The 2012 NFL Combine, Summed Up in Three Glorious Photos
If someone were to ask a football fan to explain the NFL combine, they might be best served using these three stirring photos of Andrew Luck as a succinct visual tutorial. It really covers it all, and perhaps might bring back some fond memories of taking tedious physical fitness tests back in grammar school.
Remember, that spastic kid who always excelled in the widely hailed broad jump, or found the strength and rhythm to do 75 situps in 30 seconds was often the one who ran the wrong way when taking the hand-off in football. Probably best to take the results of these tests with a grain of salt, along with a generous helping of humor.

The standing long jump photos kill. Like they all doing their best Najeh Davenport impersonation.

Watching the OLinemen run the 40 was very funny — I reccommend it to anyone

The NFL is hyper-technical for the sake of being hyper-technical as if that alone is going to uplift impressions of a game that is basically a bunch of humungous dudes smashing into each other with helmets on. And that alone is why I love what Tebow does to these people with his .04 second longer throwing motion.

Throws incompletions at a high rate?
February 27th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
Maybe that was a bad example.
February 27th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
Did you guys know that RGIII is a pretty fast runner?
February 27th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
the drills should be position centric. o-line running a 40? where’s the WR throwing drill?
February 27th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
Mike Mamula will always be the gold standard of a player who was only good at Combine drills but couldn’t play football worth a shit
I think fans overestimate how much stock teams put into these results, it’s just part of the process
February 27th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
I really hope Luck is a massive bust.
February 27th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
if only for the bad facial hair mole

It’s fun to see the analysts get swept away in the “excitement.”

his face is already busted.

Also I’m going to call this now: the steal WR of this draft is going to be Brian Quick.
February 27th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
when’s the last time there were major changes to the process? i mean they treat this shit like the holy grail, when it’s been shown over and over that combine stars are busty
put on the pads, make specific drills for position. keep some agility drills for the o-line, why does it matter how high a QB jumps? get em in a flight-type simulator, only make it with a pass rush coming at em. they have to make a decision, throw using bio-kinetic sensors

I could dominate the presidential physical fitness tests in grade school… except for that damn sit and reach.

T. Y. Hilton didn’t get invited?
February 27th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
Haven’t noticed SROD around here lately.
Just heard Dontari Poe ran a 4.87 weighing about 350 lbs.
February 27th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
Kendall Wright is going to be the best WR to come out of this draft. Book it.

Clever. I like it.

He also put up 44 reps on the bench. Guy is moving himself into the top 10.
February 27th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
Why did Luck even go to the combine?
Via Bruce Feldman on twitter, some 346 DL fatty from Memphis ran a 4.87 40!
February 27th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
Still get measured, take the Wonderlic and meet with representatives from a bunch of teams…all he didn’t do was throw

Of the Darius Heyward Bey rankngs?
February 27th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
Has anyone else tried the bench rep test that they do at the combine? It’s a lot easier when you’re not six foot six and don’t have freakish arms. I put up 42 reps (granted I was around three and a third at that point). And was still able to blast out knuckle children that night.

Professional sports can be rather surreal sometimes.
February 27th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
When you’re important enough to have your own Pro Day where you can throw to your own receivers there’s not a whole lot of reason to do it at the Combine…it’s guys like Kirk Cousins who need all the chances they can get to impress scouts that can benefit from it
February 27th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
In his case, less may have been more.

I completely agree. But it’s that set of circumstances that makes the whole thing surreal.
February 27th, 2012 at 11:54 AM
Sorry for the Duckworth Htown.
February 27th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
heard an analyst say cousins would be a good pro QB in a few years
February 27th, 2012 at 11:57 AM
What’s the deal w/ Sanu from the Rutgers crowd? Is he one of these Braylon Edwards types that drops easy receptions and catches the hard ones?
If he has sketchy hands then that is a big flag for me. I hate the WR prospect who “has all the tools but sometimes drops balls due to lack of focus” or crap like that.

i believe one of the top three hardest things to do in sports is make the grab over the middle consistently. not sure what the other two are. probably some golf or baseball related thing

Texas is most definitely not in the midwest.

Gotcha. I felt like I might be missing an inside joke or reference from the past.
