Watch Young Bill Simmons Wave to an Injured Michael Cooper at the Boston Garden in 1985
Game six of the 1985 NBA Finals. Boston’s attempting to repeat as NBA champs a year after defeating the Lakers. After the Memorial Day Massacre (Boston 148, LA 114) in game one, everyone thought it was over. But LA fought back behind the phenomenal play of 37-old Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who would go on to win MVP honors. In the decisive 6th game, one of the league’s best defenders, Michael Cooper, was carried off the court and yes, that’s Bill Simmons waving to Coop on his way off the floor.
Historical note: Boston beat Houston for the title in 1986, and then the Lakers beat the Celtics in the Finals in 1987. As old people – or anyone over 32 – like to say, “those were the days.” For a decade, either the Lakers or Celtics were in the NBA Finals. [video via Drew Unga]

What the hell kind of wave was that? Pretty effeminate and twerpy.

I’m chuckling at Simmons’ painters cap, because I’m about his age and vividly remember when they were a big fashion statement.
The 80′s were weird.

Didn’t the Lakers and Celtics just meet in the finals 2 out of 3 years?

And his dad was a teacher or some shit?
No way the Simmons family wasn’t mobbed up.

Back then either the Lakers orCeltics would add an older veteran that would play great for the year and help them win the championship. Hard to think that prior to the Lakers/Clts playing in the finals almost each year, the NBA back then was having their games on CBS late night on tape delay..

Big fashion statement, might be a bit of a stretch, but I certainly remember when they were popular for some reason.

deacon blues…the arrangement, it’s just perfect. like, i know music is subjective and means something different to everyone, but i think that everyone can appreciate music that sounds “correct.” not correct in terms of theory or some other metric, but in the sense that when you hear a song, you get the sense that every single note is deliberate and the artists care to the point where they’ll rehearse with a fine toothed comb to make sure it’s as clear audibly as the vision in their heads.
that song’s been blowing my mind. the arrangement is complex harmonically and rhythmically, but it all fits and is all executed perfectly. it’s as flawless as a symphony.

they are corny as fuck tho.

Yeah, they went having the high front hat then to wide-ass hat brim today. Goofy-ass on both accounts.

Simmons must come from some money to have pulled seats like that. Explains the smugishness.
March 5th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
He explains how his dad got the seats in Book of Basketball. I don’t really remember the story though.

I think his dad was a superintendent of a school for awhile — Simmons went to a prep school and Holy Cross, not exactly coming from the poor house.
March 5th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
A superintendant
March 5th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
Essentially, they were very very cheap in like 1973 or so, and he kept getting grandfathered in to better seats. The price kept going up, too, but his dad kept paying it.

Anybody interesting hurling for the Reds today, Nick? They’re on TV, that’s why I ask. Latos or Chapman would be nice to watch.
March 5th, 2012 at 11:05 AM
Also, he would have bought those seats originally in the 1970s when they weren’t expensive…wasn’t really till late 1980s/MJ era where sitting in lower deck at an NBA game was a social event and the tickets became outrageous.
March 5th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
Supernintendo Simmons.
March 5th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
Sorry; not sure about that. I never get too involved in spring training. I’ll wait for the real games to start.

His dad was Mark Twain.

Have no idea what this is in reference to (too lazy to read the old comments), but whatever it is, I approve.
Also, blood oranges are the tits.

Shit, I think my best of Steely Dan is being held hostage by my broken glove box.

Boston, LA, AND Philly (for most of the decade, Detroit for the rest). Those were the days!
March 5th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
Back then, he was just a douchey Celtic fan.
These days, he is a douchey Celtic fan with a platform.

Steely Dan’s Brooklyn (Owes The Charmer Under Me) and Chain Lighting need to be added to any list of SD songs.

That just looked awkward.
March 5th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
who is bill simmons?
March 5th, 2012 at 5:35 PM
Simmons step dad is loaded. His first car was a Porsche.
March 5th, 2012 at 5:37 PM
Oh for the days when nobodies could get court-side seats at an NBA finals.
Simmons should have been in 16 Candles. He would have been perfect as one of the geeks in the bathroom that pay Anthony Michael Hall to see Sam’s panties.
/floppy’d disc.

I wanna add Josie and Time Out of Mind to that list.
