Ryan Braun Probably Needs to Tell Everyone Why He Had So Much Synthetic Testosterone in His System
What’s your favorite part of the Ryan Braun story?
1) That the collector of Braun’s drug sample was supposed to take it to FedEx one Saturday morning, but thought the office was closed, so he kept it in his fridge all weekend?
2) That Braun has not yet disputed the fact that “a second test on his urine sample showed exogenous testosterone in his body, meaning it came from an outside source”?
3) That “Braun’s initial T/E ratio was more than 20:1. Sources previously confirmed synthetic testosterone in his system.”
As ESPN noted, “Braun didn’t argue evidence of tampering and didn’t dispute the science, but argued protocol had not been followed.” Which is kind of like getting arrested for something but getting off on a technicality, like the cops not reading you your miranda rights.
That, of course, makes Ryan Braun’s statement all the more laughable:
I have been an open book, willing to share details from every aspect of my life as part of this investigation, because I have nothing to hide. I have passed over 25 drug tests in my career, including at least three in the past year.
Question: Ryan, if you have nothing to hide, what caused your testosterone to spike so high? Why was synthetic testosterone in your system?
What a joke. No wonder MLB is livid. Braun’s meeting the media today and will have an opportunity to clear his name. At this point, nobody outside of Milwaukee believes he was clean.

And many don’t care whether he was clean or not.

Needs more accusatory language without evidence.

The MLB-to-WWE transormation is almost complete.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
Braun winning his appeal only created more questions for me. I feel like I’m missing something here in the rush (by players and some in the media) to declare Braun “clean”.
Will there be a more scrutinized drug test going forward in MLB than Braun?
February 24th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
ATL_Engager, clean up on aisle 9.
Bring your knee pads.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
Yes, I echo that. I’m a Cards fan, and I don’t care if he was clean. HOWEVER, I do care whether the PEDs were helping him perform the last few years because I need to know whether I should draft him….so I’m with TBL on this…come clean Ryan! Was it the herpes meds?
February 24th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
OMG THIS THIS THIS. I think the only people who really care about PEDs are the media.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
You’re quick, I was about to type exactly this.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
I’m sensing this may be TBL’s new cause.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
What a joke. No wonder MLB is livid. Braun’s meeting the media today and will have an opportunity to clear his name. At this point, nobody outside of Milwaukee believes he was clean.
@AaronRodgers12 you really believe he didn’t you PED’s???? #delusional
@toddsutton ya I’d put my salary next year on it. #ponyup #exonerated
Seems as though Rodgers knows something you don’t, as that’s a pretty bold statement to put out in public. So what if, during this press conference, it comes out that the levels were caused by his herp medicine? You going to write a post apologizing to him?
TBL, you are a joke.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
Werner von Bra..
Eva Brau…
Goddammit, are there any Brauns better than Ryan Braun?
February 24th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
It is obvious that this media attention is all a result of Braun being a successful Jewish athlete.
/#linsanity
February 24th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
I assume that all athletes use PEDs, and the ones who test positive are the guys who mistimed a cycle.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
The only reason people do care is he’s so adamant about being clean. Colossal douche.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
This is the most important thing that will be written on this site today…jbriaz, never seen you round here, but a warm welcome and a tip o’ the cap.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:03 PM

February 24th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
Can we go back to saying he failed his drug test because of all the medication he was taking for multiple STDs?
February 24th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
Probably true.

