NFL Free Agency: Besides Peyton Manning, Mario Williams and Vincent Jackson Are the Biggest Names
NFL Free Agency officially opens today at 4 pm eastern time, though it got underway early when the Colts released Peyton Manning last week. While constant updates about where Manning is eating and sleeping have been dominating the stories, there will be several others that develop over the next few days as the bidding officially begins. We’ll look as some players sign right away and others wait.
1. Mario Williams: If Peyton Manning were not on the market, a 27-year old defensive end who was a former #1 overall pick and has 53 career sacks would be kind of a huge deal. Here’s a list of the 10 defensive ends with the most sacks through age 26. Impressive company. Now, Mario played as a rookie before his 22nd birthday, so he had more seasons than some of those guys. I don’t think he’s Bruce Smith or Reggie White. If he can be Simeon Rice, though, another top pick who left his original team at age 27 and put up over 13 sacks a year for the next five with Tampa Bay, it will be a monster signing. I expect lots of interest and a huge payday.
2. Wide Receivers: It’s a buyer’s market if you need a starting receiver in 2012, but don’t expect the pass catchers to come cheap with teams having more veteran money to spend. Vincent Jackson should be the top target given his age, size and productivity. After that, teams will look toward Marques Colston, and also have options with Brandon Lloyd and Reggie Wayne, in addition to secondary guys looking for a larger role, like Mario Manningham. Then there is Mike Wallace, who would probably slot right after Jackson, but is a restricted free agent. A late first rounder for a team isn’t out of the question, and though he will command more money, a team could get him at a discount because he would get less in year one playing under the tender.
3. Carl Nicks: The offensive guard from New Orleans is going to be a hot commodity for teams looking to upgrade their interior offensive line. Seven other guards were selected to two pro bowls and at least one all pro at ages 25 and 26, like Nicks. Of course, none of them were ever allowed to play for another team, at least until they reached 30. I anticipate several teams will express interest, and at least 3-4 will show strong interest, led by Dallas.
4. The Top Corner Will Be? We know that the passing game is king, and so the guys that defend it will be in demand as teams that missed the playoffs try to shore up their back 4. Cortland Finnegan, one of the league’s firebrands, is hitting the market after Tennessee franchised Michael Griffin. Brandon Carr may not be a household name, but he is a four year starter at 26, two years younger than Finnegan and taller. It may depend on the scheme as to who is favored by particular teams, and who draws the most interest.
5. Matt Flynn: How hot will the market be for Flynn? [Ed. As hot as his girlfriend a few years ago? I'm here all week.] It will be interesting to see if he chooses to sign with a team (like, say, Cleveland) who is out of the Manning mix, or if he waits for that decision to fall into place. If Miami doesn’t get Manning, Flynn is still out there, and his old offensive coordinator Joe Philbin doesn’t pursue him, it would cause some concerns around the league.

Saints are losing Nicks and Colston. I’d say it’s 60-40 on losing Colston and 90-10 on losing Nicks.
March 13th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
If only Atlanta didn’t choose to pay to average (to below average) corners a total of $17 million this year. Eric Winston could look great in Atlanta. So would Mario Williams. Instead we’ll get the LT from SD whose neck is about to fall off.
/8-8 at best

Genius. Once again, you are the internet’s only true champion, JasonLisk.

Mario Williams: . I expect lots of interest and a huge payday.
I nearly did a spit take when I read yesterday that the Bears were the favorites to get him. That is so perfect. Cutler is still gonna get routinely killed, but that’s 2 truly badass defensive ends.
March 13th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
I see Matt Flynn as the new Scott Mitchell.
March 13th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
As hot as Steve Bechler on Dexatrim?

