Mike D’Antoni Resigned Because Carmelo Anthony Would Never Play the Coach’s Style
If there was every any question whether or not to blame Carmelo Anthony for Mike D’Antoni’s resignation (and failure) we have your answer. According to Kevin Clark of the Wall Street Journal, Melo’s return over the last few games made it clear that the pairing would not work out.
D’Antoni realized over the course of the last few weeks that Anthony was never going to play his style of play, a person familiar with the matter said. The coach met with Knicks interim general manager Glen Grunwald to relay his concerns, and proceeded to tell Knicks owner James Dolan of his feelings before determining the situation wouldn’t work.
And thus, the Knicks turn to Mike Woodson. And then… Isaiah Thomas? Phil Jackson? How many names can be rumored for one job in 24 hours? My guess would be all of the names.

Who the hell would want to coach such a dysfunctional team/ownership?
PJ’s not walking through that door – the man is having knee surgery and is content with fishing and whatever else he does.
March 14th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
Im glad he helped Cuse win a title but was glad to see him go. He’s such a clueless dickhead
March 14th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
And then… Isaiah Thomas?
Please tell me that’s in play. Please, please, please let that happen.
March 14th, 2012 at 3:51 PM
PJ’s not walking through that door
Carlesimo?!?
March 14th, 2012 at 3:52 PM
Furious Styles > * styles.
March 14th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
Can somebody explain to me the specifics of why Carmelo can’t operate in this system?
He’s averaging 21.3 ppg & shooting like a dickhead. How is that a system problem?
March 14th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
Not quite.
March 14th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
Quinn Buckner, but only if he gets to make personnel decisions too.
March 14th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
Larry Brown?
March 14th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
what he said.
March 14th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
Carlesimo?!?
Not quite.
too bad. i’d love to see him get choked again.
March 14th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
Agree completely. It’s all cryptic now.
March 14th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
You know what would be awesomerest of all? What if MJ got an ownership stake to be president and then he hired Isaiah Thomas to coach
March 14th, 2012 at 3:58 PM
This is a lot of coverage for an 18-24 team.

