Tiger Woods Cuts Round Short With Injured Achilles Tendon
Just when it looked as though Tiger was rounding into form, more injury issues. Tiger was feeling discomfort in his left achilles during his round at Doral, took a bad swing on his 12th tee shot and cut his round short.
“I felt tightness in my left Achilles warming up this morning, and it continued to get progressively worse,” Woods said 90 minutes later through his publicist. “After hitting my tee shot at 12, I decided it was necessary to withdraw. In the past, I may have tried to continue to play, but this time, I decided to do what I thought was necessary.”
From his playing partner, Webb Simpson:
“He just said, ‘I’m done,” Simpson, with his baby in his arms, told reporters afterward. “I wasn’t paying much attention, but it looked like he made a swing on 12 that really hurt. But didn’t say a whole lot. Class act. Shook my hand. Off he went…maybe his heel was bothering him or something, something with his foot…but we didn’t talk or anything so I’m not sure exactly what it was.”
Tiger has had four surgeries on his left knee and withdrawn himself mid-round three times in the last three years. He will have the injury evaluated this week. The only greater grimaces than his, will be from those with a financial stake in the PGA Tour.

None of this could have anything to do with possible repercussions of PED use, right? Nah, didn’t think so.
March 12th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
hope he gets healthy. love when he in in the mix.
March 12th, 2012 at 11:22 AM
This would suck if he’s not healthy in 3 weeks.

Ooohhhhh…..that one stung.

Thank you Tiger for making the rest of my afternoon watching golf enjoyable.

feel horrible for him…just as he was starting to come around. really sucks.
March 12th, 2012 at 11:26 AM
a) it’s a little ridiculous
b) it’s the same leg that’s given him problems throughout his career…and you jump on the conspiracy theory train right off the bat?

what kind of effect will this have on the ratings?

did you loop the strap thought the bag handle? or were you lazy and just looped it over the entire bag?!

yep…the clasp that held the strap wasn’t tight enough tho, and unbeknownst to me, gradually loosened up.
sucks…i really wanted a new driver too. guess i’ll just have to get a new driver shaft and wait til next year.
March 12th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
Why is it ridiculous? Dude has been beyond jacked his entire career, and now injuries (both Achilles?) have crept in over the past few years.
I don’t think it’s ridiculous at all. Especially these days, I think it’s natural to be skeptical.
March 12th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
This would suck if he’s not healthy in 3 weeks.
without any knowledge of timeframe for this injury, i think he will be. and if he’s not, he’ll give it a go regardless.
March 12th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
Only reason i want to see Eldrick at Augusta is to motivate Mickeltits to kick his ass
March 12th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
he hasn’t been “beyond jacked” his entire career. this guy’s “beyond jacked?”
it’s totally ridiculous…you know why his achilles have become injured? probably because his knees that have been operated significantly can’t bear as much weight. cmon man.

When Ryan Braun shits the bed this season and hurts himself, we’ll have a better sample size.

I enjoy watching Tiger tear it up at Augusta. But I watched The Masters before him and I’ll continue to watch it after him. It’s The Masters, fer crissakes, whether Eldrick is there or not.

did you read the excerpts in GD from haney’s new book? pretty ridiculous if they’re true…not sure how much exaggeration went into it, but haney doesn’t strike me as the type of guy to go to those hyperbolic extremes.

