Andrew Luck Matches Cam Newton’s Combine From Last Year
Cam Newton wowed us last year with his performance at the combine, showing tremendous athleticism in posting a 4.59 40 yard dash, 35 inch vertical, and 10’6″ broad jump.
Well, Andrew Luck went out this morning and put up a 4.59 40 yard dash time, put up a 36″ vertical, and a 10’4″ broad jump.
If there was any doubt (and I don’t think there was) Andrew Luck just showed why he is a once in a decade type prospect. Long time starter in a pro-style offense, consistent performer, excellent pocket awareness, great leadership skills, and on top of all that, athleticism and size every bit as good as Cam Newton, who took the NFL by storm last season. The early buzz was about Robert Griffin III, and in a typical year, Griffin would have a chance to be first overall, and probably would have been in more than half the seasons of the last decade. Not this year.

Colts fans have to be happy go from one franchise QB to immediately to another one and only had to endure one shit sandwich of a season.

oncetwice in a decade type prospect./assumes your point is that Newton was missing items from this list: “Long time starter in a pro-style offense, consistent performer, excellent pocket awareness, great leadership skills”

Cam Newton was better than people thought. Plenty of people were hating on Cam Newton last year and doubting he could play in this league. While we don’t know about Luck’s future, his prospects seem as good as any prospect to at least be a good starter for a long time.
I would say Peyton Manning, John Elway, and Drew Bledsoe were hyped to a similar degree, Luck maybe moreso than Eli and Carson in the last decade, definitely more than Couch, Alex Smith, Russell, Stafford, Bradford, and Newton.

Luck has had the longest hype of any recent pick I remember. How many #1 overall picks decided to stay in school, and ended up staying at #1 and reinforcing all the hype, rather than dropping (eg Matt Leinart)?
I don’t really remember the hype with Peyton Manning, but was he an obvious #1 overall had he not come back to watch Charles Woodson win a Heisman?

And, of course, Ryan Leaf and Matt Leinart.

Yes. If he could have come out for the ’96 draft he probably would have gone #1. Definitely would have gone #1 in ’97. Did so in’98. Aikman was a similarly valued QB prospect and come out in the most front-loaded draft of all time. Ryan Leaf is in the class below and Matt Leinart is in with the guys who couldn’t hold serve on the hype. The only other one I can really think of for that is David Klingler.

Its not as simple as black and white

The person who would have matched this doesn’t only because he went to the USFL, Herschel Walker.
