Mario Williams Signs with the Buffalo Bills [UPDATE: $50 Million Guaranteed]
Mario Williams, the former No. 1 draft pick of the Houston Texans, will be announced as a Buffalo Bill at a 1:30 pm press conference, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.
It’s unclear yet just how much the Bills shelled out for Williams, but he should have an immediate impact on an awful defensive line. The Bills were near the bottom of the league in sacks last year with 29. They had just 27 sacks in 2010.
[UPDATE: Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reports that Williams got $50 million guaranteed from Buffalo, and the 6-year deal is the most lucrative contract for a defensive end in NFL history.]
[UPDATE: According to Albert Breer of the NFL Network, Williams will get $96 million over six years.]

Rick Peterson’s mullet in the right third of the screen is something to behold.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
He looks like a retarded Ian McShane.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
Good for them at least trying to make a splash, but they have a terrible QB, and iffy OL and no WRs worth a shit. They need to draft well and hope the Harvard dude can stop sucking.

March 15th, 2012 at 12:34 PM
M. Williams, K. Williams and M. Dareus is a pretty beastly DLine. Not sure what part was awful?
March 15th, 2012 at 12:34 PM
Was Fitzpatrick that bad after he signed that contract?
March 15th, 2012 at 12:34 PM
Just surreal. Can’t believe the Bills signed a top-tier free agent. Last big one was Takeo Spikes in ’03.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:34 PM
If Buffalo could get a tall downfield threat, it would make the WR group deeper. Stevie Dropson is not a #1 receiver. He needs to be in the slot
March 15th, 2012 at 12:35 PM
LBs/DBs stink, too. 6 wins?
March 15th, 2012 at 12:35 PM

March 15th, 2012 at 12:36 PM
Yeah I would say that Mario blowing out his knee then asking for a trade to an actual contender is the likely trajectory here, too. Good call.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:36 PM
Hopefully him and Merriman can lure others. I’d like to see them do well in that city
March 15th, 2012 at 12:36 PM
Exactly. Kyle Williams is a pro bowler, Marcel had a solid rookie season. Buffalo’s defensive backfield is an issue but their defensive line is not bad. It sure is better than the Jets defensive line overall.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:36 PM
Spending buckets of money working wonders for the Sabres, I’m sure this will be different.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:37 PM
“Suddenly, the Bills are loaded.”
March 15th, 2012 at 12:38 PM
I think it depends how much guaranteed money he can make and if his chronic knee issues will do well in the turf/cold of Buffalo.
They probably overpaid a bit but if your cap is managed you can have a few overpaid guys, especially in BUF where you need to do this to lure some UFAs. Every NFL team has a little dead money on the books.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:38 PM
TBL, did you watch the Bills other than the 2 games against the Jets? The safties are not an issue but the cornerbacks are. The linebackers aren’t terrible but they aren’t great. They’ll address that in the first round of the draft. Possibly the main LB from Bama
March 15th, 2012 at 12:38 PM
aaron maybin was…at least during his time on the bills.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:38 PM
Every NFL team has a little dead money on the books.
And save us your Gaines Adams comments.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
6-8 is the ceiling I would think. But you know what, as Bsanders said about Washington trading for RGIII, you can at least sell hope to the fan base. So there’s that.

March 15th, 2012 at 12:40 PM
Spence, correct. Maybin was a quitter here regardless of coaching staff improperly using personnel. fuck him and the jets
March 15th, 2012 at 12:40 PM
Bills’ D-backs struggled b/c the team had no pass rush whatsoever. 29 sacks, 10 of which came in one game against Wash.
Can’t wait to see the numbers, he unquestionably bent Buffalo over.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:40 PM
Even so, not the best sign they know what they’re doing.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
Well, they won 6 last year, so I’d say 7 to 9 wins depending on how the draft goes.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
Possibly the main LB from Bama
The guy who won the Outland weighed 270 at the combine. What scheme is BUF running? I think picking a LB in round 1 isnt the greatest unless he’s a superstar – like Aaron Curry (ha).
Bills need OL, right?
March 15th, 2012 at 12:41 PM

March 15th, 2012 at 12:42 PM

March 15th, 2012 at 12:43 PM
at least they’re doing something.
/at this point, i want to strangle mike holmgren with a garrote
//but not my good garrote, im saving that for a special occasion
March 15th, 2012 at 12:43 PM
Scripty, bills run a 3-4.
They could use some OL depth. When center Eric Wood went out with an injury last year, that shuffled everything up. If he can stay healthy, it will allow guys to remain at their natural guard and tackle spots. I am glad that the spots they don’t have to address are TE and RB. Bills need a CB, LB, and WR
March 15th, 2012 at 12:43 PM
Letang was concussed.
Honestly the worst things the Pens medical staff has done in years was let him come back in the Montreal game when he got his nose broken. Someone should have been fired for that.

