Mike Francesa is Angry that Iona Got into the NCAA Tournament Over Pac-12 Regular Season Champ Washington
Mike Francesa is angry. He’s angry that a conference winner from a major conference did not get selected for the NCAA tournament. Here’s audio of Mike debating a caller on Ioner Iona versus Washington.
How did a major conference champion not make tournament? Well, let’s draw up a hypothetical:
- Go 7-5 in the non-conference, with the best win against, maybe Cal-Santa Barbara, and have a 19 point loss at home to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits;
- Have the rest of your league also struggle non-conference and have zero great wins (Oregon State over #11 seed Texas, Stanford over #11 seed Colorado State, Stanford over #11 seed NC State, and Arizona over #13 New Mexico State are the only wins for the entire conference over teams seeded #14 or better);
- Win that league, with an unbalanced schedule, by just one game over two other teams, and lose to one of those teams at home and split with the other;
- Then lose in the first round of a conference tournament game to the #8 seed in the conference.
If we want to make it an automatic bid for the regular season champ, I’m sure the likes of Iona and Drexel would be down with that. If the conference chooses to give their bid out to the tournament winner, then don’t complain when the committee looks at the details and doesn’t just automatically give the bid when they see “won the conference.”
The RPI had Iona at 40 and Washington at 70. Okay, the RPI sucks, right? But it’s the tool the committee was going to use. I can’t find any other objective measure that has Washington ranked ahead of Iona this year based on results either. Like literally none, probably because they don’t have a “but they won the Pac-10″ bonus algorithm. Some are close, others are more spread out. Would there be any outcry out all if they had gone 13-5 instead of 14-4 in the weak Pac-12, and instead done better in the non-conference? No? ‘Cause that’s Oregon. Oregon played 4 games against the dregs of USC, Arizona State and Utah, while Washington played 5. That extra game, two against California. And Oregon’s results were better outside of conference play.
He also took a shot at Gonzaga, after being told BYU had a quality win over them. Gonzaga, who beat Arizona and is a #7 seed, isn’t any good. And they certainly don’t boost the resume of BYU, who by the way beat Oregon.
But Washington won the conference! Great job, Mike Frances-er! Now go back to not actually paying attention to basketball, after you rousted yourself enough to look at some standings.

He should be more outraged about the cake walk a 4 seed Michigan team has to the Sweet 16. Especially after they were blown out Saturday.
March 12th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
Mike Francesa sounds like one of those guys that doesn’t follow college hoops all year long and then suddenly becomes an expert when March rolls around.
March 12th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
A tournament will solve everything!
March 12th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
Temple is the top 5 seed.
March 12th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
But did Mikey reference his “basketball career” like he mentions his baseball career?
I still listen to Francesa a couple times a week. The Mongos are the ultimate source of entertainment in the office. I do like that Francesa doesn’t screen his calls and just takes whoever.
March 12th, 2012 at 3:34 PM
Why do New Yorkers listen to this guy?

You mean he sounds like most of the supposed “experts” and a good portion of our community of commentators?

Bingo.
March 12th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
I realize it’s your thing to just say shit about Michigan….but they were the highest seeded 4-seed, so that actually makes sense.
March 12th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
Because when the Yanks drop 2 of 3 to the Orioles in May they need an outlet through which they can trade Nick Swisher for Felix Hernandez and Dustin Ackley. It’s great radio.
March 12th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
Also, this.
March 12th, 2012 at 3:37 PM
Subject matter aside that caller got schooled….
March 12th, 2012 at 3:38 PM
You guys going to be doing this all tourney long?
March 12th, 2012 at 3:39 PM
Temple sucks. Michigan got an easier path than 3 seeds.
March 12th, 2012 at 3:39 PM
He doesn’t watch a lot of sports anymore. It’s perfect.
March 12th, 2012 at 3:39 PM
Michigan and Indiana both being 4 seeds makes sense as to why they were given that slot. Both made the best of their chances against top competition (Indiana a little more than UM) but they both dropped a couple games they probably shouldn’t have.

The Jeremy Lin of tacos. Had such high expectations going in from all the hype and it didn’t even affect the taste. I hold out hope for the Cool Ranch shells but don’t waste your time with the nacho cheese ones.

March 12th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
Holy shit the League just laid the fucking hammer down on the Redskins. $36M in lost cap space for front loading deals in the uncapped year. Is that fair? The year was uncapped. You were supposed to manipulate contracts for that year.
March 12th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
It’s never necessary. You guys don’t like CBB, we get it. It’s March and there is no real football being played, get the fuck over it.
March 12th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
Manning’s gonna meet with the Titans. Boom!
March 12th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
I was also confused by this. I thought the uncapped year meant it was cool to do that. Were they told they couldn’t do it and did so anyway?

March 12th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
It’s not so much that I (I can’t speak for others) don’t like CBB. It’s more along the lines of me laughing when the answer to every question re: CFB is to implement a playoff.

March 12th, 2012 at 3:49 PM
Its a real shame that there is a rookie salary scale in place now. Would have been hilarious watching them squirm to free up enough money to sign RGIII
March 12th, 2012 at 3:49 PM
This is like when you tried to tell us that Jeter’s catch where he dove into the stands wasn’t that impressive. I refuse to believe you’re being serious.

I think Old El Paso sells a cool ranch type of taco shell. Majorly overseasoned. Tons of MSG.

