Sean Payton Suspended For a Full Year as the Saints Bounty Scandal Penalties Announced [UPDATE: Gregg Williams Also Suspended Indefinitely]
The NFL handed down its punishment for the New Orleans Saints’ bounty program. It was steep. Here are the penalties, according to Adam Schefter.
- Head Coach Sean Payton has been suspended for the full 2012 season;
- GM Mickey Loomis is suspended for 8 games and fined $500,000;
- The Saints organization is fined another $500,000, and loses a second round pick in 2012 and another second round pick in 2013 (the second rounder this year is their earliest because of the Ingram trade last year)
No announcement on Gregg Williams yet, as all these penalties relate to those currently tied to the New Orleans organization.
UPDATE: According to Chris Mortensen, Gregg Williams has been suspended indefinitely (a la Michael Vick) and his case will be reviewed again in 2013. In addition, He is also reporting Saints assistant Joe Vitt is also suspended 6 games and fined $100,000.

The Saints are getting all the credit now.

Does this effect Drew Brees?
They sucked when Payton was hurt last year.

A good life lesson: always be wary of those who wear visors.

Holy crap.
March 21st, 2012 at 12:55 PM
Quick, Washington Wizards front office, fire Randy Wittman! Nobody will notice!
March 21st, 2012 at 12:55 PM
No player suspensions?
March 21st, 2012 at 12:55 PM
He is suspended indefinitely, meaning at least a year, as his case will be reviewed again in 2013.
March 21st, 2012 at 12:56 PM
Glorious. Just Glorious.

I wonder when the GM’s suspension begins..

God-Dell doing work.
March 21st, 2012 at 12:58 PM
Quick, to the next post!
March 21st, 2012 at 12:58 PM
This is absolutely glorious. I have nothing else to say. Maybe Brees will want to come to Philly.
March 21st, 2012 at 12:58 PM
I’ll defer to Duffy for confirmation, I think that should be affect, not effect.

BREES TO THE BILLS! DO IT!

I’m surprised they didn’t lose more draft picks and that the Fines were that low.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:01 PM
Maybe Brees will want to come to Philly.
He’s too nice of a guy to go to a city like Philly.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:01 PM
You shouldn’t be, but he did some fine work here
So do the Saints just fire him or does he just prepare the team from home during this season and return to the sidelines in 2013?
March 21st, 2012 at 1:02 PM
wonder if he has any way to challenge the franchise tag at this point and seek free agency. he might have some grounds for it.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:03 PM
My co-worker just asked me the same thing my first instinct was to say they keep him. He’s a damn good play caller and if he’s there with Brees, they always have a shot to make the Super Bowl.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:03 PM
I’m surprised they didn’t lose more draft picks and that the Fines were that low.
The bulk of the punishment was the suspensions, which fall under the unprecedented scale.
Honestly, this is bullshit. Bellichick stole games and all he did was lose cash. I expected a suspension but a whole freakin’ year?
So who coaches the team now? Is the suspension for games only or is it all team activities?
March 21st, 2012 at 1:03 PM
Who gets the inevitable first lifetime ban from Goodell? Pacman and Marshall have gotta be the early favorites, with Sam Hurd and his mountain of blow as the darkhorse.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:04 PM
Drew Brees to the Niners!!!
/predicted here first
March 21st, 2012 at 1:04 PM
Roger is just the worst. If I’m Sean Peyton I’m in court tomorrow. You think you taking 5 million from me? Not happening.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:04 PM
wonder if he has any way to challenge the franchise tag at this point and seek free agency. he might have some grounds for it.
Not under the CBA he helped broker. He’s stuck for at least this year thanks to the franchise tag.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:04 PM
Babar,
that would be fucking hilarious. That team would be nearly unbeatable.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:05 PM
Can anyone check in with Vegas to see if the Jets Super Bowl odds just got worse?

My vote is Jerry Jones. Why not? Rog started with players, has moved on to coaches and executives. Next step: depose the owners.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:06 PM
PFT says the GM is suspended for 8 games. Is that even a punishment? How much involvement does the GM have on a game-to-game basis?
March 21st, 2012 at 1:06 PM
Payton has no chance. Saints were ordered to stop 3 years ago. They willfully ignored the mandate. You blew any chance of winning a lawsuit.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:07 PM
My co-worker just asked me the same thing my first instinct was to say they keep him. He’s a damn good play caller and if he’s there with Brees, they always have a shot to make the Super Bowl.
My guess is he stays, but it’s a big blow. Gregg Williams has to be let go by St. Louis, as I said they should have done weeks ago. I figured he was getting a significant suspension, and why keep him around when you can get someone else in to prep for draft and free agency? They’ve lost time as it is now.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:07 PM
PFT says the GM is suspended for 8 games. Is that even a punishment? How much involvement does the GM have on a game-to-game basis?
Also, how is this enforced (other than banning him from the facilities)? Do they just take away his phone?
March 21st, 2012 at 1:08 PM
PFT says the GM is suspended for 8 games. Is that even a punishment? How much involvement does the GM have on a game-to-game basis?
I guess it depends on if it involves dates that would precluded him from working during the draft and the preseason.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:08 PM
Wow! I didn’t think it would be this bad for the Saints. Gregg Williams, yes, but not the Saints and we are still awaiting the fines and suspensions for players.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:09 PM
A shit-ton when you consider all the injuries that happen and new players that need to be brought in and evaluated…plus the trade deadline is still oddly enough before midseason
March 21st, 2012 at 1:09 PM
I don’t really know if the coaches and staffs have their own union but if it’s anything like the NFLPA there is zero chance this suspension is lowered. The NFL owns their employees. That’s what you get for being cowards in CBA agreements, dickheads.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:10 PM
I’m guessing that this is the official end of the warm and fuzzy Saints bringing back the community theme after the storm? Oh well, at least they got a Super Bowl out of it. It would have really sucked had they done all this and had not won anything.
Classic would you sell your soul to the devil for a victory.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:11 PM
But yeah, not sure how you enforce something like this or keeping Payton from making formation suggestions to the interim staff…seems like Goodell should do the only reasonable thing and keep them imprisoned at NFL headquarters
March 21st, 2012 at 1:12 PM
Goodell needs to be stopped.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:12 PM
Back to the dregs with you Saints it will feel like home.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:14 PM
Vilma was the one reported to have added big $ to the bounties, right? He’s getting at least four games.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:15 PM

