2012 NBA Mock Draft: A Pre-NCAA Tournament Version
What better time to look at the loaded 2012 NBA Draft than right after the NBA All-Star break and right before the NCAA tournament? This was written under the assumption that Michael Kidd-Gilchrist will not enter the NBA draft, like he said over the weekend. NBA order based on records at the All-Star break.
1. Charlotte – Anthony Davis, F/C, Kentucky. Stone cold lock. Can’t imagine anything that could change this in the next four months.
2. Washington – Austin Rivers, G, Duke. Nobody has him this high, but I love his game. You let Nick Young walk, right? Enter Rivers, a talented kid with good pedigree and a nice jumper. Plus, if Wall never improves, build around Rivers, who I see as the next Russell Westbrook.
3. New Orleans – Thomas Robinson, F, Kansas. Total package. Carlos Boozer with more athleticism and toughness. Someone will inevitably say, “the Hornets already took a bum from Kansas – Julian Wright!”
4. New Jersey – Harrison Barnes, F, UNC. Difficult to peg the Nets, who could either lose Deron Williams or add Dwight Howard. I’ll operate under the assumption that D-Will goes to Dallas, and D12 doesn’t arrive in the Swamp.
5. Toronto – Andre Drummond, C, UConn. I’ve seen comparisons of Drummond to a more raw Dwight Howard. This is totally based on upside, because Drummond often looks clueless for the embattled Huskies.
6. Detroit – Cody Zeller, F, Indiana. Probably too high, but like Rivers, I’m enamored with Zeller’s game. But is he coming out? If not, Indiana is a serious Final 4 contender in 2013. Love his skill set, and paired with Greg Monroe, Detroit would have two very complete bigs.
7. Sacramento – Jared Sullinger, PF, Ohio State. The power forward the Kings haven’t had since C-Webb left the franchise. Also, a quality individual that you need to help straighten out Cousins.
8. Milwaukee – Brad Beal, G, Florida. Seems unlikely the freshman will fall this far, but if he does, Brandon Jennings may want to stick around Milwaukee. They’d make a fun backcourt.
9. Phoenix – Damian Lillard, Weber St. You say “Reach,” I say the “heir apparent to Steve Nash.” If you haven’t heard of Lillard, you will in the NCAA tourney when Weber St. upsets a higher ranked seed.
10. Cleveland – Jeremy Lamb, G, UConn. Best shooting guard the Cavs have had since … Ron Harper? Kyrie Irving and Lamb would make a dynamic backcourt.
11. Utah (via Golden State) Kendall Marshall, PG, UNC. Could take over for Devin Harris by midseason. (This pick is top 7 protected this year.)
12. Utah – Perry Jones, F, Baylor. You get two lottery picks, you can take a chance on one. Jones will probably go higher because of his “upside,” but this season, I’ve see very little of that upside.
13. Boston – Tyler Zeller, C, UNC. I’m a fan. Runs the floor well for a 7-footer, has nice offensive skills and if he gains 15 pounds, could be an 18-10 guy.
14. Houston (via New York) – John Henson, PF, UNC. Swung and missed with Gasol and (probably will with Dwight Howard), but they’ll finally get a capable (albeit offensively-challenged) big man.
15. New Orleans (via Minnesota) – Marquis Teague, PG, Kentucky. Turnover-prone earlier this season and still just scratching the surface, but ultimately, he’ll be better than his brother Jeff (PG of the Hawks).
16. Denver – Terrence Jones, F, Kentucky. Skill set is there to go in the Top 10, but he’s been overshadowed by MKG and Davis. Seems to take a lot of plays off on both ends.
17. Portland – Tony Wroten, G, Washington. Athletic combo guard who may be their answer to Brandon Roy (without the jumper). Reminds me of DeMar DeRozan athletically.
18. Memphis – Terrence Ross, SF, Washington. With the Grizzlies paying Gay, Gasol & Randolph, they can’t afford to pay Allen and Mayo, so Ross is insurance for those guys. He might be better. In 2013.
