any Jonathan Franzen fans in the house?
He is a great writer, but his last book IMO wasn’t very good. None of the characters were very likeable and the ending kinda pissed me off.

Now this one really surprised me. I thought that he came from a really solid family and am sure that this incident has really shattered the family image.

Grantland was rebuffed in an attempt to get credentials to Duke-UNC Saturday
The Poynter review was pretty clear. The media room is maxed out on media creds and “ESPN already has 10 seats for the game… plus space for a photographer and multiple camera spots required to air the game”
so your Grantland staff couldnt even break the top 10 for creds. Simmons apparently you have ZERO juice for your site. They could always buy a ticket and then report it. Only thing the article doesnt clearly state is if the clear reason for the credential decline was told to the writer upfront. If not, that’s very douchey by the Duke SID.

I like how a pop culture site deserves a reason why it was turned down for media credentials, or any site needs an explanation for that matter. It’s not douchy to not give a reason.
Having worked in a SID office, NCAA tournament events as a host site, conference tournaments, and in two pro teams communications department specifically doing this, yes it is douche. Media creds given in advance rarely get declined. As a PR arm of a team/university’s sports dept, it helps not do play god and just decline without reason. All it does is get a call from an editor, etc. In this case the SID should have just called the Grantland editor and told them about the decline upfront.
Not all SID departments are professional. There are some bush league ones and and some clueless ones.

In the mid 80′s I used to catch the Monkees on syndicate TV out of WPIX in NY. I watched them religiously, thought they were funny as hell and liked the music as well. Finally saw them in concert when they toured in ’86 I believe with Gary Puckett and the Union Gap & Grass Roots.

Fuck Franzen, article on Edith Wharton belied any self awareness and was on a whole ridiculous.
What the fuck does that have to with anything? Essentially he criticized Wharton’s money and privilege writing as a woman 150 years ago as a man of wealth and privilege today. He added the caveats that at least she was ugly and tried to act like a man. What a fucking douchebag. I suspect he’s acting like such an asshole because his books resonate with the Oprah cult crowd and that doesn’t gel with his shallow conception of himself as a man’s man. I’ll kick your fucking head in Franzen you yuppie misogynistic cunt.

March 1st, 2012 at 8:45 AM
That may be true for larger venues but Cameron is notoriously small so going in looking for first time credentials one must expect there is a good chance of being declined. Also if an Editor in Chief responds by saying the declining school sucks on twitter I believe Duke should have been even more douchy in the way they declined it. Since you have worked in these situations do the media applying for these credentials need to present reasons to why they should be credentialed?
March 1st, 2012 at 8:45 AM

Specs? I have decided to re-shaft my 4W today (I carry driver, 4w). If that doesnt help, in midsummer I am going to mid-summer get a RBZ. But since I like to get a weak 3 or normal 4w, I’ll just wait and try this out. I’m a bit stingy on my clubs and hate to pay so much for them and like to get non-traditional specs so it’ll be a waiting game. I like to have a 4w and driver that are similar in feel though so it’ll be tough for me to get just a driver or wood though. So I am going to try this last-ditch.

Also if an Editor in Chief responds by saying the declining school sucks on twitter I believe Duke should have been even more douchy in the way they declined it. Since you have worked in these situations do the media applying for these credentials need to present reasons to why they should be credentialed?
Simmons whining on twitter is ultra-lame no doubt. I think in Simmons case, we know well there won’t be 10 bylines from ESPN tomorrow so some people are just squatting on their creds. A lot of this is really internal ESPN drama as they should have a cross-platform discussion on their coverage. They should know they get X number of creds for a Duke game so this shouldnt be news. But as a PR person you are paid to put things best, so you suffer lots of real world injustices to get more media in there. So I don’t think just a dry decline to the largest sports media group in the nation is doing yourself any favors.
To summarize, ESPN (shocker) has some serious editorial issues where they should have known their credential amount long ago and had a discussion how they’d be used. Duke SID office should know their role and offer some better professionalism. I’ve been on both sides of the process and have been turned down before, it happens. But look at what this turned into… Completely unneccessary. Plenty of blame to go around.

Just imagine how nice it is to live in a year-round golf climate.
We’re thawing out here. This year I am really committed to dialing in the game on the range before I go to the course. B/C once I start golfing my practice time evaporates. But playing on a soupy course doesnt help you get into form either. So I really have to fight the pull to just play and skip practice.

