Weekly Top Five: Wilt, LeBron, UCLA, Simmons and Obama, and Other Stuff
Each week Stephen “Bust Her” Douglas and I will recap some of the bigger stories from the lively week in athletics. It’s a completely original idea that we started over two years ago. Every time this post appears, something happens at Ye Olde Abortion Clinic. As always, please remember to be as irrational as possible when interacting with your fellow TBL commenters.
Yeah, that’s Kate Upton. Again.
1. Wilt Chamberlain
TSH — Fifty years ago today the great Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points for the Philadelphia Warriors in a win over the New York Knicks. During that historic season, he averaged an obscene 50 points and 25 rebounds a game. Perhaps Chamberlain’s storied reputation for bedding every female on the planet including your mom tends to overshadow just how dominant he was on the court. What an amazing player.
CRM — Wilt Chamberlain is one of the few players who is just synonymous with the game of basketball. Of course, he’s also synonymous with fuckin’. He’s an American legend.
2. LeBron James is Ridiculous
TSH — LeBron James is playing out of his mind and should run away with the MVP. But since he reportedly does things like command waiters to cut his steak for him, the voting will probably end up closer than it should be. And don’t say it’s too early, the man is on a mission and I don’t see anything slowing him down. [Heat fans may now prepare a biting batch of hate mail so it's ready to send once Bronnie goes down with an injury. Apologies for the jinx.]
CRM — LeBron is the most talented basketball player on the planet and one of the top 5 passers in the history of the game. Have you looked at LeBron’s career numbers? His worst season was 20.9 points, 5.9 assists and 5.5 rebounds. He was 19.
3. UCLA “Scandal”
TSH — Did Reeves Nelson gather Tyler Honeycutt’s clothes into a pile and proceed to urinate on them? We may never know, but pissing on something you’re not supposed to piss on, particularly someone else’s bed, is a signature part of the college experience. I don’t see why this is a big deal.
CRM — You can be rest assured that the O’Bannon brothers would not have put up with any of this bullshit.
4. A.J. Burnett, Officially a Pirate
TSH — Fracturing an orbital bone sounds awfully painful, but it’s still difficult for me to detach the humor of Burnett being traded to the Pirates and immediately suffering an injury that will keep him out 8 weeks. It’s going to be terribly sad day when the Pirates are no longer the best, most reliable comedian in all of baseball.
CRM — That must have hurt like a mofo. I’ll always remember Burnett being on a championship team in Florida and then sucking in New York. That’s how all baseball players should be remembered.
5. Bill Simmons & President Obama
TSH — I really enjoyed most of this interview. When you stop for a minute or two and think about Bill Simmons and his astronomical rise to the top of the mountain, it’s truly a remarkably inspiring story. But come on, Bill, no tie at the White House? I very much prefer the suit with no tie look when you can get away with it, but you’re sitting down with the President of the United States. Come on, brother, dress accordingly.
CRM — 25 minutes? Who is Obama kidding? Dude plays basketball every day and he can’t take a full hour out of his schedule for Simmons? What an up and down weekend for Simmons and Grantland. The Malice at the Palace piece was awesome and Simmons sat down with the President. On the other hand, Grantland couldn’t get media credentials for the Duke-Carolina game.
Honorable Mention
Michel Beasley, thoughtful teammate … a fucking hat!

This Week in Retarded Pictures of Snooki
TSH — Snooki’s pregnant. Whether it’s a boy or girl, she shall name it Rikishi. Additionally, missing from Snooki’s gigantic square earrings are two overly chatty parrots.
CRM — She’s going to look like an animal print fitness ball in 6 months.

