Desperate Denver is Flying to North Carolina to Watch Peyton Manning Throw Again
Peyton Manning was in Tennessee Thursday, and naturally, everyone thinks the Titans are suddenly the favorites to land the free agent QB. (Peyton wants to go back into the division he knows best! Probably also wants to stick it to Irsay.)
But wait!
Broncos brass is currently en route to Durham, North Carolina to watch Peyton Manning toss the pigskin around at Duke, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.
This move reeks of desperation. Wherever Peyton visits, there’s buzz he’ll sign there. So naturally, spending time in Tennessee – he went to college in Knoxville, ZOMG! – probably got Denver all nervous (not another season of Tebow! Noooooo!) so they decided to get to NC immediately in one last full court press attempt.
This has to be tough on Denver’s starting QB, Tim Tebow. The courtship of Manning is understandable, but flying across the country for one last shot? What’s next, a weepy John Elway press conference televised on ESPN begging Manning to come to Denver?
What a slap in the face to the most popular player on the team. He just won Denver a playoff game in historic fashion!
I don’t care who gets Peyton. I just don’t want it to be Denver. I want them stuck with the guy they don’t want.

TBL, care to explain why you think signing one of the all-time great QBs makes Denver “pathetic?”
March 16th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Wait what? You don’t care, but you do care?
Why?
March 16th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
My god you are so bitter that the Jets didn’t go after Manning.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Who fucking cares? This isn’t high school. This is a business. Just as you signed Lisk to improve the quality of your product, the Broncos hope to sign Manning to improve the quality of their product. The gap between Manning and Tebow is so vast that I’m stunned anyone can honestly argue it’s a bad move for Denver.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
And how is it desperation to do everything you possibly can to sign an all time great QB that may still be a great QB for a few years, especially when your current starting QB is not good?
March 16th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
I want them stuck with the guy they don’t want.
Here’s what I don’t get. They can trade Tebow. They can cut Tebow. There’s no reason they have to have him if they want to go in another direction.
It’s almost as if they don’t know what they want.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
This has to be tough on Denver’s starting QB, Tim Tebow
ha. yeah, getting put behind one of the greatest QB’s of all time on the depth chart after a 9-7 year must be rough. cry me a fucking river.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
Also, if they sign Manning and keep Tebow, maybe playing behind Manning for a couple years will really do wonders for Tebow’s game. Didn’t really work for Painter, but who knows?
March 16th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
What a slap in the face to the most popular player on the team.
this sentence is a slap in the face to intelligent people
March 16th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
I think this is a troll-tacular piece and TBL is laughing his ass off right now. No way he actually believes any of this.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
The last time there was so much interest in leathery skin being passed around Durham, Mike Nifong still had a job.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
If that’s true then I weep for this site.
I actually think he means everything written above, though.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
I don’t get this thinking. I mean, I get it, but what is he laughing at? Us calling him stupid?
March 16th, 2012 at 10:44 AM
as i’ve said before – he’s about to turn 36. new team. new system. tough schedule. coming off 3 neck procedures. hasn’t played since jan 2011. will he still be an all-time great?
at any rate, I hope he still arms the Broncos.
and I’m glad the Jets didn’t chase him.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
and I’m glad the Jets didn’t chase him.
/sniff. sniff.
anyone else smell bullshit in here?
March 16th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
Given the number of exclamation points in this post, I’m guessing it was either written by a 14 yr old girl or a soccer mom.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
Either way someone has to fly somewhere…who cares that the broncos are going to him?
March 16th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
lolz
March 16th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
The only teams that he would not automatically make better, even if he isn’t the same, are Green Bay, Pittsburgh, New Orleans, and New England.
Denver has an elite defense. They are a better offense away from being a legit contender. They are not a legit contender right now.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
I believe 100% of it. Why would i write something I don’t believe?
March 16th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
Denver is going to watch a potential $60 million investment practice to see if he’s healthy? Get Tebow the phone # to Gloria Allred ASAP.
Tebow is Charlie Murphy and Elway is Rick James at the China Club.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
Gotcha.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
Husker – I can’t WAIT until the Broncos struggle (if they get him). I’m telling you, that schedule is brutal.
You don’t think defenses want one last crack at the old man who beat them bad for years in Indy?
3 neck procedures?
Bounties will be off the charts.
It’s funny, too – i found myself rooting for Denver w/ Tebow.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
I will include Chicago on that list only because I think the Bears OLine would lead to Manning dying on the field.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
I think sometimes we just have a hard time believing some of the stuff you believe.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
as i’ve said before – he’s about to turn 36. new team. new system. tough schedule. coming off 3 neck procedures. hasn’t played since jan 2011. will he still be an all-time great?
But isn’t that the risk that every team courting him is facing? Not just the Broncos, but every team. The Niners would have been turning away from Alex Smith after his best year. The Titans drafted Jake Locker last year and are willing to shelve him for Manning. The Jets would have had to move Sanchez. The Cards still have Kolb and the Chiefs have Cassel and their contracts to figure out had they landed Manning.
The only team where there was no incumbent QB issues was Miami. But that’s off the table apparently.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
peyton’s the kind of player you act desperate for.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
I’m legitimately curious about where all your Broncos hate is coming from.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
not as funny as a “notre dame fan” rooting for michigan.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
Good call. That’s why I have Pittsburgh on there.
Such a pointless argument.
No shit. You’re rooting for Lin too. Because it drives narrative over quality sports, and narrative is what gets page views. Don’t act like you don’t understand what you’re doing.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
I’m on team-Tebow (as a viewer) but if I’m Denver, I’m desperate for a QB and I’m taking a shot with Manning.
I’m still shocked at the lack of movement from Seattle. Jackson’s almost as bad as Tebow and they appear to be sitting on their hands.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
this is an SEO-filler post. click$ = mawney.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
So if the schedule is so tough who’s to say st. tebow won’t also struggle. If I was Denver I would rather roll the dice with the qb hat has multiple MVP trophies on the mantle.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
We know you like Tebow. Hell, as a person I like Tebow. Seems like a stand up guy. However he makes Sanchez look like an All-Pro. That’s not being mean, that’s being honest. If you think the schedule is as tough as you say, Tebow at QB almost guarantees failure. There is certainly risk in Manning with his injury. No doubt about that, however the ceiling with Tebow is, what, 10-6? Tops? The ceiling with Manning is 14-2.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
.So if the schedule is so tough who’s to say st. tebow won’t also struggle. If I was Denver I would rather roll the dice with the qb hat has multiple MVP trophies on the mantle.
too much logic for this post. getouttahere.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
The only one out of that group I would stick with over Peyton is Smith, mainly because he’s underrated mobility wise and works well in that offense. The rest of them are horrible and if you have the chance to replace a bad QB (Sanchez, Tebow, Kolb, Henne, Locker/Hasselbeck, TJack) with one of the three best ever at the position, in the hope of making a run in the next three years, you’re a fucking moron to not try and shouldn’t be running an NFL team.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:56 AM