Buffalo has the 10th pick this year, so there’s a chance they can get the OT from Iowa or the OT/OG from Georgia if they want that. They could also back down and land the corner from N. Alabama.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:45 PM
The Texans are fucking killing me!
March 15th, 2012 at 12:45 PM
Scripty, bills run a 3-4.
Okay then he’d make sense if value was proper. His bustability would be pretty low.

That sound you just heard was the rest of the AFC East QBs sharting their pants. This is such an awesome sports day:
1. NCAA Tourney begins
2. NFL FA signings
3. Dwight Howard and Deron Williams drama
4. Peyton Manning spooge-fest.

Mike Holmgren? The same guy that was relieved of his GM duties while coaching the Seahawks? Good luck with that.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:46 PM
I guess Rick Smith’s plan is to let all the core players walk and then rebuild themselves in to the shit-stain that they were.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:46 PM
You’re a Texans fan, right? You should be happy. The Texans didn’t need Williams. They can spend their money elsewhere.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:46 PM
They’re still shitty.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:46 PM
If Fred Jackson hadn’t broken his leg last year, the Bills would have won a couple more games. Unless the Dolphins improve drastically on offense, I see the Bills definitely getting that 3rd place spot.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:47 PM
The Bills ran a 3-4 last year but there switching to a 4-3 thats why they need him as an edge rusher so bad.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:48 PM
So are the Cubs but we keep talking about them when they makes moves
March 15th, 2012 at 12:49 PM
i am being patient…but don’t mistake patience with not caring that the browns aren’t even TRYING to land any free agents. it’s not like the browns couldn’t use a WR…you know, ONE OF THE SIXTY THOUSAND AVAILABLE RIGHT NOW.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:49 PM
oh yeah, forgot that the Wannstache wants the 4-3. I am very glad George Edwards is gone. he was a terrible coordinator

March 15th, 2012 at 12:49 PM
How can the Texans cut and/or not resign actual good players but still employ Jacoby Jones?
March 15th, 2012 at 12:49 PM
One of these things is not like the other.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:49 PM
Man, the Super Bowl was right there for the Texans last year but Schaub got hurt. Now they are already losing pieces. This is going to be interesting to see how they manage the roster turnover.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:49 PM
Husker, it’s progress from what they’ve done for the past 13 years
March 15th, 2012 at 12:50 PM
Do they have the money? I know ATL has no cap space at all, yet idiot radio show hosts have been bitching that they haven’t signed anyone yet. “We should go after Mario. What about keeping Lofton?” Hey idiots…they don’t have any fucking money!!
March 15th, 2012 at 12:50 PM
key word…and he aint the GM here, just the “president.”
March 15th, 2012 at 12:50 PM
they have the money.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:50 PM
You’re a Texans fan, right? You should be happy. The Texans didn’t need Williams. They can spend their money elsewhere.
Yes we played well without him last year. But I’m of the opinion that one of our breakout stars on defense last year, either Watt or Reed, are due for a let down year this year.
But yes, I’ll probably be mad about this only briefly. Mario had injury problems with his feet and a pectoral muscle injury is a pretty major deal to come back from. I’m not happy that we might lose part of our offensive line in the name of freeing up cap space for Williams (if that is in fact what Rick Smith was doing). But I guess if the Texans had to choose between re-signing Foster or Williams, they probably made the right choice in extending Foster.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:51 PM
it’s not like the browns couldn’t use a WR…you know, ONE OF THE SIXTY THOUSAND AVAILABLE RIGHT NOW.
Dont worry Spence. Once all the teams run out of cap space, Shurmur is going to have Heckert make an aggressive offer to Danny Amendola.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:51 PM
Williams was out for most of the year. The only player they lost that really matters is Winston. I still don’t get that, but I assume it was a cap issue.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:51 PM
Hope the Lions don’t lose Shaun Hill. But if they do, DO NOT REPLACE HIM WITH DAVID GARRARD.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:51 PM
who would have thought that Mike Holmgren was worse at football operations than a guy named Buddy Nix?
March 15th, 2012 at 12:52 PM
Well that does suck. I assume they plan on drafting a WR at 22 then, right?
/please tell me they’ll take Tannehill