Lloyd Braun
/Hernia’d
February 24th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
WE DERSERVE TO KNOW!!! WE’RE THE MEDIA!!!
He went through the process that his union negotiated with his employer and, under that process, he was found not guilty. The rest is demanding that he divulge more of his privacy than his contract demands. He doesn’t “need” to do shit.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
And many don’t care whether he was clean or not.
This too.
Also, I’m sure young Jason NEVER applauded Jason Giambi when he was in a Yankees uniform.
/sarcasm
February 24th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
so, they don’t have a “B” sample, or even a “C” sample to test as well?
i’m just wondering. I mean, sure, that sample was tainted by incorrect protocol or whatever, but shouldn’t there be another sample around that can also be tested?
February 24th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
What if Ryan Braun was black?
February 24th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
Here you go, TBL.
So, not only is there a solid chance he is completely innocent, we seem to have forgotten the fact that none of this should’ve been public in the first place. Troll on.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
HOWEVER, I do care whether the PEDs were helping him perform the last few years because I need to know whether I should draft him…
he doesn’t have prince hitting behind him this year. That should impact his #’s more than anything.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
Agreed, and as mentioned several times already, no one cares. TBL is just doing what TBL does.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
I think his new nickname should be the “Hebrew Petri Dish”
February 24th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
so, they don’t have a “B” sample, or even a “C” sample to test as well?
i’m just wondering. I mean, sure, that sample was tainted by incorrect protocol or whatever, but shouldn’t there be another sample around that can also be tested?
for what it’s worth, he took another test within a week I believe and it came back clean. MLB threw that one out though.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
totally agree.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
You don’t remember the TCU event from last week, do you?
February 24th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
This.
And if a few more MLBers get busted for steroids, they may pass the WWE entirely on their way to the NFL.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
So if you are clean and you fight this kind of accusation it makes you a douche? Got it.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
Where’s the post on PED abuse in the NFL?
February 24th, 2012 at 12:07 PM
he was using some supplements to help his jew-do training, so its unrelated to baseball.
who cares.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:07 PM
Or, it’s like the cops not following chain of custody in handling the substance they claim is an illegal substance. Which, you know, also makes you not guilty.
I know, I know. Rights … pfft.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:08 PM
i do recall that… but i recall the more stringent testing done by the olympics and other sports has at least a second sample taken at the same time to test irregularities and such.
probably mistaken.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:08 PM
Did he also help out a homeless friend after taking the other test?
Link?
February 24th, 2012 at 12:09 PM
This should have never been leaked in the first place. Not everything should be Woodward & Bernstein’d. The process worked as agreed upon MLB & MLBPA. We need to move on, period.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:09 PM
I know this is an extreme comparison, but when all this came out last night, I thought about OJ Simpson. We all know he did it but the jury said he was innocent. It seems to me that Braun won his appeal on a technicality, not that he was clean. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:09 PM
Badger, do you have an email from TBL asking you to email him back to discuss this in detail?

Wanna know what is sad? Justin Morneau might have to retire if he can’t come back from the concussion symptoms he experiences. Just a year and half ago he was heading for his second MVP award.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:10 PM
lol. almost spit Dr. Pepper on my computer screen.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:11 PM
As ESPN noted, “Braun didn’t argue evidence of tampering and didn’t dispute the science, but argued protocol had not been followed.” Which is kind of like getting arrested for something but getting off on a technicality, like the cops not reading you your miranda rights.
OK, let’s stop for a second. This isn’t just a “technicality.” The whole point of a chain of custody is to have a mechanism to prove that the sample collected and tested was obtained from the source (Braun) that everyone says it was collected from. The chain was broken by the guy who kept the samples when he shouldn’t have. By definition, the sample is no longer valid — therefore the result is no longer valid.
In simple English, this positive sample can’t be proven to be Braun’s because the dumbass in question kept it.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:11 PM
A-Rod agrees with this.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:11 PM
They’ve said Braun was the first to have his case overturned, but would we even know if some other player whose case wasn’t leaked won appeal?
February 24th, 2012 at 12:12 PM
It might just be my opinion, but comparing Braun winning the appeal based on the fact of a scientific test being handled incorrectly as opposed to a crime scene with blood, footprints, a bloody glove, motive, past evidence of violence, and the behavior of the acquitted criminal after he had been freed, is about as wrong as wrong gets.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:12 PM
Posted elsewhere, but bears repeating.
His attorneys choose the path of least resistance. They had clear eveidence the collector was in violation of the protocol. To do anything other than challenge on those grounds could have cost them a victory. Now it’s up to Braun to clear his name in the court of public opinion.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:12 PM
that’s the difference between the court of law and the court of public opinion. there’s no technicalities or sometimes even fact in the court of opinion.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:12 PM
MLB has the most strict testing of any of the major sports. They’re the only sport that does blood testing for HGH. The NFL, on the other hand, is completely laughable in their testing practices.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:12 PM
Probably wouldn’t be playing baseball then.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
I don’t think there is an alternative here. People definitely need to get over it.
From twitter, I couldn’t tell if the herpes jokes were a real thing or if it was a meme driven by fans of divisional rivals.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
Due process is not a technicality.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:13 PM