March 16th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
Husker, do you really think I’d write things I don’t believe? You think I’ve built up 6 yrs of credibility on this site so i could start flushing it down the tubes with writing garbage I don’t believe?
You really think I’d jeopardize some of the options i’m getting because of things I’ve done well on this site … just to write some “troll” piece that people might disagree with?
Come on, man. I firmly believe chasing Peyton Manning hard – for some teams – is a mistake. anyone who thinks we’re going to get the in-his-prime superstar Peyton Manning is dreaming. age. health. new team. new everything.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
Where’s Lisk … we need a comparison of predicted strength of schedule vs actual strength of schedule over the last 5-6 years.
My guess is that they’re not as close as one may think.
Net – SOS in the NFL is speculative and overrated.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
you shut your whore mouth!!
/pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease come “home” to Tennessee, Peyton
March 16th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
I don’t think anybody’s advocating they sign Manning, not get a better back-up QB and to ignore upgrading the offensive side of the roster.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
The only one out of that group I would stick with over Peyton is Smith, mainly because he’s underrated mobility wise and works well in that offense. No doubt. Point is that there’s only a few situations where the team getting Manning doesn’t have to reshuffle its roster around to make room for him. Denver is in no way any different/special because they’re courting Peyton and maybe making their starting QB a sullen bitch.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
Any team not named the Patriots, Packers, Saints, Giants, Steelers and maybe the Bears & Panthers should be trying to sign Manning. Manning is better than every other QB on any team right now, even if his neck is almost destroyed.
And the Broncos have a very good offensive line and with another solid O-line pick, they would be able to help Manning stay upright. Broncos would become a top 3 team in the AFC with Peyton.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
Well there’s a difference between throwing away credibility with garbage and just sensationalizing things.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
typical broncos.
great post and amen to this.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
in that case it’s best to leave the football topics to Lisk. you sound like a vindictive 15 year old with oddly misplaced anger in this post.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
not necessarily true…tebow had about 390 passing/rushing attempts compared to 580 for sanchez and they produced about the same number of touchdowns. plus, tebow had 8 total turnovers compared to 22 for sanchez.
tebow at QB doesn’t “almost guarantee failure.” if anything, it guarantees that you’ll stand more of a chance against more explosive teams since tebow’s offense dominates the ball. he was getting better as the season wore on and if he keeps improving as a thrower, he could change the game*.
*still would rather have cam
March 16th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
Nobody thinks that.
What they do think is that whatever Peyton still has in the tank is better than Tebow.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
Would Denver do any worse with manning than tebow? Probably not. Will they do better with Manning over Tebow? Probably. This isn’t hard.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
Lions?
March 16th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
Forgot the Giants, good call Mantis. Thought about Carolina, too, think Cam is a good fit for now anyway. Plus Manning would die a thousand deaths behind that line.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
I feel like this should be written in the past tense.
/clicks on Lin for MVP post.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
if the offensive personnel on that team are in-step and willing to cede control to him, why wouldn’t the production be on a similar level? it’s not like peyton’s football IQ has diminished and that’s what gave him his incredible advantage.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
No offense implied with the following comment, but are you a child?
March 16th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
You really think I’d jeopardize some of the options i’m getting because of things I’ve done well on this site
is one of these options a mobile site? aside from that, nobody cares about the options you’re getting.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
His neck is sound. The fusion worked. Cornerbacks and linebackers have come back from the same procedure to play at a high level. It’s the regaining of the arm strength that’s the issue, which is by all accounts coming along at a solid, much-improved pace.
Hell, anyone who watched Manning in 2009 and 2010 knows his deep ball had some serious issues at times. Just random flutterballs we’d never seen before. If anything, I think there’s a decent chance the Broncos will be getting a better version of Manning than we saw in 2009 and 2010. No one’s getting 2003 to 2007 Manning again. But to act like they’re getting some bum, or that the guy they’re kicking to the curb is good, is ridiculous.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