So glad I had Tiger in my pool this week. Had easy money locked up, all it had to do was gut out 6 more holes!
On the John Senden train this week!
March 12th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
Other than injury, Tiger’s biggest problem last weekend was distance control. He had a lot of 30′+ putts because he had no idea within 10 yards how far his 6 iron would travel.
Spence … any good tips or drills for someone who manages to both not strike down and not get turned through the ball, resulting in semi-line drive 50-yd blocked shots to the right?
March 12th, 2012 at 12:07 PM
Beer and bowling.
March 12th, 2012 at 12:08 PM
go back to basics…start from scratch.
build your grip, practice that so it’s second nature. work on aligning the clubface square to the target line until it’s second nature. then just work on chips and shots around the green focusing on keeping your left wrist flat at impact.
those types of shots are a result of a bunch of different things…id recommend getting hogan’s 5 fundamentals just for the grip and setup stuff. from there, you’ll start to feel the chain reaction.
unfortunately, there’s no quick fix for those types of shots.
March 12th, 2012 at 12:15 PM
Or Top Golf!
March 12th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
Bowling is the one thing I can do as if it’s second nature. I can go bowling once ever few months, get a heavy drink going, and still throw a 600.
I was worried about that. It’s the single most frustrating thing in my life right now. In 2010 and for years before, I was around 90 with no practice other than a few shots before the first hole. In 2011, I couldn’t play to save my life and so far this year it’s more of the same. It’s like whatever ability I had fucking disappeared.
March 12th, 2012 at 12:24 PM
you know, it’s not nearly as bad as you think…and the improvements come pretty quickly. and they’re dramatic too…consistency, power and accuracy all improve.
but the big thing is understanding the physics behind ballflight. understand this chart and, really, everything else is superfluous. even keeping a flat left wrist only helps in consistency…all you should be concerned with right now is making sure that the clubface is pointed at your target at impact.
March 12th, 2012 at 12:26 PM
and seriously…10-20 minutes a day just working on your grip and setup is all it takes. 10 minutes a day and after a week or two, you won’t even be thinking about it…you’ll put your hands on the club and get setup instinctively.
/one note…make sure you setup to the ball the same way everytime. preshot routine is very important…you want it so that you don’t even think about your routine when you’re out there.
March 12th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
a) it’s a little ridiculous
it’s a completely legit point to discuss since he was caught using a non-licensed doctor who’s been found guilt on traffing PED’s and has used PED’s with other world class athletes.
Being JACKED has nothing to do w/ PED usage. If he was able to add 3-4 hours a day of training b/c the PED allowed him this, then that’s still cheating. That’s why most elite fast-twitch athletes use PEDs – extra training. And spare me the “he’s in the gym the most” comment. So was Barry Bonds.
Soft tissue drama is a factor in PEDs. He could just a 35-year old man who’s like 45 b/c of over-taxing his body. But to at least suspect it is not irrational.
March 12th, 2012 at 12:43 PM
This is costing him any relavence in the Masters, I’d guess at this point. If he pushes too hard, I could see him screwing himself out of the US Open.
2012 Tiger needs a lot of range time to contend. He won’t have it if that achilles is tweaked.
March 12th, 2012 at 12:45 PM
Tiger was most likely using Actovegin with Galea. It’s an extract of calf’s blood. It was once on the WADA prohibited list but came off due to technicality and I believe some issues with testing it accurately. It provides benefits like HGH.
March 12th, 2012 at 12:48 PM
that’s circumstantial. what’s not is that an achilles tendon would need to bear more weight after the knee on the same leg has been operated on four times.
well he obviously didn’t train more for golf otherwise he’d have continued dominating like he did under butch.
March 12th, 2012 at 12:51 PM
what PED DOESN’T have benefits like…well all the other ones? according to wiki, actovegin “improves absorption of glucose and oxygen uptake in tissue” which is absolutely nothing whatsoever even close remotely related to what HGH does.
March 12th, 2012 at 12:52 PM
So what about the ruptured right Achilles in ’08?
March 12th, 2012 at 12:52 PM
OH COME ON…
March 12th, 2012 at 12:56 PM
doesn’t matter which achilles it is because it’s still circumstantial and the injury in question is to his left tendon. rupturing his right achilles does not mean he used PED’s just because he’s had left leg problems too.
March 12th, 2012 at 12:57 PM
well he obviously didn’t train more for golf otherwise he’d have continued dominating like he did under butch.
training in the gym and practicing the proper golf technique are 2 different things.
We could go in circles forever but there’s a shitload of circumstantial evidence that could make a rational person think (not in a court of law) that he did PEDs. Im not advocating putitng him in jail or anything. I really dont care if he did or didnt. But its not unreasonable to question if he did. Are you saying in the world of common sense, not the law, it’s out of bounds to say he may have used PEDs? Why work with Galea then?
March 12th, 2012 at 1:01 PM
because it’s still circumstantial
I object (overruled)
I strenuously object.
March 12th, 2012 at 1:04 PM
Dang, and I thought a 300 was as good as it gets.
March 12th, 2012 at 1:05 PM
exactly my point…so how is it cheating in golf?
why did peyton, vijay, fed couples, etc work with that german doctor known for untraditional techniques? because they’re competitive and want to win and traditional methods weren’t giving them the results they wanted.
in the world of common sense, PED’s don’t help golfers, PED’s don’t lower scores and tiger had absolutely no reason to use steroids for a reason other than vanity. hell, his lasik is probably more of a performance enhancer than any drug he couldve taken.
but when a dude’s injured the same leg he had two tumors removed from in 1994, im not rushing to judgement. especially since it doesn’t matter at all…he’s still injured.
March 12th, 2012 at 1:08 PM
Dang, and I thought a 300 was as good as it gets.
Dual flash son.
March 12th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
Spence you want to play lawyer with the circumstantial info bit and then inject other athletes into the conversation? I said yesterday in the golf thread 10 minutes after Tiger that Tiger should get his ass to Germany. I don’t like the line blurred with treatment but thats outside this topic.
Listen, I think Tiger is a piece of shit, who I wouldnt trust with $5 of my money, but he’s also played the best golf of anybody who ever lived. I also think he used some PEDs b/c he had a maniacal workout obsession. The fact is he did work with Galea. It makes his cred look extremely suspect.
You can argue its actual help or if other athletes do it, the legality, etc – but that’s all extraneous to Tiger’s usage. There’s a lot to suggest he did. I can see some points that say legally he didn’t, I’d agree there is zero chance of him facing charges. But I’m not going to ignore everything out there.
March 12th, 2012 at 2:06 PM
but this is all in concert with the leg injury, so we have to look at what we’re dealing with before blaming the string of injuries on PED use.
perhaps he used PED’s, which allowed him to work out more, which allowed him to train with navy SEALs, which allowed him to practice more golf…lot of leaps to take without even thinking “you know, he could’ve gotten hurt working out like a maniac or training with navy SEALs if he didn’t take PED’s.”
im not a deep thinker…i like the KISS method (hate the band more than hitler). dude’s a type A workaholic who has a knee that’s not nearly as strong as it once was…PED’s, no PED’s, it’s pretty common medical knowledge that tendons compensating for a weakened joint are more likely to be injured.
that’s nice, easy, tidy.