how soon before irrational cowboy fans call for Kyle Orton?
March 15th, 2012 at 12:53 PM
How can the Texans cut and/or not resign actual good players but still employ Jacoby Jones?
This is the part I don’t get. We cut Eric Winston but hold on to Jacoby Jones? I know Winston was due a nice payday next year, but Jones should have been cut on general principle.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:53 PM
I thought Lisk went through the details and said the Fitzpatrick contract was okay? Starting QBs get a lot of money. Shit, look at that gay dude on the Jets.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:53 PM
if they take tannehill, and ive made this threat before but mean it now, my fandom is headed for free agency. frankly, have no idea what they’re planning on doing. i hope 4 claiborne and 22 floyd or they get a partner to trade down with.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:53 PM
Looks like they are also losing their best OG. Him and Winston were their best OL, which was the real strength on the team.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:54 PM
Houston is really in a no-win scenario in Williams vs. Foster. Either choice can be praised/damned.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:54 PM
[UPDATE: Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reports that Williams got $50 million guaranteed from Buffalo, and the 6-year deal is the most lucrative contract for a defensive end in NFL history.]
Kinda hard to turn down $50 million guaranteed.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:55 PM
Buffalo is a shithole, you’d have to pay me 20% more than the going market rate to live there, and that’s what Mario got. Good for him.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:55 PM
Eric Winston should have never been cut and they let Chris Myers walk. I didn’t care as much about Mario but you can’t let the core of your team go and then do nothing to replace them.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:55 PM
I don’t think Floyd will be there. Maybe you can chunky Alshon instead.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:56 PM
Shit, look at that gay dude on the Jets.
I’d hedge Bi.

March 15th, 2012 at 12:56 PM
Houston is really in a no-win scenario in Williams vs. Foster. Either choice can be praised/damned.
I think most rational Texans fans, if they stop and consider it, are glad that we chose Foster over Williams. If we had lost both, I’d be ready to beat Rick Smith with a sack full of nickels.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:56 PM
If you think Buffalo is a shithole, you’ve never lived in Syracuse or Albany
March 15th, 2012 at 12:57 PM
not saying Mario Williams will be easily replaceable in the draft, but they did well w/o him and can add some depth or take a flyer on a guy b/c the rest of the defense is good enough.
and as long as they still have andre johnson and arian foster they will be OK for a while.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:57 PM
now that was funny.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:57 PM
At this point, I could be talked into Trent at #4
March 15th, 2012 at 12:57 PM
First as some have pointed out the D-line isn’t exactly that awful. Consequently the immediate and implied large impact is probably not going to as immediate or large as expected. The same kind of statements were probably made after Peppers signed with the Bears and they kind of remained pretty average.
The underlying issue here is that we make these forecasts on the assumption that the signee is filling in at a spot that the team did not previously field. So M.Williams will make a great measurable impact if the the Bills were fielding defenses with one fewer DE however over K.Williams or Darues or whoever else they had its probably more like a marginal upgrade in the grand scheme of stopping offenses and winning.
NFL Defense has this unique property of being the most team-oriented unit in sports where the impact of one exceptional talent though positive is still muted.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:57 PM
Eric Winston should have never been cut and they let Chris Myers walk
Where did you see this about Myers? Last I read they were still trying to sign him.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:58 PM
Exactly. Get Michael Simon to fry up some pork belly and I bet you can Alshon to lower his initial contract demands.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:59 PM
or driven in that strange no man land on the NY State/Vermont border. That makes Buffalo look like the Emerald City.
March 15th, 2012 at 12:59 PM
I just don’t think drafting a RB that high makes sense. Trent is a beast, but I think I’d rather get the VT or Miami running back in the second round and take Claiborne at 4.
March 15th, 2012 at 1:00 PM
Re-signing Foster was a must. He was easily the MVP of the team last year. Mario has always been to hot/cold. He gets his sacks in bunches and never truly dominates. I just hate that they line is being torn apart.
March 15th, 2012 at 1:00 PM
With Thunder Cock moving on, I think Clev goes Richardson at 4.
March 15th, 2012 at 1:01 PM
I’ve been there a few times and I had no complaints. Good people.
March 15th, 2012 at 1:01 PM
I am off to celebrate this warm weather with a small bucket on the range. May you all go 16-0 in your brackets.
March 15th, 2012 at 1:01 PM
Sure, Buffalo isn’t dynamic as NYC, LA, Miami, etc. but it isn’t a terrible place to live unless you absolutely abhor winter. It’s nice in the spring and summer.
March 15th, 2012 at 1:02 PM
This. Or trade down. But I would take Claiborne in a cocaine heartbeat.
March 15th, 2012 at 1:03 PM
The NFL is all about passing and stopping the pass. You have Big Rape, Dalton and Flacco in your division and they want to throw the ball. You can get a RB later in the draft to be good enough. If Claiborne is as good as people think, you don’t pass on a shutdown corner.
March 15th, 2012 at 1:03 PM
I hope that they are still trying to sign him but he should have never gotten this far into free agency.
March 15th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
So if Peyton goes to the Titans. Hasselbeck’s a Brown right? Or are they sticking with Colt and drafting a QB in the 3rd round?
March 15th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
Anyone with half a brain who understands winning doesn’t necessarily equate to good QB as read from the book of Tebow knows you can’t find 5 QBs better than Romo and no Orton wouldn’t be one of them.
March 15th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
Reggie White 2.0? Best defensive player going to a nowhere place…
March 15th, 2012 at 1:07 PM
This. Or trade down. But I would take Claiborne in a cocaine heartbeat.
yeah. That’s what Dallas fans are now itchy about. Moving up to get Claiborne, or hoping Poe falls all the way to 14.
March 15th, 2012 at 1:08 PM
whatever the Browns do is bound to fail miserably. not a doubt in my mind.
March 15th, 2012 at 1:11 PM