March 14th, 2012 at 3:59 PM
Looks like Dwight is going to stay in Orlando through next year.
March 14th, 2012 at 3:59 PM
Or if MJ made his inevitable foray into coaching.
Just kidding that would require actually having some sort of involvement with the franchise.
March 14th, 2012 at 3:59 PM
That makes no sense.
March 14th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
I’m liking this new meme.
March 14th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
I’m ready for the return of the player-coach.
March 14th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
This would be FANTASTIC. He would bench Melo’s ass if he didn’t cooperate. I want that even more than Zeke.
March 14th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
bring in Don Nelson.
/Nellyball FTW
March 14th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
didn’t Next Town Brown coach the Knicks recently?
March 14th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
How about Super Bowl MVP Larry Brown?
March 14th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
Didn’t Melo want to go to NY partly b/c of D’Antoni’s style?
March 14th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
I pray that Jim Dolan does the right thing and pioneers the “player-coach” practice if he can’t give us what we want and hire Isaish Thomas.
March 14th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
He’s from New York.
That probably had more to do with it than anything.
March 14th, 2012 at 4:09 PM
Here’s what I don’t get: for a guy who is so interested in getting shots and putting up points, isn’t D’Antoni’s fast break system perfect? You don’t have to think or worry about formation. You just haul ass, create mismatches and 4-on-3s, attack the basket and score.
And Carmelo didn’t want any of that?
March 14th, 2012 at 4:11 PM
You just haul ass
this is where i think Melo has the issue. he’s never been much of a hustle guy.
March 14th, 2012 at 4:11 PM
The Knicks are the Washington Redskins of the NBA
March 14th, 2012 at 4:12 PM
At least the next coach gets to step in and coach a “suddenly loaded” Knicks team.
March 14th, 2012 at 4:12 PM
Mike Woodson is actually a good coach. If I’m the Knicks I stick with him. ATL did him dirty. Typical ATL.
March 14th, 2012 at 4:12 PM
He’s from New York.
What? No he’s not. He’s from Charm City
March 14th, 2012 at 4:12 PM
then he would say he’s thinking about stepping down due to health reasons, only to sign on with another team.
March 14th, 2012 at 4:13 PM
All offense, no defense is how both of them approach basketball. Same with Amare, Lin, and Baron Davis.
You think bringing in a defensive guy will have these guys playing something resembling defense? Doubtful.
March 14th, 2012 at 4:14 PM
Lived in the Brooklyn projects until he was eight.
March 14th, 2012 at 4:17 PM
if the NBA really wants to make ratingsssss go through the roof, they would make this happen. hell, that shit-show would be can’t miss tv.
March 14th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
Not really. ‘Melo had to transfer to Oak Hill to get his academics up to the Syracuse’s bottom numbers. Would bet anything he was Derrick Rose to the ACT exam.
March 14th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
Think it was mostly because he realized he couldn’t handle the load in the Western Conference.
March 14th, 2012 at 4:21 PM
You think bringing in a defensive guy will have these guys playing something resembling defense? Doubtful.
I’d laugh to see Monty Williams demand Melo and Amar’e hustle on D to get minutes. Then I’d be sad cause he’s left the Hornets.
March 14th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
It all goes back to Magic having Paul Westhead fired. That’s the moment when the lunatics started running the asylum.
March 14th, 2012 at 4:25 PM
True. Of course, it worked, didn’t it?
March 14th, 2012 at 4:26 PM
Dumbest comment ever? Gotta be top-10 anyway.
March 14th, 2012 at 4:27 PM
I dunno, are we counting TBL’s comments?
March 14th, 2012 at 4:28 PM
How sad will you be when the Hornets leave New Orleans?
/ Still fuming over Sam Fucking Battisone stealing the Jazz away to Salt Lick City
/ Still sighing over trading the No. 1 pick that turned out to be Magic for Gail Goodrich
/ Still crying over Pistol Pete blowing out his knee on that stupid trick pass
March 14th, 2012 at 4:29 PM
I miss the Westhead Nuggets, losing games 175-173.
March 14th, 2012 at 4:31 PM
Bring Van Gundy back.
March 14th, 2012 at 4:31 PM
In that case, in a way. They actually won a title under Westhead. It wasn’t Showtime, but who knows if they might have won more with him at the helm?
March 14th, 2012 at 4:32 PM
How sad will you be when the Hornets leave New Orleans?
Given they’re not leaving, it’s a moot point.
March 14th, 2012 at 4:32 PM
Lord no. He has his own category.

link?
March 14th, 2012 at 4:35 PM
I had forgotten that. I seem to remember it was very early in the season when Magic got him fired.
March 14th, 2012 at 4:40 PM
Mike Brown and Mike Woodson are the same coach. Both have absolutely no understand of how to get their team to put points on the board. None. Woodson is a good No. 2 man, but he’s not a head coach if you want to win a title.
March 14th, 2012 at 4:46 PM
Did someone say that Mike Woodson was actually a good coach???
WTF?!
March 14th, 2012 at 4:47 PM
Until they find a local owner, I would not trust the NBA to not move them in the next couple of years. My theory is that they unloaded CP3 before the season so attendance would drop, thereby bolstering the case for a move.
March 14th, 2012 at 4:47 PM
Yea sorry JHS, I’d have to state pretty emphatically that Mike Woodson is not a good coach.
March 14th, 2012 at 4:48 PM
They actually won a title under Westhead.I had forgotten that. I seem to remember it was very early in the season when Magic got him fired.
It did come early in the season, a couple of years later. They didn’t get back to the finals the season in between, I think Houston upset them.
March 14th, 2012 at 4:48 PM
Mike Woodson is actually a good coach. If I’m the Knicks I stick with him. ATL did him dirty. Typical ATL.
haha. No.
March 14th, 2012 at 5:02 PM
The same guy that ignored his 2 best players (Horford & JSmoove) so Joe Johnson & Crawford can go 1 on 1?
March 14th, 2012 at 5:52 PM
D’Antoni’s biggest problem was that the thought he was a genius. Its the NBA, get the ball into the hands of your best player. Your offense worked in Phoenix because his best player happened to be the PG. Phil Jackson won running the triangle, but he was smart enough to know that his best player(s) should always have the ball. And for all of the geniuses who want to mention him winning 60 games twice, so did Mike Brown. Nuff Said.
March 14th, 2012 at 6:03 PM
Darrell- it’s rare that you and I agree on something, but I like to point it out when we do. Spot on.