March 13th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
So does anyone know how much the Skins have left in the bank after yesterday’s ruling? Can they afford a top notch receiver now?
March 13th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
I see Matt Flynn as the new Scott Mitchell.
Matt Cassel is the new Scott Mitchell. Flynn hasn’t played enough to make the comparison. Flynn is the new Kevin Kolb, who was the new ??
March 13th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
If they sign Jackson then it will truly be a chuck and duck offense.
according to what I was reading (it was bill barnwell on grantland, and I recommend all of the parts I’ve read), the bears already have a bunch of money tied up in receivers. Receivers that suck, or have broken backs, but still.
March 13th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
Matt Schaub?
March 13th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
So does anyone know how much the Skins have left in the bank after yesterday’s ruling? Can they afford a top notch receiver now?
I do not like Washington, but that ruling was utter bullshit. How do the Vikings not get in trouble for having the league’s highest payroll that year, and signing Brett Favre to a contract that paid him 24 million bucks that year?
March 13th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
Scott Mitchell wasn’t that horrible. Then again, my view is probably slanted because of the pile of suck that followed Mitchell.
March 13th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
Lisk: Do you see the Lions re-signing Avril and/or Tulloch?
March 13th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
Like we discussed in the Roundup, I kinda agree here. I’d love to see Pep and Mario getting after Stafford, Rodgers and Ponder 6 times a year. Carimi was out all but 14 and a half games last year so the Bears will at least have help for Jay in him. If the Bears can get Mario Williams and one of the many WRs in FA it should set them up for at least a winning season in 2012-13.
March 13th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
Because the added payroll, not dumped payroll.
March 13th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
Nevermind, I guess Schaub was more injured than ineffective in his first season with a new team.

If the OL wasn’t so thin in the draft this year, a guy like Riley Reiff could have fallen to Chicago at 19.
March 13th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
Looks like Seattle is going to go after Mario Williams hard.. Talk of $50 million guaranteed.
March 13th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
Since it’s a football thread and there’s a plethora of beaten down Browns fans here… what the hell do the Browns do now at 4 with Washington trading up? I probably missed that discussion since that trade took place over the weekend so I figured I’d ask.
March 13th, 2012 at 10:49 AM

Is Seattle content with Tavaris? That seems ill advised.

Ah Seattle. Where good players go to become obscure NFL players
March 13th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
They better hope they can re-sign him because he is gonna be one unhappy whiney little bitch this year.
March 13th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
please pick up nicks, browns.
/realize they’ll pick up nobody
March 13th, 2012 at 10:50 AM

I was really pissed about this as it really takes the fun out of discussing a Saturday move on Monday.
March 13th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
Sounds like Seattle also is interested in Matt Flynn.
March 13th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
claiborne would be my pick.
March 13th, 2012 at 10:51 AM

sounds about right. More than Peppers got, basically.
March 13th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
Sounds like Seattle also is interested in Matt Flynn.
are you outside Pete Carroll’s office door with a listening device?
March 13th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
Lisk: Do you see the Lions re-signing Avril and/or Tulloch?
I’ll guess yes on Tulloch. Avril will probably get someone willing to pay him what he wants, given his position. All it takes is one.
March 13th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
I would love for the Eagles to go after Lofton and/or Vincent Jackson.
March 13th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
I’d be happy with the Texans getting penalized for approaching the cap in order to re-sign Williams.
/ain’t happening.
March 13th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
Saints are losing Nicks and Colston. I’d say it’s 60-40 on losing Colston and 90-10 on losing Nicks
Didn’t see Nicks’ tweet from yesterday about the Saints making a “respectable” offer for him?
March 13th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
By now, they know T-Jack isn’t the answer
March 13th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
Floyd, Blackmon and Jeffrey have gotten most of the talk in the draft. Anyone watch ACC football this year? Was reading that Walter Football mock and saw Stephen Hill as a name they were floating for the Bears. Who knows anything about him?
March 13th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
This is fantastic.
March 13th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
Rob Johnson
March 13th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
Blackmon + McCoy = Lombardi Trophy
March 13th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
He’s franchised. Doubt someone’s going to give up a couple first round picks for the right to overpay him.
March 13th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
Rob Johnson is the answer to the double question mark thing.
Also, giants signed Terrell Thomas . I was afraid of him getting away. Still amazing that Aaron Ross didn’t get lit up during the whole playoff run.
March 13th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
In that case the revisionist history regarding Scott Mitchell is out of control. When the Chiefs got Cassel didn’t everyone expect them to finish last in the division at the time? People now act like Scott Mitchell was expected to be the 2nd coming of Brett Favre.
March 13th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
Where is that 30 year old* QB from Oklahoma State going to end up?
*approximate
March 13th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
Cleveland will go after him so he and Chilly can reunite and run the kao there!
I have the new app called NFL War Room Bug
March 13th, 2012 at 10:59 AM