March 15th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
By TBL’s standard, the only cities worth living in are wealthy cities. There are many people who enjoy living in smaller places, even if the economy isn’t great. Buffalo isn’t what it once was (650,000 at its peak) but it has a bunch of great colleges, passionate sports fans, proximity to Niagara Falls and Canada, and some of the friendliest people you’ll meet. I love visiting places like NYC, Boston, Toronto, & LA but i’d rather live year round in Buffalo. Some of us just aren’t cut out for huge city living

Buffalo has its problems like most places. If every place was NY, LA, or CHI those places wouldn’t be special. Leave the city bashing out of it. You want to bash that organization, there is a lot to go after.
March 15th, 2012 at 1:38 PM

March 15th, 2012 at 1:47 PM
Though for the record, Pittsburgh is one of those cities who saw their economy collapse way way way before everyone else, so when steel fell apart they rebuilt on hospitals and education, which are two of the more “recession proof” industries. Now there is the massive natural resources investment in the area. Basically the city was already well into bouncing back when everyone else was starting to fall.
March 15th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
Elmira, New York.
March 15th, 2012 at 1:50 PM
Pittsburgh is still an old city. Its livability is inflated by hipsters in Lawrenceville and the presence of the medical complex and CMU.
But the rest of the town is still rotting, the bus system is about to collapse, and they’re trying to double property taxes.
But hey it’s no Buffalo!
March 15th, 2012 at 1:51 PM
From buffalo, live in boston. Would move back to WNY in a minute. Problem there is lack of jobs. Underrated party town (esp. Compared to Boston and their Puritan drinking laws) and a great place to raise a family. For a guy like MW who is engaged and enjoys the outdoors, not a bad place. Mild weather this weekend helped.
March 15th, 2012 at 1:51 PM
Moleman, not just elmira…most of the southern tier is just bad. binghamton really sucks. I just consider it a restroom break on the way to philly. Only good thing about binghamton is having the only Sonic within a 300 mile radius of Syracuse.

I live in Lawrenceville, granted in the area where I’m more likely to get shot than offered a PBR, and that’s fine by me. It’s actually boosted more by Squirrel Hill, Fox Chapel, and other rich areas.
A lot of it is rotting. But a lot of that rot is being replaced. My block is the end of the gentrification in Lawrenceville, there’s about ten more to go after mine. Downtown they’re tearing down the abandoned buildings and putting up new skyscrapers.
The bus system is a mess but Corbett and the legislature under Pig Fucker Rendell make it impossible to save.

