Ryan Braun is Struggling in Spring Training, Which Means Nothing (Yet)
Ryan Braun, the reigning NL MVP who tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone last year, but escaped on a technicality last month, is off to a slow start in Spring Training. He’s 1-for-15 with five strikeouts.
Obviously, this means nothing. But the media did what it had to do, especially based on recent developments – they asked him about it.
“There’s never a quantity of at-bats in spring training that would concern me, ever,” he said. “Spring training’s never been result-oriented. It’s always been process-oriented. The process is certainly a little different this year, it’s an adjustment I’ll have to make.
“Beyond that, I’ve never put any value into stats in spring training.”
“If I go 0 for 50 in spring training, I’m 100 percent confident I’ll have success in the season. I’m serious. It’s just different. It’s a different intensity, it’s a different focus. It’s a different energy, enthusiasm when you play regular-season games. It just is.
“Of course I want to have success. You always want to have success. But it’s just different. When the regular season starts, it’s different.”
Braun is being booed every time he steps up to the plate in Spring Training. Nice job by the savvy fans. I’m contemplating getting tickets to a Brewers game against the Phillies, Mets or Yankees (rats, they don’t meet in Interleague play) just to boo Braun. [JS Online]

I’ll be at a Brewers/Giants game in SF in early May. I’ll be curious to see if the SF fans boo him since, you know, that would kind of be hypocritical.
March 19th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
I’m contemplating getting tickets to a Brewers game against the Phillies, Mets or Yankees just to boo Braun.
You realize the brewers and yankees don’t play in the same league, right? A simple google search would have told you that the brewers don’t play the yankees in NYC this year for interleague either. What a great piece of hackery here, TBL.
March 19th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
Wow, Lisk. I usually love your stats pieces, but this is fucking awful. HIgh school hack journalism shit. It sounds like TBL wrote it.

only a yankees fan would put any value in spring training stats for someone like braun.
spring training performance is only important for prospects lucky enough to receive an invite, players returning from injury, and FA signings trying to make the team. it’s just a month long practice for established players.
March 19th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
Spring Training stats mean absolutely nothing.
March 19th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
He did.
March 19th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
Keep in mind he used savvy to describe Kenny Williams before.

Mantis – glad you found the humor in it.
As for Braun … a post a week on him seems fair, no? Every two weeks?
March 19th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
Comes across as bitter imo.
2 Weeks.
March 19th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
How about when he has a few more than 15 spring training at bats?
March 19th, 2012 at 10:47 AM

That doesn’t get the clicks though, philly, and thus limits the guys “litany of options.” Also, Trolly McTible would actually have to follow the sport to write relevant posts on it.

I hope he fails miserably this year. Not as much as TBL, I don’t think, but I hope he has an absolutely horrendous season so that I can take pleasure in his misery.

Speaking of roids, reminds me of the brief blog I had in law school that I updated instead of paying attention in class. The premise was everytime Bonds hit a home run, something awful happened in the world and when he eventually broke Aaron’s record, the world would end. My theory was wrong I guess.

I admit, I’ll probably watch his progress more this year, because of no Fielder hitting behind him.

yep. braun is a bro-douche of the highest caliber, if you’re going to hate him, hate him for that.
March 19th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
Braun is going to struggle this year.
Why?
Because he no longer has a guy hitting .299 with 38 home runs behind him in the batting order protecting him.
Or, if you read this site a few months from now, because it will be undeniable proof that he was cheating.
March 19th, 2012 at 11:03 AM

March 19th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
Ryan Braun, smarter than I thought.
You don’t know how he’ll handle the media scrutiny thanks to the private test results being leaked, but losing Fielder shouldn’t hurt his production.

good for braun, he has a built-in excuse. there was concern here in chicago that brandon marshall would be punished by the NFL even if he was cleared in the latest incident, just because of his track record; the league doesn’t have to parallel the law.
if MLB thinks Braun got lucky with his technicality, couldn’t it punish anyway? the PA would HOOOOOWL

Protection is not significant.
But he’ll probably be worse than last year, simply due to the fact that he was a monster last year. He’s not that good. It takes a lot of luck to hit that well.
March 19th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
They’re seeking other measures. Legalities and whatnot. Looking forward to that following Braun around all season long. This guy will receive 15 questions in the locker room about where his head is at before he receives one about that slider in the 2nd inning he went the other way with.

The MLBPA isn’t a complete joke unlike the NFLPA, so no, not really. They’re not getting that arbitrator’s ruling overturned.
Braun may well have been cheating. But not having Fielder behind him would make a big impact on his performance no matter what drugs he was taking. It completely changes how teams can approach the Brewers.