claiborne would be my pick.
Blackmon at #4 and take the best QB available in Round 2.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
I can’t wait for Dallas to posture like they’re going to do something about their abysmal DBs and OLs, and then do absolutely nothing about it but draft guys in the 5th, 6th, and 7th rounds.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
I certainly hope not.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
Blackmon + McCoy = Lombardi Trophy
i’d take floyd too
March 13th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
No…Blackmon+TJack+Chilly=KAO
March 13th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
Looks like Seattle is going to go after Mario Williams hard.. Talk of $50 million guaranteed.
Yikes.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
Lofton is a tackling machine, but in the modern NFL you have to be able to play in coverage and he simply can’t do that. I’m torn on if I want him to re-sign with Atlanta. He seems like a really solid player who is great in the locker room, but when you have to deal with Drew Brees and Cam Newton 4 times a year plus Eli and Aaron Rodgers, I don’t know if you need a run stuffing LB who can’t cover anyone.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
then do absolutely nothing about it but draft guys in the 5th, 6th, and 7th rounds.
then my dad will call me and tell me about how good all those guys are. Then he’ll start rambling on about the minor league pitchers the Rangers have coming on this year.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
I am looking at the FA and I think the only one the Vikings could realistically sign is Brandon Carr
March 13th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
NO QB’S. live or die with mccoy…if you die, you’ll draft in a QB taking spot next year. there aint many QB’s worth a shit this year…not sure where all this tannehill shit is coming from, but if the browns take him i’ll be pissed. what’s the difference between him and mccoy? tannehill’s a better athlete with a marginally better arm? then you’d be wasting two draft picks…
/[something that means suck and rhymes with barkley] for barkley
March 13th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
Well the issue is that the Eagles couldn’t tackle last year. Babin is worthless in run prevention. The Eagles need a LB who can tacklet badly.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:04 AM
Cleveland needs to eat shit this year and play Barkley Roulette.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:04 AM
I totally missed Avril getting the tag. I wonder if someone will be crazy enough to offer some picks for him.
Tulloch was a big part of that Lions D last year. Vanden Bosch is really pushing for him to come back.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:04 AM
When comparing where the two will be drafted, I’m not so sure I wouldn’t take Floyd over Blackmon, actually.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:05 AM
Guilty as charged. It was not pretty.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:05 AM
Cleveland needs to eat shit this year and play Barkley Roulette.
Who are the other 5 QB’s in the chamber for next years draft?
March 13th, 2012 at 11:05 AM
Who was the workout warrior WR from GaTech?
March 13th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
agreed.
agreed.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:06 AM