February 24th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
I’m not a criminal lawyer, but I believe that is inadmissible.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:15 PM

He’d be Sammy Davis, Jr.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:15 PM

Yep. Millions of dollars were at stake here. If you were in his position you’d want to make damn sure protocol was followed as was agreed upon.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:15 PM
He’d be a striker for a European soccer team.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:16 PM
Yeah. And you don’t just get off by them not reading your Miranda rights, it’s a much more detailed test than that. Pretty horrific analogy.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:16 PM
Well, I think many people don’t care whether pro athletes use PEDs because they’d like their athletes optimized for premium entertainment. However, I care that he was busted with an absurdly high testosterone rate that shows evidence of PED use and managed to get off of a 50 game suspension that could have completely altered the NL Central division race. It’s bullshit.
The system is what it is right now. He should have been suspended for violating the rules. If you get caught, you should sit for 50 games.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:17 PM
However, I care that he was busted with an absurdly high testosterone rate that shows evidence of PED use and managed to get off of a 50 game suspension that could have completely altered the NL Central division race. It’s bullshit.
who cares if he passed 25 other tests, right? screw his rights.

Easily my favorite so far.

Settle down. With or without Lance Braun prominently involved, the Reds are winning the Central.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:17 PM
February 24th, 2012 at 12:17 PM
Exactly. I love when people say “technicality,” because it’s used virtually exclusively by someone who’s mad at the result. Technicalities exist for a reason.
Then again, maybe Salem WAS full of witches.

February 24th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
I agree. Manny Ramirez does not. His ‘retirement’ was his suspension. Good call, Mr. Selig.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
Your continued dislike of athletes is something else…to hell with collectively bargained appeals processes!
February 24th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
What is synthetic testosterone? It’s actually chemically different and can be detected differently? TBL, care to enlighten us?
February 24th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
Precisely, seeing people get upset with due process is one of my favorite things about my countrymen
Yep. Millions of dollars were at stake here. If you were in his position you’d want to make damn sure protocol was followed as was agreed upon.
Does that exonerate him in public opinion/media opinion? Probably not. Do I think he’s clean? No. Do I care? Nope.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:20 PM
Manny Ramirez is sitting out the first 50 games…

February 24th, 2012 at 12:21 PM
This, to the nth degree. This should have it’s own post. There is certainly some legalese to this argument, and you can probably spin it in both directions, but it is rather important when discussing urine samples that sat around all weekend….
/facts are stubborn things
February 24th, 2012 at 12:22 PM

If he’s a Cubs player, still care? Or are you dancing in the streets for this decision?
February 24th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
MLB with PEDs is like the NFL with concussions, born-again and coming down with the wrath of the almighty.
Seriously, the only reason MLB was able to come back after the strike was PEDs. IF not for Mcgwire and Sosa, MLB could be behind the NHL.
Remember when the NFL’s own expert kept saying that concussions don’t have long term effects on the brain and sold tapes and DVDs of huge hit?
both leagues at minimum tacitly endorsed the behavior they now find abhorrent.

BFF, I realize you weren’t siding with TBL, but this illustrates a point. His successful appeal may very well not exonerate him in public opinion/media opinion. And, as much as I disagree with that, it’s the media’s/public’s right to their opinion.
The problem is that when you have media/public people like TBL saying Braun “needs” to divulge everything possible to the public. That’s bullshit. Braun only “needs” to do what he’s contractually obligated to do. He has done that, and he won. In my opinion, Braun “needs” to throw up two big middle fingers to anyone who says he “needs” to do more.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
Supposedly it’s done by carbon isotope ratios? Fuck that. I’m sure TBL doesn’t care about the specifics and just wants outrage/page views, but if I’m going to condemn a guy for a failed test, I’d like to know what the test is and how fallable it is.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
I bet he mistook it for Red Bull over the weekend and drank some of it. Poor bastard.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
Wasn’t this his second time testing positive though? Wasn’t his suspension supposed to be 100 games?
February 24th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
Keep in mind Braun was hurt in 2010.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:24 PM
This is an excellent point. Perhaps his best line of the defense was the chain of evidence route. But that might not be telling the whole story. I dont see the big problem with not jumping to hysterical conclusions when we obviously dont have the whole story.

