San Francisco Emerges as Third Team in the Peyton Manning Sweepstakes
According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, a third team has emerged to compete with the Denver Broncos and Tennessee Titans: the San Francisco 49ers. Manning worked out for Harbaugh. On Tuesday night, Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman watched Manning throw, and the next day they sent a doctor to give a physical.
Well played, San Francisco. You might recall that when the Manning Tour began, word leaked out that San Francisco wanted no part of Manning and that Alex Smith was their man. Smith is a free agent as well. Either way, the 49ers kept their interest under wraps, and coming out now, from someone like Mortensen who is connected with Manning news, means it is very real, and even if it goes south, indicates leverage in the Smith free agency negotiations that have not concluded.
Of course, I thought Manning to San Francisco made sense before all this began. Apparently, Harbaugh and the 49ers have been lurking and realized the same thing, and once they saw him throw, they are going to be in the bidding. If I’m Manning, that’s where I go.

oh yea.

This reeks of desperation

March 16th, 2012 at 2:51 PM
Why wouldn’t Houston make him an offer he couldn’t refuse?
March 16th, 2012 at 2:51 PM
All fucking day. They’d instantly be the best team in the NFL in my opinion.
March 16th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
$$
March 16th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
Schaub, Matt.
March 16th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
If I were Manning, I’d go to Houston. Terrible division. A. Johnson and some nice TE’s. Seems perfect.
March 16th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
so…NFC west is a good division? and vernon davis isn’t a nice TE?
March 16th, 2012 at 2:54 PM
Schaub, Matt.
Really? We’re protecting Matt Schaub’s feelings now? He’s got 1 year left on his deal.
$$
I don’t think Peyton’s in it for the $$.
March 16th, 2012 at 2:54 PM
Pathetic.
March 16th, 2012 at 2:55 PM
Why wouldn’t Houston make him an offer he couldn’t refuse?
Schaub, Matt.
That and cap space. Specifically the lack thereof.
March 16th, 2012 at 2:55 PM
o…NFC west is a good division? and vernon davis isn’t a nice TE?
Who are SF’s receivers? And the NFC West is better than Jacksonville, Indy and TN. Seattle and St. Louis should be respectable, and Arizona’s not Jacksonville or Indy bad.
March 16th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
Crown them SB champs now!
/ philly eagles 2011 preseason SB champs.
March 16th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
He may not be, but he isn’t taking 50% less and that’s probably what it would take.
March 16th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
I don’t think Peyton’s in it for the $$.
That may well be the case, but he’s still Peyton fucking Manning and will command a large salary. His agent and the player’s union wouldn’t be too keen on him taking a small 1 year deal.
March 16th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
That and cap space.
Start cutting people.
March 16th, 2012 at 2:57 PM
This reeks of desperation.
March 16th, 2012 at 2:57 PM
Start cutting people.
We already have. Including a starting offensive lineman.
March 16th, 2012 at 2:58 PM
Just throw Peyton out there with Andre Johnson 2 TE’s and and Arian Foster.
They’d still win that division!
/hyperbole
March 16th, 2012 at 2:58 PM
I don’t get why SF would want Manning. Smith won a playoff game for them!!

This reeks of desperation.
It’s like 49er fans are being slapped in the face.
March 16th, 2012 at 2:58 PM
Really desperate move by the 49ers here. Unbelievable.
March 16th, 2012 at 2:58 PM
I don’t think Peyton’s in it for the $$.
Among equivalent offers, he’s going to a team like SF. I think this is close. SF played it perfectly (didn’t do a tour of town, etc) and I don’t think it leaks unless the chances are very real.
March 16th, 2012 at 2:59 PM
I lol’d.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:00 PM
I heard they have a pretty good QB, some guy named Matt Schaub.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:00 PM

