Why Did ESPN Not Cover The NHL Trade Deadline?
The NHL trade deadline was yesterday. Watching ESPN you might not have been aware. The word “coverage” would overstate the treatment the tension received on air. Hockey fans might feel this is symptomatic of ESPN’s greater neglect for the sport. So, why does this happen?
Awful Announcing points out the obvious reason. ESPN has no rights deal with the NHL. There’s no incentive to actively deploy the news operation to promote a competitor’s product. This undoubtedly plays a role, though there is a simpler and less sinister explanation, ratings.
ESPN programming functions like a website. The common thread running through decision-making is attracting as many viewers as possible, to sell advertisements, make money and, ultimately, pay employees. Those ratings are measured in minute increments. Viewing programming through this prism, it’s no surprise the network focuses on flash points (real or manufactured), debates (real or manufactured) or individuals such as Tim Tebow and Jeremy Lin who are, themselves, flash points and debates. There’s a balance for quality (Outside the Lines), but ultimately the ratings must win out.
The WWL does not emphasize the NHL beyond the odd highlight for the same reason blogs and most of the mainstream media do not. The Sportscenter producer has a chart showing repeatedly the ratings spike when Tebow is on the screen and plummet dramatically when the discussion shifts to regular season hockey. Most often the choice will be one more Tebow segment. If NHL speculation shot ratings up, ESPN would cover it on air, regardless of the rights deal.
There are many ESPN employees who love the NHL. There are people who make decisions at ESPN who love the NHL. ESPN, however, remains a business and it is counterintuitive to cover the NHL extensively on television. It doesn’t rate well and, shut out until at least 2021, they won’t make the same concessions they make for soccer to help it rate well. This lack of ESPN exposure hurts the NHL, but that’s a sacrifice the league made when it left Bristol for more money.

Why Did
ESPNTheBigLead/BigLeadSports of FSV by USA Today of Anaheim Not Cover The NHL Trade Deadline?February 28th, 2012 at 2:05 PM
LeBron not taking a last second shot in an exhibition game is far more important.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:05 PM
I don’t follow hockey…but all I have seen around here lately is the lack of coverage about the NHL trade deadline on this site.

February 28th, 2012 at 2:07 PM
I don’t expect ESPN to cover the MLL and WUSA trade deadlines, why would they cover the NHL?
February 28th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
Nashville radio that night, in a town with no NBA, and a really good hockey team:
“You know what Kobe passed Michael in All-Star points, and it’s time to start comparing the two of them. I think we should do it tonight.”
/literally

Because no one gives a shit about it.

A very heavily veiled self commentary. It would have been refreshing to see it addressed more outwardly.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
Because Amare Stoudamire writes for this site and he doesn’t play hockey?
February 28th, 2012 at 2:10 PM
Is it unethical for ESPN to brand themselves as purveyors of journalism, while clearly basing what is ‘newsworthy’ based on their bottom line?
February 28th, 2012 at 2:10 PM