February 24th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
84.5, Nick. Went one number up too far on the number part of my keyboard. They valued Braun at 3 extra wins over 50 games. Their win total was 81.5 prior to the overturned suspension. It’s now 84.5.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
BFF, I realize you weren’t siding with TBL, but this illustrates a point. His successful appeal may very well not exonerate him in public opinion/media opinion. And, as much as I disagree with that, it’s the media’s/public’s right to their opinion.

Well, I wouldn’t go as far. He’s still a professional athlete and still reliant on the public’s good graces to make his wealth and fame. So he can’t take that tactic and hope to move past this situation. I do agree with TBL that some measure of honesty has to come from Braun in order to put the issue to bed. Being confrontational doesn’t work for every situation.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
Gotcha. I didn’t even see what you had mentioned before… so it looks like two random numbers that make no sense without context.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:33 PM
He didn’t think FedEx was open on Saturday…which then makes you wonder if this guy even knew the rule that samples are supposed to be sent off in 24 hours and if he did why wouldn’t you question taking them on a weekend
February 24th, 2012 at 12:33 PM
Sorry, cleet. Wasn’t really trying to compare a murderer to someone who may or may not have used PED’s. Guess my point was if you’re guilty in the court of opinion, that makes you guilty regardless these days.

BA by year .324, .285, .320, .304, .332
OBP by year .370, .335, .386, .365,.397
SLG by year .634, .553, .551, .501, .597

So they went from .500 to slightly above .500? That should be good to move them from 2nd place to 2nd place.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:34 PM
Can you take advantage of that? Did people buy in at above 81.5 counting the suspension, and now have a free 3 games? That’s probably why MLB is so pissed.

Yes, I still care. Yes, I’m dancing in the streets.
Yeah, I’m sure he was dancing in the streets when Sosa’s corked bat shattered all over the infield at Wrigley.

He was supposed to look up random numbers in google and it would pop back to him that they were win totals? Youre really bringing the dumb today.

Unless Braun hits like 40 Hr in 50 games, has a .600 Ba with a .700 OBP, and saves 30 runs in the field.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:37 PM
I read that he admitted he had actually done this for other urine tests before. Bet some players are pissed..

3 wins seems high, too.
I’d say 1.5 or 2 max.

Yep. Completely understandable. It was just the bat he was only supposed to use for batting practice. Classic mix up.

This is just another reason why PED use should not be be considered in HOF voting. The media is simply ignorant: Half-knowledge, partial facts, hearsay, conjecture, etc., do not a add up to any semblance of the truth in the final analysis.
Going forward: test as rigorously as possible and base HOF votes on performance with respect to peers/era.

Ah. The “I’ll just turn this around on your team, perhaps an incident from 9 years ago so as to deflect attention away from the guy who got busted on my team” defense.
Two wrongs make a right. Good to see you don’t have too much saddle fatigue from atop that moral high horse you stride around here on.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:42 PM
This is a lot more comparable to OJ than most of you seem to think. The jurors said they ignored the DNA evidence because the samples hadn’t been handled properly (possibly left to sit in the sun, chain of custody issues). But sitting in the sun didn’t turn someone else’s DNA into OJ’s. Just like a jar of piss sitting in a fridge for 2 days doesn’t turn it into synthetic testosterone. If the claim is that the sample was sabotaged, or that his medication caused a false positive, I want to hear that. Otherwise, there’s no vindication here.

Apparently there was a lot of doubt in the jury because DNA tech was so new. It wasn’t understood by the lay person or the media how to interpret the results, or really what the positive test meant.
Sound familiar?

