Brandon Marshall Traded to the Bears For Two 3rd Round Draft Picks
Brandon Marshall, the enigmatic Dolphins’ receiver, has been traded to the Bears in exchange for two third-round picks, Jay Glazer reports.
This one’s a head-scratcher for Miami, which now goes into the season without a QB and without a primary receiver. Coming from Green Bay, this probably makes new coach Joe Philbin a little nervous, right?
As for the Bears … they now have Brandon Marshall to pair with his old QB in Denver, Jay Cutler. If they can get Mario Williams in free agency … let the Super Bowl talk begin!

rumor was Peyton didn’t like Marshall.
probably clears room for Reggie Wayne and Manning.

Maybe Vincent Jackson as well?

I would have thought you could get more than two 3rds for him. He’s got the record for receptions in 1 game!

On the scale of epic heists, this Marshall trade ranks right up there with The Dark Knight.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
I mean, he is a stud on the field, though he does drop a lot of passes. Also, for all his talent, this the 2nd time he has been trade for below market value. Teams just can’t wait to unload him.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
Apparently they’re planning to trade for Tebow, because then they have no need for receivers. The Wildcat QB they’ve been looking for all along!
March 13th, 2012 at 4:09 PM
FOR THOW THIRD ROUNDERS?!?!?!
holy theft.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:09 PM
Wow. I really like this one for the Bears.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:09 PM
Traded two years ago for a pair of 2nds. Such a dominant force that they’ll move him out on the cheap to clear cap space.

in his defense, i wouldn’t want chad henne as by QB. and didn’t he get traded after Cutler?
March 13th, 2012 at 4:10 PM
What year are the 3rd round picks?
March 13th, 2012 at 4:10 PM
Congrats to the Bears, though. You’ve now upgraded to the Ravens offense.

March 13th, 2012 at 4:11 PM
They’re still supposedly on ths short list for Nicks, too. big moves.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:11 PM
hard to be a dominant force with chad fucking henne throwing you the ball. and by “throwing you the ball” i mean throwing it at your feet or five feet over your head.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:11 PM
I love people who view real football in fantasy football terms. They don’t need to spend $80 million (or whatever Mario will get) on another DE. They should spend that amount on Nicks and Winston. That would put them as one of the best 8 teams in the NFL now that they have Marshall to go along with Forte and Cutler.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:11 PM
If he keeps his head on straight, this is a great move. Now let’s get Mario Williams is blue and orange so we can leave pieces of Aaron Rodgers all over Wisconsin after the defense is done with him.

March 13th, 2012 at 4:12 PM
Yes, that’s it.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:13 PM
If you’re comparing Flacco to Cutler, you cray cray. Jay can actually throw the ball down the field accurately.
I bet one of them is the Panthers that we got for Olsen.

March 13th, 2012 at 4:13 PM
rich coming from a guy advocating a team with no talent or cap space throw away all their earliest draft picks for a “franchise qb” that hasn’t played a down in the NFL.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:14 PM
I think it’s worth two additional crap years to land a stud QB. Call me crazy.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:15 PM
Now maybe they can stop giving Forte 475 touches a game and having him burn out by week 12.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:15 PM
that’s a large part of it…what, you want him to throw himself the ball?
March 13th, 2012 at 4:15 PM
That.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:15 PM
Hell no. This is a good move but there’s work to be done. Phil Emery is on the job. Great start to the Emery era though. Now let’s get Mario in the CHI.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:15 PM
I don’t care that Cutler is better than Flacco. This trade is fine, but it would be much more significant if they were adding a vertical threat. Instead they’re adding a physical player who doesn’t stretch a defense or really threaten it in any new way. You just have to tackle him.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:18 PM
THEY GOT HIM FOR ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. you draft 3rd rounders with the expectation that they’ll be solid starters…not a player that can get you 80 catches, 1,200 yards and a few TD’s. he’s not fitz or steve smith or megatron, but he’s a damn good WR that they got for pennies on the dollar.
the bears have a 1st rounder this year? fuck it…sign mike wallace and give up the pick. there’s your vertical threat.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:18 PM
And that’s without taking into account that the guy is a giant pain in the ass with a psychological condition. Two third round picks is probably not below value.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:18 PM
At the time, I thought Randy Moss returning to the Vikings was terrible news for Green Bay; this is ten times worse.
The Bears haven’t had a receiver worth anything in quite awhile. This changes quite a bit in how you prepare for them defensively. It’s significant.