Green Bay, Pittsburgh, New Orleans, and New England.
bears
March 16th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
No kidding. The guy wasn’t exactly relying heavily on his athleticism.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:04 AM
agreed.
doubly agreed.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:04 AM
I believe you’re an outstanding blog business man that knows what he needs to do to generate traffic and increase revenue. tabloids do the same damn thing…the toe the line between facts, salacious rumors, and straight up conjecture all to sell their product. stop pretending you don’t do the same thing. you changed the way you write the post headlines because it’s more SEO-friendly! that’s a fucking business decision.
oh, and credibility is determined by the beholder, not by clicks.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:04 AM
Commenting on posts like this makes me feel like I’m a jobless loser in my mother’s basement. I see this and all the good feelings I get from talking about sports with ‘friends’ here goes away. I just feel pathetic and want to go be productive at work instead.
/main reason I’m not around as much anymore
March 16th, 2012 at 11:04 AM
Yeah, you could probably cross them off the list as well.
But would I want Manning in Eagles green over Vick? Any day of the fucking week. He wouldn’t put up with DeSean’s shit.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:05 AM
If denver should be “worried” about any team, it’s houston. How long does it take Peyton to say yes if they offer him the job, .04 seconds?
March 16th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
If McDaniels didn’t spend a 1st round pick on him, I’m guessing Fox and Co. would have cut him.
I think you made a pretty big leap here. Putting a couple of scouts (or even a front office suit) on a plane to Durham is only costing them a plane ticket. It’s good optics. It’s a far cry (pun intended) from having Elway begging him to come to Denver.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
nobody said he’d play like a bum. but this “14-2 ceiling” with Manning is hogwash. Pie-in-the-sky stuff.
by the time the season starts, the guy hasn’t played competitive football in 18 months. he’s had 3 neck procedures. of course his arm strength is going to be impacted (as everyone has been saying for weeks)
March 16th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
Maybe this is just semantics, but isn’t that why it’s called a “ceiling”?
March 16th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
of course his arm strength is going to be impacted (as everyone has been saying for weeks)
link? because everything I’ve read (weincsays the arm comes back stronger after this surgery if it heals correctly.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
I like the feisty TBL that tries to argue his side, even if/though I usually disagree.
I feel that he does believe what he’s writing in this case, and most cases.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
I’ve built up 6 yrs of credibility on this site so i could start flushing it down the tubes with writing garbage I don’t believe?
You really think I’d jeopardize some of the options i’m getting because of things I’ve done well on this site
I think these are two seperate areas. Let’s start with credibility. I think you are a very good entrepreneur and media instigator who gets converation moving. I really don’t think you have much credibility as a sports writer. Lisk has cred. IN SPADES. But he writes with facts as the basis for his posts. I think over the past 2 years people see a lot of sensational stuff on here and we understand the game, it’s a largely sensible group here of commenters, but popularity and credibility are different. I don’t think b/c a lot of commentors don’t think you’re Edward R. Murrow doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy the blog.
As for your options, best of luck. Nobody’s wishing you ill will. I think there’s obviously a variance in your percption. You’ve noted as such in the Bilas piece.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
no, Miz. you’ve changed.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
TBL, I love the site (obviously, as I’ve come here for years now) but spare the credibility stuff. You post pictures of athlete dong, scrub posts clean when you talk about picking off KKK members (not that I disagree with that opinion) and you then post blind items about which QB might or might not be gay. I don’t come here for credibility as I get news elsewhere. I come here to shoot the shit with internet friends and waste time during the day.
So to answer your question, yes, I do believe it would not be beneath you to have a good laugh with the guys at the office and get the over-sensitive commenters riled up by saying a Denver is pathetic for going after a GOAT candidate.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
Commenting on posts like this makes me feel like I’m a jobless loser in my mother’s basement. I see this and all the good feelings I get from talking about sports with ‘friends’ here goes away. I just feel pathetic and want to go be productive at work instead.