19. NJ Nets (via Houston) – Dee Bost, PG, Mississippi St. They’ll need a PG when Deron Williams leaves, but the crop is weak this year. Bost could push Farmar for the starting job.
20. Atlanta – Arnett Moultrie, F, Mississippi St. Long, athletic and his lithe frame might remind you of Kevin Garnett. Offensive game needs major work, though.
21. Philadelphia – Draymond Green, F, Michigan St. He’s a Doug Collins kind of player.
22. LA Lakers – Doron Lamb, SG, Kentucky. The Lakers need a 3-point threat. Lamb shot 48 percent from three last year. He’s shooting 48 percent from three again this year.
23. Boston (via LA Clippers) – Jeff Taylor, SF, Vanderbilt. The next Paul Pierce? Ok, he’s obviously not, but he’s a damn good shooter who should be a solid pro.
24. Orlando – Patric Young, F, Florida. Less than zero offensive game. If Dwight Howard does stick around, Young would be a nice power forward who inhales rebounds. The next Brandon Bass?
25. Indiana – Scott Machado, PG, Iona. Absurd, right? Except that Collison is the weakest link on the Pacers.
26. LA Lakers (via Dallas) – Tyshawn Taylor, PG, Kansas. The most important player on the Jayhawks has had an up-and-down career, but seems to be finishing strong.
27. San Antonio – Jeff Withey, C, Kansas. Last year at this time, had anyone even heard of Jeff Withey? Before Maui, did anyone even think he’d have NBA potential? I can see him flaming out very early or having a quiet 10-year career.
28. Chicago – William Buford, SG, Ohio State. How many shooting guards have the Bulls had in the last few years? Buford’s long, shoots the three well, and might finally be the answer.
29. Oklahoma City – Doug McDermott, F, Creighton. Midwestern game stays in the Midwest. Why couldn’t he have a Wally Szczerbiak-type 10-year NBA career?
30. Miami Heat – CJ Leslie, PF, NC State. Adds some offense to the second unit.

NO. And Sullinger doesn’t belong in the top 10 either.
March 1st, 2012 at 3:55 PM
Why is Machado absurd? I suspect he winds up being a lottery pick when all is said and done. I also highly, highly doubt that McDermott is entering the draft.
March 1st, 2012 at 3:55 PM
Is this true? Wasn’t he the #1 prep player last year?
He was a top-3 lock last year… yet somehow people always tell these kids to stay in school. Some team can buy low and maybe get a steal if he pans out.
March 1st, 2012 at 3:56 PM
I’m honestly curious if Anthony Davis will keep his unibrow upon his arrival in the NBA.
March 1st, 2012 at 3:57 PM
Riiiiiiight. Cousins seems to be doing better since the Kings got rid of Westphal and he’s tied for 4th in the league in double double’s. As far as straightening Cousins out, I think that’s is a head coach’s job or a veterans job, not a rookie’s job who I think will have a hard time producing at the next level.
March 1st, 2012 at 3:58 PM
Or a 15 year career or never getting out the D-League. The possibilities are endless.
March 1st, 2012 at 3:59 PM
I’ll throw a sawbuck down on 7.3 years.
March 1st, 2012 at 3:59 PM
Cody Zeller should stay in school, especially with this draft. And MKG should and will, I predict, enter the draft.
I’m not sold on Austin Rivers yet. And I think Thomas Robinson might measure a little short for most scouts/execs. I have no idea how Sullinger is going to do at the next level.
Better draft this year and he didn’t really didn’t make a leap like scouts were hoping, though he did develop a bit of perimeter game.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:02 PM
Do rookies come into the league and “straighten out” third year guys?
March 1st, 2012 at 4:03 PM
Just another indictment of Stansbury here. Two arguable first-round picks in the starting five, as well as an All-SEC freshman (Hood), and he might miss the tournament. A half-competent coach would have that team competing for a 3-5 seed.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:03 PM
I’d say Weber State better worry about Montana before they start worrying about upsetting anybody in the NCAA tourney, because the Grizzlies are the team to beat, especially at home.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:05 PM
This. Especially if Kentucky wins it all.