agree completely. i’ve been hearing some BS on the Browns taking Blackmon 4 and Weeden at 22. stupid radio rumors because they have “chemistry”.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
When comparing where the two will be drafted, I’m not so sure I wouldn’t take Floyd over Blackmon, actually.
not OVER, but i’d be willing to accept drafting him if Blackmon is off the board.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
Calvin Johnson. Will probably be a bust. Stay away.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
Then Lofton is your man, though I just saw where the Bucs, with their insane cap space, are going after him big time.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
They could take a flyer on Case Keenum this year, I guess.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
+1 Jump Pass
March 13th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
Stephen Hill. He can’t catch the ball with any consistency, but he runs in a straight line without pads really well.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
watch out for geno at WVU…good athlete, good arm, great system for big numbers.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
Stephen Hill. Who apparently no one knows a thing about other than he impressed at the combine.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
NO QB’S. live or die with mccoy…if you die, you’ll draft in a QB taking spot next year. there aint many QB’s worth a shit this year…not sure where all this tannehill shit is coming from, but if the browns take him i’ll be pissed. what’s the difference between him and mccoy? tannehill’s a better athlete with a marginally better arm? then you’d be wasting two draft picks…
thing is blackmon may be so good as to make mccoy appear much better — getting you out of Barkley range. But that’s not the worst plan. Any round 2 rookie is bound to be wild/unpredictable.
Use Round 2 pick on a RB?
March 13th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
I hope they do. I think Cousins is better than Keenum. Not willing to go with Kellen > Keenum, but it’s close.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
What I’m saying is I think I’d rather trade down from 4 to 15 (or wherever Floyd will go) if it meant getting Floyd plus more picks. I think Blackmon will be good, but he’s not AJ Green or even Julio Jones good in my opinion. The system he played in makes him look a bit better than he is I think. He reminds me of a slightly faster Anquan Bolden. Bolden is great, but is he No. 4 overall great?
March 13th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
Pretty much a shit show after Barkley: Landry Heupel, Geno Smith, Tylers Wilson and Bray
March 13th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
look what AJ green did for dalton. dalton is crap and aj saved his ass a bunch last year.
OLB or DE. of course, im assuming they resign hillis (cuz nobody else will) or sign michael bush. either way, the browns arent that bad at RB to necessitate that high a RB pick.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
Again, if CLE plays the Barkley lottery and loses, they are fucked again as next year’s QB class will suck donkey dick after Barkley goes to Seattle.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:13 AM
I obviously like the guy a lot, but I’m not sure about him as a pro.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:13 AM
again…at least they’ll have some more talent on the team so they can use future draft picks as trade ammo.
trading draft picks when you have no talent in a city that FA’s don’t want to come to is a HORRIBLE idea. not sure how you don’t understand this.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
We’ll see. Someone will emerge. What was conventional wisdom on RGIII last year? Or Tannehill (not that I’m high on him).
March 13th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
I think Bray could be a really good QB in the NFL. He has a cannon for an arm and he’s in a system that uses a pro-style passing game. His accuracy is something to look out for, though. He was just under 60% last year, but that was without Hunter for 90% of the season. look for Tenn to throw the ball around like crazy this year with Hunter, Da’Rick and the JUCO WR as their top 3 guys. That’s a scary trio for sure.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
I get it, but I also don’t understand what you don’t get about landing a franchise guy. If RGIII pans out people will look back and say Wash got him at a bargain a la the Eli deal. Franchise QBs are almost priceless. They’re worth 3 first round picks. Having a kick ass ILB, LT and a WR is great, but if you have limp dick McCoy short hopping the ball around the field, none of that matters.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
BEcause everyone saw RGIII coming before this year. And everyone knew Dalton would be as good as he has been in the league.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:18 AM
I don’t think people thought he would blow up as much as he did, but he had a killer sophomore season and he has the NFL measurables that they love so much.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
Easy champ. Dalton was decent for one season.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
i like wallace better than colston
March 13th, 2012 at 11:20 AM
I really thought E.J. Manual would be RGIII. Really dissapointed in his career thus far.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:20 AM
what good is a franchise guy when there’s no franchise around him?
“if RGIII pans out”…blah blah blah. if RGIII pans out, i’ll be SHOCKED considering a team that just got cap-fucked unloaded all the draft picks they had that could acquire elite talent.
