Here’s Video of AJ Burnett Fracturing His Orbital Bone While Attempting a Bunt
All, Baseball, Batting Cage, Video March 1st. 2012, 1:23pm
AJ Burnett, who hasn’t even been with the Pirates a month, will be getting surgery, according to the team. That crack in the video sounds awful. It’s unclear how long he’ll be out, but early speculation is 6-8 weeks. [video via]

Clint Hurdle being retained by the Pirates is the worst personnel decision they have made in years and that is quite the threshold to meet.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:26 PM
Ooooooooooh.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:26 PM
It’s Sid Bream’s fault. Somehow.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:27 PM
You know, if they had just been contracted, none of this would have happened.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:27 PM
Clint hurdle loves the bunt a little too much. Bunts are evil.

I wonder if Vegas now has the Pirates winning more games this year
March 1st, 2012 at 1:30 PM
This is it, this is the year they win 73 games. Expect the unexpected.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:30 PM
I enjoy watching the rest of the team curiously and almost disapprovingly looking on as he bunts, then not even flinching as he leans over in pain.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:31 PM
typical pirates.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:31 PM
In related news, TBL now knows the name of a Pirates player.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:31 PM
Damn, AJ was going to wipe the floor in the NL too!
March 1st, 2012 at 1:32 PM
It’s his wife’s fault, from I learned before.
If she wasn’t afraid of flying, he could be playing in the AL with the Angels and not have to worry about having to stand in the batter’s box.

Damn, AJ was going to wipe the floor in the NL too!
They were going to make him a clubhouse attendant?
March 1st, 2012 at 1:32 PM
I’d appreciate it if everyone would keep this opinion to themselves before we find him back on our TVs every night again.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:32 PM
If the NL had the DH, this wouldn’t have happened.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:33 PM
Management is probably telling the team blogger not to report it, and is banning the TV and radio stations with the briadcast rights not to talk about it.

This happened to a kid on my team during 7th grade. He was barely 5 foot and nobody liked him so we all laughed at his broken nose. Teenagers are evil.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:33 PM
*from talking about it.
Becasue that’s what they do.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:34 PM
If the NL had the DH, this wouldn’t have happened.
Alternately, if the AL didn’t have the DH we would have been laughing about this awhile ago.

DH in both leagues. Enough with pitchers trying to hit.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:37 PM
They’ll be better than the Mets. Book it.

you know that the team had nothing to do with the lack of reporting on the Connelly thing. It was the station that chose to not mention it. The Pirates wanted it reported, to avoid the very speculation that you’re making.
But fucks sake why does nothing ever go right for the Buccos.

Carlos Zambrano and his 23 career home runs laugh at this.

Riveting shit right there. I love the collecting, “ooooohhhhhhhh” from the crowd. I bet AJ appreciated that.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:40 PM
DH in both leagues. Enough with pitchers trying to hit.
Probably the only big AL fan to say this, but I think the DH is terrible and needs to go away.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:40 PM
pretty good field at the Honda Classic this week.

93.7 The Fan. Woof. Baseball and Pitt Football is the dominate force during the middle of the NFL season. What an awful radio station.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:41 PM
I understand both sides of the DH argument, so it doesnt matter to me one way or the other, but what does matter to me is having the same rule in both leagues. One way or the other. DH in one and not the other is so stupid.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:43 PM
Honestly, I like the split. It’s funny watching pitchers trying to hit and run the bases like sissies. But it’s equally as fun watching the NL try to fill the DH spot with a utility OF with a career avg of .260.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:45 PM
You’re not the only one.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:46 PM
What do you like about pitchers hitting, or rather dislike about DHs hitting?
March 1st, 2012 at 1:47 PM
This is my take. I just don’t get why it’s different between the leagues. Pick one and go with it.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:48 PM
What do you like about pitchers hitting, or rather dislike about DHs hitting?
I like the strategy involved later on in the innings. Like if you SP is due up and he has allowed a few runs. Do you bench him and get the BP going or do you let him hit? Things like that are what I like about the pitcher hitting.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:48 PM
Mets have the worst odds of any team to win their division. But they Orioles and Astros have a lower O/U number for win totals if it makes you feel better.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:49 PM
I would take the side of having pitchers hit, though. I think each field player should have to hit, but I get why the league would probably prefer the DH as it would provide more offense and make games more exciting in that regard. Either way having two sets of rules is fucking stupid.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:49 PM
I agree with the Red Sox fan.

What do you like about pitchers hitting, or rather dislike about DHs hitting?
i like seeing what pitchers are actual athletes and which ones are just talented nerds with a blessed arm.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:52 PM
Hernia touches himself as he watched this video.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:53 PM
I think they should keep leagues different, but they should definitely have the pitchers hit in the minors in the NL.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:54 PM
I would like to see the high school athletes develop both pitching and hitting skills.
Some draft boards vary on whether a guy will be a pitcher or a hitter…one they become a pitcher, they stop developing their hitting skills. Just put in the work and become a greater asset.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:54 PM
The strategy in the later innings and the fact that it holds pitchers accountable for their pitches. If you want to make a statement about something the other pitcher did, you plunk him. Pitchers can’t hide in the dugout and have another player get hit on their behalf.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:57 PM
I think they usually do. At least at my AA park, if the away team is an AL affiliate, they get to choose whether or not they want to use the DH. 2 NL teams there is no DH.
March 1st, 2012 at 1:59 PM
Hmm, ok then. I was under the impression that no pitchers hit in the minors.
Looks like I have nothing more to add. I’m going back to work.
March 1st, 2012 at 2:01 PM
Didn’t stop Chien Ming Wang’s foot from exploding when he tried to run the bases.
March 1st, 2012 at 2:01 PM
I keep hearing this… somebody find out if HBP in AL > NL please?
March 1st, 2012 at 2:02 PM
Wow. ESPN’s front page has 4, count ‘em 4, Pittsburgh sports links on the right-hand side.
Unfortunately, the Pirates had to have someone crack a bone to get a shout out.
March 1st, 2012 at 2:02 PM
758 in AL for 2011
811 in NL for 2011
/busted
March 1st, 2012 at 2:07 PM
Interesting, I wouldn’t have guessed that at all.

@WWoS: where did you find that? Just looked for 15 mins and got nothin.

Baseball reference league stats for 2011.

Poor guy’s career has never been the same. He was on a roll at that point too.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/AL/2010.shtml
Just change the year league… it’s actually was very consistent for 2009-2011
AL is 720-760
NL is 810-860
surprising, since I figured just Beckett and Jeter would have skewed those numbers to the AL
March 1st, 2012 at 2:12 PM
Ah-ha. Thanks.