I think that was his decision. Nobody in their right mind would have said you need to come back and work on some things because a) the draft last year was weak compared to the talent this year and b) the knock on him was he doesn’t have that ‘high ceiling’ and you’re not going to get that much better playing against the same competition as opposed to going against pros.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:05 PM
You can’t tell me that the point of this post isn’t to get clicks.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:05 PM
the Wizards go with Robinson or Barnes if they’re still available. No chance they go with another guard.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:06 PM
Take out Stansbury. Put in Calhoun. Take out first round picks and put in lottery picks. Take out 3-5 seed and put in 1-2 seed.
/Fix’d
//Although I agree with everything you said about Stansbury.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:07 PM
I do agree that Houston will have a lottery pick though.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:07 PM
Didn’t he and Barnes (and a few others) go back to school because of the threat of lockout?
March 1st, 2012 at 4:08 PM
You can’t tell me that the point of this post isn’t to get clicks.
Don;t know if you saw, but the point of this site is not to generate page views
March 1st, 2012 at 4:08 PM
Austin Rivers does not have Westbrook’s elite athleticism or length.
Sullinger is still 6-8, over weight and plays below the rim. I think most teams would rather take a chance on perry jones.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:08 PM
The point is to piss off foreigners since this according to this we’re having the first draft in what, over a decade without an international player
March 1st, 2012 at 4:08 PM
No.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:08 PM
So Charlotte drafted Jeremy Lintebowplayoff?
March 1st, 2012 at 4:08 PM
Oh, I saw.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:09 PM
I think that was a lot of it. That lockout screwed Sully out of a lot of money.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:10 PM
I noticed that, but didn’t want to shake that beehive…they’ll be at minimum 5 foreigners taken in the 1st rd.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:10 PM
I really hope the Warriors end up with a top 7 pick, they need to be in this draft.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:10 PM
effing perry jones. could be so much better if his vaheen wasnt slowing him down.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:10 PM
Letang is concussed. Penguins season is over.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:11 PM
What?
March 1st, 2012 at 4:11 PM
Where’s the Knicks pick?
/guffaws
March 1st, 2012 at 4:12 PM
What?
March 1st, 2012 at 4:12 PM
I hate this because we say this about every skinny college player even though we can’t name a single player who got better because they gained 15 pounds. The same thing was said about Durant and he seems to be doing well which has nothing to do with the fact that he’s skinny or not.
Another one of this cliches is the one about centers developing a 15 foot jumper. We know most centers in the NBA don’t have a 15ft jumper and they still manage to be effective but for some reason we have this requirement for college centers entering the NBA. Here’s a tip… no one learns to shoot in the NBA.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:12 PM
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
March 1st, 2012 at 4:12 PM
Eh … Dee I can see. But I don’t think Moultrie has enough offensive talent to be a lottery pick, no matter the coach. He’s developed significantly just to get where he is now.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:13 PM
That sucks. They’ll be fine. Byslma gets the most out of his players.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:14 PM
Is TBL the only one who thinks this highly of Austin Rivers? Seth Curry is just as good right?
March 1st, 2012 at 4:14 PM
What?
Yes
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Yes again.
Picking Rivers would do nothign to help the development of Wall, they need everything except the exact same position John Wall plays. Also, comparing Sullinger to Webber is ridiculous. Webber was a bad, bad dude. Sullinger will be in the league a long time, but it would be shocking if he had a carrer like CWebb.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:14 PM
Damn. Sullinger at No. 7? Dude seems like he’s a 6th or 7th man to me. Do you take that guy No. 7?
/honestly asking
March 1st, 2012 at 4:15 PM
I offer Roy Hibbert as a counter. He’s packed on 15+ in Indy, and is the better for it.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:15 PM
I do. Could be an elite 2 guard for years to come. Reminds me of how Ray Allen played when in college.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:16 PM
Also, wouldnt Cousins be a better “replacement for Cwebb” — I’m so confused.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:17 PM
Wonderful
March 1st, 2012 at 4:17 PM
Rivers has improved a lot the second half of the season.
