Gregg Marshall Almost Certainly Will Be the Next South Carolina Coach Now That Darrin Horn’s Been Fired
Darrin Horn has been fired as South Carolina’s basketball coach, and almost certainly the next coach of the Gamecocks will be Wichita State’s Gregg Marshall. Horn, who was hired by the Gamecocks after leading Western Kentucky to the Sweet 16 in 2008, sputtered at South Carolina (60-63) and in the last two years, with mostly players he recruited, SC was awful (24-37).
Barring a lowball offer by AD Eric Hyman, Marshall should be the next coach. He’s from South Carolina. He coached in South Carolina at Winthrop for nine years, and took them to the NCAA tourney seven times (1-8). He’s got family in South Carolina.
This is a no-brainer. Additionally, Marshall has a senior-laden team at Wichita State – his four top scorers will graduate – and he’d be going to an SEC that should be down again (Kentucky, Florida, and Vanderbilt will all be losing tons of talent).

Serious question: have you heard this being the case from anywhere? (sources not confirmed?) Or are you just going based on your own assumptions. Not saying your assumptions are completely unfounded, you do make a couple good points, just curious where this developed.

No hat tip to Jay V?

Stoops!

Commented on this in the “dunks!” post, but nobody seems to be hanging out in there:
Glen Rice’s kid was just kicked off Georgia Tech for his involvement in a shooting outside an Atlanta nightclub. That might be worth a post.

im not trying to be disrespectful here, especially in light of the “trying to hard” thing from the roundup but…
who the fuck cares about south carolina basketball?
March 13th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
What he said.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
It seems like this would be better for South Carolina than it would be for Marshall. Unless he really wants to go home, which he may, he’d be wise to wait and see what other jobs open up as he’s going to be pretty high on everyone’s list.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
Heh. I can say that I have substituted “likely” for “almost certainly” in the headline…but, yeah.
There are a couple of issues that could snag it, but they are issues with our dumbass AD, not with a lack of interest on the part of Gregg.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
I wonder why?
Hadn’t heard the Rice Jr. story. Will google it.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
Matt Doherty is now available: http://collegesportsblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2012/03/sources-smu-fires-matt-doherty-after-six.html

Kentucky loses first round talent every year. And replaces it with first round talent. I haven’t looked, but I’d bet they’re in no danger of losing to South Carolina next year.

I think the bigger issue is stirring up these rumors while Marshall is trying to coach the Shockers in the tourney. I think they have a very good chance of making a run. Good for Horn though, he cashed in on his good tourney run and made some money, now he can go back to the mid-majors and try to do it again.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:21 PM
Holy misleading headline, Batman.
Some GA shot a gun and he was in the room with him. Rice Jr. has been suspended 4 or more times since coming to Tech and they finally had enough.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:21 PM
It’s his dream job, period. If this gets effed up, it’s on the administration at SC. He wants to be in Columbia.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
Dude was not cut out for head coaching.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
Holy misleading headline, Batman.
Well, yell at ESPN, not me. This is the first sentence in their story:
Some GA shot a gun and he was in the room with him. Rice Jr. has been suspended 4 or more times since coming to Tech and they finally had enough.
“Glen Rice Jr. has been kicked off the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets basketball team after being charged in a shooting incident outside an Atlanta nightclub.”
March 13th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
Haha, it seems the commenters are a bit fiestier after J-Mac’s little outburst this morning.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
Jesus. Homeboy needs to dream a bit brighter, no? Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke, UCLA, etc…
March 13th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
who the fuck cares about south carolina basketball?
same people who care about south carolina football?
March 13th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
ahh.. crap. Copy/paste fail.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
I don’t disagree with that, Cleet. But these rumors were going to get stirred up regardless of TBL’s involvement.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:24 PM
What exactly is a Wheatshocker anyway?
March 13th, 2012 at 12:24 PM
That’s a strange dream job. But, good for him I guess.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:25 PM
Actually, only about 10% of the former care about the latter.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:25 PM
I think “being charged in a shooting” is more inflammatory than “involvement in a shooting” but what do I know?
March 13th, 2012 at 12:25 PM
On a side note, Oct. 6th should be a fun SEC weekend.
LSU at Florida
UGA at South Carolina
Alabama at Arkansas (most likely a Gameday visit).
March 13th, 2012 at 12:26 PM
Goes back to me, him, and other cousins snagging balls for Alex English and Mike Dunleavy…the roots run deep.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:26 PM
I hear you, I think my reasoning for my first comment was that he didn’t give you or anyone a hat tip so I didn’t know if he was postulating on his own.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
Right. But good for South Carolina as they’ll find a good coach who won’t consider the job a mere stepping-stone which is the case for a lot of schools in that situation.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
Am I the only one stumped by this?
March 13th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
And yet if any of those aforementioned schools offered him the job he’d take it, right. I mean, you can’t turn down UK, Duke, UNC, UCLA, Kansas, etc because you were a ball boy at SC as a kid can you?
March 13th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
Am I the only one stumped by this?
stop trying so hard.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
You forgot the one season where it was a double-elimination tourney?
March 13th, 2012 at 12:30 PM
Dude was not cut out for head coaching.
Agreed. Nice guy, great recruiter and fundraiser. He helped raise money for the new practice facility here and for the huge arena modernization that’s about to begin on Moody Colosseum. But he just is not a great bench coach: can’t manage players or games very well.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Doherty ends up in the broadcast booth somewhere.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:30 PM
Loaded class and might get Shabazz.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:31 PM
Ok, look, sure, he’s not turning down a mega-job like that. But I’m thinking more in terms of Illinois, etc. Programs that are far more successful than SC, but not among the 5 or 6 highest echelon programs.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:31 PM
I feel safe assuming this is the last time we’re going to hear about this guy. I will eat my hat if Duke or Carolina go to South Fucking Carolina for their legend replacements.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:35 PM
Or Nerlens.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:37 PM
If Shabazz ends up being eligible.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:38 PM
Have you heard any replacement names yet, ms?
March 13th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
Or he just uses those offers to continually get paid more. If he’s good enough to get offered those kind of jobs down the road, he’s probably built something pretty decent at South Carolina.
It’s sort of like how Ferentz keeps turning down jobs, except for the whole “building something pretty decent” part.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:40 PM
watch out for the Razorbacks next year.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:43 PM

Shots fired at SC’s direction. DUCK!
March 13th, 2012 at 12:44 PM
Is the SEC ever good in basketball? Seems like every year it’s “down.”
March 13th, 2012 at 12:44 PM
bama plays at Arkansas on Sept. 15, is that the date you meant? Hogs play @Auburn on Oct. 6th.
either way, I am soooooooo ready for college football again.
March 13th, 2012 at 12:47 PM
and he’d be going to an SEC that should be down again

SEC basketball: = Kentucky + a bunch of teams that occassionally rise up to give it its due.
/watch Florida or Vandy make the Final Four this year
March 13th, 2012 at 12:48 PM
Gary Oldman from Hannibal is looking sharp.
March 13th, 2012 at 1:29 PM
Have you heard any replacement names yet, ms?
Sorry Htown, was at lunch.
I don’t follow college basketball as much so I’m afraid I could not speak intelligently on replacements. My sole source of information is fan message boards and those are more likely to include blowhards who spread incorrect information than anything else. But I’ve heard Paul Hewitt and actually Darrin Horn both mentioned.
March 13th, 2012 at 2:10 PM
I think it’s just lack of dedication to building a good consistent program year-in year-out, and because football is so prominent the fans/alums dont really put the pressure on.
