Ballin’: The Chicago Bulls Are 10-4 Without Derrick Rose This Season
Chicago 85, Orlando 59: The Bulls improved to 10-4 without Derrick Rose by embarrassing Orlando on the road. If the Magic hadn’t beaten the Bulls the last time around – in Chicago, with Rose – and this result had happened … does Dwight sign that extension? Orlando shot 4-for-20 on 3-pointers. No coach has ever gotten to 100 wins faster than Tom Thibodeau.
Philadelphia 105, Charlotte 80: A tuneup for Philly before an important 3-game stretch – vs the Knicks, vs the Celtics, at the Spurs. If they go 0-3, and if the Knicks continue … eh, not even worth getting excited about. I refuse to let the Knicks tease me anymore.
Cleveland 105, New Jersey 100: Quite a night for the Cavs’ first-round draft picks – Kyrie Irving had 26 points and seven assists and Tristan Thompson scored 27 points and collected 12 rebounds.
Boston 79, Atlanta 76: Jeff Teague is turning into an extremely poor man’s Russell Westbrook. Meanwhile, Boston is 24-21, just 1.5 games back of Philly.
Dallas 112, Denver 95: Double whammy – not only did the Nuggets get thumped at home, but Gallo the passing wizard fractured his thumb (non-shooting). He told the Denver Post, “I don’t know how long it’s going to be. It’s not going to be short. It’s a fracture. The doctor told me the fracture takes four weeks to heal. Hopefully I can put something on and play sooner than that.” Andre Miller injured his shoulder, too. Yes, there was some good news – Wilson Chandler returned to the lineup (13 points on 16 shots in 27 minutes.).

MVP!
March 20th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
Am I reading that correctly? 85-59?
March 20th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
They’re 38-10 overall, so they’re 28-6 with him.
/does math
.824 with him, .714 without him. Good headline.
March 20th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
I’m not really sure what to make of this. How do they function without him when they don’t really have a backup PG? Are they just that good? Is Rose not as important to them as I thought? Or have other guys stepped up and they’ve played inferior competition? It seems surprising, even if it’s just a total fluke.
March 20th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
Lucas-Mania.
March 20th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
While the Teague dunk was badass, you should have shown the wide-the-fuck-open three he air balled to send the game to OT.
March 20th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
And there’s my answer. They are just really good, either way.
/haven’t watched any NBA this year
//had no idea of Bulls overall record
///.824, wow
March 20th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
With Joe Johnson open on the wing, apparently.
March 20th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
When the Magic are bad, they’re really bad…some other examples
March 20th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
The Suns are 1-4 without Nash. I deduce that means Nash>Rose
March 20th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
Well, he was wide open. I can’t fault him for shooting it. I can, however, fault him for missing it horribly.
March 20th, 2012 at 11:45 AM

agree completely.
March 20th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
/ OT
If anyone needed any additional proof that Jemelle Hill is a moron, here it is.
March 20th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
Yeah but the way he’s talked about in some circles, you’d think they’d go 0-14 without him. Still think they’ll have the same problem as last year, they play so hard during the regular season they wont have the extra gear when they get to the playoffs.
March 20th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
Whoops, the curse of three links in a comment has me in moderation hell…just pointing out how the Magic aren’t stranger to the just terrible off night, they’re the weirdest team in sports
March 20th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
Yeah but the way he’s talked about in some circles, you’d think they’d go 0-14 without him.
yeah… the headline is stupid… but one of the arguments for rose winning the mvp last year was “look what he did with a mediocre team” blah blah blah… so I can kind of see what the EIC was getting at there.
March 20th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
Rose missing time could be a blessing if it means the other guys are more willing to take shots late in playoffs games this time around…I remain skeptical of Boozer though when the going gets tough but he’s been a nice player of late
March 20th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
It’s the same as last year. Nobody wants to get down and dirty with them in regular season games. Their warts will show come playoffs.
March 20th, 2012 at 11:52 AM
Watching the defense clamp down on every pass, every dribble, and every closeout was wildly impressive. If it wasn’t Dwight Howard, the Magic player wasn’t getting even a half decent look. Some highlights:
9 assists for the game.
35.3% field goal shooting WITH Howard, 28.6% without his attempts.
Magic score by quarter: 14, 19, 15, and 11.
Magic shot less than 50% from the line (5 of 11), EXCLUDING Howard (2 of 7).
March 20th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
If the Magic hadn’t beaten the Bulls the last time around – in Chicago, with Rose – and this result had happened … does Dwight sign that extension?
Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe (Mark Wahlberg).
Dwight was being a teenage girl. WHo knows what he would have done the day after if he’d been allowed.
And unless a miracle happens, I think Anthony Davis is Charlotte-bound.
March 20th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
More people should bring up last year’s playoffs in Ballin’ threads…new and interesting points made each and every day
March 20th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
Poor guy.
March 20th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
CJ Watson is a back-up PG. JL3 has a use. Mike James can play defense.
It’s all on Tom Thibodeau though. The Bulls are completely bought into Coach Thibs’ system. They play every game and every possession like it’s game 7 of the Finals. The current roster of players are the types of guys that Thibs needs to make his system work. I know there’s been comparisons to how this team tired of Scott Skiles but I just don’t see it happening with Tom. Especially guys like Luol Deng, Joakim Noah, Taj Gibson, Ronnie Brewer and the MVP.
Is there anyone that can challenge Thibs for CoY again this year? Meeting at 11 so I want to check back on that discussion.
March 20th, 2012 at 11:57 AM
If they’re going to have a legit post guy again I would appreciate it if you guys would let them go back to being the Charlotte Hornets. They made teal and purple look better than that color scheme had any business looking on paper.
March 20th, 2012 at 11:57 AM

