New Orleans Saints’ Defense Had a Bounty Program Under Gregg Williams
Roger Goodell and the NFL have released a statement today regarding an investigation into the New Orleans Saints and allegations of operating a bounty program. Adam Schefter has details in his twitter timeline.
NFL investigation of Saints began in 2010 when allegations were made that Saints targeted QBs such as Brett Favre and Kurt Warner.
Among the highlights:
- Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams, now with the St. Louis Rams, administered the program and other coaches were aware of it;
- The league began the investigation after rumors emerged in 2010 regarding targeting quarterbacks;
- The league reviewed over 18,000 documents;
- Roger Goodell will determine discipline, which could include loss of draft picks, fines and suspensions.
This will be the largest institutional competitive issue since Spygate. Williams certainly had a reputation as a coordinator who liked to blitz and get after the quarterback, but these allegations take it much further. If players were participating in pools or bounties to injure or take out players, expect the league to respond forcefully. Williams may be facing a sizable suspension next year, and we could see players receive discipline in an environment where the league is trying to emphasize player safety.
[UPDATE: According to Bob Glauber, Saints GM Mickey Loomis was told by Owner Tom Benson to stop the Bounty System and failed to do so]

Awesome. Hopefully that sack of shit Gunther Cuntingham will do the same this year.
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:24 PM
If this is what it takes for analysts to stop praising Gregg Williams
as a defensive coordinator, so be it.
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:25 PM
Contract the Saints
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:25 PM
It’ll be like Spygate in that probably 25 other teams were doing it. Okay going in for Sporcle Movie Trivia 1
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:26 PM
A vacated Super Bowl win isn’t quite as nice as a real one, but I’m sure after a 2-14 season, the Colts will gladly accept it.
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:26 PM
I love this. Drop the mother fucking hammer, Goodell.
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:26 PM
I for one am anxiously, awaiting Jay’s rebuttal.

what the hell happened to the RGIII post?
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:28 PM
Why? The Saints defense fucking sucked.
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:28 PM
was the program giving up a bounty of points last year?
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:29 PM
And I say that meme is funny 0% of the time.

The biggest black eye in the NFL since Spygate, I suppose.
Agree with the sentiment above – anything to have analysts end their effusive praise of the “tastefully named” / gay Gregg “Dr. Heat” Williams is good by me.
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:30 PM
yeah, bout time NOLA was getting some media attention!

ESPN’s fault.
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:32 PM
I love this.
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:32 PM
In my opinion, this kind of crap is over-rated. Opposing QBs are always targeted, whether or not the word “bounty” is used, and players able to take out studs on the other side always get paid, regardless of what it’s called. His defense sucked anyway – total waste of $.
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:33 PM
what the hell happened to the RGIII post?
tried to get this one up when the news broke, that one posted, its been moved back 30 minutes and will be right back.

March 2nd, 2012 at 3:36 PM
They have some detailed info meaning they probably have been looking at this for a while I would think. Either way they’re going to hammer-fuck the douchey Saints, so everyone with a soul wins.
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:37 PM
This is disgusting. I hope we all realize that this wasnt invented by the Saints, but it is disgusting.
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:37 PM
How do you find 18,000 documents on this to review? Was the bounty program written up by The House of Representatives?
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:37 PM
I’m failing to see the connection, unless Ghadaffi was a Buddy Ryan disciple too. Which would explain a lot.
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:38 PM

What was the context of this?
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:44 PM
So they didnt do shit about Sean Payton stealing those painkillers but this is an issue? The league reviewed over 18,000 documents? Apparently the players hired some mortgage company to draft the paperwork that explained the bounty system to the players.
18000 documents = they hired school kids to translate all the Saints twitter accounts.
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:44 PM
Fuck the Saints, hope Brees leaves now.
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:44 PM
We’re supposed to get hit pretty hard. We were right in the center of the white “hardest hit area” this morning, but I don’t know if that’s been updated.
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:44 PM
What obviously is going to happen is Goodell will take away the Saints ’13 1st round pick. Which is owned by the Pats. Fucking Goodell.

50,000 pages on this shit is fucking mindboggling.
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:45 PM
It only took 2 years for them to realize this?
No, the league knew about it, told them to knock it off, and then found out they were still doing it. That’s why the Saints are gonna get /Herschel Walker’d without getting back an RB that they don’t give the ball to.
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:46 PM
Nothing wrong with this.
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:46 PM
Is this a joke? If it isn’t… How is this THAT disgusting? Every defense talks about hitting the QB. Adding a little incentive program to something everyone already plans to do anyway isn’t entirely disgusting. Sure its against league rules but not exactly murder in the first degree.
As for football itself … yup pretty disgusting.
/still getting NFL Sunday package next year though
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:46 PM
to be fair, belichick would’ve given it away for eight 6th rounders and a backup corner that showed him something in week 8 special teams all-22 tape, so it all evens out.
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:46 PM
Twitter fucking sucks for this shit. I click on a map on weather.com trying to find out where the touchdowns have been and I get a twitter feed of idiots complaining about weather.
I know a few, including a big one, hit N. Alabama pretty hard, and a few others in Monteagle/Chattanooga (all 1-2.5 hrs away), so it should get here eventually.
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:46 PM

March 2nd, 2012 at 3:47 PM
I could act like most NFL fans and state the defense of “This kind of stuff happens in every locker room with every team!”
But it doesn’t make it right. It’s dirty pool and should be penalized.
What’s worse is that there were bonuses to be had and the players couldn’t get to the QBs to collect! THAT is what pisses me off!!