I haven’t been trying new beers lately. Been in a big time scotch and ice mindset for a few months now. But when I was at Lake Tahoe last weekend, I had a Prohibition Ale. It was an American Amber…delicious.

ark, the angry rap is good, but the groovy, boasting about skills with women and music rap is a different type of good.
a brother made me a mix tape in 1990 of stuff he listened to, and it’s awesome…krs-one, de la soul, big daddy, kool moe, slick rick, afrika bambaata, mony love, queen latifah, on and on…..q-tip’s group, professor something or other…

Hardly any snow in Stateline itself, except for in the shade. I have no complaints about that though, the weather was absolutely amazing the entire time we were there.
Went skiing last Saturday. You’re right, there wasn’t much fresh snow. I was a little disappointed with Heavenly. Their trails are too narrow and there were too many people there (even early in the morning). Their signage and trail marking was also awful. Lots of ice and not much powder. So it wasn’t the most fun skiing I’ve ever had, but still a good time. I didn’t really get my legs back underneath me until towards the end of the morning. I forgot how much skiing takes it out of you.
Overall really good time. One of my friends made a killing on the Dirty Dancing Video Slot machine at Harrah’s. Got to walk around town and go to a few local bars. Did a lot of gambling and a day of skiing. Next time I’d like to get a boat and go out on the lake itself.

There were a TON of Giants fans around town. Made me remember what part of the country I was in.

mccovey, tito fuentes…that era. funny, i was an a’s fan. not sure if it was beczause of their success in the early 70s or the unis
March 2nd, 2012 at 5:53 PM
this is what makes me angry over rich people. they eat well done steak and mix great booze with soda. two things that would get you shot 100 years ago in the right area.
March 2nd, 2012 at 5:54 PM
i’ve turned into a !! user. i don’t like peppy people so i’my a hypocrite
March 2nd, 2012 at 5:54 PM
The other thing about being around the lake is that it made me realize how pictures just do not do justice to pretty views. When we went down to the lake, the sky was practically cobalt blue and the water was choppy and blue….I took a few pictures with my iPhone and looked at them and it just couldn’t capture how amazing it was there. Just means I have to travel more.

I look with disgust upon people who order a took well done or who add a mixer to good booze. These people don’t deserve nice things.
March 2nd, 2012 at 5:55 PM
Heavenly isn’t the greatest place to go, it’s just really convenient being right next to the casinos and “downtown” stateline. Better resorts for the actual skiing and/or boarding would be Northstar, Sierra at Tahoe or Sugar Bowl.
Only 4 hours from the Bay Area, a lot of people go up there. There are also a lot of Giants “fans” in the Sacramento area because the A’s suck. They’ll root for the A’s minor league team (Sacramento River Cats) but go with the Giants for pro.
March 2nd, 2012 at 5:55 PM
took=steak.
I’m wiped today. Can’t write at all.
March 2nd, 2012 at 5:57 PM
You know what else doesn’t do justice? Saying that Lake Tahoe is fucking COLD. That’s some cold ass fucking water up there, even in the middle of summer.

That was basically why we went with them as we were staying at Harvey’s. The nice thing was that the Embassy Suites a block away had its own gondola to the lodge and base area for Heavenly. Both on the way up and the way down we left a noxious fume for the people who were getting in after us.
March 2nd, 2012 at 5:57 PM
Still alive guys, sorry to disappoint!
Also… just read the PK article on the Saints. Even more than bounties from a player, the part about off-the-book bonuses is the most damning. I’m trying to decide if all the outrage will make people hate the Pats less. I assume not.

It was in the high 50s when we were there, but with the wind it was still very cold and crisp. My friends couldn’t have paid me to even put a leg in.
March 2nd, 2012 at 5:59 PM
When ordering a steak, medium is the true well done. Medium rare is perfect.
March 2nd, 2012 at 5:59 PM
It sounded very comfortable but the content seemed rehearsed, like Simmons wrote out what he should talk about to be non-controversial. If it was spontaneous and genuine answers, I’d be surprised and impressed.

