Obama reelection fear sparks gun sales
Hooray for living under irrational fear!
Newspapers lose $7 in print ads for every $1 they gain online. Yikes.
Hey now. I thought monetizing the ‘Net was the wave of the future, especially for news content. Evolve or die, old wave media.

Indiana Jones’ tenure application was denied
I feel this review applies 2012 archeological standards and forces them on his mid 30′s work. Also, I feel much of his work would be classified as an agent for the US Govt so some of this criticism, including the “Nazi scholar … who, I’m told, plummeted into a fathomless abyss at Dr. Jones’s hand” should not be held against his actual work for Marshall college. He should sue or take his work to a more esteemed school, like Faber.

Obama reelection fear sparks gun sales
As someone who owns several guns, this is absurd. NRA’s biggest donors are Winchester, Remington, etc. Creating fear means big profits for those companies. I’m not a member, but I receive letters from the NRA all the time and can’t believe people buy into their BS.
March 6th, 2012 at 9:06 AM
Agree w/much of the Wetzel article, but don’t really know what the solution is. There has to be some sort of administrative body to manage college athletics, but the NCAA has zero credibility at this point, assuming it ever did.

Will they be able to fix the issue of the most recent post on the main page being from noon yesterday?
An interesting way to get pageviews.
March 6th, 2012 at 9:11 AM
it’s the only way movie theaters turn profit since ticket sales normally just cover the cost of the film lease from the distribution company, which charges so much b/c the studios have jacked up their prices.
March 6th, 2012 at 9:11 AM

March 6th, 2012 at 9:20 AM
and studios are raising prices to make up losses from pirated films. so, essentially, the industry hit hardest by the impact of pirated films was the movie concession industry as more people are sneaking food and other snacks into the theatres and not buying at the counter.

agreed that Wetzel is the worst.

Could it be because movie studios overpay for Cameron Diaz style shitty acting, overpriced big budgeted movies and marketing that hypes horrible movies only to see those movies lose tens of millions of dollars?

Me thinks J-Mac doth protest too much regarding Ryan Braun. We need to get his urine sample, then have Spence keep it in his fridge for a efew day.
March 6th, 2012 at 9:29 AM
Until they price their movies correctly, this won’t change.
March 6th, 2012 at 9:30 AM
that does have something to do with it, i suppose. but most of those big budget action movies with huge marketing funds make their bank in the asian market, where the special effects are the draw and there’s no loss to the story with lack of dialogue to translate.
Ultimately we can all blame the MPAA for everything wrong with cinema today, so that’s where I’ll take my next argument.
March 6th, 2012 at 9:30 AM

Police say a central Pennsylvania man thanked and tried to high-five the officer who flagged him down for driving without his lights – only to then be arrested on a drunken driving charge.
Officer Adam Bonsell says 27-year-old Gerald C. Decker told him, ‘Thanks, buddy,’ and tried to high-five him.
Officer Bonsell told him, ‘That’s not how it works’ and asked him to step out of the car.

March 6th, 2012 at 9:41 AM
I’d be curious about the debt ratio on the present theatres. I’d presume tons of them were built since 1998 and that cost gets pushed into concession prices. At the time, I remember the profits from Titanic gave theaters a lot of extra cash to invest in theatre construction.
Theatres often get more profits from movies with sustained runs. So a movie that brings in $30 million in week 5 profits a theatre more than $30 million in opening weekend. I know these ratios change but a theatre often has to play by the rules of the studios. They’d all go bankrupt featuring indie slates.
March 6th, 2012 at 9:41 AM
I saw Lady Sybil in normal clothes with her hair down and just a little bit of makeup and she was stunning. I love Anna, but Sybil is beautiful.

I’ve heard good things as well, although the one episode I saw relied pretty heavily on the Obama impersonation. Hope they have a little more reach than Frank Caliendo.
March 6th, 2012 at 9:49 AM
depends… for example, Titanic and Avatar were released before Christmas and dominated against Oscar films, and they were so popular, they were able to stay in theatres long enough b/c they were still drawing profits into January and February, which is always a very, very weak field for competition.
but, theatres could keep those films in there since there were no other popular films coming out that would need that screen or two dedicated to those films.
the very rare film can sustain a run like that, but in most cases it isn’t profitable to keep a film longer than the lease you pulled from the distributor b/c you’re taking up a screen that would be better used for the hot new film that week.