That’s actually a sign that he probably failed one in the past. You don’t get tested that much normally. Unless he was exaggerating the 25 to seem more innocent (when in reality it raises a red flag).
March 19th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
Agreed, I’m fairly certain that Baseball prospectus & fangraphs have destroyed the myth of batter protection. Same as catcher ERA. Although the guy at BP who has going to revolutionized catching defensive metrics went to be part of the Astros FO.
March 19th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
25 over 3 years I think is what Braun said. I think that’s normal.
March 19th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
EIGHT TIMES A YEAR?
damn…i dont think NFL players get tested nearly that much.
March 19th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
I’m not listening to anyone who willingly works for the Astros front office. But if protection is a myth, fair enough. I still think his numbers will drop a bit due to the lineup being weaker, but whatever.
March 19th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
or, readers saw the Prince mention on the front page.
March 19th, 2012 at 11:18 AM
Because the NFL wants the players to be on steroids more than MLB does.
March 19th, 2012 at 11:18 AM
One thing I find puzzling… you would think Braun’s tiny shrunken head would be bigger from all the drug use.

March 19th, 2012 at 11:19 AM

March 19th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
This whole idea of batter protection not existing is new to me (sorry I am a bit behind on my baseball theory). Any links on that, sounds interesting. If so, Jeff Kent is gonna send that out to the HOF voters.
March 19th, 2012 at 11:20 AM
Hasn’t the lineup protection myth been somewhat debunked by the sabermetricians?
March 19th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
what league doesn’t want their players to be on steroids? that’s just bad business.
March 19th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
Depending on the guys in front of him and behind him, his RBIs and Runs numbers could certainly fluctuate… but you know how smart analysis ignores those when assessing an individual anyway.

March 19th, 2012 at 11:23 AM
His numbers will drop a small amount, however I feel it won’t be a huge drop off like others here think. He’s not going to drop 15 HR and go from a .330 to a .270 avg. And the Astros new GM was the former scouting director for the Cards who have one of the best farm systems in baseball. Astros are a long term project for sure.
/trying to cheer ms up a little
March 19th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
I find it hard to believe that Braun will see as many pitches to hit without a prolific slugger behind him. The frequency in fastballs will almost certainly decrease. Perhaps not enough to be statistically noticeable, but if you’re a reasonably intelligent pitcher, you have to know that you can lose a few to Braun or give up a walk if the hitter behind him isn’t as threatening.
I’ll leave now before there’s a pie chart with a parabola on it that debunks this.
March 19th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
Why would we got to the front page? There’s a reason we fought so hard for the Recent Comments when the site changed a few years ago.

March 19th, 2012 at 11:28 AM
This made me laugh. But the truth is plenty of folks have done plenty of work actually looking at the history of this (removing an important player from a lineup, in front of or behind a particular player).
And it’s not predictive. It’s a narrative, sure, and it makes sense intuitively. But there is no predictive value.
Good place to start. http://www.sabernomics.com/sabernomics/index.php/2004/09/the-protection-externality-it-doesnt-exist/

Bill James was the first to debunk the lineup protection myth. It should be in some of his books from the 80s, Scripty. I’ll try to find some links later today.
March 19th, 2012 at 11:30 AM
His stench of incompetence will stick around like the valet from Seinfeld.
As bad as Ed Wade was, he still put on us on the path towards rebuilding by trading Pence and Bourn for great prospects. Luhnow has a lot of work to do, but I actually blame Tim Purpura and Drayton McLane for the mess we’re in now far more than Ed Wade.
March 19th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
Is it intuitive?
If a pitcher knows the guy behind you sucks, you’ll get more walks. Well, you don’t make an out when you walk. That’s a good thing.
Even if you know the pitcher is going to throw you a meatball, you’ll make an out 70% of the time.
March 19th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
I’ll start w/ that one link above, thanks. That’s a pretty big change against convention. I was just thinking of how this changes my thoughts on a # of players, Jeff Kent being one.
March 19th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
If a pitcher knows the guy behind you sucks, you’ll get more walks. Well, you don’t make an out when you walk. That’s a good thing.
Cant this go both ways? So I really want to get the 8th guy in the Brewers lineup out so I can lead off the next inning pitching to the pitcher?
March 19th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
Opposite. You’ll see a team pitch around 8th guy to get to pitcher early and often.
March 19th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
We’re on the same page here. Was just trying to explain my point politely.
Unless the pitcher is Brandon Webb.
/RIP Brandon Webb
March 19th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
I think it’s intuitive from a “he’ll throw the ball on the corners or try to get you to fish for something more often than he might have otherwise” standpoint.
I would like to look at it more closely to see how much walks are affected, particularly with already selective hitters.
March 19th, 2012 at 11:50 AM
Opposite. You’ll see a team pitch around 8th guy to get to pitcher early and often.
Is that popular convention or theory? Is this the right move by theory since the batter will make an out 75% of the time (assuming a #8 batter his about .250)