Still think his dad tells him he isn’t ready though.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:17 PM
I think Sullinger is a guarantee to be a moderately effective NBA player for a while, with very little chance to be a superstar. I would take Zeller before him.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:17 PM
Needs to get fat again. To thin now and would get pushed around in the pros. He’s also playing out of position at center. As a 4, he’ll be better off, with a Charles Barley-like upside. I doubt he’d score like a Malone, but if he develops a 12-15 foot shot, he’ll be a 16-8 guy.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:18 PM
Meant to say I would take either Zeller before him.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:18 PM
Jeff OsterPollardCollison
March 1st, 2012 at 4:19 PM
That’ll be good for his already shattered back.
Oden 2.0
March 1st, 2012 at 4:19 PM
I hate this because we say this about every skinny college player even though we can’t name a single player who got better because they gained 15 pounds.
Durant does bang around in the paint all game dude, hes running around screens and hitting jumpers. Not posting up and fighting off C’s and PFs
March 1st, 2012 at 4:19 PM
Sullinger reminds me of a lighter Big Baby Davis. Dude just can’t get above the rim, but he wants to be a banger. That’s a tall order in the NBA.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:19 PM
It would be hard for Jordan to fuck this up, right? If he had the #1 he doesn’t pick anybody else but Davis, right? Besides, he doesn’t like Harrison Barnes because he wears Kobe’s instead of Jordan’s, right?
March 1st, 2012 at 4:21 PM
That unibrow has to be the same hair that the wolf people have where he shaves it an it grows back 3 hours later. There is no other excuse for why that thing is still on his face.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:21 PM
Kwame Bron agrees.

First of most young adult humans get bigger as they get older. Also most young basketball players get bigger as they get older. So correlation and causation not the same. Now applying common sense there is not much about basketball that suggests looking visibly bigger and stronger helps you improve all else being equal. Basketball strength and weight room strength are not the same. I have the latter and lack the former.
That said… Roy Hibbert actually lost 15lbs since he entered the NBA according this and that. He was 275lbs in college now he’s 260lbs.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:23 PM
Also, comparing Sullinger to Webber is ridiculous. Webber was a bad, bad dude. Sullinger will be in the league a long time, but it would be shocking if he had a carrer like CWebb.People dont realize how good Webber was. That’s partly his own fault b/c he could play so passively at times and had a tendency to shrink in the moment. But when he was on his game, holy crap.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:24 PM
Alright, Davis has been great this year. But who do we think we’s going to be in the NBA? Am I the only one who doesn’t see him as a sure-fire star?
March 1st, 2012 at 4:25 PM
ooo…lamb and irving would be nice.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:25 PM
So in summary: NBA changes the rules so only 6 teams in the east make the playoffs. Greatest mock drafter ever!
March 1st, 2012 at 4:26 PM
no foreigners? kind of incomplete mock draft then.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:27 PM
Does that Jan Veseley character play for the Wizards or is he overseas?
March 1st, 2012 at 4:27 PM
I think his floor is Marcus Camby. Which is pretty damn good. And I see Sullinger as a more skilled but less athletic Corliss Williamson.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:27 PM
no foreigners? kind of incomplete mock draft then..
It already took him nearly half a day to do the almost no research he did for this. Now you want him to take a trip up Fran Fraschilla’s behind?
March 1st, 2012 at 4:29 PM
EHLOOOOO
March 1st, 2012 at 4:29 PM
It would be hard for Jordan to fuck this up, right? If he had the #1 he doesn’t pick anybody else but Davis, right?
the way the NBA lottery works, the absolute worst team has a 1 in 4 chance of getting the #1 pick. So that’s no lock, at all.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:29 PM
Seems like he should be a great rebounder and shot blocker who can give you 15-18 a night. Not a superstar, but maybe he can be Marcus Camby 2.0.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:31 PM
I don’t disagree with your underlying point. But Hibbert was on most draft boards at 240. His weight waffled throughout his career at G-Town, and he looked very skinny his rookie year. Zero doubt in my mind that packing some extra weight the last season has been beneficial…for him.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:31 PM
i mean, i assume he was just copying a bunch of other mock drafts (the whole mock draft exercise is insular like that) and figured they’d be in those.