franchise QB’s are worth 3 first rounders, agreed. but the problem here is when you say “mccoy short hopping the ball around the field” i can tell you didn’t watch a single browns snap last year…his arm was fine, it wasn’t the problem. the problem was shitty playcalling and WR’s who couldn’t get open against 0 coverage. NO QB CAN SUCCEED IN THAT SITUATION…not peyton, not brady, not big ben, nobody. so why would the browns sacrifice their future for “a franchise QB?”
doesn’t make sense man.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:22 AM
Ummm…in the NFL. And ‘decent’ is a little disingenuous. He’s been good in the NFL, which is more than Luck, RGIII, Barkley, and any other guy being discussed has proven.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:23 AM
he also had the “option QB” stigma, fair or not, that’s gone away. but let me save you the trouble…nobody mentioned him until last season. he didn’t come out of nowhere, but he wasn’t mentioned with luck, barkley and landry jones.
QB’s always emerge during the CFB season.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:23 AM
Ok redskins are nearly out of Vjack….they lose 18 million in cap space this year so they are down to 13 left. They also lose 18 mill next year in cap space as well. All it will take is a team to give him 12 mill this year they are basically out.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:23 AM
The Eagles need a LB who can tacklet badly.
they don’t have enough of those?
March 13th, 2012 at 11:23 AM
You get the QB and then you build around him. Or at least that’s my line of thinking. Getting the DE, LB and OT and then hoping to find a QB has done wonders for Cleveland the past 20 years though.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
Browns will take Claiborne at #4, Weeden at #22, then Trent Richardson in the second round.
It’s an easy game, people.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:26 AM
There is a big part of me that wants Murray to blow up this year, lead UGA to a title and then go pro so that I can see what Hutson Mason looks like leading the team for two years.
/I’d settle for an SEC title
//but would love a shot at the natty in Miami
March 13th, 2012 at 11:26 AM
Richardson won’t fall into the second round, but getting GrandPa Weeden is interesting.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:26 AM
Ok redskins are nearly out of Vjack….they lose 18 million in cap space this year so they are down to 13 left. They also lose 18 mill next year in cap space as well. All it will take is a team to give him 12 mill this year they are basically out.
I hate Snyder, but wow, did the Redskins and Cowboys get fucked over for doing something every team did to a little lesser degree in 2010. I mean, Peppers got paid a 20 Million base salary and took a 34 million cap hit in 2010, and made like $900,000 last year.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:27 AM
the problem isn’t “getting the DE, LB and OT” the problem was missing out on those draft picks.
then again, drafting the franchise QB really worked wonders for the rams. and how’s sanchez doing? jets did a great job building around him and he still blew ass. bears gave up a haul for cutler, a franchise QB who proved he could play at a high level in the NFL, and it’s failed because they can’t surround him with anything. alex smith had weapons drafted for him, and it wasn’t until last year he actually looked decent.
it’s more than just the QB.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:28 AM
Bears grabbing Williams would be fun to watch and would provide a young body on an aging defense. But that’s a luxury they can’t afford with the other holes they have.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:28 AM
he’s young in football years, and that’s really all that matters. 28 with little tear? id rather him than tannehill.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:28 AM
If RGIII pans out people will look back and say Wash got him at a bargain a la the Eli deal
When he’s throwing to 42-year old T.O. and being protected by Jeff Saturday?
March 13th, 2012 at 11:30 AM
also, what young QB other than alex smith was given more than three years of opportunity? RGIII’s getting those three years when the team doesn’t have any 1st rounders and are in cap quicksand for two of them…
FRANCHISE QB DERP DERP.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:30 AM
Well of course when you miss on taking the QB it kills you. Of course there’s risk involved. But the Giants sure are happy they gave up a ton to get Eli, aren’t they?
I wouldn’t go near Tennehill unti the third round.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:30 AM
Tannehill needs to hold a clipboard for 2 years. He’s not ready.
Immense ability, though.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:31 AM
They will be set back for two years, not 10. And in 2014 the cap will balloon upwards and Snyder will spend money (most likely poorly).
March 13th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
Don’t understand talk of him being a top 20 pick. Never impressed me much. Just wait till the third round to draft Kirk Cousins. Born leader.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
what good is a franchise guy when there’s no franchise around him?
You get the QB and then you build around him. Or at least that’s my line of thinking. Getting the DE, LB and OT and then hoping to find a QB has done wonders for Cleveland the past 20 years though.
the bottom line problem here is that no one knows if RG3 is gooing too be a boom or bust. all else is moot and theory until we know