Execution, yes.
Content, no. Friday Night Lights actors = unwatchable.
March 15th, 2012 at 1:59 PM
More so than Jim Kelly? (Though I realize that wasn’t quite a free agent deal.)
March 15th, 2012 at 1:59 PM
Unwatchable

At least in Appalachia you have room to run when the zombies start after you.
March 15th, 2012 at 2:03 PM
However the Corning Glass Museum is fucking awesome.
March 15th, 2012 at 2:04 PM
Nada, there is plenty of rural space to run. There’s almost nothing between elmira and jamestown. A couple hundred miles of boring driving

99% of my family vacation destinations in my childhood: Elmira, Binghamton, Honeyoye.
Amazing I didn’t kill myself.
March 15th, 2012 at 2:07 PM
well, i’m glad there’s so much openmindedness here. john carter was fun as hell, 4 stars (for what it is supposed to be). now, would i have gone by myself? no. but i was happy i had an 11yo who was interested in it. i know nothing of FNL
March 15th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
Yeah I just don’t think I’m the target market for that movie. Granted I’m not sure what the target market is as it was apparently a really poorly marketed movie.
March 15th, 2012 at 2:10 PM
Mole, hearing that makes me happy for living in Batavia for 13 years. I at least was just 30 minutes between Buffalo and Rochester. Between syracuse and albany sucks as well. The Utica/Rome area blows dead goats and I cant wait to get the hell out of here

wife’s family has a dairy farm in mayfield. went there two summers ago. kids loved it–mud, livestock, barn cats, silo fire, slugs. stopped at hersheyworld on the way
March 15th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
Well you take a story called John Carter from Mars and name the movie John Carter, do not do a good job selling the trailer..and disney-fy it… Movie cost 250 million…made 30 in the US, 100 total worldwide. Bust…
Now thats what TBL calls a heist
March 15th, 2012 at 2:14 PM
The benefit of every summer being spent going between IL/IN and Upstate NY is that we got to stop at Gettysburg almost every summer and would hit Hershey up as well.
March 15th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
I’m not sure if Utica is hell, but it’s in the same zip.

i read all that business stuff, but i saw the movie and it was really entertaining. two different subjects
March 15th, 2012 at 2:20 PM
Vez, i remember you telling that. Crazy.
VR, ever since the air force base shut down in the 90s, the area has gone down hill. Ive been here 3 years and that is 3 years too long

‘Dacks > Finger Lakes > Catskills/Hudson Valley > Lake Effect Towns > West Chester > NYC >>> LI
March 15th, 2012 at 2:21 PM
Yeah based off the trailer I was shocked that it got a %50 on Rotten Tomatoes, which led me to believe it was a lot better than they made it look.
March 15th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
Multiply that by 100 and you have West Texas. When the zombie apocalyse comes, I’m heading for Midland. Or maybe Amarillo.
March 15th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
Genesee County, where cell phone signals go to die.
March 15th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
Know what is boring as shit? Massachusetts from the NY border til you get to Worcester. Then when you get to Worcester, you can do drugs and get shot
March 15th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
The southern tier is alright! I wouldn’t live there but great for getting away from the city for a weekend.
March 15th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
All Hail West Texas.
March 15th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
my persistence will get you to the theater and i will claim vistory when you report fun times
March 15th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
There’s something about movies that are too CGI-heavy that kills all the fun for me.
March 15th, 2012 at 2:25 PM
Have you ever been off the Mass Pike? The Berkshires are awesome.
This is like the people who say NJ is disgusting*, but the only time they’ve been in the state is on the Turnpike to Newark.
*I hate NJ for many reasons, but most of the state is really nice
March 15th, 2012 at 2:26 PM
Shit, growing up on the Gulf Coast, we’d see that two or three times every hurricane season.
March 15th, 2012 at 2:27 PM
Yeah Jersey gets a bad rap. Granted, the places that are bad really deserve the rap. Still I don’t think most people realize it has one of the highest median incomes in the country (I think tops until Maryland jumped them recently). Lots of nice places with money there.
March 15th, 2012 at 2:27 PM
Um, no. Winston was arguably their worst offensive lineman this past year. Routinely got beat on the edge by good pass rushers and led the OL in penalties. Their best OL is Duane Brown. Second most valuable is probably Chris Meyers. Quit making shit up.
March 15th, 2012 at 2:29 PM
We’re talking geography here, Cochese, pull it together.
March 15th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
I drive from buffalo to Boston all the time and my favorite part is between Albany and Springfield.
March 15th, 2012 at 2:32 PM
Plastic Lesley Visser looking pretty good today.
