Ballin’: LeBron James Put on a Show in Portland
Miami 107, Portland 93: Without Chris Bosh, somebody had to step up, so LeBron did – 38 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, five steals, zero turnovers. The Heat have now won nine straight games by 12+ points. Not a bad stretch. D Wade added 33, including this perfect oop to LeBron.
Oklahoma City 105, Orlando 102: Kevin Durant scored 18 of his 38 points in the 4th quarter, and the Thunder rallied for their first win in Orlando since 2004 (when they were the Sonics). OKC made 14 consecutive free throws late, but of course missed two with less than five seconds left, but Jason Richardson bricked a long three-pointer (it wouldn’t have counted anyway, replays showed). The Magic were outscored by 14 in the final quarter. Dwight Howard scored 33 for the losers.
Phoenix 104, Minnesota 95: Steve Nash had 17 assists to Ricky Rubio’s two, and the Suns used a strong second half to send the Wolves a game under .500. Minnesota was 1-for-13 from deep; Kevin Love shot 8-for-25 from the field. If he’s off and Williams/Beasley are combining to shoot 3-for-15, they’ve got no shot. Hey, why won’t the Suns trade Nash? This was Rubio’s highlight:
LA Clippers 108, Sacramento 100: Six Paper Clips scored in double figures and LA assisted on 30 of 44 baskets to improve to 21-12. Jimmer went 3-for-4 from beyond the arc and scored 11 points in 12 minutes.

The Heat are on a warpath right now. It will take an injury to LBJ or D-Wade for them to fuck this up. If only LeBron was doing what he’s doing each night while playing in New York. He’d actually get the pub he deserves instead of Dim Sum (h/t Jersey) getting blown by the media. I think LBJ is a bit of a douche, but he’s on another level right now.

aside from him staying in the cleve, i wish he went to NY. him in dantonio’s offense would be fucking incredible.

The Magic are something else when they go into one of their inspiring implosions…no decent team feels like less of a lock up 10 in the 4th quarter than them
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:25 AM
Ron Rothstein pushing all the right buttons with the Heat.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:25 AM

agree… although Atlanta gives them a run for their money.

March 2nd, 2012 at 11:27 AM
Was Howard getting touches in the 4th? They usually forget about him in crunchtime.

That’s because you’re an idiot.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:31 AM
Obviously you didn’t catch the tongue in cheek tone in my comment. Thanks for the kind words though.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:32 AM
He got some, probably still too much Quentin Richardson shots though…that team is broken, there should be nothing to keep them from trading Howard now unless they think he’ll re-sign for the extra $30M
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:32 AM
I wouldn’t go that far, they are going to be challenged in the playoffs.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:33 AM
I wouldn’t go that far, they are going to be challenged in the playoffs.
By whom? Chicago? They handled them easily last year.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:34 AM
I don’t see how anyone could be rooting against the Heat to win it all.

March 2nd, 2012 at 11:34 AM

March 2nd, 2012 at 11:34 AM
Hey, why won’t the Suns trade Nash?
Because Steve may have said he doesn’t want to go…or maybe Sarver doesn’t want to lose his last draw…or maybe the Suns are just that dumb.
The Heat are on a warpath right now.
And that might be a slight concern if they burn themselves out right now. It’s tough to keep a run like this through June.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:35 AM
I have to interrupt with golf geekdom:
NBC and Golf Channel are simulcasting all weekend. NBC will do regular coverage and Golf Channel is doing Bear Trap only.
Back to roundball.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:35 AM
First off, no they didn’t and secondly it’s a new season with new teams so this is simplistic thinking
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:36 AM
The Heat definitely took advantage of the Blazers being on the wrong end of a back-to-back.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:36 AM
By whom? Chicago? They handled them easily last year.
That’s taking it a bit far.
Not really. Winning 4 straight games and finishing them off with a dominating 4th quarter performance in game 5… on the road.. shutting the MVP down… that’s handling them pretty easily.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:36 AM