Well, if Wash drafts decently in the 2nd and 3rd rounds those years all will not be lost. Again, odds are Wash will suck because they’ve sucked for years, but if RGIII is good (say, Stafford/Cutler good) then I bet they’ll be happy they made the deal. Free agents look at your team a lot more when the QB is top flight.

Building around a QB worked for the Lions though.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
the giants had tiki barber, a decent OL, jeremy shockey, amani toomer and ike hilliard…all whom were better in 2004 than anyone at those respective positions on the browns.
it’s a lot easier to trade draft picks when you have actual talent on the team (and can get FA’s).
March 13th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
Well, yeah, but that would make all forms of argument null and void if you prefaced them all with, “let’s wait and see.”
March 13th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
He’s Drew Stanton with a better arm.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
We’ll see. Someone will emerge. What was conventional wisdom on RGIII last year? Or Tannehill (not that I’m high on him).

Helped that they have the best WR in the league. It’s much easier to do now though with the rookie scale.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
Bears grabbing Williams would be fun to watch and would provide a young body on an aging defense. But that’s a luxury they can’t afford with the other holes they have.
as much as i’d like to see cutler protected and have folks to throw to, having williams and peppers as bookends has such a domino effect….look at how the bears were playig before cutler and forte got hurt. defense holds teams to 17 points, bears go unbeaten w/o a WR upgrade
March 13th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
it worked the one year he’s stayed healthy, but you’re completely right. it worked for them.
adding the QB to the team in place worked well for the steelers, ravens, cardinals, saints, vikings and eagles in recent years tho too. hell, the pats didn’t miss much of a beat when cassel had to replace brady because the team was so stacked around him…and big ben’s first three seasons?
there’s far more evidence supporting building a talented team than simply having a “franchise QB.”
and im not saying the browns don’t need one…im just saying have patience.

But his mechanics have improved!! Jamal Turner said so!!

CHI should be vomiting money at Nicks and Winston.

Why can’t Washington just trade away future first round picks? Next year, they can trade a package around the 2015 first round pick to get a first rounder. Then, they can do it again in 2014 with the 2016 pick, etc. They can sell out their future for a first years until they get a formidable team around RGIII.

all this, plus espn? you guys taking resumes?
March 13th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
because you need two to tango, and what good are future draft picks if they’re later in the round? that only works for so long.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:43 AM

preach it son. PREACH!
March 13th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
Hasn’t it been like, 30 years since they’ve had a good QB? What defines patience for you guys?
March 13th, 2012 at 11:47 AM

vinny was pretty good.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
I’m not going to give you that.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
20. and again, we’ve tried to get blue-chip QB’s…tim couch and brady quinn. both of them failed despite teams being built around them.
patience = not having a backup team to root for when things go bad for the other.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
so the eagles didnt have any talent when vick came aboard? so the steelers didn’t add big ben to a team loaded with RB’s, OLmen and receiving targets?
March 13th, 2012 at 11:50 AM
Vick is going to happen again? That situation is going to be repeated? Because without the circumstances that I doubt will be duplicated their plan was Kolb. who is a very different player than Vick. Also, to get where the Eagles were at that point, they had to build around a QB in 1999.
March 13th, 2012 at 11:52 AM
and im not saying the browns don’t need one…im just saying have patience.
been preaching this about the skins for years, but the time has come. it’s RG3 or bust.

March 13th, 2012 at 11:58 AM
that’s the point im making…the good teams have been building for awhile thru the draft. packers? draft. steelers? draft. giants? draft. ravens? draft.
great teams take a lot of time to develop…time and timing. the timing isn’t right for the browns on RGIII.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
My point is that the Eagles were in the Browns situation and they took a QB to get where they are. They didn’t go the Saints/Vikings/All those other teams you named route. Besides, Mcnabb made the probowl the year before Vick took over, and the only reason Vick went to Philly is because the only other team to offer him was Cincinnati, and even then he needed a push from Gooddell. Can’t see many FA QBs with options electing to go to Cleveland if they have an option not to.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:12 PM
they didn’t have to give up a bunch of draft picks to get mcnabb tho.
probably because legit FA QB’s are a rarity. even vick wasn’t supposed to be as good as he was that year…
but that’s not my point…the point is those teams already had rosters full of talent and the QB came in and pushed it over the top. the browns don’t have that talent…even the meager redskins WR corps is lightyears better than the browns’. adding a QB to this team, that’s never rebuilt after being gutted three times in seven years, would be a complete and utter waste.
