Where Will Peyton Manning Play? Arizona is the Vegas Favorite
Peyton Manning and Jim Irsay are officially announcing his departure from the Indianapolis Colts now, and teams can officially begin their courtship. There should be no shortage of suitors trying to wine and dine, or offer free donuts, to Manning in order to get him to their team.
RJ Bell (@RJinVegas) has provided odds of teams acquiring Peyton Manning for the upcoming season. Darnell Dockett’s Arizona Cardinals lead the list, which is understandable–they’ve expressed interest through the media, just had success with a veteran quarterback in Warner, have Larry Fitzgerald, and have an option bonus on Kevin Kolb coming up.
Here are the complete odds:
- Arizona Cardinals- 19% (+250)
- Miami Dolphins- 16.5% (+300)
- Washington Redskins- 13% (+400)
- New York Jets- 9.5% (+600)
- Kansas City Chiefs- 7.5% (+800)
- RETIRE- 6% (+1000)
- Seattle Seahawks- 6% (+1000)
- Houston Texans- 4% (+1500)
- San Francisco 49ers- 3% (+2000)
- Denver Broncos- 3% (+2000)
- Tennessee Titans- 1.5% (+4000)
- THE FIELD- 11% (+500)
The biggest movers on that list have been Retirement (odds getting longer), the Chiefs (after Crennel acknowledged interest) and the Arizona Cardinals, who are clearly willing to consider him.
I have already said that I think he should pursue the San Francisco 49ers if they want him, because of the excellent defense and the fact that they were in the title game without a great offense. My impression of that list is this. The top of the list is driven by leaks in the media that the team has interest, plus the need for an upgrade, which has shot them up the board. The value on this list for me is in the Seattle/Houston/San Francisco range, because those teams haven’t publicly made any indications yet, but if they did, their odds would rocket dramatically. They would also be attractive options if the interest was mutual.
Ultimately, though, we won’t know what Manning will value the most, and what will ultimately swing his decision. Will he want to play in good weather, near a place he has a home, like Miami? Will he want to play with great offensive weapons (Arizona) or value the other side of the ball (San Fran, Jets, Houston)? Will the highest bidder blow him away, with guys like Snyder and Ross willing to spend desperately to spark their franchises? Which teams will go “all in” and which will want contract provisions related to his injury?
Who knows. And that’s why no team has more than a 20% chance of landing a Hall of Fame quarterback who missed all of last year with neck surgeries, but who has played for a team that won 12 or more games for seven straight years.
Where Will Peyton Manning Be Next Year?
- Arizona Cardinals (28%, 347 Votes)
- Miami Dolphins (27%, 334 Votes)
- Kansas City Chiefs (9%, 112 Votes)
- San Francisco 49ers (8%, 94 Votes)
- Seattle Seahawks (6%, 76 Votes)
- Washington Redskins (4%, 54 Votes)
- Houston Texans (4%, 52 Votes)
- New York Jets (4%, 51 Votes)
- Denver Broncos (4%, 44 Votes)
- Other Team (3%, 39 Votes)
- Retired (2%, 28 Votes)
- Tennessee Titans (1%, 18 Votes)

Did we already talk about or will there be a post about another “racist” incident at a high school basketball game, this time involving a “USA” chant???

If he wants to win, he has to consider the 49ers
March 7th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
Schefter says, in no order: Arizona, Miami, Washington, and NYJ. Really going out on a limb. But he did say the Texans are 100% out, so I might move them up the board a little bit.
My completely uninformed opinion is that it’ll be Arizona.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
Sorry, doesn’t fit the media driven narrative.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:20 PM
Schefter says
Schefter is the best at taking a few minutes to say absolutely nothing. Guy is worthless. Peyton and Mort are tight, he’s the only guy I’d pay any attention to.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:20 PM
Skins make no sense from a competitive standpoint.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:21 PM
If he wants to win, he has to consider the 49ers
Niners don’t want him.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:21 PM
Will he want to play with great offensive weapons (Arizona)
their defense is getting better, too.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
p.s. I really, really want to “dismiss” that racist incident I cited above.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
How fast does Manning get signed? I think teams wait a few weeks, let him get up to speed, then he works out before the Draft.
As for where…I keep thinking it’s going to be Seattle. Paul Allen can offer the moon. There’s offensive weapons up there to team up with. The only thing that could keep that from happening is if Pete Carroll’s personality can’t mesh with Pey-Pey.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
MYSTERY TEAM
March 7th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
I like Arizona. But I heard today that their cap situation isn’t friendly. They’ll have to cut loose Levi Brown and if they cut Kolb there will still be a 6 million cap hit IIRC.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:24 PM
Phila.
Move Vick to wildcat/slot.