Yes, and Miami’s better this year.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:36 AM
It will take an injury to LBJ or D-Wade for them to fuck this up
Completely agree. I think with Battier their defense is so good, they don’t even need Lebron to clutch up to win. Battier’s defense makes that team go IMO. They’ll get enough transition points to not require LBJ to do anything special. Now if DWade gets hurt, all bets are off.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:36 AM
Honestly I was rooting against them last year, but for some reason I just don’t care too much about it this year. Maybe it’s because it almost seems inevitable this year.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:36 AM

March 2nd, 2012 at 11:37 AM

DAMNIT.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:40 AM
Every game was a tough battle except for the Bulls’ game 1 blowout.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:40 AM
That’s one way to put it…the other way: Blown out in game 1, needed OT to win game 4 (@ home), needed a big 4th quarter to win games 3 & 5. That being said, the Heat have looked unreal this year.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:40 AM
The NBA is two seasons. Those transition baskets won’t come as easily in the postseason (thats you, OKC, and Miami)!!! Miami will need to show that they are better at playing offense in the halfcourt before they can be considered a lock.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:40 AM
Revisionist history is fun, every one of those games was a dogfight but to hear it talked about now you’d have thought it was a whitewash…if the Bulls can find a way to execute better at the end of games against them they can hang and make it a long series should they meet
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:41 AM
nice how much buzz there is around the NBA’s reach-around i mean reach-out to Hispanics.
El Magic? Los Suns? gtfo
They’ve done it the last few years. And yeah, it’s almost comical how awful it is.
Shouldn’t it be El Calor for the Heat or La Magia for the Magic?
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:41 AM
Yeah it’s NBC all the way until Augusta. Said it before, Bear Trap most lame closing sequence. When field of world’s elite plays 3 holes an avg of +1, then _maybe_ it’s a little tricked up. Long, boring par 3s with tucked pins? LAME. Nicklaus design at his worst. Sorry Jack, we already have the US Open if I want an war-of-attrition end to a tourney. Good tourney ruined by this nonsense.

March 2nd, 2012 at 11:42 AM
Russ Westbrook gets no mention for his impressive double-double. No wonder he feels slighted by Chuckasaurus Kevin Durant.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:42 AM
Every game was a tough battle except for the Bulls’ game 1 blowout.
The Heat won game 2 by 10 points, game 3 by 11 points, and game four by 8 points (admittedly, that was an OT game). Game 5 the roared back in the 4th quarter to finish them off. They were never in any danger of losing that series.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:42 AM
all of this. those kinds of forced carries are stupid enough on their own, but that course goes from boring to unplayable if there’s even a hint of wind.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:42 AM
Its a combination of those three. But its easy to say the “The Suns should trade Nash” but not suggest to where and for what. The Suns are not going to take back shitty contracts for an expiring contract. Plus Nash just said that he would be willing to sign an extension in Phoenix. Which for Phoenix is probably the best best.
Sign him to a decent contract and then use the cap money they have next year to go after a scoring SG like Eric Gordon. Trading Nash for nothing and a contract that hinders you in free agency for the sake of tanking is not a good option
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:45 AM
so the one i delete is either gonna have to be the final round of darren clarke’s open win or bill haas’ fedex win from last year. DAMNIT.
Those are both easily deleted. Clarke’s round was child’s play compared to Harrington closing at Birkdale. I mean it was more of a coronation that great golf theatre. DJ pissed himself and that was that. Fed Ex Cup w/ Haas, really? That cant be deleted? Woof.

I believe he shot less than 6% with lebron on him that series.

March 2nd, 2012 at 11:49 AM
So the Heat “handled them easily”?
All I’m saying is that it was clearly a hard fought series. There’s not really an argument for anything besides this. Spewing games results at me that I’m already aware of does nothing to prove otherwise.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:50 AM
Those transition baskets won’t come as easily in the postseason (thats you, OKC, and Miami)!!! Miami will need to show that they are better at playing offense in the halfcourt before they can be considered a lock.
Yeah but Miami’s defense is going to be even better too. I see them winning a shitload of playoff games and not even scoring 85-90 points. Nobody wants to see them lose more than I but I don’t see it if healthy. Chicago really going to have to win some 85-80 games. Miami can just wear down Rose with a rotation of fresh bodies. I think Miami will be more efficient. Yes we know Wade will get the ball at game’s end but at least Lebron wont kill them at the end with his schtick. It’ll free them up a bit.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:50 AM
Derrick Rose was 21 years old during last year’s playoffs…I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt that he can still improve as a player in those situations

But he’s not gotten any taller.