Actually, I enjoy college basketball. But when do we ever actually talk about what happens on the field/court on this blog? 10% of the time? Less? If you must know, I think the game needs to be tweaked a little bit to make it better. I’d enjoy it more then.
Aside from that, and as to my sarcastic first comment, I will argue that a Royal Rumble end-of-the-year tournament is not the best way to declare a champion, a point that spills over into college football given TBL’s incessant anti-BCS propaganda.
But mainly, I wasn’t trying to ruin your day, man. I’m sorry for being a smartass.
March 12th, 2012 at 3:51 PM
It’s the truth. Getting excited over Doritos nacho cheese then realizing you have cool ranch instead, is like getting Mark Sanchez instead of Peyton Manning.

Anyone want to help me out? Take this link, http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/bracketology
compare it to the actual bracket, and tell me how Lunardi does on seeding? My numbers aren’t matching up with his, but wanted a new set of eyes.
Keep track of three different things: 1) teams seeded at exact same seed level (i.e., a 1 seed in his projection that is also a 1 in the real bracket 2) teams seeded within 1 seed line (so if he has a team at 8, he gets credit here if they are a 7 or 9). 3) teams he has in the field, but not within a seed line of being correct.

But that’s the point. What works in one sport won’t automatically work in the other. They are completely different, after all.
March 12th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
I think we already sufficiently mock TBL and others for their crusade on that but whatever.
March 12th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
Are we really that bad anymore? I mean us hockey fans. I feel like we don’t really drop in a nugget (OK, maybe Vlad does) unless it’s something significant like a big trade or a controversial suspension.
Hockey commenting has gone down significantly this season here. Probably because a lot of us spend our time in hockey-centric forums now.

The soccer fanboys get quite bitchy whenever a soccer thread gets highjacked. I notice these happen to be some of the same folks. I just figure it is ingrained in the TBL commenting culture and don’t worry about it.
March 12th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
Am I the only one who thinks that a 68 team playoff combined with another 64 team playoff for teams that have already played 30+ games is absurd?
I’m watching the Hockey East and the Frozen Four.
March 12th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
dude shoulda slid, poor decision on how to play the ball.
I also would not be surprised if there was some sort of “gentleman’s agreement” where messing with cap space would not be done, those that did it would be in for a hurting.
March 12th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
Nah, given the number of teams, parity of talent, number of games played, etc., I’d think starting the tournament with the Sweet 16 would suit my fancy, if for no other reason, and it is a telling reason, than the rounds of 32 and 64 have no catchy nicknames.
March 12th, 2012 at 3:58 PM
SC, I think youre right. And it’s tough when the only hockey posts here anymore are for violent hits or shootout goals. Youd think there’d be more hockey thread jacks then there are

Any effort is good effort as far as I’m concerned. We usually talk about whatever is happening on that day anyways. Can’t believe there’s only 12-13 regular season games left. We’re a month from the Stanley Cup Playoffs! Best part is that there’s not a clear cut favorite to win. Playoffs are going to be a lot of fun this year.

Thanks, that’s what I got for him, 6 misses by more than 1 seed, 1 team out.
I actually went 67 for 68 too, because I accidentally omitted Colorado State when putting my final one up and transferring it from my notes. Had Iona in. Me realizing I was missing CSU would have knocked out South Florida or Drexel. Had Seton Hall out.
I also did better than Lunardi at seeding the top half of the bracket. I nailed the top 3 seed matchups except I had Michigan, as my last 3, in the UNC/KU group instead of Georgetown, my first 4.

March 12th, 2012 at 4:44 PM
NL East is tough…this is probably the last year the Phillies will win the division. Washington, Miami and Atlanta are all solid. I’m a little down on the Braves this year, but definitely see Wash and Miami improving. And I’m fully expecting a 45 HR season from Stanton.
I see similar for the Red Sox, but with Buchholz back, it will help a little.
March 12th, 2012 at 4:45 PM
i’m jumping on the Washington bandwagon. If that pitching stays healthy, they will be a dangerous team.
March 12th, 2012 at 4:47 PM
Buyer beware of Gio Gonzalez. And John Lannan still is awful.
March 12th, 2012 at 4:49 PM
again, it all depends on health. I also think Lannan may not be in the starting rotation by memorial day. That all hinges on Wang performing well
March 12th, 2012 at 4:53 PM
Francesca also doesn’t think NC State won the national title. “Albuquerque? What kind of name for a city is that?”
March 12th, 2012 at 5:33 PM
It’s sad to see this fool getting even more air time. He’s the biggest blowhard this side of Mercury.
The bigger problem is these conference tournaments. I know it’s about the almighty dollar, but perhaps- I’m just saying- they shouldn’t be played in the smaller conferences. I know they want televised games, etc. but the real problem is when a Drexel dominates a league all year and loses one game and is either sitting on the bubble, or gets in as an at-large to the detriment of a “power conference” middle of the pack team. It’s one thing for a UConn to go on a run in a power conference, and another to have teams with losing overall records in the NCAA tourney.
I’ve never liked the conference tournaments, because three games in three days (4 in 4 or 5 in 5) now means more than 16 or 18 games over two and a half months. The motivation in these games is NEVER the same for all participants, and I think it creates the NCAA tourney selection problems more than anything else.