Miami has everything Seattle has. Rich owner who is a star fucker. Some offensive talent, decent defense. Nice weather (Obviously Seattle doesn’t have this). And a new coach who doesn’t have Pete Carroll’s ego.
I’d say it’s either Miami or Arizona.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:26 PM
Marshall/Wayne or Fitz/Wayne would be awesome.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:26 PM
If you read the article you find out that the team that lost is mostly minority (and I assume mostly Latino) so they weren’t chanting U-S-A for any other reason to stick it to the “mexican” team…which is kind of racist, actually.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:26 PM
p.s. I really, really want to “dismiss” that racist incident I cited above.
you basically already have
March 7th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
Doesn’t Arizona have a cheap owner too? I know they used to.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
Arizona would be a good spot for him. Warm weather, a dome, Fitzgerald, Frank Reich (all-time legendary QB) as QB coach, and he could bring Wayne with him.
Why does anyone think that he would work out with the control freak Shanahan’s in DC? Manning calls his own plays; he won’t take any shit from Kyle Shanahan (who is younger than him, no less).
March 7th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
If you read the article you find out that the team that lost is mostly minority (and I assume mostly Latino) so they weren’t chanting U-S-A for any other reason to stick it to the “mexican” team…which is kind of racist, actually.
I watched the news report, and the entire administration of the winning team freaked out immediately on the chant beginning, because of what they believed it was intended to mean, given the context.
Or, alternately, this was the liberal media (at fox news in San Antonio) just drumming up stories for their liberal agenda.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
FIELD
because crazier shit has happened
March 7th, 2012 at 12:29 PM
Funny. He’d probably set a record for concussions or broken ribs.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:29 PM
Ever been to San Antonio? I bet the Mexican flag has been waved at SA Edison games before. That’s not racist.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:30 PM
I like the Field, but I think the odds should be longer.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:30 PM
Should Atlanta be on this darkhorse list?
March 7th, 2012 at 12:30 PM
I deem that to be ignorant and racial profiling, which isn’t necessarily racist. It is however, not that big a deal.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:30 PM
I chuckled a bit …
March 7th, 2012 at 12:31 PM

March 7th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
Racist may not be the right word for what it is, and I’m not sure what word I would use. Maybe dickish?
March 7th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
Nope. You’re probably right on this one. THose kids had intent behind it. But I have no doubt “Viva La Mexico” is a heartfelt sentiment at Edison and they could wave the Mexican flag with impunity at their high school events. I fail to see how this is or should be national news I guess.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
Is Reggie Wayne still really that good?
/honest question
March 7th, 2012 at 12:33 PM
Should Atlanta be on this darkhorse list? Not enough cap room, most of which needs to be focused on defense.
Repeat: Julio Jones trade was dumb.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:33 PM
Ever been to San Antonio? I bet the Mexican flag has been waved at SA Edison games before. That’s not racist.
Have I ever been to San Antonio? I grew up 250 miles south of San Antonio. I know all about the relationship between mexicans and white people.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:33 PM
Is he the greatest free agent ever? Who else is there? Reggie White?
March 7th, 2012 at 12:33 PM

Pretty much. Arthur is probably going to start saving his cash to build that shiny new stadium of his.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:33 PM
And fumbles. And complaining to refs about hits.
It would be a great time.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:33 PM
cardinals w/o wayne
I think the darkhorse could be Tampa Bay since they have the cap room to sign Wayne and whatever other offensive weapons Manning wants.
John Elway has to be thinking Manning b/c it’s an easy out with Tebow and the team will be instantly better.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:33 PM
Yeah. It’s taunting. Probably dickish. Also kind of funny to me.

