Video: Bob Knight Said “Kentucky” and We Can All Go Back to Ignoring the Bully Once Again
All, College Basketball, ESPN, Media Gossip/Musings, NCAA Tournament March 21st. 2012, 9:59am
Whew. Back to work, everybody! Now we just have to wait for ESPN to not renew Knight’s contract when it is up – apparently, he has one year left – and college basketball fans will finally be rid of Bully Knight, the worst person in college basketball.

Seems like reliable, unbiased reporting to me.

You scared him straight with that call.

Bully Knight, the worst person in college basketball.
I guess since Bruce Webber is currently jobless…
March 21st, 2012 at 10:09 AM
I enjoy his candid analysis when he does games. I hope his contract is renewed.
March 21st, 2012 at 10:10 AM
Yep. Guy who never cheated is the worst person. Makes sense.
March 21st, 2012 at 10:11 AM
the worst person in college basketball.
Scott Drew disagrees with this.
March 21st, 2012 at 10:11 AM
Question: How could the worst person not be Coach K and his boy fucking?
March 21st, 2012 at 10:12 AM
Everyone has an a different answer for worst person in college basketball. Interesting.
/not really
March 21st, 2012 at 10:12 AM
This would be a mistake. He is probably the best basketball brain they have. His on-air demeanor could obviously use some work…
March 21st, 2012 at 10:14 AM
i would lovce to see a sit down interview between you and bob knight, tbl. he would slap the shit out of you
March 21st, 2012 at 10:14 AM
This would be a mistake. He is probably the best basketball brain they have. MP
TBL is just wishing here. ESPN will have no problem renewing his contract if Knight still wants to mumble on TV while a game is going on.

I recall Carlton Dotson not being a great college basketball teammate.
Not sure about his phone etiquette with strangers though.
March 21st, 2012 at 10:16 AM
Yep. Guy who never cheated is the worst person. Makes sense.
Yeah, I don’t think he’s the worst. Man ran a pretty clean program for a number of years. Even The Wizard of Westwood was slightly tainted by Sam Gilbert’s shenanigans.
March 21st, 2012 at 10:17 AM
KC – Knight was a Norby hire. Norby is no longer running the show.
There’s a reason not one person at ESPn stuck up for Knight the last few days: Everyone hates him. He’s a prick

I gotta say…when you read things like this you begin to see why people found your Knight piece so frustrating.
/just saying
March 21st, 2012 at 10:20 AM
Get over it already. It does not matter if he calls Kentucky, well, Kentucky. Who cares if he is a prick. Hecreates ratings, this is why he will remain at ESPN. We know that you get obsessed with certain things (Jets, Sanchez, Lin) but this obsession has to stop.

the WORST? i dunno…for all knight’s bluster, he’s got a set of ethics that are pretty much unshakeable. coach cal, matta and all the other guys feeding into this pseudo-amateur meat market are far more disgusting.
March 21st, 2012 at 10:21 AM
This entire post needs a “/TrollBL” tag
March 21st, 2012 at 10:21 AM
If the right person deems that Bobby Knight’s presence is a good value proposition for the company, they’ll extend Knight’s contract. I wouldn’t get too hung up on the guy being hated.
March 21st, 2012 at 10:21 AM
What did he do???
He hung up on someone that had his number and he didn’t know who it was
what’s the big deal? stop trying to get people to feel sorry for you
March 21st, 2012 at 10:21 AM
I think we can all agree that Izzo is the best person in college basketball.

March 21st, 2012 at 10:23 AM

Digger/DickieV/etc.: Who?
March 21st, 2012 at 10:24 AM
The guy that Knight hates Calipari is the worst coach in college basketball.

March 21st, 2012 at 10:27 AM
Izzo would be near the bottom of the list for me. I used to respect him until what went down with the Branden Dawson recruitment. He has more in common with Calipari than people think. Dawson’s handlers turned his recruitment into a bidding war and MSU edged out Marquette.
March 21st, 2012 at 10:27 AM
so does Jim Calhoun.
What’s wrong with Calhoun?
I’ll let moleman take this. I believe he shares the same feelings I do towards Calhoun.

I don’t see how this is in any way related to whether or not ESPN renews his contract.
March 21st, 2012 at 10:29 AM
Meh. I saw some crap when he was recruiting JRich over a decade ago that was on par with pretty much every other coach in America.
March 21st, 2012 at 10:30 AM
TBL: hi, mike greenberg this is TBL.
greeny: hi!
TBL: wanna talk about sports?
greeny: uh…i only really follow the jets.

Ben pointed out the stupidness of Duffy’s post about the Broncos not reporting the Manning deal on Monday by saying that no contract had been agreed and that was why they hadn’t announced anything. TBL responded with “good luck finding an outlet that isn’t reporting the deal, by the way what do you do for a living, just curious.” Paraphrasing, but it was honestly one of the dumbest things he has ever said not just because it was a prickish bully move (things he slams Knight for, oddly enough) but because he completely missed the factual point of what Ben was saying, which was in fact a complete and quick takedown of a stupid post.

The non-stop Knight bashing by JMac and Duffy both on this site and twitter has reached obsession. It’s actually laughable, even by JMac standards. He must have actually thought that Knight would be nice after cold calling him and bringing up Kentucky right out of the gate.