I got the TM Superfast2.0 Driver/3-wood. Standard specs for now, but I’m due to regrip my irons after this year and I’ll get thicker grips, etc. put on them then. I couldn’t pass up Carl’s prices (driver was only $169). I’ve been swinging a Ping G-2 that I bought used for about 4 years now, and my 3-wood was this POS King Cobra that I couldn’t hit for shit.
As for the wedges, I got a 50 and 56 degree CG-14 Black Pearl. I didn’t get the Lob because I love my existing lob wedge, though it’s pushing 15 years old now.
Total price for all 4 clubs – $460.

he was probably about as amused as my dad was when he flipped on my stereo in my room and NWA was on. that was a fun conversation. Ark
Yeah, Dad also found an Eazy-E tape in my truck at the same time. He made me explain to him what E meant when he the chick asked him, “Why you wear your pants that way?”

Youngstown unfortunately. I belong to Tippecanoe CC and my brother belongs to The Lake Club, so that covers most of my rounds. Mill Creek, Kensington, Reverve Run are decent public courses.

Kevin Duckworth is DEAD? How did I not know that?

Ok thanks for the insight! Also you answered another question for me because I was thinking shouldn’t have Grantland checked in with ESPN and tried to determine if it could apply under one of ESPN’s 10 spots or had ESPN request another instead of just applying for their own since they fall under that umbrella. It has been handled poorly all around but Simmons complaining about it on twitter made me side with Duke because if he expects for Grantland to be taken seriously he has to act a bit more professional in this instance. I imagine the scenario where it came up in Grantland emails was along the lines of “wouldn’t it be cool to go to Duke UNC game on Saturday and then write about it” instead of actually having anything of substance to write about

Man. I had these for the first time last summer and fucking loved them. I used raspberry lemonade in place of regular, though.

I was watching Die Hard the other nite and the part where the cop, Sgt. Al Powell, steps out into the street to look at where the Nagatachi Tower is located down the street, and the gas sign on his right said $0.87. That was 1988. Could fill up for $10 back then and drive around for 3 weeks.

Andrew Breitbart, a well-known conservative blogger, has died, his attorney confirmed today. He was 43.
There is absolutely, no possible way he was only 43. he must have lied about his age. he looks (looked?) 63
March 1st, 2012 at 9:38 AM
i see.
read the haney excerpt yesterday at the airport…seemed like tiger was chasing the childhood he never had with the whole SEAL thing. and haney’s comment about the start of that infatuation being where he seemed less interested in golf kinda jives. im sure tiger was burnt the fuck out of golf from 07-11.

I guess he had a heart attack as they’re saying it was natural causes. It sucks that he left 4 kids, though. As much a of pure prick that he was, that’s some tragic shit for sure.

Havent seen or read all that much of him but from what I have seen he was a pretty angry dude. Not surprised about the heart attack if this was the case all the time
March 1st, 2012 at 9:43 AM
Oh, he’s a class-A asshole, but damn…dead at 43 of natural causes is pretty freaking crazy.

Adidas this is an example of where journalism at ESPN is in decline. In a real newsroom there’d be a meeting (a conf call today) where people lay out what they have this week, next week, next month, etc. How long each piece, where they at, etc. So you would have all your credentials in place with tons of advance, especially for a Duke-UNC game at a small gym with limited access. But I bet this didn’t happen, the guy tried to freelance and now he’s shit out of luck. It’d be like a rock journalist calling U2′s people two days before a show wanting 20 minutes with Bono. Not gonna happen.
This shows one of the inherent failures of Grantland. Everybody’s an editor? How the fuck can that be? You can tell nobody has the balls to tell the writers their shit is lame and to re-do the article, etc. Writers, even the best ones, need editors. This is not the case at Grantland. Who is the managing editor? It better be somebody with some serious newsroom cred to tell these egomaniacs to step up their games. But I don’t think that happens and you get the ADHD slop they serve so well.
March 1st, 2012 at 9:50 AM
you got off easy. my dad asked me to explain to him why I was listening to songs that said “F’n N*****s” in it every other word. then he broke my tape in half.
March 1st, 2012 at 9:55 AM
which video is fake?
I’m assuming the birthday cake one. The paper airplane one is legit. That dude was a former Cal quarterback.
then he broke my tape in half. Ark
Dad brought the tapes inside and listened to them on his home stereo. I got home from practice and he asked me about Eazy-E and then pulled it out and wrapped the tape around his hand several times and threw it across the room.

I should note that since Simmons started writing at ESPN I have been a huge fan of his but since the idea then the launch of Grantland happened I find him insufferable. (Realizing that makes me sound like a hipster) My view of Grantland is that it is a glorified Bleacher Report set in a stoners basement. You are right there is a complete lack of editorial control. You’d think someone like Simmons who was heavily edited would realize this but from what I can tell this is like a teenager being away at college for the first time and rebelling against his parents. It is really sad the state of sports “journalism” at this day in age. Everyone seems to want to be the story instead of letting the story stand on its own merits. It is ego run wild for sure