lots of other teams suck

Only if the NBA lets us get back the Jazz moniker…and Davis films a Nike ad as the New Grandmamma.
March 20th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
Doug Collins two months ago maybe…and despite last night I think Stan Van Gundy has done a great job keeping that team afloat with all the Dwight shit, they’ve got the 6th best record in the league
March 20th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
I heard it mentioned that no coach had ever won COY twice consecutively and I can’t see how he doesn’t win this year. They are playing even better this year than last while missing a load of time from Rose, Deng, Hamilton, etc.
March 20th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
Wondering if the Bulls will choose to give Deng some extra maintenance time down the stretch here, too. That wrist got banged up against the Heat last week.
March 20th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
Rose missing time could be a blessing
getting healthy, fresher legs too
March 20th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
CoY is kinda meaningless (PJ only won it once) but I am curious on the discussion.
March 20th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
Gentry.
March 20th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
Isn’t more of a miracle if the worst team DOES get the top player in the NBA lottery?
March 20th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
I dont watch the Bulls much, are they better defensively without Rose?
March 20th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
If the Timberwolves finish out strong and get into the playoffs I’d vote Rick Adelman
March 20th, 2012 at 12:02 PM

he’s lucky they are mostly really young. this style might not wash with OGs….see skiles, scott and collins, doug
March 20th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
I wouldn’t read anything into this game. Orlando is a team that no one can figure out. They can beat anyone anywhere, and they can come out and have games like last night. Inscrutable team.
March 20th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
Thibs’ regular season system is awesome. Is Rose’s MVP the worst handed out since Malone’s in 97?
March 20th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
MP, please join me on Google chat, so we can discuss this.
/TBL’d
March 20th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
ADORABLE DINGO PUPS!!!
March 20th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
So you will also vote for Gentry in this scenario.
March 20th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
Dirk in ’07, first guy ever not to be able to receive his trophy before a second round game?
March 20th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
Still a 75% chance he ends up anywhere but Charlotte.
March 20th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
no mention of what mike woodson has done with the atlanta hawks yet?
March 20th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
I’d be more nervous if you hadn’t added “/TBL’d”
March 20th, 2012 at 12:07 PM
This is the first I’ve seen they are just a half game out…knew they’d won a few here and there but that is impressive considering their second unit is an NBDL team
March 20th, 2012 at 12:08 PM
Yes, I am shocked that no one has mentioned this yet.
March 20th, 2012 at 12:11 PM
Malone was great that year. You have to switch sports to find a worse one. Pudge Rodriguez over Pedro comes to mind.
March 20th, 2012 at 12:12 PM
Except that Jason chose Rose as the MVP because he was “the best player on the best team who guided the Bulls to 62 wins even though they were missing Boozer for 23 games and Noah for 34 games.”
March 20th, 2012 at 12:16 PM
I hate that I can’t hate them. It would be one thing if it was filled with dipshits like the Wizards but these guys actually play to and above their talent level and they are genuinely all nice guys…….. Assholes.
March 20th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
I can hate the Suns because of how they did Steve Kerr dirty
That said, beat the Heat
March 20th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
I thought that was Vitaly Potapenko at the beginning in that Teague video. Yesterday was a low scoring night…Celtics/Hawks were at 51-50 at the end of the 3rd.
March 20th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
Well the owner is certainly easy to hate. No denying that but to be fair this band of misfits could have mailed it in a long time ago. They were 12-19 not too long ago. Would have been easy then to just let it implode around them. But dammit if they don’t want to make me suffer another 13-14 pick in the draft again.
March 20th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
The Mavs won 67 games that year. No one can say he didn’t deserve it in the regular season. They just ran into a bad matchup with the Warriors.
March 20th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
TBL should cold-call Rose and ask him if his team is better without him.
March 20th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
The West bracket is starting too look like that year again. Would much rather be in the (1-8,4-5)(OKC,HOU,MEM,LAC) side than the (2-7,3-6)(LAL,SA,DAL,DEN) side.
March 20th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
I love that people in this thread acted like Rose played with this same team all last year. This year’s Bulls team may not beat the Heat in the playoffs (keep in mind the Heat also got a lot better), but they would absolutely crush last year’s Bulls team. Rose completely carried that team all season. Not necessary this year at all.