//goes to Puck Daddy and Second City Hockey

Doesn’t seem like anyone who writes for this site knows enough about the NHL to troll hockey fans.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:11 PM
Why did ESPN not cover the Major League Lacrosse draft?
Why did ESPN not cover the Arena League free agent period?
Why did ESPN not cover the transfer window in the EPL?
February 28th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
Quiet deadline for the most part as well. But for a hockey fan, is this a huge issue really? Plenty of outlets with ample coverage.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
So…everyone in media besides the New Yorker?
February 28th, 2012 at 2:13 PM
I guess I just don’t view them as a company that brands themselves as purveyors of journalism. While I’m sure their writers disagree, I view ESPN as an entertainment channel which cares only for ratings as they affect the bottom line.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:14 PM
St. Nick and Quincey are out for tonight. Smith and Janik are in! Joey Mac’s starting.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:14 PM
I only watch ESPN when on road, they did 2 minutes on a drag racing final with highlights and then showed one hockey highlight for about 10 seconds.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:15 PM
Okay… what about the Chicago Tribune?
February 28th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
I’m actually just kind of surprised that there are still people who watch ESPN for anything other than games. So many better (and faster) outlets to get sports news.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
So going to ESPN as a source of news/journalism is like watching the Daily Show for national news and then complaining that it’s biased.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
I think most hockey fans are over ESPN not giving a shit about hockey.
I don’t care. As long as the games are on somewhere, I (and probably, most hockey fans) don’t give a shit about ESPN buzz any more than say an EPL fan cares about ESPN buzz.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
A very heavily veiled self commentary. It would have been refreshing to see it addressed more outwardly.
You mean have a discussion on why, after almost 15 years since the NHL began migrating South and West or after the years of support by ESPN or why after a labor strike that was meant to fix the sport’s intrinsic financial issues, the NHL is still closer to MLS in relevancy than it is to the NBA or MLB?
That almost sounds like a job for a major sports website.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
This was the question being asked earlier.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
Hockey fans don’t go to ESPN for their hockey coverage in general. There’s a reason people were watching TSN feeds yesterday.
The only thing worth a damn about ESPN’s hockey “coverage” is John Buccigross. And let’s not pretend like if ESPN had the NHL it would be back to the days of NHL2night. It would still be getting very little attention behind the NBA and NFL.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
The only people who watch it are the ones who like to complain about it.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
Sorry, WWoS, overlooked your self-same snarky comment
February 28th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
I would never watch ESPN for any sports coverage, period. I either watch local sports shows or go to the corresponding sports channel that covers the sport of my interest 24/7. Or I use that newfangled thing called the internet.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
You mean have a discussion on why, after almost 15 years since the NHL began migrating South and West or after the years of support by ESPN or why after a labor strike that was meant to fix the sport’s intrinsic financial issues, the NHL is still closer to MLS in relevancy than it is to the NBA or MLB?
Simple – the majority of people have bad taste
February 28th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
Not sure it’s the same as I don’t think ESPN is as blatantly one-sided as TDS is. You turn on TDS for 10 minutes and you know where Stewart stands, whereas at ESPN, it’s more about what you don’t see (SEC critiques in football, for example).
February 28th, 2012 at 2:20 PM
The last year ESPN had the Champions League rights they did not show any highlights of the Bayern semifinal on SportsCenter. None.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:20 PM
My non live sports viewing of ESPN has dropped by probably 90% or more post college. They still rock out CFB though.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:20 PM
ESPN did cover the NHL Trade Deadline by the way. Just not on television. ESPN 1000 here in Chicago had a 15 minute segment about Johnny Oduya coming from Winnipeg. Katie Strang tweeted about John Scott getting moved to the NYR. John Buccigross offered commentary on Cody Hodgson coming from Vancouver to Buffalo for Zack Kassian. Steve Levy had some thoughts on the Sharks getting Daniel Winnik and TJ Galiardi. Linda Cohn wondered why her hometown Rangers held on to Brandon Dubinsky. Forsberg from ESPN Boston even commented on the Capitals not making any moves.
For a sports media site, you guys sure do ignore mediums that aren’t television when discussing coverage. Google Analytics tell media companies more about their consumers than Nielsen Ratings.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:20 PM

