Tony Dungy Blamed Peyton Manning’s Current Neck Problems on a Hit Against Washington in 2006, When Gregg Williams Was Coach [VIDEO]
I
n a story by Cindy Boren of the Washington Post that ran back in September, just as we were learning about the severity of Peyton Manning’s neck surgeries, Tony Dungy knew when the origins of these issues first arose. Speaking with Peter King on NBC, Dungy pinpointed it to a game against Washington back in 2006.
Dungy recalled that Manning’s neck was wrenched and his helmet ripped off when he took a low hit by Andre Carter, followed by a high hit by Phillip Daniels. The anecdote was relayed by King, who said that Manning stretched his neck when he got up and shook his right arm “as if trying to get the feeling back in it.”
Why is this significant? Well, 2006 was the third season where Gregg Williams served as the defensive coordinator. We’ve just learned in the aftermath of the news of the Bounty program breaking, that the Washington Redskins had a similar system when Williams was there. It’s also notable that the player involved, Phillip Daniels, was also the only one to go on the record defending Williams in that story today. According to Manning, Daniels “wouldn’t let go of my head” and he was later fined $5,000 for his actions (anyone want to inquire and see if he got reimbursed by Williams for that fine?).
So, as the news about the bounties emerge regarding the Saints in 2009 taking out Kurt Warner in his final game, and in targeting Brett Favre to knock him out of the game, it’s very possible that Gregg Williams’ actions as a leader of men in pushing these bounties led to knocking one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time out of the game and shortening his career.

Said something about this on Twitter earlier. When he took the hit, it was frightening and I thought his season was over, for sure. Then he threw three TD’s in the third quarter and I relaxed. But as we’re learning, in the NFL, these hits have a way of winning the war.
March 2nd, 2012 at 7:37 PM
people in chicago are looking at the beating cutler and bennett took against the saints this year or last…cutler was sacked 6 times, knocked down 11, kicked in throat once. bennett carted off (cha-ching!)
of course, that could be awful o-line play too
March 2nd, 2012 at 7:53 PM
But as we’re learning, in the NFL, these hits have a way of winning the war.
when Peyton Manning shoots himself in the chest, it will be so the autopsy can focus on his neck, and earn him a posthumous 2nd super bowl ring?
March 2nd, 2012 at 7:58 PM
Could get him some MVP votes
March 2nd, 2012 at 8:00 PM
Here’s the hit, by the way.
March 2nd, 2012 at 8:03 PM
Here’s the hit, by the way.
whoever the top guy is was obviously trying to hurt him. But nearly everybody who ever gets their hands on Manning is. That was pretty egregious, though.
I liked Florio’s trolling suggestion that the league take not only draft choices from the Saints, but this year’s franchise tag. That guy is way better at being a dick than the guy who runs this rat trap.
March 2nd, 2012 at 8:04 PM
well aint this some bullshit…i came here thinking dungy was acting holier than thou, and i love me some violence, but damn is gregg williams a twat.
March 2nd, 2012 at 8:05 PM

that was also true.

Doug Farrar suggesting lifetime ban for Williams. Doubt it will happen but it would be funny.

Pretty certain he hurt his neck by constantly gawking at some empty mantle space reserved for the Heisman.
March 2nd, 2012 at 8:30 PM
I dont know why this made me laugh so hard. I was just browsing Target clearance. Temporary price cut!
March 2nd, 2012 at 8:30 PM
I agree. Hard to watch. Kick Greg Williams out of the league.
March 2nd, 2012 at 8:34 PM
I don’t know, call me human, but I couldn’t intentionally try to break someone’s neck or take them out to where it would effect the rest of their life unless they were trying to do the same to me..”So you want me to break his knee to where it compound fractures and shit, coach? And I wont have to do windsprints AND pick the team movie this week? YOU GOT IT.”
March 2nd, 2012 at 8:35 PM
Another thing I realized while watching that video: I really miss watching Peyton Manning play football.

