Former MLB No. 1 Overall Pick Matt Bush Arrested After Hitting Motorcyclist in Hit and Run DUI
Former Padres’ No. 1 overall pick Matt Bush is in some trouble. According to Florida Highway Patrol, the current Tampa Bay Ray hit a 72-year-old motorcyclist around 5pm Thursday evening in a Dodge SUV and then fled the scene. Bush had been drinking.
The motorcyclist was transported by Charlotte County EMS to Peace River Regional Medical Center for a MedStar helicopter to transport him to Lee Memorial Hospital Trauma Center.
“Literally the tire on the SUV ran over the driver’s head. Without the helmet, the gentleman would have been dead instantly,” said witness Scott Sugden.
Bush has been arrested and is charged with “fleeing the scene with serious injuries, driving with a suspended license with serious injuries, DUI with serious injuries and DUI with property damage.”
The 26-year-old’s career got off to a rough start and never recovered, due to problems with alcohol and injuries. Initially a shortstop, Bush was trying to make the Rays as a middle reliever. He was drafted ahead of Justin Verlander, Jared Weaver and Stephen Drew.

Seems like a good dude.

This shit pisses me off. This dude got a shitload of money up front. Why the hell is he driving in the first place? Hire a fucking driver. Especially if you’ve already had alcohol issues AND your license is suspended. Sorry, but at that point, you get what you deserve.

take a look at the No.1 overall picks throughout history…some interesting stories. the ones since 1990 are a mixed bag of successes….arod, chipper lead the 90s and since 2000, adrian, justin upton, josh hamilton, price, mauer.

So I guess there will now be three number one over all picks who wont’ ever make the majors…
Bush, Brian Taylor and that guy whatever his name was back in the 60′s who was taken before Reggie Jackson.

since 65, that’s not too shabby, but just making the show should not be the standard for overall no. 1s, i think we all agree. plus, Bush could still turn out like Josh Hamilton

No, Bush was a surprisingly light hitting shortstop to begin with, the hope being he might develop a touch more power once he switched to wooden bats, believe it or not. Imagine drafting a guy whose upside could be likened to Rich Aurilia. He was drafted first because the Padres hoped to save $1 million by drafting a local kid. He was never “can’t miss” and now no one misses him.

Assault, uh, hit it. The guy was a convenience pick more than anything.