March 2nd, 2012 at 11:57 AM

We can’t have a civilized sports discussion SC? Is that not allowed around here? Your constant need to butt in is tiresome. I’ve been ignoring you for awhile for a reason. I suggest you return the favor. I know you don’t like. I’m over it. You’re obviously not.
I’ve got no hard feelings towards chicago. He questioned my stance that the heat handled the bulls easily, and I responded.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:57 AM
If the Bulls and Heat meet in the Eastern Conference Finals:
a.) The Heat will be the favorite.
b.) The Bulls will have a chance to win the series.
There. Everybody happy?
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:57 AM
wait. First you said you were keeping Clarke’s open but it’s really about Phil’s charge? And you already have his Pebble round? The one where he did a ton of damage on the front? I mean the back nine at August where like 6 guys were -10 at one point, that’s a pantheon Sunday at a major. Just delete and move on.
/regripped my driver & 4w (winn excel tan) and went to aldila 65 normal (from stiff) on my old 4w launcher yesterday. If that fails I might go RBZ this summer but wanted to give it one last chance.
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:58 AM
I don’t think they will either but would like to see them get another crack…the real problem in their games is always Bosh, Wade they can make go away for quarters at a time but Bosh and those 18-footers just kills them, perhaps they get lucky and he goes cold
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:58 AM
Like I said, Westbrook is Bobby Brown to Durant’s Whitney Houston. When America’s Sweetheart comes up short,it’ll always be Westbrook’s fault.
March 2nd, 2012 at 12:00 PM
b.) The Bulls will have a chance to win the series.
Provide me a non-injury scenario where they win 4 games vs the Heat. I am not trolling either. How does this play out?
March 2nd, 2012 at 12:00 PM
Absolutely. Chris Bosh was the biggest difference maker for the Heat last year against Chicago in the postseason. He played a fantastic series.
March 2nd, 2012 at 12:01 PM
i call it clarke’s open only because it’s easier for me to recall the tourney by winner. and the final fedex round with haas was WAY more than just the water shot…if anything, that undersells it.
RBZ is tits, but i wanna try out the new adams XTD fairways and hybrids before i marry the TM.

March 2nd, 2012 at 12:01 PM
Tiger birdie. We’ll see him this weekend.
March 2nd, 2012 at 12:02 PM
I dunno, scripty. But I know they’ll play the games and we can find out if they do. Not trolling either but that’s the great thing about sports. They play the games. Someone already said the Mavs were stone-cold locks to lose to Miami. They didn’t because Dirk was magnificent and the Dallas bench outplayed the Miami bench.
I guess that’d be one key for Chicago. Bench play. Bulls still have more depth and their second unit will need to consistently beat Miami’s.
March 2nd, 2012 at 12:03 PM
Sign him to a decent contract and then use the cap money they have next year to go after a scoring SG like Eric Gordon. Trading Nash for nothing and a contract that hinders you in free agency for the sake of tanking is not a good option
Teams that could use Nash: Lakers (nothing worth getting back), Mavs (expiring contract + Mahinmi?), Orlando (IF they keep Howard, but nothing in there Suns would want).