you’d think this kind of scenario would be ripe for a challenge by the players, especially if the owners retain Payton and Loomis rather than canning them and getting a new front office for the season.
otherwise, Brees is just going to sit out rather than play and that’s even worse for the league and the team.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:18 PM
Fuck the indignant Aints

That’s just it. Coaches and execs fall under NFL oversight but the players live under the CBA their union brokered for them. Again, this is one of those things they should have fought to have undone last year. They didn’t and now they’re stuck with it again.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:22 PM
Two 2nds, ouch.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:23 PM
yeah, because that bad attempt at a joke is applicable at all….
March 21st, 2012 at 1:26 PM
Been to the mountaintop. Nowhere else to go but down.
Take the time off, Sean. Come back wearing a slicked-back haircut, act like the Grim Reaper. Kick ass and chew gum.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:27 PM
Two 2nds, ouch.
Would likely have been our 1st this year, but that got traded to NE. So they go for 2 2nds — meaning Saints won’t get to draft till Round 3.
And it means my annual Draft Party might as well be cancelled as it’ll have as much excitement for me as a Glee watching party.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:27 PM
Right. My argument is that i would not be surprised to see a legal challenge to the franchise tag b/c of this. or maybe to avoid a legal battle the league tells the saints to field offers for brees and let him go if that’s what he wants.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:29 PM
Imagine being this poor bastard. You’re making LB coach money, and now you’re looking down the barrel of a six-figure fine and losing like 40% of your upcoming salary. Yikes.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:30 PM
Laying the groundwork for the 18 game season. They mention player safety too much.
“We don’t think there’s any danger in 2 more games, and you’ve seen our commitment to player safety.”
March 21st, 2012 at 1:33 PM
un-fucking-believable. this punishment has teeth.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:36 PM
Right. My argument is that i would not be surprised to see a legal challenge to the franchise tag b/c of this.
On what legal grounds can this be used to challenge a collectively-bargained clause? The players and owners agreed to the franchise tag. The agreement isn’t nullified because one player doesn’t like his situation.
or maybe to avoid a legal battle the league tells the saints to field offers for brees and let him go if that’s what he wants.
The league isn’t about to destroy the franchise tag for every team just to get Drew Brees to not present a lawsuit that has little chance of succeeding.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:47 PM
This is richly deserved. I just wish Benson had been banned as well.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:47 PM
Have to give Goodell credit on this one. Now when a James Harrison complains, all he has to do is point at New Orleans and keep it moving.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:47 PM
unless there’s specific language in the agreement pertaining to this situation i would not put it past a disgruntled player to challenge the franchise tag in the court of law.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:48 PM
Brees has said he will not sign the franchise contract.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:49 PM
Benson won’t fire him, because the next day he’d be on Jerry’s payroll.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:50 PM
Have to give Goodell credit on this one. Now when a James Harrison complains, all he has to do is point at New Orleans and keep it moving.
truth. these are prominent, white middle managers who got punished more severely than anybody else (except Mike Vick, who was in prison for nearly his whole suspension anyway). There’s no more talk of unfair practices in suspension. Unless they have Jonathon Vilma shot or something.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:51 PM
Makes a lot more sense than Manning. Niners’ system more like the Saints’ than the Colts’.
March 21st, 2012 at 1:54 PM
TBL: Hi, Deew, this is The Big Lead. I’m a sportswiter and new media blogger, and –
Brees: WHo gave you this number?
TBL: Er, some guy.
Brees: Oh, okay then. What can I help you with?
March 21st, 2012 at 2:00 PM
TBL: Hi Sean, this is The Big Lead. I just want to ask a few question
Lord Goodell: Are you one of the officially-sanctioned NFL sportswriters?
TBL: Uh…
Lord Goodell: I asked if you were one of the officially-sanctioned NFL sportswriters?
TBL: No….
Lord Goodell: Then, by the power vested in me, I hereby banish you to the Circle of Unlicensed, Unwashed and Unworthy Masses! May the Spirit of Howard Cossell have mercy upon your soul!!!

probably already mentioned but the severity is related to goodell’s project to make the game safer, hypocritical tho it may be
March 21st, 2012 at 2:33 PM
@drewbrees: “I am speechless. Sean Payton is a great man, coach, and mentor. The best there is. Need to hear an explanation for this.”
Guess he’s as shook by this.
March 21st, 2012 at 4:40 PM
When Belichick was caught and told to stop, he stopped. When the Saints were caught and told to stop, they didn’t. THAT’S why the NFL came down on them so hard.
