UCLA Reaction to the Sports Illustrated Story: Ben Howland is Our Guy (Today, That is)
The majority of folks didn’t think George Dohrmann’s in-depth story on UCLA’s recent demise was that damaging to the program.
That being said … UCLA gathered reporters for a conference call Thursday night to discuss matters, and while Howland is confident he’ll return to Westwood, AD Dan Guerrero stopped short of saying it was a lock.
Reeves Nelson, who comes across looking worse than Howland, and who pissed (ha!) away any shot of getting drafted by an NBA team, has lawyered up and is demanding a retraction. Good luck with that.
Blowhard Bill Plaschke: “This isn’t news.” News the NCAA would be interested in? No. But ultimately, fickle teenagers like Kyle Anderson will make that determination. If the recruiting class sticks around, then Howland will obviously be retained. If the recruiting class evaporates? Well …
Speaking of that recruiting class, UCLA might want to throw in the towel on the best player in the Class of 2012, Shabazz Muhammad. As Parrish and Goodman detail, the NCAA is telling schools that he might be suspended for the first 20 games of next season.
Gulp.

George Dohrmann’s a menace to society.

I looked this up yesterday, and under Howland they’ve had 7 transfers (some of whom are now All Conference type players), 2 dismissals (Nelson, another All Conference player), and 8 early entrants (many were nowhere near ready) under Howland that I could find.
It’s painfully obvious that players are desperate to get away from the program. That falls on Howland, and it’s not going to get any better, especially when recruits are going to see this article and hear former Howland guys talking about how they were lied to in recruiting.

Honestly did you actually read the article beyond the headline? I don’t think you did.

Do those games really matter, though?

I don’t know what’s more embarrassing, TBL linking to an article that he’s never read or you all but admitting that you read a Bill Plaschke article.

the dohrmann piece wasn’t that explosive. lotta hype for not a lot of juicy shit.

In that amount of time he could have done an extra set of curls. So, probably not.

You mean you weren’t shocked that kids in Beverly Hills smoke weed?
March 1st, 2012 at 3:47 PM
Wash.
Blaschke says that the lack of control isn’t shocking. He meant that it isn’t surprising, not that it isn’t relevant or indicative of problems with Howland.

if anything, i was shocked russell westbrook wasn’t a big time recruit.

I learned that elite college athletes do drugs and sometimes get mad when they don’t get the playing time they thought they deserved. Line up a Pullitzer for Dorhmmann

UCLA said themselves they knew about most of the things in it already.

Damn. Tennessee is losing ANOTHER football coach. That makes 6 (or is it 7?) since their season ended.

You can still read and mock, just come back here to do so.

And yeah, that’s really not that true. Scout.com had him as a 4* guy. He wasn’t a national type guy, but it wasn’t like he came out of nowhere either.

It’s not the shower discipline guy, is it? If Dooley loses his assistant shower discipline guy his seat is gonna be Richt-level hot

This and the Ohio State expose have worn off a lot of luster for Dorhmann, which is a shame because I loved “Play Their Hearts Out.”

Ill: Here’s an actual link to an article. He has an offer. No word on whether or not he’s accepted it, though.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:11 PM
gotcha, thx
March 1st, 2012 at 4:24 PM
Despite that, he didn’t get any major offers. I remember reading that his best offer was to some mid-major (Ball State sticks out in my mind, but don’t quote me on that), but Howland said he would offer him a scholarship if Afflalo left for the NBA as he expected. Afflalo ended up staying, but Farmar blew up that year, clearing a scholarship for Westbrook. I wonder what would have happened to Russell if Farmar didn’t enter the draft

When does Guerrero start feeling some heat? It seems like he’s kind of run that athletic department into a ditch with Howland and Neuweasel.

how danny g still has a job, ill never know.

Wasn’t sure when he started – I’ve heard that Westwood is expensive, facilities aren’t great, etc., but it’s still UCLA – they should be highly competitive across the board every year.