I guess Miami is going all-in for Peyton
March 13th, 2012 at 4:21 PM
Yeah, two third rounders is not pennies on the dollar even for a fringe top 15 WR. It’s good for Chicago because it helps fill a major void, but Miami is doing just fine here.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:22 PM
Perhaps. Would prefer they wait until closer to draft day though. How does RFA work? When can offer sheets be considered?
March 13th, 2012 at 4:22 PM
if Manning ends up in Miami, I am all-in on Brian Hartline for my fantasy team next year
March 13th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
He has never, not once, lived up to his reputation. 100 catches a year? Who fucking cares, if they’re all for six yards and you only score four times? Also, he drops passes as if that were literally his job, instead of the other way around.
But hey, I could be wrong. I only watched him when he was here. Playing with Cutler.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:24 PM
This.
There is a reason why a team is willing to give him away for the 2nd time. But I definitely think Cutler and BMarsh will be fantasy studs.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:24 PM
They’ll still owe him, what, $9.5MM for 2012? Unless he restructures, I guess. That ain’t cheap for a headcase.

I think you’re confusing butthurt with yawning indifference.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:25 PM
If…big if…Miami gets Peyton they have the 8th overall pick, meaning they can either draft a WR then or trade down and draft one later in the first round plus they added two more additional 3rd round picks and they could always sign Wayne, too.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:25 PM
How long until Schwartz raises the white flag?
With the Pack, and the juggernaut that is the Chicago Bears (fortified with Brandon Marshall craziness), why bother playing the games?

Exactly. I hope Bears fans are excited by Hanie (or his backup) chucking the rock around to a pissed off loon in Marshall, because that’s what’s going to happen if they don’t fix their OL.

March 13th, 2012 at 4:29 PM
Win for both teams. Fins get something for a guy who was basically useless in their sad offense. Chicago gets something for a draft pick, which is a lot more than the pile of failure and disappointment usually reserved for players drafted by the Bears.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:29 PM

For the Bears: if Marshall is focused, it’s a great deal. They give Cutler his old #1 threat back.
For the Dolphins: With the first pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins select…Matt Barkley, QB USC!
March 13th, 2012 at 4:35 PM
I want Atlanta to cut Ovie and Baker so they can sign Winston. Maybe they would have had the money to go after Mario, but they signed Daunta Robinson to one of the worst contracts in the NFL instead.
/sobs
March 13th, 2012 at 4:35 PM
that’s what i’ve been saying. some team with cap room and a 1st rounder to spare will find that a bargain for what you get long term.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:35 PM
Got some competition then, because according to Schefter on NFL Live: Free agent QB Kyle Orton’s first visit will be to the Dallas Cowboys.

SC- I like the move for da bears, but isn’t offensive line their biggest need, or am I thinking about another team?
March 13th, 2012 at 4:36 PM
Maybe, though if they get Manning they have that 8th pick which would get them any receiver they want not named Blackmon.

March 13th, 2012 at 4:43 PM
Actually, that’s the knock on him. Doesn’t go hard most of the time. One of those “unlimited potential” guys that never reaches it.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:43 PM
this is boring. NFL needs to make the first day of free agency an event, like the March of Dimes Telethon.
Each big name player sits in a room with their agent, smoking cigars and 5 people manning a phone bank, taking offers from teams. or fans who want to chat.
or let teams negotiate from midnight to 4pm and announce signings at 4pm.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:43 PM
Also, 54 said he’d rework his deal to get Mario here.
lombardi tweeted its gonna be too rich for the bear’s blood
March 13th, 2012 at 4:44 PM
I don’t blame Williams for taking the best offer, but I also think it says a good bit about him in terms of caring about actually winning. No way Buffalo wins a damn thing while he;s there.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:44 PM
And Mario is real good about having 8 games with 12 sacks total, and then being a no-show for the other 8.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:45 PM
Bulls talking to Lakers for Gasol
March 13th, 2012 at 4:45 PM
Yeah, that’s not happening. He’s probably in the top 5 most talked about free agents in the offseason so far, a restricted one at that. There’s still A chance of him getting signed, but they need to spend money on more important positions.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:45 PM