okay. MVP was also 9 for 30 in an elimination game.
March 2nd, 2012 at 12:08 PM
I’m thinking it would have to include the following, and I may be forgetting some things.
1)Rose improves his decision making from last year’s series (it was pretty bad). I’m not as concerned as others about Lebron’s defense on Rose. I’ve watched those games twice again, and it’s more so a combo of Lebron + the help than just Lebron. It’s a myth that Rose can’t get by Lebron; he did so plenty. It was the help that came when he did that really killed him. If Rose can be more prepared for it this year, I can only assume he’ll improve.
2)Boozer plays well. Doesn’t have to be great, but he has to do well and preferably not miss every defensive assignment imaginable. He’s gotten better at this already (plus he’s healthy and in shape).
3) Rip Hamilton is healthy enough so that the Heat at least have to pay attention to him when the Bulls are on offense.
4) Prevent the Heat from running.
It’s a lot to ask, but it’s possible.
March 2nd, 2012 at 12:08 PM
It’s more important to you to run around the barn to make that connection than it is for me to argue against it. So, play on playa!
March 2nd, 2012 at 12:09 PM
I see T38 in his future
March 2nd, 2012 at 12:09 PM
Has nothing to do with Durant’s play on his court. He’s been fantastic this year and is not by any means a chucker.
March 2nd, 2012 at 12:10 PM
I think the Bulls would need to add somebody. Give them some really aggressive 2/3 defensively that would cause problems for the Heat. I think Thibs could have some defensive ideas that for the Heat he could just sit on until they play in the ECF. But CHI would need a real ugly series, maybe bring the Lebron timidity into play…. I think MIA know their roles better and have a better D than last year. Im not happy about it.
Now I havent reviewed this as well as some Bulls fans, but wouldnt best case be sitting this trade deadline out and doing an amnesty on Boozer then making a run at somebody in free agency? Could they do this?
March 2nd, 2012 at 12:12 PM
Tiger birdied 2 in a row to end round. But he stuck those irons in close. Not the longest putts to make.

March 2nd, 2012 at 12:17 PM
chicago
1. Yes. Lebron cant cover a fast PG. He never has so this is possible. MIA best bet to just throw fresh people on rose but I dont by the Lebron can handle Rose bit. Unless they dont call anything.
2. Boozer cant play worse. So that could happen.
3. Ugh. Not sure how he isnt raped by Wade at other end. This is where Bulls could upgrade.
4. Kinda possible but with Battier back there to cover for Wade and LBJ this is much tougher than last year. Noah will need to really agitate down low. CHI cant afford any errors on the perimeter.
March 2nd, 2012 at 12:17 PM
Not that big of a barn.
March 2nd, 2012 at 12:18 PM
If the bulls are looking for lucky break here and there in a seven game series they are done
Hoping Boozer to step up is farce, the Boozer you have now is the Boozer you are going to get
This is why him and Noah are on bench at end of tight games no d and no o
It’s a failure on Bulls front office if Bulls don’t get Gasol or Howard
March 2nd, 2012 at 12:19 PM
Westbrook has been even better across the board. But you know as soon as something goes wrong, and Durant is hanging out around the 3 point line again, it’ll be Westbrook’s fault. The heat he caught last year was ridiculous when compared to what was actually happening.
March 2nd, 2012 at 12:19 PM
Isnt OKC paying Westbrook 15 mill a year to deal with the fact he’s going to get unfairly critiized when they lose? Or is he going to make a stink about this?
March 2nd, 2012 at 12:20 PM
Oh, so they pay players to get uncriticized now? Must have been included in the new CBA.
March 2nd, 2012 at 12:20 PM
too late…
March 2nd, 2012 at 12:22 PM
Boozer is on the bench at the end of games because Taj is a stud ond efense. Noah is never on the bench at the end of games. He has had a number of bigtime offensive rebounds/tip-outs at the end of games
March 2nd, 2012 at 12:27 PM
He can but not for an entire game, they usually slide him over with about 6-8 minutes left and has done a good job…I’m just thinking that being a year older the assumption that Rose won’t be able to perform better should they meet again is a little silly
March 2nd, 2012 at 12:30 PM
You would also hope that Thibs has come up with a gameplan to get him open looks when those situations occur. Pick and roll, pick and pop, 4 low, run him off screens, something.
March 2nd, 2012 at 12:33 PM
As has been said before, Rose got by LeBron. The problem was that most of the time, the threat of the help behind LeBron caused him to dribble around and jack jumpers, which against someone w/ LeBron’s length and reaction obviously didn’t work. Hopefully, he can just embrace the hlp defender and find the open guy (and trust he will make it). This is why Rip is so big…last year that guy was Bogans or Brewer (thye couldn’t play Korver much b/c they couldn’t hide him on D). If Rip can stay helathy and be able to amke the 18-24′ J’s, he can at least try to defend Wade a bit. Most of the time, the Heat just shaded Boozer and Bogans/Brewer’s defneder towards Rose behind LeBron.

If only LeBron was doing what he’s doing each night while playing in New York. He’d actually get the pub he deserves
Yup, he’s really flying under the radar in Miami.
