The Magic Aren’t Dumb Enough to Keep Dwight Howard and Lose Him For Nothing, Are They?
I’m not going to waste your your time chronicling all the silly statements that have come out of Dwight Howard’s mouth in the last eight months regarding his future with the Magic. If Howard is asked about his future multiple times daily, of course he’s going to make regrettable comments. We can all agree he’s handled it poorly.
(The next star who goes through this might want to try repeating this, ad nauseum: “I’m working it out with the front office, we’ll let you know when we have something.”)
What’s dumbfounding is how Howard could say, after beating the Heat Tuesday night, ‘don’t trade me, let’s play this out.’
So when he leaves Orlando for Dallas or New Jersey in July – it’s increasingly looking like the Nets – all you’ll hear from the Magic and fans in Orlando is: “But you told us not to trade you, why would you do us dirty like that?”
(I wonder if Howard is seeing what’s happening to Carmelo Anthony with the Knicks – we’ll get to that later – and doesn’t want to run the risk of blowing up a team’s nucleus, then getting all the blame when that hollowed-out team struggles.)
Remember how Cleveland turned on LeBron angrily after he bolted for South Beach? Dwight Howard’s about to do the same thing to Orlando – without a TV special.
And Howard might win even bigger than LeBron did. If the Magic do the unthinkable and don’t trade Howard in the next 48 hours, the Nets don’t have to trade away Brook Lopez or draft picks. In a perfect world, here’s New Jersey’s starting lineup next year:
PG – Deron Williams
SG – Marshon Brooks
SF – DeShawn Stevenson/Gerald Green
PF – Kris Humphries/Brook Lopez
C – Dwight Howard
Go out and find a defensive-minded wing (a Tony Allen-type) to defend LeBron/Wade/Melo in the playoffs. Boom. Title contender. I know you hate Kris Humphries, but he’s averaging 13-10. If he asks for too much money – and he might; he’s certainly earning it – then roll with Brook Lopez at PF, even though he doesn’t rebound well, which is all you really need from him.
Orlando is screwed.

I hope they are. I want to see an NBA player turn down $35 mil. And not someone with a global ‘brand’.
March 14th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
Could Orlando possibly resign and trade him to another team?
March 14th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
Say the Magic did keep him and amnestied Turkoglu next year. What’s their cap situation look like and who could they sign via free agency that would make Dwight want to stick around? Ray Allen?
March 14th, 2012 at 11:52 AM
I thought Deron Williams was a lock to Dallas?
March 14th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
Yeah, I want to see Howard leave $35MM or so on the table. Because the only way the Magic are going to be empty handed is if he leaves that money on the table and doesn’t work out a sign and trade. Ain’t gonna happen.
I hope Orlando plays hardball and refuses to do a sign and trade so he can get max dollars. Unless he intends to sign with the Rockets, in which case I’ll be happy.
Local talk in Houston is that the Rockets are going to go hard after Carmelo to see if there is any possibility of prying him from the Knicks now that he’s supposedly asked to be traded.

like the cavs did with Lebron? fucking dan gilbert.
March 14th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
now that he’s supposedly asked to be traded.
He has?! Link please.
March 14th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
How tired is everyone else on the Magic of hearing about Howard? Every other player on the team must resent him (fairly or not) so much right now.
March 14th, 2012 at 11:58 AM
This $35 million number is fiction. It’s a few million per year over 4 years.
He’ll get a 5th year eventually.
March 14th, 2012 at 11:58 AM

I can’t be the only one who thinks what Howard is doing is a bigger dick move than what Lebron did, can I?
March 14th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
If Howard isn’t traded and ends up on a team next year with DWill, I’m guessing it will be in Dallas not NJ.
March 14th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
He’s signing in Los Angeles this summer. Sticking with that.
/until I change it later
March 14th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
You’re not stupider than a monkey, are you?
Well, how big’a monkey?
March 14th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
I know the argument that Orlando can offer him an extra $30 million isn’t exactly accurate because it includes an additional year. However, it has been pretty rare for NBA players to turn down that “extra” money, right?
March 14th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
Yes, if by Cleveland you mean Dan Gilbert.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
Could Orlando possibly resign and trade him to another team?
In theory, yes. But it’s likely that he would just sign and take the lower number to pick a situation that wouldn’t have him struggling on a mediocre team.
As for the Magic, they’ve shown they’re just as fearful of what trading him/not trading him would do to them. So they haven’t made up their minds yet. That’s dangerous. Either trade him and live with the rebuilding or don’t trade him, make a run this season and pray you can rebuild with nothing for him.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
To the team, it is, to the franchise, it’s not.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
Alternatively, they could also simply refer the inquiry to their agent….whom they are paying money to to deal with such matters.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
Local talk in Houston is that the Rockets are going to go hard after Carmelo to see if there is any possibility of prying him from the Knicks now that he’s supposedly asked to be traded.
Why the hell would they do that? Carmelo and Kevin McHale?
And doesn’t LaLa Vasquez have veto power?
March 14th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
It’s close. He’s willingly cast a black cloud on the entire season with no remorse by not only making it known he doesn’t want to be there, but that he only accept trades to three(?) teams.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
I’ll own up….I had no idea who he was before the whole Kardashian thing.
Now, I’ve seen him play about 5 times since then, and he’s not as terrible as I thought he’d be.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:07 PM
I do not hate him. Not everyone is as beholden to US Weekly as you are.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:08 PM
Are they going to amnesty Kobe?
March 14th, 2012 at 12:09 PM
Why do we hate Kris? Because of Kim Kardashian? I thought to the non-TMZ crowds of the world, he was actually the sympathetic figure while KK is just pathetic? I mean, she’s fun to look at and all, but she’s as useless as tits on a boy pig.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:10 PM
Goldenstate should use their new piece to trade for Dwight. Lee/Bogut/Biedrins for Dwight/Turkey
March 14th, 2012 at 12:10 PM
Why do we hate Kris?
I disliked him before the Kardashian thing… only because he was a smug asshole in college.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:16 PM
Dwight Howard’s about to do the same thing to Orlando – without a TV special.
and thats is why he wont get the backlash leShitstain did/does. how are people still unable to grasp this?
March 14th, 2012 at 12:16 PM
TBL isn’t beholden to anybody or anything. It says so in the banner at the top of the…
Nevermind.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
also, please no carmelo to the rockets. we already tried that with tracy mcgrady, and it didnt work.