I think anyone who has Peyton throwing the ball to them will be pretty good.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:35 PM
Well, it was a Fox News link so I can guess why they picked it up.
/they took our jobs!!!
March 7th, 2012 at 12:36 PM
Damn, I wonder what the internet wouldve thought of my high school. We chanted “You toss salad” to the team from the private school that we deemed to be gay. I mean, kids are stupid. This isnt new.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:37 PM
Team I’d most like to see Peyton sign with: the Raiders. Simply for the laughs.
Team I’d least like to see Peyton sign with: the Aints. Because the Manning family has suffered enough.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:38 PM
Racist may not be the right word for what it is, and I’m not sure what word I would use. Maybe dickish?
just a guess, but something similar had probably happened at a pep rally or something to alert the coach/administrators to be on alert.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:38 PM
Is he the greatest free agent ever?
five years ago he would have been. not now

March 7th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
I’d put Brees on that list, maybe at the top.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
JPQ (/pours one out) had an interesting idea. Trade Brees to some team for a slew of picks and sign Manning all the while saying F-U to the NFL.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
Agree.
So there’s a high probability that there were Mexican flags being flown, chants of Meh-hi-co and the singing of Himno Nacional Mexicano on the other side of the gym? Might annoy me a bit. And I’m sure it wouldn’t have been reported, either.
Just imagine what the soccer games are like. geesh.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
I need some speakers for our living room. Nothing too expensive, and I really don’t know what’s good, what the options are. Are wireless speakers good? Are they powerful enough? (like I said I know nothing, just looking for some options).
This can never be true.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
Is he the greatest free agent ever? Who else is there? Reggie White?
Drew Brees, maybe.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:40 PM
Say what now.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
In hindsight this is true, but at the time he wasn’t seen as that big of a FA.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
He was the Don Strock of the 1990s.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
Is he the greatest free agent ever? Who else is there? Reggie White?
Drew Brees, maybe.
Was Brees more highly regarded than Manning is now when he left San Diego? Miami passed on Brees due to injury concerns.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
do you already have a receiver you’ll be hooking these speakers up to?

March 7th, 2012 at 12:42 PM
This is a sneakily good angle.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:42 PM
But he wasn’t that great at the time.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:42 PM
But Brees was damaged per Dr. Saban…so the FA market impact was muted.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:42 PM
I’m talking in terms of what he did for the team he signed with. Brees was overlooked at the time, but no other free agent has had (arguably) the impact he has for the team he signed with.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:43 PM
They did have Dante Culpepper, though. as someone who hates the dolphins, that was awesome.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:43 PM
I’m talking in terms of what he did for the team he signed with
That’s an entirely different question though.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:43 PM
In hindsight this is true, but at the time he wasn’t seen as that big of a FA.
am I not allowed to use hindsight?
Was Brees more highly regarded than Manning is now when he left San Diego?
no, he was actually terrible in the beginning, but just beginning to be this guy by the time they had Rivers. And they left him out there, instead of going to Rivers, and he tore up his shoulder in week 16 or 17, right prior to his free agency.
Reggie White is the best other answer. He was just about the league’s best player when he changed teams.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:43 PM
Winner.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:44 PM
I’ve got a TV and a BluRay player with wifi for Netflix. I don’t do any gaming (we don’t even have a system), and our TV watching is very rare except for NFL and shows on Netflix/movies. The problem is that our ceilings are high and sound quality in the room is tough so the TV has to be all the way up on volume to hear certain shows, even if you are 20 feet away in the kitchen.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:44 PM
This is worse
March 7th, 2012 at 12:44 PM
32-point 2nd half comeback. Never forget. Reich had magic in that right arm. Where other QBs would’ve failed, Frank reached into his bag of tricks and pulled out a miracle.

March 7th, 2012 at 12:45 PM
Reggie White was > Brees. Everybody wanted Reggie. There have only been a few monster UFA signings that have translated to a SB win though. And Reggie is the biggest name on that list. Reggie is one of the greatest defensive lineman of all time.

March 7th, 2012 at 12:45 PM
I refer to the 11 mostly horrible years that Archie suffered through in New Orleans.
Also, the problem with trading Brees for a slew of picks and then signing Peyton is: 1) Peyton would never sign with the Saints, and 2) the NFL would take away all those draft picks as part of the Bounty Gate punishment.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:45 PM
Now this is something that we can all get up in arms about
Natural Selection is WAY to slow a process
March 7th, 2012 at 12:46 PM
exactly. You can’t talk your fan base out of Tebow if your options are Matt Flynn, QB drafted in the 3rd round, whatever QB is cut from Manning’s new team.
but if you put Manning in a Broncos jersey, even without Reggie Wayne, only the die hard Tebow fans will be up in arms.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:46 PM
John Elway has to be thinking Manning b/c it’s an easy out with Tebow and the team will be instantly better.
Eisen just said it would be a bloodless coup. Yeah right. Skip Bayless would have material for a year and it would blow up the internet.

March 7th, 2012 at 12:47 PM

Tampa Bay better not spend a single dime on Peyton Manning. The Glazers need to buy me a central midfielder first.