Wouldn’t it have been more like Brudda?
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:47 PM
Oh, very well, it’s time for your bounty. Now, you can either have the washer and dryer where the lovely Sean Payton is standing, or you can trade it all in for what’s in this box.

A lot of them have been in New Orleans the last few years, bounty program or no
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:48 PM
different kind of bounty program…the bounty they use is to clean up stab wounds.
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:49 PM
If you cant see the difference between ‘hitting the QB’ and ‘here’s 50K, go break that guy’s leg’, I dont know what to tell you. That’s not football. I wouldnt want to watch an NFL where that’s ok.
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:49 PM

Fredo beat me to it. +1, good man. This is horseshit, even if it is my team doing it.
I was hoping that the Saints would be fortunate enough to make another Super Bowl before being branded “bad guys” but oh well.
And Jim Irsay can come pry the Lombardi Trophy out of my cold, dead hands.

Never used WiFi on a plane. I’m against unnecessary complexity. Their old map system was useful and easily interpretable. Just like I’m against mobile apps adding more and more features, making the programs more difficult and slower to use. Progress for the sake of change is idiotic.

HAHAHAHAHA…someone took jerry kelly in a golf pool. what, would you get bonus points for a t32 finish?
I think you mean T133. We have to pick all 35 tournaments prior to the year starting, can’t use a guy more than once. Based on this tourney’s history, the big guns usually sit out and Jerry has been decent in the past. Had no idea all these guys would show up.

March 2nd, 2012 at 3:57 PM
My first thought was ‘no’ on both. Maybe it’s just because it seemed obvious that everyone would do shit like this, so it’s not very shocking, but any idea of suspension of Williams or a 1st round pick penalty would seem excessive. I just assume everyone is like the Steelers and their fans and think concussion are no big deal. Looks like I may be wrong.

i laughed pretty hard at this.
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:59 PM
The most damning part of the NFL’s statement is Point #5: how the NFL told Tom Benson about it and he told Mickey Loomis to stop it and “There is no evidence that Mr. Loomis took any effective action to stop these practices.”
That kinda thing gets you fined if not suspended if not fired.
March 2nd, 2012 at 3:59 PM
I’m not that concerned about Spencer’s comment… more just bringing up a point, and maybe even reminding anyone who may be prone to that error in a more serious situation. If Spencer took it seriously, or that hurt his feelings that I used him as an example, I apologize to him, and will buy him a Shirley Temple.
March 2nd, 2012 at 4:00 PM
The largest payoff is actually $1500 for a cart-off… no one is paying anyone $50K to break legs. So sure this doesn’t sound great but I’m not sure it made that much of a difference in how the players played. There aren’t many ways to play defense effectively AND pay extra special attention to trying to injure your opponent without getting flagged.
$1500 is just as much motivation as the high five someone on say the Tampa Bucs would’ve gotten for a cart-off.
My point is that I don’t believe if you looked at the numbers you’d find a higher incidence of injuries for offenses playing against the Saints than you’d expect under less bountiful circumstances. If the numbers prove otherwise I stand corrected.

Adam Schefter: A safe prediction: Saints will be disciplined far worse than the Patriots were for Spygate.
this is worse than spygate though, we agree? this involves premeditated assault
Both the Patriots’ taping and these bounties go to a certain issue: regulation of fair competition. The NFL doesn’t care if players get hit hard (they sell DVDs of that shit) but they do care that it happens in an environment where it’s not premeditated/incentived. Likewise, the Pats’ taping was a problem because it made everyone question the competitive balance of their games — Biggest sin in sports.
And I guess the next MNF game the Saints have, we will not be media darlings and hear again how the Saints rebuilt the Lower Ninth Ward.
/glad we traded our first rounder for Mark Ingram last year
//HAHA SUCKAS!!

I don’t mean this personally at you… but I remember commenting about Harrison on some blog and getting torn up by people saying I want to watch flag football and I’m a pansy etc for worrying about concussions. I hate to see it happen to Crosby, but I do enjoy the irony of Pens’ fans misery a little bit.

isn’t there any part of this saints thing that is actually criminal, with police involvement? no diff from paying hit men off the field
No, this is more akin to you injuring yourself on a rollercoaster ride and then turning your ticket stub around to find that you agreed to not hold Six Flags responsible for anything that happened to you as a result of the ride.

I like the one about cell phones (which comes right before or after that one).

Can’t really compare stuff like Tabasco/El Yucateco to Sriracha, they are fundamentally different sauces. Vinegar-based pepper vs. that nice thick pimento.
But if you could, Sriracha wins.

Cleaning out the basement and came across all sorts of NFL Films VHS tapes. One was called “Mayhem and Destruction” or some such deal. Goddell would fine the cover of that…

parcells: if they don’t bite when they’re puppies they’re probably not gonna bite
deacon jones: i played XX years, and never missed a game, and walked away with no injuries except a bleeding heart (with a sweet smile)

My buddy and I used to get blazed and go to taco bell and he’d always say, “lemme get that fiyah” at the window when they asked if we wanted hot sauce. It’s really funny when you can’t feel your face.

Both Williams and Payton will have to be suspended. There’s no way around it, not in light of the recent litigation on behalf of players, not after all this publicity over head injuries, concussions, CTE. Not after what happened to Warner and Favre in those playoff games, and not after Colt McCoy. The NFL will have to act. Expect this to be a BFD.
March 2nd, 2012 at 4:22 PM
“lemme get that fiyah”Is your buddy Artie Lange? Cause that’d be fun, right up until he gets all stabby (on himself).

Not after what happened to Warner and Favre in those playoff games
They threw INTs?
March 2nd, 2012 at 4:36 PM
They were beaten into submission. Warner retired. Favre was never the same player again after that game.