don’t get me wrong…i’d miss you, but why come on here and tell us this?
March 16th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
Me too, and I like the things that Vick has done (when he has played).
Fat Andy would never have Peyton. That would mean he would have to give up power over play calling and the offensive game plan and you and I both know that would never happen.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
Crushed.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:11 AM

Jeopardize? Unless you were aiming for a position in the Broncos Front Office, I think you’re dabbling in hyperbole.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
This is one of the least rational posts I’ve ever read on here, which is quite a statement when you think about it. The Broncos believe they have an opportunity to upgrade the most position on the field – how is is “desperate” to pursue that? Are you certain that Taylor Swift hasn’t hacked into your account? Tebow contributed, but he didn’t “win” anything, any more or less than Champ Bailey, Von Miller, Dumerville, etc. won. He simply lacks the basic mental and physical abilities to have long-term success in the NFL. He’s no more “special” than Kobb, Hasselback, Locker, etc. – it sucks to have your job shopped around, but if you’re a pro athlete, you put on your big boy pants and deal w/it. You should WANT Manning to sign here – then Tebow could go to the Jets and actually compete w/Sanchez.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
You’re one iota of anger away from saying “DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?!?!?
but seriously, you can admit your blinded by your Tebow love when evaluating the Manning to Broncos possiblity
March 16th, 2012 at 11:18 AM

I am certainly hoping Manning goes elsewhere. I have no vested interest in page views or anything like that, but I’d like to see the Tebow thing continue, as it’s something different.