Weren’t they 8-8 two years ago? Last year their entire offense was injured. If Indy or Jacksonville finishes 8-8 next year I’ll eat my shoe.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:00 PM
The meme that is beginning to emerge is so awesome.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:00 PM
Randy Moss, Michael Crabtree, and Kyle Williams of fumbling fame (could be a good tiny slot guy that Peyton loves)
March 16th, 2012 at 3:00 PM
Damn. Beat me to it. Well done MP.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:01 PM
Joe Montana is being slapped in the face with this move.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:01 PM
While it’s not a great division, I would say it’s definitely on the upswing and gets a bum rap (that it’s rightfully earned). Better than the AFC West, AFC South easily. Cards and Seahawks are improving, Niners are very talented, and the Rams can’t get worse.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:03 PM
HA!
March 16th, 2012 at 3:03 PM
The meme that is beginning to emerge is so awesome.
I hate it. I’m going to go stick my head in the oven.

March 16th, 2012 at 3:03 PM
Cards have Kolb.
Seahawks have T-Jax
Rams have Bradford
/SF would run that shit
March 16th, 2012 at 3:04 PM
That, and I’m putting /options in every US Weekly-type post.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:04 PM
Manningham was just in so they’re looking at adding another and probably will iether through FA or the draft.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:05 PM
randy moss and crabtree. seattle and STL blow.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:05 PM
This is why I can only watch college basketball for one month a year: two and a half minutes in and the score of St. Bonaventure and Florida State is 2-0.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:05 PM
I heard they have a pretty good QB, some guy named Matt Schaub.
You mean Joe Flacco with better WR’s?
March 16th, 2012 at 3:05 PM
Texas doesn’t need a QB. Am I wrong in thinking that current-Manning will command more $$$ than Schaub? That being the case, I take Schaub b/c I know what I’ve got which is pretty solid and, until the injury, I’ve seen improvement. No way I pay more for current-Manning than Schaub if I’m Texas.
Denver is desperate for a QB and San Fran needs one. There’s a good argument for making a financial bet on unknown-Manning.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:06 PM
So Denver or Frisco? Hmmm….
March 16th, 2012 at 3:06 PM
Would Wallace be much help to the Niners with Peyton and Moss?
March 16th, 2012 at 3:06 PM
You mean Joe Flacco with better WR’s?
That’s both harsh and false.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:06 PM
what is SF’s cap number, do they have room to go out and add any other quality pieces?
March 16th, 2012 at 3:06 PM
I loved watching that Texas-Cincy game when Texas had 2 points 12 minutes into the game.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:07 PM
Cards have Kolb.
Seahawks have T-Jax
Rams have Bradford
Ok. Now do the AFC South!
March 16th, 2012 at 3:08 PM
schaub is way better than flolacco.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:08 PM
I’d but $100 on Cooper Manning to Denver.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
Ok. Now do the AFC South!
Indy has Painter (and allegedly Luck)
Tennessee has Locker/Hasselbeck
Jacksonville has the crabs…I mean Gabbert.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
randy moss and crabtree.
funny.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
I will accept SF or San Francisco.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:10 PM
Jacksonville has the crabs…I mean Gabbert.
And Henne!!!@1!1!
March 16th, 2012 at 3:10 PM
Andrew Luck
Jake Locker
Blaine Gabbert
March 16th, 2012 at 3:10 PM
Wait … what??
March 16th, 2012 at 3:10 PM
If he signs with the Niners I will have a raging hardon that I held onto him in my dynasty auction league.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:10 PM
Denver is desperate
Should have just stopped their.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
Indy – Luck
Titans – Hasselbeck
Jax – Henne