tho it is lose-lose proposition if you think about it. no foreigners, we hate. foreigners, we mock for being a copy cat.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:32 PM
I hate to get into picking any one player cos there are exceptions to every rule. Again in the NBA throwing your weight around usually get you in foul trouble quickly. Also Durant (or Duncan or KG or Brook Lopez) is a pretty complete basketball player. There isn’t a lot he can’t do.
The point here is that player A + 15 lbs isn’t > player A without the added weight.
We also do this with Running backs weight and durability as if carrying extra lbs protects your soft tissues and bones. Its a lazy way of thinking. Durability is about luck and genetics.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:33 PM
LMAO.
no.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:33 PM
I’d be stunned if he wasn’t a multiple All-Star guy…absolute low end for me is Shareef Abdur-Rahim.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:34 PM
I honestly hadn’t thought about Camby before you and Matty_Cam mentioned it. That’s a pretty good comparison. But it’s also not a comparison that would lead me to dispense with the idea that anyone else could be the first pick.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:34 PM
not being critical …i look at tons of mock drafts to learn about the NFL ones. they’re great resources and even better in terms of convenience because other idiots did the research for you.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:44 PM
LMAO.
no.
nobody who comments regularly here believes you.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:47 PM
LMAO.
no.
As if you put so much research into everything else.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:52 PM
Awwww, cute. Another cherry pick of one comment to answer in a bevy of questioning, critiquing, and mocking.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:53 PM
interesting comparison. SAR was such an underrated player but he did not patrol the paint and step outside to defend pick and roll like Davis did. What I’m so impressed with Davis is he just doesn’t make mistakes. Kid is a freshman and he has shown no nerves despite some delicate situations of late for them. Him stepping out to drill the 20 footer against Vandy was so clutch, he caught the ball, perfect footwork to get square and drilled it. I think he’s an absolute stud and will be unreal when he learns some more back to the basket moves.
March 1st, 2012 at 4:54 PM
Where’s Fab Melo?
March 1st, 2012 at 4:56 PM
Some don’t think he’s coming out. I absolutely do. Why return? His big man coach is gone (Bernie Fine). Nothing more to learn .
March 1st, 2012 at 4:59 PM
Not to mention he hates school. Wouldn’t the NBA scouts be drooling over a true 7 footer that is getting better? Seriously asking since I don’t really watch the NBA.
March 1st, 2012 at 5:04 PM
why would the pistons take a player with a similar skill set as monroe? they need a banger to play alongside him. monroe is going to run pick and roll with knight.
and sully = stanley roberts
March 1st, 2012 at 5:05 PM
why would the pistons take a player with a similar skill set as monroe?
hey fuck you, JMac did the research.
March 1st, 2012 at 5:14 PM
How do you not add Dion Waiters to this list? The kid has game flat out, being so young and talented, gets to the hoop whenever he wants, scary speed. Leading the #2 team on the nation.
March 1st, 2012 at 5:17 PM
One team is going to roll the dice on Meyers Leonard and/or Fab Melo in the first round. Both have huge upside, Leonard reminds me of Brook Lopez on some nights and Robin Lopez some nights. Fab Melo should stay in school for another year but he is turning 23 on draft day, he is a great passer to add to his size, decent mid-range J, stays in school and develops a more offensive game – could be a lottery pick next year.
March 1st, 2012 at 5:26 PM
No Myers Leonard? Leonard absolutely cracks the 1st round. You don’t find 7 footers with that type of athleticism/speed slipping out of the 1st round often.
He’s almost certain to bolt knowing that his coach is about to get fired in the next month.
March 1st, 2012 at 6:38 PM
Does that mean that you think Wroten will be able to hog the ball and freeze out LaMarcus Aldridge as effectively as Brandon Roy did?
March 2nd, 2012 at 9:55 AM
I laughed.
