Yep, reading between the lines: Drew Brees wants $23 mil for the first 3 years of the deal — get his biggest money on his best years. The Saints wanted to give him an even $18 mil per year — on par with Peyton and Brady.

Personally, I think it’s splitting hairs. Both sides could have/should have gotten that deal knocked out and I wonder if it would have happened if the labor stoppage doesn’t take place.

Notice that there are no details. The details really matter. Is he the highest paid player for one year? Steve McNair once signed a 100 million dollar contract with Tennessee where year 7 was a 50 million dollar balloon payment, or a 1 million dollar buyout. So he was the “highest paid” player for a few seasons, but only in imaginary land.

quarterbacks get paid. Big time. And the best ones get paid the best, or should. There is no doubt that guy is central to the team’s success, either. They should be offering him healthy Peyton Manning money, and they should have done it last year. Then, they could have franchised Nicks.
But to do those things, they would have lost lots of other guys. Nuclei dissolve. And they paid Evans and they paid Will Smith, and they paid somebody else You just run out of money. But they need to pay Brees.