One TV special is a lot better than a season’s worth of post game press conferences of places he’d rather be playing than orlando and “I dunno man, I guess you’ll have to roll the dice with me!”
March 14th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
The magic aren’t dumb enough to trade him for the garbage from the nets.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:21 PM

those post game pressers dont seem to be getting the national press the game show lebron did.
rather have the pressers anyways.

What about this trade? With Orlando getting the Nets’ first rounder and the Hornets getting a 2nd rounder from either the Nets or the Magic?
March 14th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
D-Ho living up to his nickname
March 14th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
I forgot where I heard it, but somebody made a good point about Orlando and free agents. If the Magic are dumb enough to let Dwight walk and are smart enough to get rid of Turkoglu’s awful contract, it’s not like FA’s don’t want to play in Florida. Once upon a time, the Magic did sign Grant Hill AND Tracy McGrady in the same offseason when both were considered to be elite players in the league.
/I know,I know… That was a long time ago
//And Otis Smith wasn’t the GM
/// But still
March 14th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
Great vote of confidence the Magic have given Van Gundy and his staff. Unfuckingreal. Give a kid in his 20s the nod on keeping/firing the coach and GM. They deserve all the shit sandwiches they will be eating soon.

If everyone knows Dwight wants to end up with the Nets then I don’t think the Magic have too much of a choice here. Other teams are not going to offer them much since they know its a rent-a-Dwight situation. The Nets are also equally unlikely to offer much since they know they there’s a good chance they end up with him in a few months anyway.
So whats the big difference between losing Dwight for nothing vs losing him for someone else’s scrubs? Not much at all. Average NBA players are a dime a dozen.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:23 PM

why would you not want a Top-5 NBA player?

1. LeBron

because carmelo reminds me of tmac when he was a top 5 player, and that is not a good thing.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:26 PM
why would you not want a Top-5 NBA player?
This, Carmelo is not. Pass that jay, Ty-weed.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
Agreed that you should form opinions based off the national press narrative.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
i know carmelo is great offensively, and i guess i woundnt be too mad if we got him. i have just seen us get a top 5 OFFENSIVE talent before and it failed.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
By the way, doesn’t look like there will be any Melo trades:

Sorry, my bad. -3 Internet points for me.
Carmelo is not
He’s at best Top 10 — when he wants to be.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:30 PM
McGrady had a bad back and knees that was more the issue than some kind of a curse that follows top 5 offensive players in Houston
March 14th, 2012 at 12:31 PM
This, Carmelo is not. Pass that jay, Ty-weed.
Slow down Cochise, I was referring to a claim by the illustrious commenter Darrell that not only was Carmelo Top-5 but better than Durant…
March 14th, 2012 at 12:33 PM
Already used the amnesty on Arenas. Also, if they resign Dwight, they will be out of cap room (Even without him they are locking in to about $45.5 mil next year) I’m not sure how the new exceptions work, so they could have the possibility of a mid-level.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:33 PM
I can guarantee that no player* on the Knicks has a rift with Mike D’antoni. They guy hardly makes players work in practice and lets them roam freely on the court in games.
*except maybe a player that wants to win.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:34 PM
That was some of the best stuff this site has recently seen.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:38 PM
Dumb, stubborn, same difference.
If he could hit a FT last nights game wouldnt have even been close, guy can’t even touch the ball in the final 5 minutes.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:38 PM
McGrady had a bad back and knees that was more the issue than some kind of a curse that follows top 5 offensive players in Houston
for the first few years he was there, i dont think back and knees were the issue. i think it was tmac’s stubbed vaheen that was the issue.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:40 PM
Alternatively, without his defense…or offense other than FTs for that matter, the game also would not have been close.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
Some big man in the NBA needs to step up and Rick Barry that shit.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:54 PM
Shoulda drafted Okafor – problem solved!
March 14th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
Actually the Cavs did trade Lebron to MIA. And I think most people nationally (that did turn on him) turned on LBJ with the 7-rings show, not just The Decision. But in CLE the people here were pretty okay with him testing free agency, shit went sour with the fake elbow/quitting in games 5-6.
The main issue is if Dwight Howard leaves, the bulk of that team was built around him (shooters), and they’d have to re-calibrate the roster afterwards. They’d be better off unloading everybody but Dwight at the deadline to prepare themselves for the post-Howard era.
