Greg Schiano and Tampa Bay Off to a Great Start: Carl Nicks Signs a 5-year, $47.5 Million Deal
Just when you thought the Redskins were going to emerge as offseason NFL champs again … the Tampa Bay Bucs swoop in and in 12 hours, land the top WR in free agency (Vincent Jackson) and the top offensive lineman (Carl Nicks).
So much for the Glazers being stingy. The Bucs also have the 5th pick in the 2012 NFL draft next month.
The Bucs won 10 games in 2010 with 2nd-year QB Josh Freeman, and the franchise appeared to be moving in the right direction. But the team regressed significantly in 2011, dropping to 4-12 and essentially quitting on coach Raheem Morris midseason.
Enter Greg Schanio, money to burn, and a high draft pick. The NFC South just got real interesting

the NFL had to change the rules to get them to spend money. They wouldn’t be doing this if they didn’t have to.
March 14th, 2012 at 10:18 AM
Not sure yet if that equals success.

I could be wrong, but I read somewhere that the salary floor doesn’t kick in until 2013? Is there another rule forcing TB to spend this year?

Good additions and upgrades, yes, but I’m not sure they will make the difference in Tampa Bay getting better this year. Think it rests on three factors – health and progress of the d-line (believe they lost both starting DTs to season-ending injuries), players actually caring, and Josh Freeman not sucking as much ass.
March 14th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
And as a Bengals fan, thank fucking God.
March 14th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
The NFC South is going to be nasty. Carolina on the rise, Tampa getting much needed additions, the Saints are still an offensive juggernaut and Atlanta has a good team. Tough division.
If the North weren’t dragging the dead weight of the Vikings it’d probably be just as good.
March 14th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
Nicks got paid. Just like Jeff Faine last year. Can’t hate on that.
Saints have kept Colston and lost Nicks and Meachem. But they’re apparently going to sign Ben Grubbs and still have Jahri Evans. So they’ll be good.
March 14th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
Watching Greg Schanio will be endlessly entertaining. His challenges and clock management will be gloriously bad.
March 14th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
they were fraud-tastic in 2010. 2011 showed their true colors. Maybe 6 wins this season.
March 14th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
Steve Smith is a free agent after this year I believe. Let’s see how he does without him.

2013 is next year, dude. So a lot of this guaranteed money is probably set up in roster bonuses and salaries that are now locked in for next year, because it’s hard to get from a payroll of 58 million, where they were in the uncapped year (which didn’t “swing the competitive balance, at all, I’m sure) to 89 percent of 120 million. So they have to start spending the money now, and getting the FAs that are willing to come in now. Because if they can’t, they’ll just pay it out to all the low rent bitches currently on the roster, anyway.
March 14th, 2012 at 10:43 AM

wining and dining doesn’t equal signing. Just ask the Buffalo Bills about Mario Williams.
March 14th, 2012 at 10:44 AM
+1. Won’t be as fun as watching Raheem squirm on the sidelines during a double digit losing streak, still will be extremely entertaining, though.
March 14th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
Let’s see how he does without him.
I’m guessing he’s going to have a hard time living without himself.
March 14th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
But, it’s Tampa Bay…..
March 14th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
Would be great to see them giving dimebacks and long snappers $8 million/year.

This move is 1000 percent on Condon and Brees. All Brees talked about last year is that he wanted a fair deal that wouldn’t hamstring the team. Then Condon came out and held the team hostage. That caused them to take the franchise tag they were saving for Nicks and use it on Brees. And now Nicks is gone.

they spent big money on a punter last year in Free Agency. They didn’t even bid anybody up very high on anybody else, despite having 50 million in cap room, and coming off of a 10 win season. Don’t worry, though, there’s no collusion.
March 14th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
Legedu Naanee was Carolina’s #2.