Exactly. It is insulting to the animal who died to give you this cut of meat to then broil the bejesus out of it so that it dries up and has no flavor.
March 2nd, 2012 at 6:02 PM
ms, if you like natural beauty…before you have kids, you and the wife need to look into trips into the wilderness with NOLS or Outward Bound. amazing natural beauty up close, personal and you get exercise
one thelonius…buzzed

i don’t care one way or the other (i’m no wwos), but how in the world do you type took when you mean steak? maybe from a phone, but a keyboard?
i e-mailed bowen about the saints thing
March 2nd, 2012 at 6:04 PM
You assume correct, the Saints mean nothing to me. Pats hate will continue on! haha
March 2nd, 2012 at 6:04 PM
whoa… did we talk about this? http://gannettblog.blogspot.com/2012/03/usat-sports-said-in-top-down.html
March 2nd, 2012 at 6:05 PM
I would put Kirkwood and Squaw at the top of my lists. I mostly go to Homewood.
The water isn’t terrible in the summer. If it’s hot out, the water is great.
March 2nd, 2012 at 6:06 PM
i don’t care one way or the other (i’m no wwos), but how in the world do you type took when you mean steak? maybe from a phone, but a keyboard?
Nope, still at work. No idea how I managed to do that.

Smart man, smart man.
March 2nd, 2012 at 6:07 PM
That’s the one I couldn’t remember!
March 2nd, 2012 at 6:07 PM
That’s some cold ass fucking water up there, even in the middle of summer.
snow melt. the NOLS thing I told ms about…lots of chances to jump in mountain streams and lakes that were freezing in june/july (wyoming’s wind river range). god damn, there is no feeling like jumping in near-freezing water, you actually are surprised that your heart doesn;t stop
March 2nd, 2012 at 6:08 PM

I don’t know what about that inspires a ‘whoa’, but no I haven’t seen it discussed.
March 2nd, 2012 at 6:11 PM
Oh and btw, I’m not leaving this thread as long as the lovely Kate Upton keeps showing up every time I refresh.
March 2nd, 2012 at 6:11 PM
oh, and if it ain’t the mountains and wildflowers and color of the lakes during the day, the stars at night, in the middle of the wilderness are mindblowing….a fucking carpet of them and the sky is like a dome
March 2nd, 2012 at 6:12 PM
funny beef, i don;t have to refresh…when i comment and hit submit, it refreshes and loads back to the end of the thread, so i don’t see the top.
March 2nd, 2012 at 6:13 PM
That sounds pretty nice vez. I’ve only been to Yosemite once and I loved it. I brought my bike with me and just cruised all over that place, it was amazing. I went in February too, so there was still some snow melting which led to seeing a lot of waterfalls.

Am I interpreting it wrong? USA Today just bought a sports blog and is making all their sports people re-apply for their own jobs at lower salary?
/draw your own conclusions
March 2nd, 2012 at 6:15 PM
Well yeah, it does that when I comment too. I’m just saying that sometimes I refresh to see if others have said anything else, and it also allows me to see her more.

It sounded like it was underway before the recent acquisition of FSV. But what do I know. Certainly not enough to have pulled in low seven figures at any point in my life this far.
March 2nd, 2012 at 6:16 PM
My guess would be that they’re referring to their direct staff, the writers in their papers and on their websites.
March 2nd, 2012 at 6:17 PM
Not sure if this is Duckworth’d, but just got this email from WaPo about the Skins bounty system:

usa today is a newspaper biz at its heart and you know how that niche has done the past decade. my ‘guy’ at usa today who gave me freelance assignments was laid off last year, and before his layoff their freelance budget dried up. last usat byline? 2007

williams was with the skins awhile back right? (didn;t read link)
March 2nd, 2012 at 6:23 PM
So TBL guys teabagged each other and pissed in each other’s beds in college? USF and Slippery Rock are my guesses.
March 2nd, 2012 at 6:24 PM
vezina – yeah, and he was doing the same shit in washington. this should get real, real interesting…
March 2nd, 2012 at 6:27 PM
can’t wait for bowen’s reaction