they won’t make the same concessions they make for soccer to help it rate well.
The last year ESPN had the Champions League rights they did not show any highlights of the Bayern semifinal on SportsCenter. None.
That’s because ESPN pushes the big 4 English clubs (Liverpool, Chelsea, Man United, Arsenal) or the 2 Spanish giants (Real Madrid, Barcelona). That’s it.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
I’m sure TSN did just fine with their ratings on trade deadline day.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:23 PM
No. It’s because it was the day that Tiger put out a new ad that got twenty minutes of coverage in the episode.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:23 PM
I couldn’t even get TSN to load on my computer because it had so much traffic.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
the NHL is still closer to MLS in relevancy than it is to the NBA or MLB?
Really? Where you getting your numbers, exactly?
Extrapolation. I hear about MLS on ESPN as I hear about the NHL.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
I bet they were down from last year, actually. Parity in the NHL is pretty prevalent this season. There weren’t nearly as many defined sellers as previous years. The only big name being thrown around yesterday was Rick Nash. Lots of teams still in contention for a playoff spot at this year’s deadline.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:25 PM
I just spit coffee.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:25 PM
anyway, this blog is like sports radio….you call to complain that the hosts aren’t talking about what you think deserves more coverage and the host says, hey you;re on now, talk about it.
here, if commenters want to discuss something, they’ve proven they can turn a kobe post into a lebron post lickety split
/you get my point
February 28th, 2012 at 2:25 PM
Exactly my point.
I mean, I know TSN is gonna have great coverage of the Trade Deadline. Why in the world would I even both checking out ESPN? So I can see Barry Melrose is still rocking his mullet?

February 28th, 2012 at 2:26 PM
rex you’re dinking coffee at 330? late night, big lunch or you just love coffee?
February 28th, 2012 at 2:27 PM
Never heard of them.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:27 PM
Oh, so relevancy is based solely on ESPN coverage.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:28 PM
Nashville won the trade deadline as far as I’m concerned so that also probably has a little bit to do with less coverage. There’s only so many people that care about Nashville Predators hockey. They’re called Red Wings, Blackhawks and Blues fans.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:28 PM
Why would ESPN cover a Canadian league? They don’t cover the CFL, do they? The NHL is a Canadian league with a handful of viable U.S. franchises and a bunch of teams waiting to die. If lack of coverage can get rid of 6-10 teams in the U.S., I’m all for it.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:29 PM
Ya, but just give the hockey guys a vehicle. If a daily hockey post would bring in $5k/year in advertising, offer someone $3k to put it on their resume (like Barry Janoff did with his “work”).
It’s not like it will cannibalize other posts (like “Derrick Rose Hates Fun”)
February 28th, 2012 at 2:29 PM
I hope the Preds/Blues get matched up with the Canucks/Sharks in the 1st round.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
Oh come on. You don’t honestly believe this. All it takes is a competitive team to fill the arena. Just look at the San Jose Sharks. Not exactly a prime hockey market there in the Silicon Valley.

It’s the first one.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:31 PM
Well I brought up the initial point because even when they had the rights they didn’t give it as much attention as things that weren’t even actual sporting events.
I think with things like soccer and hockey, when they have it, they know that they have a niche sport on their hands and those who are already fans are at their mercy and will watch no matter what, and any bonus they get from throwing the sport a coverage bone on top plays is nice.
Also the local market TV rights have changed a LOT since ESPN had hockey last. That’s where the ratings really are (granted Versus’s ratings for the playoffs are just as good and in many cases better than on ESPN).
February 28th, 2012 at 2:31 PM
The NHL is a Canadian league with a handful of viable U.S. franchises and a bunch of teams waiting to die.
2 teams (ottawa and vancouver) are in the top 10 standings for BOTH the East and West combined. That means 18 American teams are better than the Canadian clubs. But please elaborate on this obviously well thought out argument.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:32 PM
I take that back. The Jets are up there as well. So it’s only 17. My bad

February 28th, 2012 at 2:33 PM
We don’t really need one. I’m not sure about the other hockey fans here but I don’t really come here for hockey “coverage.” It was fun last year to help out CoRM and whoever else decided to write about the sport but I really only come here to discuss the game with other commenters that watch it. I go to Second City Hockey for most of the day now when the sport is in season. There are people there that like the same team I do and want to discuss the game. I like that.
I still do appreciate CoRM putting up the occasional hockey post though.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:33 PM