I think this location stuff is overblown. Players (the dedicated/good ones anyway) are at the facilities or practice the majority of the time during the season, aren’t they? It’s not like he has to live in Buffalo year round if he signs there. I would think ownership/coaches and most importantly $$ have far more of an impact on where a player signs than the location of a team. All things being equal, I’m sure most would want to play in a nice city, but rarely are all things equal.

do you really think that a team with a 120 million dollar cap was going to be able to spend 20 million per (or thereabouts) on 2 guards?
Good players leave good teams all the time. Quit bitching, you bitchy bitch. Every team loses good players every year. Superbowl teams get raided, all the time. Division rivals look to ratfuck division rivals, every year.
Guess where you got that hotshot quarterback. Free Agency. So STFU and move on.
March 14th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
Superbowl teams get raided
I miss Cullen Jenkins almost as much as the Packers defense.

there’s some scenario that exists that makes me the victim of villainy. I am a persecuted entity. I will raise up to my full five feet four inches and complain.
March 14th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
If Mo Claiborne is still there at 5 Tampa could have a killer FA/Draft run. Too bad they have Derp Derp Suck playing QB.
March 14th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
I just think Brees is talking out of both sides of his mouth and I’m getting tired of it. He’s seen as this larger than life “team player” and you can’t say anything bad about him. And if a player who wasn’t popular said he would do whatever salary-wise to help the team and then didn’t do it, he would be crucified.
And you know I like Brees.

Can you name a player who was looking for his first big contract (not someone that took a hometown discount) that turned down more money in a shitty city to play for less in a “nice” city?
March 14th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
I weep for my Falcons. I think 8-8 is now the ceiling. Tampa is getting a legit WR, the best or top-4 OG in football and they are most likely getting a solid LB in Lofton (from Atlanta). Yikes.
March 14th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
I’m using this as my own.

Well yeah… kind of reinforces my argument, doesn’t it? Miami has sucked for close to 15 years.
March 14th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
They can always draft a WR this year to help out Cammy Cam.
March 14th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
And by that I mean towards Red Wings fans.
March 14th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
Better be a late round steal. They need LOTS of defensive help.
March 14th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
And you know I like Brees.
quarterbacks get paid. Big time. And the best ones get paid the best, or should. There is no doubt that guy is central to the team’s success, either. They should be offering him healthy Peyton Manning money, and they should have done it last year. Then, they could have franchised Nicks.
But to do those things, they would have lost lots of other guys. Nuclei dissolve. And they paid Evans and they paid Will Smith, and they paid somebody else You just run out of money. But they need to pay Brees.
March 14th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
It doesn’t reinforce your argument so much as explain why you have that perspective. Green Bay is the exception to the rule. As a Bengals (and to a lesser extent Lions) fan, I disagree with your argument.

Warren Sapp.

Isn’t the last offer the Saints made Brees very close to Manning money?

link it up and I’ll decide. Or Breesus or Fredo can. But the particulars matter.

I don’t know what this nickname means. I assume you’re talking about Calvin Johnson.

The offer would have made him “the highest paid player in the NFL”

I think it’s 7 years not 8.

Damn Megatron! Surpasses Fitzgerald’s WR contract
March 14th, 2012 at 11:16 AM

Notice that there are no details. The details really matter. Is he the highest paid player for one year? Steve McNair once signed a 100 million dollar contract with Tennessee where year 7 was a 50 million dollar balloon payment, or a 1 million dollar buyout. So he was the “highest paid” player for a few seasons, but only in imaginary land.
March 14th, 2012 at 11:16 AM
With a couple of qualifiers in that “Highest Paid Player” tag. If you believe M&M, they Saints and Brees are about $5million/year apart
March 14th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
But, it’s TAMPA BAY

But it’s Detroit! Why would he want to live there?
March 14th, 2012 at 11:22 AM
Yep, reading between the lines: Drew Brees wants $23 mil for the first 3 years of the deal — get his biggest money on his best years. The Saints wanted to give him an even $18 mil per year — on par with Peyton and Brady.
Personally, I think it’s splitting hairs. Both sides could have/should have gotten that deal knocked out and I wonder if it would have happened if the labor stoppage doesn’t take place.