March 2nd, 2012 at 9:11 PM
It’s football. Gruesome, dirty, treacherous and bad to the mother fucking bone. NFL tries to hide it. This is the reality.
March 2nd, 2012 at 9:57 PM
it can be all those things without people trying to paralyze each other
March 2nd, 2012 at 10:09 PM
Kicking Gregg Williams out of the NFL is a hilarious idea. I fully support it.
March 2nd, 2012 at 10:18 PM
If he was literally encouraging his players to (in theory) commit crimes, then I actually don’t find it all that ludicrous.
March 2nd, 2012 at 10:37 PM
I just sent my resume to Jeff Fisher.
March 2nd, 2012 at 10:40 PM
How many witch hunts are now ongoing for suspected “headhunter” D-coordinators? This could end up being bad for not only the Saints, but the whole league.

Yet Spygate will still be looked at in a worse light.

Lebron going nuts in Utah right now. Just playing ridiculous good basketball.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:26 PM
A different light, each individually harsh.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:31 PM
Holy shit Devin Harris?!
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:31 PM
What part of that is sensationalized?
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:34 PM
…well. Cue the “Lebron passed again” crowd.
/it was a good pass, and Haslem got a pretty open shot.
//Lebron was fucking on fire. What. the. fuck. HE SHOT 16-24! TAKE THE FUCKING SHOT.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:35 PM
Heat lose. LeBron made the right play and passed the ball, Haslem missed the shot. Bron Bron made two big time shots with a minute left in the game. Wade blew 2 free throws. LeBron choked.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:38 PM
Yea. But if he would just shoot the god damn ball in that situation, everyone could shut the fuck up. But he passed again. I’m just not OK with it. I’m not so sure it’s the right play when you’re shooting that well (and some of the shots he was taking were just crazy).
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:41 PM
TBL’s post tomorrow writes itself.
Lebron is having an all time season. People are fucking morons.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:41 PM
Personally, I want the guy that’s shooting 55% on the season and shot 16-24 on the night taking a shot from anywhere on the court with the game on the line rather than a role player.
/”It’s the right basketball play” just isn’t a fucking excuse in this situation. I disagree. It’s not.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:43 PM
Not disputing this. He’s ridiculous, and it’s incredible to watch. But that’s sort of the point in this situation. Haslem shouldn’t even smell the ball there, especially since Lebron could have rose up off the dribble for basically the same shot that Haslem took.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:49 PM
Making the right play is never an excuse. Its not like he threw the ball to Joel Anthony. Haslem makes that shot enough to trust him with it, especially when he’s wide open.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:51 PM
Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, et all would take the final shot in a game winning situation.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:52 PM
I think my points regarding this: “shooting 55% on the season and shot 16-24 on the night” combined with this: “Lebron could have rose up off the dribble for basically the same shot that Haslem took.” pretty much make the argument I meant to make. You can ignore the other stuff which is just frustration.
Haslem shooting roughly the same shot Lebron could have taken with the game on the line is beyond borderline stupid basketball.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:52 PM
Oh hi, I’ve got evidence to suggest otherwise.
But I guess the NBA Championship winning game is less important of a situation than the regular season.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:54 PM
He is definetly made the right play!
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:55 PM
I disagree. I would be willing to bet that, down the road, people look at Spygate worse.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:59 PM
Love that, didn’t include the sound clip where in the huddle beforehand Jordan’s telling Kerr he knows what defense is coming and if they double “Be ready”…the man was clearly scared of the big spot
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:59 PM
Re: LeBron
Is he the Pippen to Wade’s Jordan?
How much bigger of a sample size do we need to confirm that he doesn’t want the last shot?
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:01 AM
No because Pippen was never a much better player than Jordan…I’d say he’s more Magic to Wade’s Worthy or something along those lines even if the positions don’t match up
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:02 AM
I remember all those games where Jordan missed a big shot, missed the back end of his free throws, and committed a foul in the last minute and Pippen was bailing him out each time.
Get the fuck out of here with that.