I’ve been 2-3 times. Very hipster, though it has a wide variety of mixed drinks and a good craft beer selection. I’ve heard the food was good, but each time I’ve been there it’s been for a couple drinks. I would reccommend it.

It’s just luck man. I hit a nice shot, but I’m not any sort of good. I was actually looking around over the back of the green because I thought I flew it over… didn’t see it go in. I was pissed because I knew I hit a decent shot and I couldn’t find the ball. Playing partner found a nice little surprise at the bottom of the cup. Huzzah! 142 yards with an 8 iron. Got my name in the paper and a trophy. The whole shebang. Still got the ball on my dresser.

TBL, once again obsessed with making himself the story.
And color me shocked – shocked! – that other journos and reporters agree that what TBL did was reporting. I don’t disagree, either – real reporters cold call, all the time, I’m sure. What I find more amateurish is actually posting a transcript of, what I’d imagine, happens to real reporters on a pretty regular basis.

this is not a contest. Fudge Packer wins in a landslide. Why? Because he is just as insufferable, but has a thumbnail of the knowledge that Knight has.

Bob Knight is a reprehensible individual, but I would much rather listen to him talk basketball than any other analyst ESPN rolls out there. Including Jay Bilas.
March 21st, 2012 at 11:20 AM
Bob Knight is a reprehensible individual
seems a bit strong. he’s not out there getting DUI’s or beating his wife. He’s just a guy with a short fuse that’s not a fan of the younger crowd giving him backtalk and runs a tight ship. Or calling his cell phone.
March 21st, 2012 at 11:21 AM
Has there ever been a player who was on Knight-coached team who has said that they wouldn’t play for him if they had to do it all over again?
My guess is no, but I’m honestly wondering, I don’t know.
March 21st, 2012 at 11:23 AM
What I find more amateurish is actually posting a transcript of, what I’d imagine, happens to real reporters on a pretty regular basis.
i know i’m part of the problem with this thing continuing, but i can’t help it: it’s amatuerish to post the trabscript IF YOU ARE WRITING FOR A NEWSPAPER OR MAGAZINE that has traditional journalistic standards. this place does not, therefore, he can post what he wants without worrying about professional or amateur. you can argue that because tradtional places would not post that transcript, his posting of it is refreshing, unique–you can’t see it anywhere else. that’s not an endorsement, it’s an observation
March 21st, 2012 at 11:27 AM
Vez, a big part of the problem is that I’m quite sure TBL disagrees with pretty much everything you just said.
March 21st, 2012 at 11:29 AM
I would think that TBL would say they don’t have to follow the standards of the “old media” but have the same credibility. The former is correct, the latter is not.
March 21st, 2012 at 11:30 AM
Wooden. Legend. All others are second or worse.
March 21st, 2012 at 11:35 AM
my gripe is that in defense of posting the transcript TBL called himself a sportswriter. Calling yourself a sportswriter or journalist implies you consider yourself a professional, posting the transcript was not a move a professional would have done.

What about Neil Reed, the kid Knight allegedly choked?
March 21st, 2012 at 11:52 AM
we see eye to eye on it. the site has definitely changed a great deal over the years, commenters are great, most articles are great, interaction with the head honcho has seemingly taken on a more confrontational tone when it was more lighthearted and respectful on both sides.
March 21st, 2012 at 11:53 AM
This. I say that as a former journo who had to cold-call people all the time. Generally, if they were pissed and demanded to know how you got their number, and you wouldn’t tell them, and they hung up on you, you’d say something like they “declined to comment.” You didn’t inject the whole matter into the larger story.
But in this case, the larger story was JMac and his butthurt at being hung up on by an admittedly douchebag coach.
March 21st, 2012 at 11:55 AM
interaction with the head honcho has seemingly taken on a more confrontational tone when it was more lighthearted and respectful on both sides.
the empathetic side of me (the .5%), the part that makes me feel bad for shirts i haven’t worn in awhile, cringes whenever commenters are overly critical of the writers and eic here, but that doesn’t mean i disagree, i just don’t choose to join in. but i always compliment if in my opinion it’s warranted

I get all this, but I just don’t see how that could be construed as news-worthy. I just find the entire Knight phone call thing to be completely pointless and uninteresting. What gets me is that by posting it, he makes it seem like some important or insightful interaction/occurrence, which it is not. It’s just making the jilted “reporter” the focus of the story.

“…college basketball fans will finally be rid of Bully Knight, the worst person in college basketball.”
Personally, I find him a better color man than that lawyer from Charlotte whose jock everyone is on.

Well, yeah. And Bird’s a bad example. He did transfer from IU as a freshman (before practices even started) — but not because of Bob Knight. Bird later went on to say that, more than anybody, it was Kent Benson that made him want to leave.
But there were a number of IU players — including starters — who transferred on bad terms with the General. Luke Recker, Neil Reed, Jason Collier, Lawrence Funderburke, Billy Cunningham, etal.
I’m sure it was no picnic playing for the guy. He’s a Grade A jerk. But he does know his stuff, which is why I like him on ESPN.