He can be a bit racist at times, but his show is pretty damn funny. He has a fuck ton of staff members, though, so I wonder how much of the show is his stuff.
March 6th, 2012 at 9:56 AM
Tell her it’s a really good show and she should at least give it a shot. I don’t want to discuss plot points because it will just give good stuff away.
March 6th, 2012 at 9:57 AM
I was pumped for that show months ago when I saw a 4 minute preview. I thought the first episode was pretty good. I’m definitely sticking with it. The premise is really cool.
March 6th, 2012 at 9:57 AM
I’m in too. I dont know how long they can keep this kind of premise going, but I found it interesting. Liked how his 2 different cases tied together.

When does Game Of Thrones start? I need to catch up ondemand
April 1st. Season 1 out on blu-Ray/DVD.
March 6th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
Liked how his 2 different cases tied together.
Me too. I totally wasn’t expecting it to be a cop show on top of the main story arc. That was what really hooked me. Plus a solid cast of ‘that guys’ from other shows. And Wilmer but I can live with that I guess.

Less Asian psychologist, more wife and tennis coach. I don’t hate Wilmer, so he’s okay to be around for me.
March 6th, 2012 at 10:06 AM
After seeing the Season 2 trailer, I’ve realized I apparently need to rewatch S1.
March 6th, 2012 at 10:07 AM
Oh well this is sure to be a barrel of laughs. I’m guessing $28-30M over 5.
March 6th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
Rex, if it makes you feel any better, I found out about that story line before watching the 2nd season when I wiki’d the show. I don’t think it ruined my watching experience at all.
March 6th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
Yeah I wouldnt think I’d like Wilmer but he’s ok in that role. Law & Order SVU psych guy is good, but 24 President lady as the other psych is annoying. The son was also Jack’s son on Lost, so he’s good at playing the son of a confused dude.
March 6th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
Plus a solid cast of ‘that guys’ from other shows.
The lead in that show will always be the over the top bad guy from The Patriot.

Anything in the range of $5.0M to $5.5M per year is a win for the Leafs. .

I look at Tosh racism the same way I look at Chappele’s, where if I can laugh at it because it is so over the top, it’s ok.

Agreed. I don’t think it’s racist because he’s going for something so over-the-top and there’s no intent/malice.

I liked Awake for the most part, except that the breakthrough on the case was that he realized that the guy couldn’t see the alley that he claimed the shooter ran down from his window – wouldn’t that have been patently obvious to everyone from the start? Also, the parking lot dry spots thing was pretty lame, too. His partner’s irritation that he would be concerned with the parking spot behind the one with the blood drops seemed to be forced (as in, what’s the big deal – seems like a good lead to follow to me). I don’t know – I like the premise, but the police work part was a little thin. Maybe it needed to be in the first episode so they could set up the other side of the show.

Puts the Leafs at $56.7M for next year with 17 rostered players. Now they have to figure out Kulemin. Oh, they could probably use a goalie too. Maybe two.

Puts the Leafs at $56.7M for next year with 17 rostered players.
Based on Gary’s comments this week either a) the cap is going up or b) they will fight for salary rollbacks in the new CBA.
Plus a giant chunk of that money comes off the books after next year (Connolly, Lupul, MacArthur, Armstrong, Bozak, Steckel) and Leafs aren’t scared to bury guys in the minors.

$5.5 AAV for a Belorussian that’s never topped 29 in goals or 58 in points. But hey, great deal!
March 6th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
I was worried about that, but at the end of the first episode they showed some previews for the season and there seemed to be an interesting twist as to what caused the accident that makes me think they wont go that route.

March 6th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
i don’t think many people have a need for it yet since the tablet market hasn’t really defined itself yet. is it phasing out laptops, is it complimentary to laptops and desktops? is it powerful enough to handle some heavy duty creative apps people can use on the go in their respective fields, etc.