March 3rd, 2012 at 12:02 AM
Kerr was shooting 53% from the field that season, and Jordan was double teamed. There are certainly situations in which the best player on the team needs to pass the ball. I didn’t mean to imply otherwise, although I think I accidentally did. Regardless, Lebron should not be passing in this situation, primarily for the reasons I’ve already pointed out.
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:04 AM
chicago I’m not really arguing with you. I’d like to see Lebron take the shot but I think he made the right play too.
Just saying that people who say this says something about wrong are fucking morons.
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:05 AM
says something about Lebron*
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:05 AM
I can understand wanting to see LeBron take that last shot in order for him to prove a point as a fan. But his mindset as a player should be about making the right play. He dribbled the ball and got his teammate a wide open shot at the top of the key. You say he could have risen up above the two defenders. Maybe, maybe not. Josh Howard just blocked his jumpshot a few plays before that. He also could of had the ball stripped on his way up.
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:05 AM
So the bottom line on LeBron is that he’s the best player on the court for 59 minutes. Then he defers to his 1A) in the last 60 seconds.
What is the modern day comparison? Someone who (clearly) can dominate the entire game except when it comes to making the game-winning play.
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:05 AM
I think Darrell already mentioned it, but Lebron hit two big shots and Wade missed two FTs and (I think) fouled Devin Harris at the end. Wade sort of lost that game. And it can’t be stated enough how amazing Lebron’s level of play is right now.
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:06 AM
The only way he can win is to make a forced jumper…if he misses someone freezes the screen and points out a wide open teammate who could have taken the shot
But you’re all missing the biggest takeaway from the game tonight: Devin Harris has returned to glory
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:07 AM
You clearly did not watch this game. Holy shit that could not be further from what happened.
Jesus.
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:08 AM
Just like Haslem could have missed the shot, or get blocked or stripped by his nearby defender? I know you have to see my point, which I think is highly logical. I’d rather take my risks with Lebron in that situation on a night when he’s playing even better than the amazing that he’s been playing all season than with my role player, Haslem.
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:10 AM
I did not watch the game. Not a second of it. That opinion was based on what I’ve seen in the past 8 years.
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:12 AM
Then why are you talking?
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:12 AM
I know. I think that as a basketball fan, I’m just incredibly frustrated. Keep in mind that I’ve always hated Lebron and yet I find myself just rooting for him to fully break through. All he had to do was pull up and shoot.
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:14 AM
Just for the record, I watched the entire second half, which is probably why I have strong opinions on it right now. I’m also a little drunk, and it’s tornadoing by where I live, so shit is getting a bit real over here.
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:15 AM
I mean you can make that argument all you want, but tonight does not support it. If anything, it shows who the real leader of this team is.
It sure as fuck is not Wade.
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:15 AM
The conversation started about why LeBron passed the ball at the end of the game. I made my comment based on that.
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:17 AM
I guess at the end of the day, I’d rather have a guy who is a closer versus one who can fill up the stat sheet.
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:19 AM
I’d rather my playmaker make the right play, which in this case he did.
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:19 AM
Can we just settle this by blaming Eric Spoelstra?
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:22 AM
I’ve sincerely given solid reasons why I feel that Lebron did not make the right play. All you’ve done is say that he did make the right play, without giving me any reasons why this is the case. This is why it is usually very dumb to argue with you. Please tell me why it’s the right play, without ignoring all the points I’ve already made.
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:33 AM
He took a couple of dribbles, drew a double team and got a teammate who is capable of hitting a shot from the top of the key a wide open shot from the top of the key. You can only assume he would have risen above the double team to get off a shot. At the very least, it would have been highly contested. Haslem just missed the shot. Shit happens.
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:35 AM
all you pussies calling for williams head are imbeciles this shit goes on at the pee-wee football level only you get a sticker and some extra quarters at the pizza party…kindly STFU
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:37 AM
also re: Lebron, I wish fucking Kobe would give the ball up some times
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:39 AM
Watch the replay and tell me where the double was. There was a guy in the vicinity in front of Lebron and a guy that he just beat off the dribble. You mean to tell me the 6’8″ guy with a 40+” vertical might have risen above a defender like he had been all night on his way to 16-24 shooting? Come on man. I just want him to take the damn shot. This would have been the perfect spot to do so. I’m going to bed, it’s been fun.
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:42 AM
the double team was when both the waiter and bus bot tried to cut his well-done fillet mignon with ketchup on it
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:42 AM
He scored 17 in the 4th and was carrying the Heat to a victory while just on fire pretty much NBA Jam style. DAMN, he should have just shot it. I have no idea why I’m so frustrated about this.
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:48 AM
It is shocking. I thought the ratings for First Take were tanking.
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:49 AM
You just described the double team. Meanwhile, Haslem was wide open at the top of the key.
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:52 AM
it would help if when lebron made a pass someone would make a fucking shot, sick of hearing this shit
March 3rd, 2012 at 12:55 AM
