Tom Izzo Had Some Harsh Words About Illinois’ Firing of Bruce Weber
Tom Izzo seldom couches his opinions. Not surprisingly, he had a few words about the firing of Bruce Weber. He did not feel Weber should have been fired and felt compelled to let the media know he was “sick of it,” three times over at his press conference in Indianapolis.
“My wife and I shed tears this morning,” Izzo told the assembled media. “Some were for Bruce and some were for our profession.”
His dates were a little off, but Izzo seemed especially irked by Illinois AD Mike Thomas declining to support Weber during a Feb. 11 interview, when the team was 16-8. Illinois lost 7/8 afterward, finish 17-15.
“And whenever you’re in an organization, whether it be yours, whether it be mine, or whether it be a business one, the only way you can be successful is if, top to bottom, from the president to the trainer, we’re all on the same page, and that in five, six months, you can determine something.
“I feel bad for the Illini nation, because somebody’s — somebody pulled the rug out from under them. I feel bad for those players that have been there that, in my estimation, weren’t given a fair chance back about the middle of January, whenever that famous statement was made.
“But if you look at that team from that statement, it went directly down.

Not that Weber did a fantastic job of late, but the degree of entitlement from Illinois fans is incredible. You’re not Kentucky.

The entitlement of kentucky fans is fucking unbearable. I don’t even think it is deserved. They just have nothing fucking better to do with their boring lives

Well, compared the the fan base’s outsized sense of entitlement, neither is Kentucky.

This is jut the best. I wonder if Tom Izzo’s wife has business cards that identify her as Tom Izzo’s Wife and if she mentors young girls in the profession of Coach’s Wife.

Parts of Illinois resemble Kentucky, could explain the confusion…went to a football game in Champaign some years back, wasn’t expecting the fans down there to sound like an episode of the Dukes of Hazzard
I’d like to think if this had happened to Bo Ryan Izzo would have spit on the floor when asked about it and walked away

It’s amazing how this state fails in college athletics.

Izzo, please. They’d lost 5 of 6 even before that Feb 11 no-vote-of-confidence. I’m sorry but if you’re going to drop games to Penn State, Minn, and Northwestern within a month’s time then yeah, you probably need to be on the hot seat.
/keep your damn hands off Gregg Marshall

aside from the Henson probation garbage years of the early 90′s, Illinois had been a consistent top 4 seed since Henson took over. Weber missed the tournament 3 of the last 6 years, was an 8 or worse in 2 years, and the one top 4 seed they got they lost in the first round. No one’s expecting to make the Final Four every year, but it’s not out of the question to make the tournament every year at Illinois.

indeed.

The dumbass who uses the Numbers Never Lie twitter from ESPN just asked of Syracuse will be a 2 seed in the NCAA tournament. Some people are just stupid

Of course Izzo is upset, mediocre Illinois isn’t a threat to him. A new coach like Shaka Smart has the potential to make Illinois a lot better.

If you don’t think Weber should have been fired take a look at this post on Illinois offense since Weber took over:

I just love it when hugely successful coaches from other teams step in and say things like this when coaches of lesser teams are fired.
Look, maybe most schools shouldn’t reasonably expect to compete for conference championships and Sweet 16s every year. But after quite a few years of middling results with no chance for either, is it so wrong that they might want to go in a different direction in hopes of improving their lot?
I’m sure Tom Izzo is crushed that his buddy Bruce Weber is gone. But he also knows that if he loses to Bruce Weber too many times, it’s his ass on the chopping block. So I suspect he’ll get over it.