Indeed. He single-handedly turned the Packers around. They were Cleveland Browns awful for 30 years before he showed up.

2. Mike Ditka
3. The Vikings
March 7th, 2012 at 12:50 PM

Not really. Nobody passed on signing Reggie.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:50 PM
In my heart, the more acceptable scenario.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:50 PM
I don’t think the NFL could/would take away picks a team got from a football trade. They might take more picks in subsequent years or something, but I don’t see them ever taking away a pick that used to belong to another team. The year that Patriots got penalized for doing what everyone else does but 10 feet to the left and having no in-game access, they kept the 49ers pick and used it to get Mayo, IIRC.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:51 PM

March 7th, 2012 at 12:52 PM
i think the Pats sign him.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:52 PM
The rhetoric, the validity of which I have no idea, is that Reggie White signing there also made GB a legit place to actually choose to play, and helped them in signing future FAs.

Let Skip Bayless talk, let Timmy’s acolytes fret. The ones who are insane about him to the exclusion of every other NFL player are a vanishingly small group.

Some 80 percent of all fatal and serious car crashes are caused by male drivers, the study says. It says women are 27 percent less likely than men to cause auto accidents. Male drivers who were polled were found in various bars at golf courses throughout the United States and had finished their round of golf at least 2 hours before completing the study, statistics reveal men were involved in 6.1 million car accidents while women were involved in 4.4 million.

Why? What’s your twitter user name?
March 7th, 2012 at 12:55 PM
You can get a good $300 receiver by Onkyo or Harmon Kardon if you keep your eyes peeled and spend $250 on a speaker set with subwoofer.
Yamaha speakers are decent, Klipsch and Polk are high end but great quality.
Home Theatre in a Box where it’s a receiver and speakers is a good option if you don’t want to put something together peice by peice. I would stick to Onkyo, Yamaha, Harmon Kardon for that and upgrade the speaker wire if you intend to put it through walls or under the floor for more than 8 feet or so.
i can go on and on about this. sold home entertainment electronics for a while
March 7th, 2012 at 12:55 PM
If I have the bluray sound going into the TV do I need a receiver? Can I just put sound output from the TV into whatever preamp/powered speaker thing it has? Or is that what a receiver is?
March 7th, 2012 at 12:56 PM
Elway’s demonstrated that he isn’t too worried about Bayless or blowing up the internet – I still come back to whether or not Peyton can be convinced the Broncos are close enough. Last year’s record was a mirage and there are significant holes on this team – the DB’s are all social security eligible.
March 7th, 2012 at 12:57 PM

Suck it, dudes.
Throwing DUIs in there as part of the study is not even fair. If you need us to be driving under the influence to win that should tell you enough right there.