I understand that Mikhail Grabovski turned 28 about 6 weeks ago. He’ll be 34 when this contract runs out and is likely in the first of a few peak seasons. I understand that the Leafs are attempting to pay for future value (much like with Schenn… good luck with that). I also understand that paying for “upside” is a risk. And that there’s not more than 3 sure things on the Leafs current roster. I seem to comprehend that if both the Panthers and Jets make the playoffs this year, the Leafs will be the only franchise to not make the playoffs since the lockout. I understand that Leafs fans are impatient. Also, slightly off-kilter.
I understand why Mikhail Grabovski was just handed a bag of money. I just don’t they’ll get the upside they think they’re paying for.
March 6th, 2012 at 10:44 AM
I understand why Mikhail Grabovski was just handed a bag of money.
Look at the list of free agent this summer, consider signing from the last few summers, and tell me he doesn’t get more money on July 1. It’s not a “bag of money” in terms of the current salary cap structure.
I seem to comprehend that if both the Panthers and Jets make the playoffs this year, the Leafs will be the only franchise to not make the playoffs since the lockout.
So you advocate getting better by letting your best players go for nothing? Solid strategy, please send your resume to KLowe@EdmontonOilers.com.
March 6th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
We use the iPad a lot actually. I use it a lot at fantasy drafts to pull up stats and sites and it’s a lot more portable than a laptop. The wife plays games on it. Also having HBO GO is kind of awesome when taking a poop.

Fuck Leaf fans, nothing worse than getting hammered after work and taking the transit home to find it overrun with cretins dressed in blue and white begging you to explain how the subway works. There is only two lines you dumb fucks.
March 6th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
I understand that the Leafs are attempting to pay for future value
Isn’t that what all contracts should be about? Here’s a list of comparables. Explain how Grabovski is not a $5.5M player: Krejci, Plekanec, Booth, Leino, Cammaleri, Kunitz, Elias. (I could go on).
March 6th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
He gets more money on July 1st because there are 30 general managers in the NHL and not all of them are qualified to hold that position.
I don’t advocate letting him walk. I also don’t advocate a 20% overpay for a guy that hasn’t cracked 30 or 60.
March 6th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
i don’t think many people have a need for it yet since the tablet market hasn’t really defined itself yet. is it phasing out laptops, is it complimentary to laptops and desktops? is it powerful enough to handle some heavy duty creative apps people can use on the go in their respective fields, etc.
I think it has a nice in-between slot in our tech gamut between the cellphone and the laptop.
How much of your time in front of the computer is spent just viewing Youtube clips, browsing websites and reading blogs? Do you really need the computing power of a laptop to do that? To read TBL, view a movie or keep up with the news?
March 6th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
I also don’t advocate a 20% overpay for a guy that hasn’t cracked 30 or 60.
You keep saying it’s an overpay. Prove it, provide comparables.
March 6th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
The main gist of the linked article is that tablets are poised to overtake PCs.
Maybe it’s the contrarian in my, but I feel the same about smartphones. People don’t differentiate between “want” and “need”.
March 6th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
There’s 4 of them on Chicago’s roster. They all signed before the cap got bumped but they’ve all cracked 60 or 30. Some of them multiple times. Hell, one of them has a 50 goal season and makes LESS than Grabovski will.
March 6th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
I bought a Kindle Fire. Perfect little tablet for the family. Kids like it, wife likes it, and cost me $175 on an open box from Best Buy. iPads are nice, but not worth the money, IMO.
March 6th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
If anyone last night doubted my sincerity in saying I’ve kicked the Saints to the curb, I present further evidence of why they now have my enmity.
March 6th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
Why do you need to buy a $500 iPad when you can get 80% of the features from a $200 Kindle Fire? Or 120% of the features from a $500 laptop?

Sharp has a career high 71 points at $5.9M cap hit.
Please tell me you’re not comparing Hossa’s 12 year contract to this 5 year contract? The one where he makes $7.9M cash in the first 7 years?
Kane and Toews were coming off ELC’s, apples to bananas.
Try again.
March 6th, 2012 at 10:59 AM

The only thing that bothers me about the tablet revolution is that for 99% of owners, it’s a device that is only about consuming, not creating.
That being said, I’m not about to make a judgement call about what people “need”. We all have the latest HDTVs and smart phones among a million other things that make us little piggy consumers. People should buy what they want.

That 12 year deal will be 9 or 10 because he’ll retire when making the $1M in salary the final two years. The loopholes are there, take advantage.
I’d rather have Grabovski than Sharp, sure. Only because of the birthdates. Sharp still puts up better numbers than Grabovski.
March 6th, 2012 at 11:04 AM
That 12 year deal will be 9 or 10 because he’ll retire when making the $1M in salary the final two years. The loopholes are there, take advantage.
Sure, but you can’t compare Hossa’s contract to this Grabovski deal in terms of simply cap hit, without mentioning why his cap hit is so low.
