football, then the postseason ban would allow 2012-13 seniors to transfer with no penalty, I believe.
March 22nd, 2012 at 1:22 PM
Completely forgot about the postseason ban component, durr.
I wonder how UConn’s inevitable appeal impacts that.
March 22nd, 2012 at 1:25 PM
assuming the ban stands (don’t see why it won’t), the UCONN players are pretty much the most coveted transfers in some time. Oriakhi could be a great fit in CH next year, and they have a scholarship or two to burn for a year.
March 22nd, 2012 at 1:28 PM
I’m not lucky enough to see UCONN die as a program, that’s the only reason I am worried about it.
March 22nd, 2012 at 1:30 PM
This has to be a joke, right?
March 22nd, 2012 at 1:46 PM
Yes, they will. Oriakhi can play immediately.
March 22nd, 2012 at 2:07 PM
He’ll be back. If you’re a junior, why wouldn’t you? They’ll tell him he won’t be drafted in the first round and needs to develop a post game.
March 22nd, 2012 at 2:33 PM
Suliamon is a Top 15 Player…Jordan and McDonalds All-American Why not use “Top 20″ in reference him?
March 22nd, 2012 at 3:08 PM
Wake, GT and UVA had top 15ish recruiting classes…ACC may be as wide open next year as it’s been in a long, long while.