March 13th, 2012 at 4:46 PM
if he’s the only guy on that line that matters then it’s a problem, but if he’s on a line with a guy like vince wilfork or julius peppers, it’s not an issue at all.

March 13th, 2012 at 4:46 PM
So it looks like Curtis Lofton and Vincent Jackson will be taking up some of the Bucs insane amount of cap space. Interesting. I look forward to the Akeem Dent/Lofa Totupu (sp?) MLB tandem.
/fuck
March 13th, 2012 at 4:46 PM
Yeah, but it won’t be surprising if he reveals that about himself. He’s made $54 million off his rookie deal in Houston. If it was about winning, he’d figure out a way to stay in Houston.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:47 PM
If Mario is out, then I hope Phil uses that cap space wisely. There’s not really an offensive tackle the Bears would be interested in and we have a surplus of guards. Perhaps he’ll start looking at safeties or give Forte the extension he wants. Preferably no more than $18M guaranteed.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:47 PM
Certain teams would kill for a player with 12 sacks total, like the Bills for instance.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:48 PM
RGIII gets a nice No. 2 option. Still need a No. 1, which they won’t get for three more years though.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:49 PM
The downgrade from Marshall to Wayne regardless of who the QB is, it’s kind of steep.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:50 PM
But what about Michael Floyd and Wayne?
March 13th, 2012 at 4:50 PM
give Forte the extension he wants.
Wouldn’t do that.
Who were the top RB’s in the Super Bowl?
March 13th, 2012 at 4:50 PM

March 13th, 2012 at 4:52 PM

March 13th, 2012 at 4:52 PM
Campbell ain’t bad. He’s not really that good, but he’s better than Hanie. He’s got some mobility which would help with the bad OL. Let’s just hope Jay stays upright this year and is firing missiles to Marshall.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:52 PM
Unless they sign new linemen this has no chance of happening.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:53 PM

Gabe Carimi played all of 6 quarters last year. It’s like everyone forgot that they drafted a really good college tackle and he didn’t play most of last year. Or that the 19 step drops from the Martz offense are no longer in play. Tice, while more than likely not explosive, will look to protect Jay and pick his spots.
March 13th, 2012 at 4:56 PM
Well, Atlanta re-signed Kroy Bierman, so you can put that in your pipe and smoke it.

if these talks include the Lakers getting Boozer I will pull a “Nada” and quit the Lakers so fast…
March 13th, 2012 at 5:02 PM
Spence, it’s not a low-risk trade. Sure, they didn’t compensate the Dolphins with too much. But when you bring a player in with the kind of baggage that Marshall has it is anything but low-risk.
March 13th, 2012 at 5:06 PM
they can cut him. they have a WR need, he’s got talent…if he doesn’t work, they can address it again next year.
then again, any move is low risk in comparison to what the skins just did.
March 13th, 2012 at 5:08 PM
Gabe Carimi played all of 6 quarters last year. It’s like everyone forgot that they drafted a really good college tackle and he didn’t play most of last yearIf I were still an AInts fan, I’d still be pissed about the Bears sending Olin Kreutz down to New Orleans to take a three-week shit and then quit as part of a diabolic secret plan to undermine another team’s OL.
March 13th, 2012 at 5:11 PM
Only negative thing about March as a sports month. It’s the time of year that Mike Florio feels the most important.
March 13th, 2012 at 5:54 PM
As a Broncos fan who actually LIKED Cutler, I think the price was just about right. Cutler can handle Marshall, because he just doesn’t care about the whining, but if Marshall winds up suspended/arrested, that’s another story.
