Stats, History Say James Loney Has a Chance to be the 2012 Home Run Champ
James Loney’s home run totals the last five years:
2007: 15
2008: 13
2009: 13
2010: 10
2011: 12
Look out for Loney to explode this season, and perhaps even make a run at being the home run champ this year, say the historical stats. From Dave Fleming:
But…Loney’s career has paralleled Ted Kluszewski’s career for all five years he’s been in the major leagues. And Ted Kluszewski had a big uptick in homeruns in 1953, when he was twenty-eight years old:
Kluszewski transformed himself from a good, solid hitter, to one of the best hitters in the game. And the transformation wasn’t a fluke: in 1954, the Cincinnati 1B led the NL in homeruns and RBI’s, and finished fifth in the race for the batting title.
Could James Loney follow suit?
It’s a long shot, but the peripheral stats don’t suggest any abnormal luck in Loney’s 2011 successes. His batting average on balls in play was .309, which is in line with his .311 career mark. His walk rate was slightly down, but not out of sync with his career numbers. His strikeout rate decreased. It wasn’t Kemp: Loney wasn’t seeing more fastballs because his teammate was having a monster season.
In other words: there’s no clear indication that Loney’s success last year was attributable to anything except his own improvement. As far as I can tell, he just got better.
Make sure to grab Loney in fantasy this season! [Bill James Online]

Is this a typo or a nick name of Loney?
March 19th, 2012 at 5:44 PM
Unless you actually watch baseball more than the playoffs, stop writing about basebal

This is kind of odd.

This guy just took a while to get his cycles timed correctly.

This is a far cry from “Loney had decent numbers for five years, therefore expect him to hit eleventy-threeve home runs this season”.

your wager…the state of texas with a dollar sign next to it.

Wow, a lot of crap being flung. I’ll take the NL MVP (Kemp) over Loney any day. He won’t even be third on his own team.
March 19th, 2012 at 5:52 PM
Look out for Loney to explode this season,
so 16 home runs?
March 19th, 2012 at 5:53 PM
OK he might be third.

I’m still trying to figure out if JMac is being fatuous with this or if he is misunderstanding the post by Fleming.
March 19th, 2012 at 5:57 PM
He’s Wes Parker for the 21st century. Ty has it – 16 would be a lot for this guy.

If it was, you couldn’t comment.
AJ Burnett might have more home runs. If he stops bunting.

Depends on the use of this term…
Synonyms:
foolish – goofy – witless – idiotic
Are you leaning toward the first two? Or the second two?

Ok, I just read the Fleming article. It seems to me that Fleming is not saying that Loney is due for a huge 2012. On the contrary, he is doing a sort of thought experiment where he takes Loney’s career to date player who is most comparable and that happens to be Kluszewski before he hit his stride as an offensive player. His conclusion is that, though they were similar to this point and the possibility of Loney continuing to mirror Kluszewski’s numbers is there, there’s not a terribly high probability of it happening. Which is kind of a ‘no shit’ statement to make.
In short, this is the sort of baseball article you get in spring training when writers are waiting for something newsworthy to happen or for the season to actually begin.

/waits for Rus-, er, Irving Pankey, to come in and tell me I’m wrong.

Why didn’t J-Mac just call and ask Loney or Fleming?
March 19th, 2012 at 6:10 PM
Nice job. You really broke it down for us who aren’t stats-inclined.
March 19th, 2012 at 6:12 PM
Why didn’t J-Mac just call and ask Loney or Fleming?
According to byline at the end of the post, Dave Fleming lives in Wellington, New Zealand. Unless JMac has Vonage, I don’t think that’s a very cheap call to make.

Expense that shit!

Just heard Lisk on the radio. He did well. Of course, the first question asked of him was in regards to Bob Knight’s phone number.
/no such thing as bad publicity.

Knowing how much of an uproar Jason was over CBS potentially charging $3.99 for all the NCAA tournament basketball games via live stream and I think this wouldn’t sit well, either.

as a dodger fan, all i can really say is: you’re fucking crazy. if he gets to 15 i’d be shocked
March 19th, 2012 at 7:23 PM
What the fuck?
March 19th, 2012 at 7:32 PM
I saw this headline on twitter, and I am flat out amazed anyone can make this assertion. What a joke.
Oh and I’ll take Justin Upton, Mike Stanton, Votto, Bruce, Braun, Kemp, Tulo as all having better chances of being the HR champ in the NL.
March 19th, 2012 at 7:40 PM
does TBL have to publish a certain number of posts each day? cause throwing shit against the wall (like this post), makes me believe there’s a quota
March 19th, 2012 at 8:08 PM
What the fuck is this post? Seriously, what the fuck is this post?
March 19th, 2012 at 8:10 PM
When the season starts and Loney is on pace to hit 11 home runs, I’ll turn this post into a meme come hell or high water.
March 19th, 2012 at 8:56 PM
TBL is no better than ESPN.
For all the shit ESPN gets (rightfully so) for throwing shit against the wall and hoping something sticks, that is EXACTLY what TBL has turned into.
Rumors. Stupid ideas. Basically anything to cause controversy and get people talking. Its not better than most sports talk radio at this point and its sad, cuz this site used to have some really good information and views.
Outside of Lisk, nothing here is worth reading for any kind of sports information.