Probably a silly question, but why is he throwing at Duke?
March 16th, 2012 at 11:23 AM
The world will always need puff pieces on media personalities.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
Cutcliffe is the head coach at Duke and he was Manning’s QB coach and I think OC while at Tennessee.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
I want to see Manning either in the AFC South (so he gets a shot at the Colts 2x/year) or in the AFC East (vs. Brady 2x/year).
I understand the sentiment people have with the Tebow story, but I think at the end of the day, the guy is not a long term answer at QB.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
It’s been real guys. I’m going to go shove my head in an oven.
Scripty said I suck as a sportswriter.
Enjoy the games!
March 16th, 2012 at 11:26 AM
I think one of his inner circle coaches there or something. I wish I could remember the specifics.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:26 AM
i don’t believe they are allowed to do official workouts in FA visits to teams in the new CBA, right?
that’s why Harbaugh threw to Randy Moss instead of Alex Smith, i think.

March 16th, 2012 at 11:28 AM
aw, poor baby. hope some of the options you are getting now are criticism free.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
If you think the Broncos looks desperate, you’ve obviously never held a job in sales.
And even if they were desperate, how can you blame them? Tim Fucking Tebow is their quarterback.
If they’d kept Alphonso Smith, things might be okay.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
Thanks for the Duke connection. I had just surmised that one of my least favorite athletes had some hidden affinity for Duke…which would have made total sense.
March 16th, 2012 at 11:30 AM
Pump the breaks, TBL. Getting a little hypersensitive if that’s all you’re taking away from Scripty’s comment.

If one more fuker says Denver has an elite defense Im gonna call my boy chuck norris. denvers defense consists of one freak running like a fukcing mad man barreling his way like a kamikaze. dont forget they didnt play a tough schedule. they were shredded by more teams then they shut down and thats a fact. the second shit im gonna flip on is they have a great oline that runs the ball awesome. fukc you they do. mcghee is their back ok they guy blows. they ran that cut shit that wont suffice if manning is back there. manning will have major issues behind this line. tebow is not and will not be elite but he did a hell of a job actually winning a playoff game for denver. you dikcs think its so easy. palmer no playoff wins, romo as many as tebow, the guy from atlanta and detroit so awesome but no fukcing playoff wins. denver is stupid doing this. just throw tebow back out there next year and draft weedon in rd 2. he can handle the tebow shit. when they start 1-6 you replace him with weedon and no one will say chit.

I think it’s because Smith is a free agent as well, so he can’t come in and throw for the Niners until he’s under contract again.

Seconded on the abortion part. For f’s sake TBL, seeing a guy who sat out all of last year do his primary function (throw the football) to ensure he can still do said function at an elite level isn’t desperate, it’s reasonable.
I just took a lap around the office to see if any higher ups were around before I went on a two hour lunch to watch the tourney. Was my move an act of desperation too?

Dude, this is just terrible.
They are flying across the country because they haven’t seen him workout yet. Nobody has. Manning said that he would work out for teams only after narrowing the list to a few finalists. It’s not a desperation move and probably played out like this….
Tom Condon – “Hey John, how’s that ex-cheerleader treating you? Well I’m calling to let you know that you guys are in Peyton’s final 2/3/4 and he’ll be in Carolina visiting with David Cutcliffe if you guys would like to see him workout”
John Elway – “Thanks Tom, I’ll round up the guys”