Lisk, you can’t possibly have bought into this notion that Timmy somehow has more juice locally than 7.
Let Skip Bayless talk, let Timmy’s acolytes fret. The ones who are insane about him to the exclusion of every other NFL player are a vanishingly small group.
I would do it. I’m just saying that the notion that a Manning to Denver move would be bloodless is probably not accurate. I’m not saying that Elway will listen to him, but there will be morons howling.
March 7th, 2012 at 1:02 PM
I wish, but I doubt anyone in the Jacksonville front office has a significant angel dust addiction.
March 7th, 2012 at 1:02 PM
I am so looking forward to the return of the Bagheads.
Maybe they can bring Mecom back as owner too, and he can hire Buzz Aldrin as GM.
March 7th, 2012 at 1:03 PM
Maybe Khan could bail the Broncos out – he says he’s sick of the tarps. In any event Timmy would need to go – all of the “lessons” in the world from Peyton won’t make him a traditional QB.
March 7th, 2012 at 1:03 PM
Embarrassing. Sometimes I don’t know the correspondence between twitter and TBL user names if they’re not the same.
March 7th, 2012 at 1:03 PM
Our college friends chipped in on a group wedding gift and got us almost that very Yamaha set. It’s been fine so far. I’m amazed neither kid of mine has put their foot through the subwoofer.
March 7th, 2012 at 1:04 PM
You disgust me.
March 7th, 2012 at 1:04 PM
That actually sounds like something we might look into. As long as it’s more powerful/carries better than the TV, it’ll work for me.
March 7th, 2012 at 1:04 PM
Is that true? Every team at some point decided the money wasn’t right, and let Green Bay be the high bidder.
Unless I’m mis-remembering and White took less to go to GB.
March 7th, 2012 at 1:04 PM
Loved Don Strock. Marino loved Don Strock.
/still cries in beer after SD defeated MIA 41-38 in ’82 playoff game.
March 7th, 2012 at 1:05 PM
Lisk – agree that the morons will howl, loudly. Denver has way too many sports talk stations for the market size, and many of the hosts troll endlessly. If not this, they’ll simply find something else to howl about.
March 7th, 2012 at 1:07 PM
Still wonder why Shula insisted on starting Woodley every game before pulling him and inserting Strock. Woodley was awful.
March 7th, 2012 at 1:07 PM
I know you hate Brett Favre now but don’t be stupid
March 7th, 2012 at 1:08 PM
But the morons are gonna howl no matter what, as long as Timmy’s drawing a paycheck in the league. Manning’s presence here would mute that, because even his most ardent supporters know that he can’t compete on that level.
Volduck is probably right in that it won’t happen. But they have to try.
March 7th, 2012 at 1:08 PM
So…. Is anybody watching that WVU/UConn game?
March 7th, 2012 at 1:08 PM
That was a big reason I changed my Twitter name
March 7th, 2012 at 1:09 PM
I have a sound bar and it’s great for better sound, but not great if you will ever want surround sound.
the last time I saw some wireless speakers, they weren’t really wireless since they needed to connect to a power transmitter.
they were wireless from the receiver, but they still plugged into the transmitter in their area and the transmitter needed an outlet.
March 7th, 2012 at 1:09 PM
You’re right, amazing coincidence that the team God told him to play for was also offering the most money (to be fair he did admit the God message stuff was silly later in life when he going on that interesting spiritual quest)
March 7th, 2012 at 1:09 PM
What would be the market for Tebow if he hit became a FA. I imagine the list of teams willing to bring him in primarily as a QB, and even moreso a starter, would be pretty slim.
March 7th, 2012 at 1:09 PM
The dreaded 3-words heard in minor league baseball…..He has potential.
Don bailed his ass out alot. People in MIA love Strock. I miss those MIA games from the ’80′s, they might win or lose, but they were exciting.

I grew up in a house with 5 sisters. Only one of us passed the drivers test the first time, and that was me.
Additionally, I was the only one to wreck a car while in HS, too.

I think the list begins and ends with Jacksonville.

yes, though the dramas not there now that UCONN is in
March 7th, 2012 at 1:11 PM
I find it cathartic to yell at my radio. Alfred Williams is such a natural troll, he doesn’t even have to try. I bet he’s part of Anonymous.
March 7th, 2012 at 1:13 PM
Sounds like you’re not someone who bet them 50/1 at the beginning of the season to win the NC
March 7th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
watching on espn3.com right now
/well worth getting dual screens for the office
March 7th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
But they’re LOSING!!!!
March 7th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
I like this Denver scenario. If DEN could unload Tim for a 2nd and 4th that’d be worth it. Even a 2nd and something worse to JAX. You’ve made your Tebow jersey $$$. Just unload him and cut your losses for a sunk cost.
March 7th, 2012 at 1:17 PM
UConn getting all the calls. Shocker.
March 7th, 2012 at 1:18 PM
Knocking a guy down with a forearm to the chest is the most obvious offensive foul there is…not that one though, incredible

Teams that penetrate on most of their possessions will get fouled more than jump shooting teams. Happens with UConn every single year.
March 7th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
Gerard – you know a show is bad when it’s WORSE after “Stink” leaves. At least when he was on there was less room for D-Mac to interject his sports “knowledge.” I actually switched to 102.3 in the afternoon with Charles Johnson and some other dude, or I just listen to music. The only other option is two old guys on 93.7that put me to sleep.
March 7th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
UConn getting slaughtered on the boards, glorious to see.
March 7th, 2012 at 1:50 PM
We LSU fans had to suffer through the Woodley-Ensminger tag team. Kind of like the late-’70s version of Jefferson-Lee, only less horrible.
March 7th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
Still the greatest postseason game of all time
March 7th, 2012 at 1:54 PM
I’m totally addicted to that show because it is such a fiery accident on a daily basis.
March 7th, 2012 at 2:11 PM
My favorite prt of the insurance study is the quickly tossed in at the end line than men drive more miles. It might make a difference in perception if the ratio of miles driven to raw number of incidents was listed. I think we, as men, can figure at an actuarial table (because men are good at math, you see) enough to understand that you aren’t paying more for insurance than your wife because she’s the better driver, you’re paying more for insurance because you are more likely to be involved in a property damaging loss event. But the silly narrative-based approach works for the women folk.