Pussy Salad, Cumfetti, and Clint Webb.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:48 PM
no, but it does open the door for contamination or tampering if the chain of custody is not met.
don’t believe it if you want, but if you want to say chain of custody is a technicality and shouldn’t impact the public perception, then you’d be ok with taking a drug test for work, only to have it come back positive for drugs you don’t take and having no recourse to fight it.

Again, what is this referring to? Should I google it?
Love to see your reaction if you were drug tested for your job, the guy took your sample to his apartment for the weekend, it came back positive, and you had to forfeit 1/3 of your yearly salary because of it.
MLB has never confirmed he tested abnormally high for anything. It was all leaked information. I’ll keep looking though.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:50 PM
Are the drug tests sophisticated enough to ascertain exactly which synthetic testosterone was in the system? A 20:1 ratio seems extraordinarily high. Couldn’t one use the half life to find out if it could possibly have disappeared from his system for the test a week later?
February 24th, 2012 at 12:50 PM
So we finally all agree that Kevin Duckworth is not in favor of a college football playoff?
February 24th, 2012 at 12:50 PM
i’m just wondering. I mean, sure, that sample was tainted by incorrect protocol or whatever, but shouldn’t there be another sample around that can also be tested?
for what it’s worth, he took another test within a week I believe and it came back clean. MLB threw that one out though.
**If you are using a fast-acting testosterone cream, that cream would be out of your system unless caught within a few hours of application. I believe this is what MLB thought they found. The fact that a test a few hours later would not indicate the drug is irrelavent, they are made to process and disapear ASAP. It’s why the test for these would be time sensitive. Guys use righr after a game then the next day they show up and can test clean. Even if they get a wake-up call from a urine sample spook.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:50 PM
A 20:1 ratio seems extraordinarily high.
It’s something like 6X higher than any other test they ever administered. Nope, nothing suspicious about that at all.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:52 PM
I believe synthetic testosterone is chemically identical, and only differs by ratio of carbon isotopes. At least that was my interpretation quickly reading the links. That’s the problem when the media ignorant of the meanings of the tests (including but by no means exclusive to TBL) are preaching on the situation and we all are told opinions rather than facts by which we can generate our own opinions.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:52 PM

Braun argued the process was flawed. Not once, in his court admissible statements, did he deny the testosterone level was high in the sample. Not. Once. He lawyers took the shortest path to acquittal.
His primary objective was to get the 50 game suspension overturned. He accomplished that. What he didn’t accomplish, is arguing that his sample was not tainted. There was no argument made in regards to that at all. The only thing his lawyers argued, so as to not make this about the actual sample, was the due process.
Now, he’ll give a press conference where he does the exact same thing. He’s successfully proven that they screwed up the process. He hasn’t proven, at all, that the piss wasn’t hot.

Anyway.. that T/E ratio is product/precursor ratio, I believe. It can be related to but is not necessarily evidence of exogenous testosterone.

By virtue of the sample spending those 2 days next to the Mayo and Hawaiian Punch, the chain of custody was broken. This is key specially if it’s a time-sensitive sample. It’s worthless at that point.
Exoneration is a tricky thing because it’s all about what you believe and know. Everyone thinks they can be smart enough to figure it out but the fact is that this is why all these procedures are so detailed and controlled — to remove the element of human bias.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:58 PM
I don’t think a topical creme could result in a 20:1 ratio.
I used to frequent the discussion boards at elitefitness. com (a roid site) and I remember that test cyp, test enanthate and test prop (three main testosterones if memory serves) all stay in your system for a considerable period of time.

I agreee SCity, he has some merit to his guilty test but he was likely also busted for going buts w/ a fast-acting creme or oil. I think MLB knows exactly what to look for now. It’s really a cat and mouse game just trying to test at the right time while this is in a guys system still. Or to have the science of the isotopes stand up to prove the drugs were there.

At the end of the day you have to believe either Braun is lying or that someone A.) deliberately injected his sample or B.) his samples were mixed-up, contaminated, or swapped through incompetence. I have a hard time believing the second set of options.