February 28th, 2012 at 2:38 PM
I could give a shit, but I think Duffy is wrong.
The NHL and its players could be whatever ESPN wanted it to be. If they wanted to manufacturer and drive drama and soap operas there is plenty of material in the NHL to do it.
If the NBA had its contract with NBC Universal and the NHL was with Disney their coverage would be just about the mirror image of itself too.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:38 PM
Mostly, I was just trying to be a jerk. However, it is a fact that all 7 Canadian teams are filling their buildings every game while you have 9 of 23 U.S. based teams that range between 70%-86% capacity.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:38 PM
Back in the day TBL had a hockey writer. He was worse than Janoff, Effling, and sponsored posts. Knew absolutely nothing about the sport. Duffy took over once he got the heave-ho and did some stuff during the Wings/Pens finals.

Oh you gots to set them straight. I used to purposefully invite my friends over to my cube when they were on the phone doing this and we would talk loud. If that doesn’t work, get an old cell phone, set the alarm for two minutes ahead, lock it in your drawer, and go to lunch.

Same here… though just about 100% now, since I dont get ESPN.
Though I do think it’s simplistic to suggest ESPN reacts to the market for product, rather than sets it. No way can I be convinced the women’s basketball is more popular than hockey in the USA. Or Mexico. Or Ghana.

February 28th, 2012 at 2:45 PM
Especially the Senators.
They are in the top 8. I would guess that’s enticement enough. What else is there to do in Ottawa?

February 28th, 2012 at 2:46 PM
Canadians are going to go see a team that is pretty safely in the playoffs. Nashville hockey fans are really good*, there’s just not enough of them.
*need to cut the stupid chants down about 10 fold though. It’s like they looked up every chant, and couldn’t decide which to do and tried to combine them into one. After a goal it goes on forever.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:46 PM
As noted, I wasn’t being completely serious. At the same time, pointing out that U.S. based teams have been winning the cup since 1994 or are highly ranked at present isn’t really an argument against my statement. I would suggest taking a look at those team’s rosters and seeing where most of the players are from or where they played their junior hockey.

February 28th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
This is why I added the “culturally” caveat when I agreed with you.
It is also why I never understood US fans booing the Canadian national anthem.
First of all, most of your team’s players are from Canada.
Secondly, the Canadian National anthem is pretty good and it’s best sung while drinking.
Just because a bunch of dumbass Habs fans booed the Star Spangled Banner once doesn’t mean US fans need to get their collective panties in a bunch.
February 28th, 2012 at 2:52 PM

I have a working knowledge of how governmental systems are formed and the different theories of what works and what doesn’t based on hundreds of years of case studies and infrastructure analysis. That’s valuable when the systems collapse.
Granted that’s because I have more than a bachelor level education.

All true. On behalf of Canada, I apologize for Habs fans. Not just their behaviour, but pretty much their entire existence. We need to work on fixing that issue.

This comment was pointless.

You’ve just described the internet in less than 20 words, impressive

They are, without a doubt, the worst collective group of fans on any Canadian franchise.

Those damn Habs fans boo the Banner all the time. I actually like that team but their fans are simply awful for the most part. Most of them are 5 cans short of a six pack.

Vancouver closing the gap a tad what with the whole riot thing and all. Even Habs fans were impressed with that display of senseless destruction.

If you don’t know how a knowledge of history, both cultural and economic, would better inform someone making decisions among that mess, then I don’t know what to tell you vez.

i get what you;re saying. i just think that in such situations, muscle and mechanical knowledge and aggressiveness is immediately more important. diplomacy and nation-building amid chaos? maybe i should have explained my vision of chaos better

Economically, it’s true right now. It wasn’t when the Canadian dollar was suffering.
Economically, each of the Canadian teams pay INTO revenue sharing. Teams like the Leafs, Habs, Canucks, Oilers and Flames are keeping 6-10 teams in the US afloat financially.

Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. The past is there for us to learn from, we can apply its lessons for the future to avoid future calamities.

ESPN is NOT a news gathering organization. It’s an entertainment company and it makes its decisions based around business reasons, not based around journalism reasons…..