March 16th, 2012 at 3:12 PM

March 16th, 2012 at 3:12 PM
You don’t say?
March 16th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
My fingers must be much fatter than usual today.
No no, it was funnier the way you wrote it.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
I don’t get the joke.
Randy Moss’s 6 receptions in 8 games with the Titans would be the punchline. Or the 3 teams that didn’t want him 2 years ago.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:14 PM
One thing to note:
Manning won’t be able to run that amazing Statue play that Alex Smiff ran against the Aints in the playoffs
So it looks like Harbaugh will have to trim his playbook to cater to Manning
March 16th, 2012 at 3:14 PM
Thanks guys, but that was a rhetorical question.
You seem to have a habit of asking those in the least apparent way possible because your ‘rhetorical questions’ are often answered.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:15 PM
So was asking who the Niners receivers are also a rhetorical question?
March 16th, 2012 at 3:15 PM
Randy Moss’s 6 receptions in 8 games with the Titans would be the punchline. Or the 3 teams that didn’t want him 2 years ago.
But he was impressive running routes without pads and no defenders on him!
March 16th, 2012 at 3:15 PM
You seem to have a habit of asking those in the least apparent way possible because your ‘rhetorical questions’ are often answered.
Usually only by you though. I thought that one was pretty obvious.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:16 PM
So was asking who the Niners receivers are also a rhetorical question?
Yes. Was Spence’s question asking if the NFC West was good rhetorical too?
/round and round we go
March 16th, 2012 at 3:17 PM
So Denver or Frisco? Hmmm….
I will accept SF or San Francisco.
Too bad. Frisco is all I’m giving out.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:18 PM
that’s true, however, Alex Smith couldn’t make many of the throws or pre snap reads/changes that Manning makes.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
agree completely
March 16th, 2012 at 3:20 PM
Vernon Davis with Manning would make Dallas Clark look like he played pop warner. Clark was fine, but not anywhere near Davis, I don’t give a shit how many of the colts fans cry about it. Manning in SF would be fucking awesome, and fuck denver.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:20 PM
Usually only by you though. I thought that one was pretty obvious.
My cat’s breath smells like cat food.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:21 PM
I guess he could go the Jordan route and play with the RoughRiders.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:21 PM
I think he sincerely wanted to know.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:21 PM
Thanks guys, but that was a rhetorical question.
What did you just call me?
Reading this, reminded me of this.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
I wish Manning would have played for a team with a coach with some balls (Belicheck) instead of the cry babies he had during his stay in Indy. Also, I think the Polians where egomaniac’s and thought that they could fit anyone into their system and win. One name is all I need Rob Morris in a cover 2 fuck you Bill Polian.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
Who cares about the throws? The crazy wind may cripple Manning for all we know. Manning’s inability to move may end up being more of a handicap than Alex Smiff’s arm.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
I may be late as usual, but I’m reading Denver offered $60M over 5 years. Sounds like a lot to me and would assume SF would not be in that range? Maybe it’s back-loaded?
March 16th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
Anybody enjoying Creighton’s comeback?
March 16th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
manning gets rid of the ball so fast, he won’t be in the pocket long enough to make that too much of an issue. he knows where he’s going pre-snap and the ball’s out at the end of his drop. it’s why the colts annually ranked near the top of the league in terms of sacks given up…it sure as hell wasn’t that crap OL.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
$12M/year is nothing…Mike Klis just reported they are actually working off of his 5yr/$90M contract…
March 16th, 2012 at 3:28 PM
if you keep the same offense that relies on a QB’s legs to make up for the weaknesses in the offensive passing game with Alex Smith then it will definitely be a problem.
but like every successful team, they will have an offense crafted around Manning’s abilities.
so, i’m not sure why we’re arguing.
i think this whole thing is rhetorical.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:28 PM
SF also has a new stadium to sell. They’ll make it work.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:28 PM
Hell yeah.

I love this video. It’s not new, but I love it.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
I live in Indy and I would rather see him play in SF.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
it sure as hell wasn’t that crap OL.
Gregg Easterbrook can’t here you. He’s too busy writing yet another article about how Jeff Saturday was undrafted out of college and deserves 12 MVP trophies because of it.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
Agree completely.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
Dammit, here=hear.

I find this intriguing because exactly no one knows what Peyton Manning they are getting but most are willing to roll the dice that its the 2010 capable and durable Peyton we remember. Well except the Colts they’re betting its not the 2010 Manning.
March 16th, 2012 at 3:52 PM
I was being facetious about Harbaugh having to trim his playbook for Manning in the first place. I should have qualified that I guess.
