March Madness 2012: The Davidson Wildcats Are Dancing in the NCAA Tournament
We’ll be doing NCAA Tournament profiles for all automatic bid conference winners leading up to Selection Sunday, for links to others, see bottom of this post.
Conference: Southern Conference (25-7)
Location: Davidson, North Carolina
Famous Alum: Vince Foster, former Clinton Deputy White House Counsel, Alex Gibbs, renowned NFL offensive line coach. Woodrow Wilson attended but like Stephen Curry, left early.
They’re Back! This is the first time that Davidson has been back to the tournament since their run to the Elite 8 in 2008 with Stephen Curry. They have 10 prior appearances.
Resume: A big win over Kansas. Losses to Wichita State, Duke, and Vanderbilt. 16-2 record in winning the Southern Conference.
Notable Player(s): Forward De’Mon Brooks leads the team in points and rebounds.
Team Style/Strengths: Davidson has pretty good size for a smaller school. Chris Czerapowicz and Jake Cohen join Brooks on the front line and are all 6’7″ or taller. The Wildcats rely on beating their opponents on the board, so we will see if that continues when competition steps up in the tournament. They are a young team with no senior starters, so they should be in contention next year as well.
All-Important Rankings: 62 (RPI), 66 (Pomeroy)
Projected Outlook/Seed: With other mid-major upsets, I think Davidson has now moved up to a 13 seed, outside possibility as the “top” 14 seed.

Are we allowed to make fun of the crappy seeded games played by teams who have zero shot of winning the tournament in these parts the same way the crappy bowl games are made fun of…or is that taboo?
March 6th, 2012 at 4:27 PM
You mean like the VCU/USC play in game last year where the winner went to the Final 4?

I believe the NCAA men’s college basketball tournament has just been dismissed.

Auburn at 7?
Definite W: ULM, Ole Miss, New Mexico State, Alabama A&M
Likely W: @ Vanderbilt, Texas A&M
Likely L: Clemson, Arkansas, UGA
Definite L: LSU, @ Alabama
Toss-up: @ Miss. State
I think we definitely win 6, probably win 7, and have a real shot at beating Clemson, Arkansas, or Georgia.

it is obviously you who needs to google vince foster if those are the jokes you’re making. There’s a wealth of terrible material you can do about this guy before resorting to the name game.

So Spencer, about my golf swing…
March 6th, 2012 at 4:33 PM
yea…now im sad. thanks dirt.

what about it?
March 6th, 2012 at 4:33 PM
Vince Foster > David Foster Wallace
March 6th, 2012 at 4:35 PM
I don’t know enough about TAMU to say either way, but I think Vandy could be more of a tossup than a likely win since it’s at Vandy and they finally have a decent looking QB.

David Foster Wallace
my brother gave me that tennis book, and I read the whole thing. When I was finished, I told him how dreadful I thought it was, and he said “the joke’s on you, I didn’t like it either.” He gave it to me because it was really heavy, and I was going to read it on the subway for more than a month.

Last year: inside line that developed into a flat swing. Pure shots I hit a high draw. Miss was a pull hook left or a shank. The shanks got to me so I had to change.
This year: Working on keeping swing path on a straight back line. My new miss is a blocked cut where I really get stuck. Have no idea how to fix. Need help.
March 6th, 2012 at 4:37 PM
Clemson? Maybe as it is Clemson, but UGA and ARK are fucking that shit up for the second straight year.
March 6th, 2012 at 4:37 PM
If we lose to A&M at home, I’ll probably have to kill myself. I debated for a second about Vandy & I think it will be a close game but…we’ll win.
March 6th, 2012 at 4:38 PM
Wow. Literary trolling. That is epic.

1. smoke a bowl of the marijuana pot
2. ???
3. birdies
March 6th, 2012 at 4:39 PM
sounds like i need to golf with Rex…
March 6th, 2012 at 4:41 PM
Don’t smoke. But I’ve tried Budweiser, Coors, Bud Light, Coors Light, bourbon, and girlies…no luck as of yet.
March 6th, 2012 at 4:42 PM
Sounds about right. Vandy at home is a tricky beast at times. Hell, they held Bama to 14 points in the first half this year. They had a pretty good D actually. No clue how many players they lose though.
March 6th, 2012 at 4:42 PM
I can’t golf drunk. Not one bit. I can after some Bob, though.

Whenever someone asks me if I’ve read him I just say yes and try to change the subject.
March 6th, 2012 at 4:44 PM
*I haven’t read him though. I don’t have Hipstamatic.

you’re still gonna wanna bring the club to the inside, and i have a similar tendency for the block too. when i was at the range on saturday, everytime i hit this weak block, it was because i was keeping my arms pinned to my torso and not getting any extension.
what i did to fix this on the range was by focusing on two things…going back, id want to feel like i was getting as much extension as i could down the line without shifting my torso and hips. then id start the transition by really firing my hips…i felt like the block was caused by too much traffic around impact and both these moves create space.
on saturday, typically the next post-blocked shot was a hook that flew my target by a good 10 yards (only had this problem with the mid and long irons), since it was such an extreme reaction to the block, but helped create more room later on. just a quick fix…but if you’re blocking a lot of shots to the right, it’s because you’re not creating enough room through impact…either because you’re not extending enough on the backswing or you’re not clearing your hips enough.
March 6th, 2012 at 4:48 PM
Ritty: Vandy actually loses very little. Two starters on offense (TE and RT) and they lose four starters on defense (DE, LB, DB and S). Not too shabby at all.
March 6th, 2012 at 4:48 PM
it’s all in the hips. come on now, baby.
March 6th, 2012 at 4:48 PM
feel like i needed to clarify…i was shifting my torso and hips like normal, but not moving laterally. that’s what i meant by the bolded section.
March 6th, 2012 at 4:50 PM
Sounds about right. I think I know what to do, I just can’t actually do it on the course. I really try to emphasize the hip turn but I have a tendency to dip with my right side instead of turning which exaggerates the block.
March 6th, 2012 at 4:51 PM
Great. I’m glad we catch them late in October then. Hopefully we’ll have meshed with out new systems.
March 6th, 2012 at 4:53 PM
You get them at the right time. They play at Mizzou and host Florida the two weeks before playing host to Auburn.
March 6th, 2012 at 4:57 PM
Didn’t Wilson actually coach there too?
March 6th, 2012 at 4:58 PM
Basically.
That “oh look how CUTE IS THIS LETTER to his college paper!” link that was making the rounds a week or so back made me want to dig up his corpse and sell it piecemeal in Asia.
March 6th, 2012 at 4:59 PM
My bad — that was Wesleyan.
March 6th, 2012 at 4:59 PM
I completely forgot Davidson beat Kansas.
March 6th, 2012 at 5:03 PM
These team capsules are sweet, hopefully there are no pictures of athlete peen being texted/twittered in the next few days so they don’t get bumped…
March 6th, 2012 at 5:13 PM
nothing about golfing drunk is fun for me. I am awful at it so I don’t even try. a couple beer limit is what I set myself at. and usually cheef on every par 3.
March 6th, 2012 at 5:15 PM
oh yea…but a little squat isn’t a bad thing, despite what everyone says about tiger. trevino and gary player and rory all squat in the downswing.
this image helped HUGE when learning how to turn the hips right.

I need smarter friends. I doubt that any of them even know who David Foster Wallace is/was.
